- Bobby Rydell was born Robert Ridarelli in Philadelphia. It was his father who encouraged him to pursue a career in show business. At the age of four, Rydell would sit in front of the TV and impersonate such performers as Milton Berle, Louis Prima and Johnny Ray. He also admired drummer Gene Krupa and began playing the drums at the age of six. At the age of seven and with his father's encouragement, Rydell began performing in nightclubs in Philadelphia.
In 1950, Bobby Rydell entered the amateur show of Paul Whiteman; his first-place win gained him a regular part on the show. He stayed with the Whiteman show for three years and then went to join several local bands in Philadelphia. It was here too that Bobby Ridarelli became the easier-to-pronounce Bobby Rydell. At 16 he began playing with local groups, landing a spot as a drummer for Rocco and the Saints. (Frankie Avalon, another Philadelphia-born musician, played trumpet for the group.) While with the band, Rydell signed a recording contract with Cameo/Parkway Records in Philadelphia. His hit "Kissin' Time," recorded in the summer of 1959, launched his musical career and made him a teen idol at the age of 17.
After making his first hit recording, he pursued a solo career, performing at the Copacabana in New York in 1961, where he was an instant hit. Rydell made his acting debut in 1962 on the television show Combat! One year later, he starred as Hugh Peabody in the famous musical Bye Bye Birdie. It was only after his acting debut that he fervently began playing the nightclub circuit.
With records like We Got Love, Wildwood Days and Sway, Rydell made himself a hit. Along with Frankie Avalon and Fabian, Bobby Rydell is known as a Philadelphia-born teen idol, known not only for his musical genius but also his handsome looks. ~ Kim Summers, All Music Guide

RIP and long live Bobby Rydell (April 26, 1942 - April 5, 2022), aged 79
You will always be remembered as a legend.
Oh my goodness! I did not know that he was gone. Thank you for the info. His version of this song kept coming to my mind, so I decided to take the time to look for it so I could listen to it. It sounds - and feels - as fresh & beautiful now, as it did when I heard it in the 60s. Blessings to you.💖
They still play his songs at an Italian market where we shop it really brings you back to the 60s
That's what I love about all my oldies. They always take me back.
I love Italian bakeries especially the lobstah tail section ...there are 2 in Boston’s North End that are extremely famous...
where?
I loved him as a young girl and yes wow - always memories of the 60s whenever I hear him
His songs aren't in Italian???
I was 8yrs old at the time this song came out, I have loved it ever since.
So Long Bobby from one Philly boy to another...Thanks for the music...
Rest In Peace, April 26, 1942 - April 5, 2022
Same age as you. We had great music.
@@mvann5 Yeah we did Brother Man!
As a little kid, I was obsessed with this song. I played it over and over. I guess that I still do lol.
Remember hearing this great song when it came out. it was a big hit, sung in Italian by Domenico Modugno.
Bobby Rydell's version also has lots of energy. Perry Como had his little joke about making Bobby an honorary Italian: Rydell was Italian American, born Robert Ridarelli. He just died today, April 5, 2022; may he rest in peace.
My favorite song by Bobby Rydell. His version was more up-tempo geared toward teenagers, then the versions by Dean Martin and Domenico Modugno. RIP April 5, 2022.
One of the beautiful voices I grew up listening to. Rest in heaven,Bobby. 🥺
RIP sir. Your music and videos will live on for eternity.
Sad to learn Bobby passed away , what a talented man he was. My fave was "volare." An ICON has left the building.
I know Darin is held in highest regard by singers but I really have to give my vote to Rydell for the incredible tone of his voice and his presentation which is also so winning. You kinda knew Darin was "trouble" but Rydell made you feel great.
Didn't know he had passed on. I'm almost 77 and as a teen he was my favorite singer, and this song was great. RIP Bobby, you were a talent.
Back when America was still a decent place to raise your children
I remember hearing this song when I was growing up and I wasn’t born until 1964. 🙂 I have it added to my playlist on my cell phone. 🙂
Hi dear how are you doing over there ?
I was born in 1962 and fell in love with this song at age 13.
