I would've thought Melody Pianissima may have died of depression or loneliness because she does spend a lot of time waiting for someone to share her love of music with. Her whole room is dedicated to this; she has many instruments to play yet she is always waiting for another person to play them with. Basically some kind of suicidal episode due to severe depression due to lack of a musician partner. When you play music to her she perks up and becomes obsessively interested in your musical abilities and quizzes you about music too, meaning she may think you a kindred spirit so to speak.
Van gore could have actually died from his paint. A lot of paint in the past was full of lead, arcinic,uranium, and mercury. A lot of people have died in the past from breathing in the fumes from paint unintentionally.

Probably spot on with some of them, but REALLY out there with others(especially the music ones). Here are my theories, a bit more grounded and far less evidence, but still possible. Let me know what you think. I'm only going over the first game. Game 1 Neville: Early 40's at time of death, so maybe an illness of some kind, possibly cancer, died whilst reading or sleeping in his chair. Lydia: Mid 30's. Her biography implies she knew she was dying, so likely a similar death to Neville, but died when there was strong winds. Chauncey: Stated to be born a ghost, so he was most likely stillborn. Floating Whirlwindas: Both in their 30's. Biography states they were waltz champions, so probably a competition that took a nasty turn. Either an accident or sabotage from a jealous competitor. Shivers: Early 70's. Fear of fire suggests he died in a fire. Melody: Mid 20's. Given how young she is, as well as her short temper, it's likely she got a bad reaction from a fan who promptly killed her. Either that or another fatal illness was involved. Mr. Luggs: Age 30. Ate until his stomach burst, similar to the first victim in the movie Seven, except he did it to himself. Spooky: Age 4. Either abandoned or some sort of natural cause. Bogmire: N/A Biff Atlas: Mid 20's. Either from a gym accident with the weights, or an overdose of steroids. Nana: Mid 70's. Definitely old age. Miss Petunia: Age unknown. Said to be a runner-up from a beauty competition six years prior, though it was for the title of "Miss Ghost", so she was probably already dead at that time. I'd wager she was a former beauty pageant contestant with low self esteem issues, and didn't take loses very well. My verdict, she suffered from depression after too many loses, drowning her sorrows in the shower, before taking her own life in the bathroom. Slim Bankshot: late 20's. Even though he's never played against living souls, he's known as a champion among competitive pool players. Chances are he played against ghosts of former champions, and one in particular was a sore loser and killed him. Henry & Orville: Both 5. Given their very young age, and the strong likelihood they died at around the same time, they probably died from their own mischievous fun. Difficult to say how they perished from their own antics, but my guess is that it was something similar to Casper in the movie where they were playing outside, then bad weather caused them to get sick, and their parents' illnesses prevented all of them from getting better. Or perhaps whatever afflicted their parents also got passed to them. Madame Clairvoya: Early 50's. I'm in agreement with her death being at the hands of King Boo. Only alternative I can think of is perhaps she spoke with a very aggressive spirit who possessed her and made unwillingly take her own life. Uncle Grimmly: Mid 40's. Also agree with your assessment. Clockwork Soldiers: Probably some sort of magic where they became ghost-like despite not having been alive before. Sue Pea: Age 7. Given she passed in her sleep, she likely also had a terminal illness. Assuming she's related to Neville and Lydia, the illness probably ran in the family but was more aggressive on the kids. Jarvis: Age unknown. According to the wiki's trivia, Jarvis might be an octopus. If this is to be taken as fact, then suffocation would be his cause of death. Otherwise, I got nothing. Sir Weston: Age 30. Froze to death. Vincent Van Gore: Late 50s. Probably the same way as his real life inspiration.
Alternatively, if Lydia already knew she was dying it could be connected to Chauncey being a stillborn. Maternal sepsis is a thing, and could have actively been killing her while dealing with the trauma of the experience.
Petunia died of pneumonia. There’s text in the game about how one of the other ghosts would mess with the shower and she got sick from it. They had hoped that their prank didn’t get her sick, but it did, because that’s the trick you have to do to beat her, she doesn’t like the cold water, and wants the hot water.
In beta footage of Luigi's Mansion 2, it shows that in the Old Clockworks a worker's uniform was stuck in some gears, so maybe that's how the Overset Possessor died.

My theory with Madame Clairvoya is as follows: she's actually from the era of Gypsies and witch hunts, and had found eternal rest in her passing. King Boo raised her from the dead, and now she's trapped in eternal unrest. When E. Gadd came along and put her in a painting, for her she realized that's the closest she can get to eternal rest again (only this time, it's like a lifetime at the spa). When she saw the poltergust, that's when she vowed to help Luigi locate his brother via his clothing; as supposedly, items that hold close attachment to a person can be used to track someone spiritually
I think Serpci died the same way Cleopatra did. For those who don’t know the history of Cleopatra, she committed suicide by getting bit by a venomous snake. Some say she also poisoned herself. I think that’s worth mentioning.
For all the pianists, they might have died due to self-neglect. Them trying to create that "perfect" piece instead of taking care of themselves cause their bodies to fail on them. Now that they don't have a physical body anymore to "weigh them down," they can really try to perfect their art.
I’d like to posit that Van Gore could have died from painting, just not the way you may expect. Judging from the overall aesthetics of the mansion, it’s quite inspired by a lot of Victorian/Edwardian/Gregorian stuff, which is quite old-fashioned by our modern standards. In those time periods, the common ingredients from most paints was EXTREMELY toxic- from lead to mercury to arsenic, a lot of old paint recipes had deadly effects to many, mostly in old homes painted a specific shade of green that would drive people mad from the fumes and chemical exposure. Van Gore’s studio is pretty isolated and shut tight, most likely with terrible ventilation. He may have died at a certain point after exposure to these deadly pigments