Listened to all his hits as a teenager. His voice is muy Bonita. RIP beautiful Bobby. 🕊️
Out of all the singers who sung Volare this version by Bobby Rydell is my favorite with the Orlons as background singers. ❤
RIP Bobby .. I was just a tiny one, but Volare was always a wonderful song .
Man! Those Italian-heritage boys could sure sing and swing. We are fortunate in the US of A to have so many fine bambinos and bambinas of Italian ancestry. Our great melting pot has always been our greatest strength and joy. I cannot agree with anyone who says differently.
Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Fabian, Bobby Darin, Dion, Annette, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Freddy Cannon, Lou Christie, Johnny Rivers, Jack Scott, Connie Francis....
ricky nelson
John1948TwoB1a. you forgot Dino DeMucci, Sonny Bono, 4 Seasons, Paul Anka, a whole lot more as well..
I meant Dion..
Calihartley - You DO realize that back then Italians were not considered "white" the way that they are now don't you? There was prejudice there as well, just as there is now with Muslims. So let's stop pretending shall we.
I love how he swings this! I was 5 year old when it was a big hit. Loved it then, love it now.
I had SO much "a-goodah time" with him at a Delaware library!! Great musician, beautiful man...miss you and God bless you, Mr Rydell
RIP BOBBY!
R.I.P Bobby Rydell
Rip Bobby🎈
Thanks for the Memories~❤
I heard Sway today what a wonderful song. Took me right back to a different moment in time. I can see my parents dancing that day.
Thanks for sharing.
There IS no place like "HOME",...Too bad we havent been "THERE" since we got "HERE"😎😘😎
Underrated talent. One of my favorite Oldie Singers
underrated? how so? he was a big success
RIP Bobby Rydell, r&r singer ("Wild one", "Volare" and "Wildwood days" etc.) and actor (Bye Bye Birdie)(79) ;-( Bobby also toured in 1960 with "the Everly Brothers", Billy "Crash" Craddock, Marv Johnson, "The champs" and "the Crickets!, recording an australian version of "Kissin' time" for the event, as an actor he also played Hugo Peabody in the movie version of "Bye bye birdie" with Ann-Margret and Dick Van Dyke, Bobby also appeared on "The Danny Thomas show", "Jack Benny", "Joey Bishop" and "The George Burns show", he was a regular on "The Milton Berle show" and was a panelist on "To tell the truth" in 1964 etc.
Bobby Rydell died today RIP. Great Singer. Grew up in Philly.
Those backup singers added a lot and they always sounded like they were having a blast.
My favorite version of this song. It makes it 60s American.
Finally got to meet him a few uears ago, "before my time"( Just a few years) loved his music, great man, Awesome person. Go sing with the Stars.Luv ya
Love this guy ! Such a talent ! Way ahead of all the others back then. In 1960, when I was 15, he gave me so much inspiration in my career. PS ....I wound up singing this song on a "Danny Thomas Special" in 1965. Danny Thomas himself picked the song out of my repertoire to do on his show. Thank you Bobby for all the inspiration you gave me. Update: on April 5, 2022 , a day before my Birthday, we lost Bobby. My heart is broken. Thank you for being such an inspiration to me. RIP Pisanne. Ciao for now.
Rest in peace, Bobby! your music was a good part of my childhood, such happy memories . Say hi to Dick Clark on the big Bandstand on the sky.
*in the sky
What I liked about Bobby Rydell songs were the female back up vocalists. This song is still fabulous.
Great memories
David, you took the words right out of my mouth. His backing group of girls were what made his songs so memorable. A shame we never got to see them, or have I just missed the recording they were shown ?
@@derekcoleman9305 From what I understand, one of the reason you never saw them is because one or more of them were grandmothers!! They DID sound just like teenagers though. Especially with songs like "Swingin' School"
R.I.P. Great voice...
Fly High Bobby Rydell R.I.P.
He’s awesome you see how smoothly he moves
Before my time and love every minute of it.
In my book no one can do this song as well as him.
RIP Bobby Rydell .....Godspeed
R.I.P Bobby.. my Dad Artie Singer & Uncle Harold were prominent Vocal Coaches in Philly. Anybody out of Philly took lessons from them.. including Al Martino, James Darren, Frankie Avalon, Chubby Checker, Solomon Burke, etc. I asked him who was the most talented.. he said without hesitation Bobby.. his parents took him into Dad's studio when he was around 8.. he told them he was a natural.. that there wasn't much he could show him.. but to bring him back when his voice changed. (around 13). The rest is history.
Thank you for this.
Wow, I was born in '59 and remember this like it was yesterday. I was so close to the TV trying to touch the experience.
what a mature voice in one so young.
Hi dear how are you doing over there ?
i wasnt born yet I was born in 1962 but love this song
I had so much fun joking with this GOD of music at the Wilmington Delaware library!!
Yet another excellent recommendation Mr. Lynch!
Another nice Italian boy : Roberto Ridarelli ---& could he sing !!! -------Wolfsky9
I love this song and love what's happening in the background. 60 years ago.
R. I. P. Bobby Rydell. Love you.
A great singer and personality. Gone to sing in Rock N' Roll Heaven. RIP, Bobby.
Bobby's backup singers were on most of his big hits and highly under rated
The Ya Ya girls were sooooooo good.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think his backup was Dee Dee Sharp, Willa Ward Moultrie, Vivian Jackson, and Mary Wiley. This is according to an interview with Dee Dee Sharp.
underrated? they were backup singers, they're supposed to be underrated - that's their job
Too right. Those Italianos could sing. But where are they now?? Loved them all. The romance has truly gone out of the tunes now. Sad. So sad. Moi, j'ai souviens les jours toujours romantique.
Bobby Rydall, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Brain Hyland, Jimmy Tillotson, Bobby Vee, Bobby Vinton and other still great and have seen them all within the last 15 yrs. Most singers now go for the pizzazz and not from the heart. I'm a big Steve Perry fan and listening to a singing coach talk about the ways he opens his month, moves his jaw to make the sound come out right. He said he is one of the best singers (for you who are not fans yes he's still around and put out a new album in the beginning of this year called Traces) the sings 50s and 60s cared about the quality and sound of their voice.
I remember my Grandpa humming this tune in the 60s. I never knew of this singer, but recognized the song.
lots of different singers recorded this tune
So mature and smooooth at age 18!! I always thought he had one of the best voices of his peers. Loved him in Bye, Bye Birdie!
Arrivederci, Mr. Rydell. You were one of a kind.
The backup singers are perfection omg
Blows me away, so much talent in one person! Would have liked to have known him personally, seems like he would have made a great buddy. No one did Volare better!
RIP Bobby Rydell 🙏🏻
RIP Bobby
This song is about to turn 59 tomorrow. Still love it.
Rest in peace Bobby, you will be missed
I was 6 when I first heard this amazing song blasting out of all the speakers at the Blueline drive-in in Adelaide in 1960. Bobby's great voice, the beautiful rhythm, and spectacular backup vocals... I fell in love with music that night. Gordon Campbell.
I love how sharp they dressed. Very crisp and respectable
Rest In Peace, Bobby.
Bobby Rydell and Frank Sinatra taught me how to sing by imitation and endless practice. It got me lots of parts in High School musicals. I’m still grateful for all the best musical times. Rest In Peace and joy Bobby.
Bobby is the Man! RIP!
Wonderful times. 50s’ 60s’ The renaissance of music. GodBless him.
Love love love this song!. Love him. Had a major crush on him. Cant believe he is gone. All the good ones pass. Love u bob. The greatest entertainer ever. So much energy. Great voice. And GOEGEOUS. !RIP BOB. GOD BLESS. .🥰💯👏👏😞
So fun to have met, talked, chatted about "Bye bye Birdie" , and just had fun with him
I like the way Rydell performed this
Bobby had one of those good Italian singing voices, even being so young.
RIP,one of the best of his era.........I stand corrected any era.
:)...He was so young in this...RIP legend!...Native son does well...
Rest In Peace, Bobby….
Thank you for everything.
Met him, miss him, God bless him
From Philly to you Bobby...RIP
I was 5 when this song came out. I remember hearing it on the radio
Met him..love him..God bless him
"Thank you, BOBBY RYDELL for doing your part to help tame mankind with your music, gift and talent. May GOD bless your legacy and surviving family."
Volare (whoa-oh, whoa)
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
(Whoa-oh, whoa-oh)
Cantare (yeah, yeah, whoa)
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Let's fly way up to the clouds
Away from the madd'ning crowds
We can sing in the glow of a star that I know of
Where lovers enjoy peace of mind
Let us leave the confusion and all disillusion behind
Just like birds of a feather
A rainbow together we'll find
Volare, whoa, oh, oh, oh
Cantare, whoa, oh, oh, oh
No wonder my happy heart sings (yeah, yeah)
Your love has given me wings
(Volare) yeah, yeah, yeah
No wonder my happy heart sings
Your love has given me wings

Thanks
RIIP I fondly remember your music
OMG... How I WISH I was born back then we're talent MEANT TALENT
But then you would be old now. I know what you mean though, there was so much talent, but style, music, and the music industry have changed so much. It's a shame that my kids, grand kids, or any of the younger generations can't experience those times, it was a very different place with different attitudes and a very strong sense of a better tomorrow for us and our children. Unfortunately we have left this generation and the ones that follow a very big mess. I truly hope they can find the solutions.
On this day in 2012 {July 18th} Bobby Rydell was released from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia one week after undergoing a 20-hour kidney and liver transplant operation...
Exactly fifty-two years earlier on July 18th, 1960 his covered version of "Volare" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #60; seven weeks later on September 5th it would peak at #4 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the Top 100 for 15 weeks...
It reached #9 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...
Between 1959 and 1965 he had twenty-eight Top 100 records; six made the Top 10 with his biggest hit being "Wild One", it peaked at #2* for 1 week in 1960...
He just missed having eight Top 10 records when both "Kissin' Time" in 1960 and "Good Time Baby" in 1961 peaked at #11...
Mr. Rydell, born Robert Louis Ridarelli, celebrated his 73rd birthday three months ago on April 26th {2015}...
* The week that "Wild One" was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "The Theme from A Summer Place" by Percy Faith and His Orchestra...
My favorite BR song. Continue your rest.
My favorite version of Volare next to Dean Martins who sang Italian in parts of the song. My favorite song by Bobby Rydell is Forget Him. RIP Bobby Rydell 😥🥀🎶🎤
Met him, loved him, awesome
We will miss u Bobby 🌹🌹🌹🌹
Never saw this before......Gotta love Him!!!!
Très belle voix joli style j aime beaucoup ❤❤❤
Rip Bobby 🙏 💔😥
I was about to turn 10 when Bobby made this appearance! I was a huge fan. I still am! RIP, Bobby!
when i was about 5 0r 6 i used to dance with my mom in the kitchen to this song
Hello dear how are you doing over ?
Sadly, Bobby is gone now. It's all over the news today (6 April 2022). He was among the best of the 1959-1964 era, and beyond.
One thing that was great about Bobby is unlike the others He Never left The Phila area!
Always loved this song. RIP Bobby Rydell💔🙏🏻
Perry Como was such a mellow and talented man. So are Bobby Ridarelli and Dion DiMucci. I wish I knew how to say "totally awesome" in Italian!
great singer, great song, god bless
Today, April 26, 2017, Bobby Rydell is celebrating his 75th birthday (Born April 26, 1942). This 1960, Bobby Rydell's cover of the 1958 song (Volare) "Nel blu dipinto di blu" reached #4 on Billboard Hot 100 list
Always enjoy his songs great voice.Rip Bobby.
He still sounds amazing
REST IN PEACE ....but with music...
He is a very good singer. I remember the song , forget him, from the sixties. I think he may have had slightly bad timing with the music changing in 1963. The upload is great and shows his massive talent at its best.
Phillys homeboy.. RIP 😢