So about the Boos. Back in the day, Nintendo Power had graphic novel running in it that was loosely based on Super Mario World. I bring this up because in a ghost house, Dr. Mario has a therapy session with the Boos, and it's revealed that the reason they freeze up whenever someone looks directly at them is lingering trauma from bullying/abuse back when they were alive. Now, I don't think that behavior actually applies to any of the Boos in the Luigi Mansion games, but it does kind of confirm they were alive at one point.

Clem: You forgot to mention that he possibly drowned, or he got impaled by the spikes on his bossfight. An old ghost hating candles makes sense. Back when candles were a popular light source, massive fires and fire related deaths were VERY common. Peoples clothing was flammable, and one wrong move was all it took to go up in flames.
I really like your personal take on their backstories. Ghosts in folklore and media are always described as recreating the cause of their death and are literally bound to the place of their death in the afterlife. The only reason why the ghosts are together in the mansion/hotel is because King Boo braught them there, so probably the haunted buildings were shaped around their memories.

Van Gore is actually described in the game as the "starving artist" and it also says that "he couldn't sell any of his paitings in his 30 years working with it", so it pretty much says that he was a frustated artist that died of starvation 'cause he didn't had any money to buy food. It still adds up with Van Gogh's death but I don't think Nintendo would make the game this dark... Right?

In Luigi's Mansion 1, it always felt strange that a whole dead family is present. All of their ages still align, in the sense that mom, dad and children's ages are consistent with their roles in the family. It kind of implies they all died shortly after one another, which point to murder. So maybe King Boo caused a lot of freak accidents? Another thought was a home invasion or family member that snapped, which ended terribly.
Vincent Van Gore was in the paint room for the entirety of Luigi's mansion and probably created every ghost in the mansion. And I think when he was alive, he was wasting away in his paint room for so long, that breathing in all the paint chemicals eventually killed him. Who knows, maybe he was into huffing. And as for Henry and Orville, I would think they probably were playing hide and seek and got stuck, either suffocating to death or dying from dehydration since no one ever found them.
Uncle Grimmy's cause of death that combines the heart and power outage ideas together: he had a heart attack and was put on life support but a power outage caused by a storm made it to where it couldn't do anything for a long period of time and he passed during that

I think for that one ghost in the second game that played piano probably died from the piano lid slamming shut onto his head, but that didn't kill him instantly and instead opened the door for a brain hemorrhage given how big and bulbous it is, possibly due to swelling. Like, he was playing, something inside the piano broke, he got tools, opened the lid and propped it up and then got to work, only for the stand keeping the lid up to get knocked out of the way(whether by him hitting it or the lid being lifted more and the stand falling out of place meaning it didn't have the support to stay up on its own anymore), which lead to a situation where it slammed down onto his head, possibly knocking him out if it didn't kill him outright. Maybe the piano didn't have a proper stand and he used some books as a stand-in. But they got knocked out the same way and he got piano lid.

But there is one quote from Dr. Gadd that cracks this whole theory wide open: "I've been living here since I was a lad of twenty or so, and I'll tell you: That mansion appeared just a few days ago! The spirits have fooled you!" This mansion, and all subsequent ones, are creations of the Boos to trap Luigi and his brother, Mario, once and for all! The answer is literally in the game, my guy.
So what? The video is about how the ghosts died. They were all real ghosts captured by E. Gadd over his years as a ghost hunter. King Boo freed them from the paintings and gathered them together in the ghost house the Boos created, but obviously they were real people with real deaths. The game even confirms it when it confirms some of their deaths (like the fat ghost dying of overeating, or the girl that died in her sleep.)
I thought that since the stairs that the Harsh Ghost was possessing were on fire, maybe they were trying to escape a house fire and fell down the stairs. Which would either break their neck, spine, or any bones. That would lead to a quick and painless death or a slow and painful one as they burned alive, unable to escape.
good theory's the one hint for the first game is that the murky ghost or the clover key boss is the builder of the mansion, and after he died 2 years after making it a curse was put on it that who ever lives in the mansion will die within two years.

I wonder-Spooky the dog doesn't have any back legs. Granted, all the human ghosts have ghostly tails in place of their legs, but they all seem to be able to mostly walk/float around as easily as if they still had legs. Meanwhile, Spooky seems to drag himself around as if his legs were actually missing. Perhaps he got hit by a car, and sheared in half?

Fun video.. old fan of the Luigi’s manshion but I’m honestly surprised, i always remember the first game having more clear details on those ghosts. The frame ghosts were all actually family in the manner but I was under the impression that bowser just asked king bo to bring in the lesser ghosts to scare Luigi. As for the deaths in game 1, I was personally a fan of the “connected deaths” theory explaining it. the short version; Uncle grimly, whose death and job explains away a lot of the others, died before power could be restored to house. The outage then directly killed some residents, while others were a little bit later. The lights went out and the weight lifter, pool player, and dancers may have been the first to die following the outage not being able to see what they were doing. the aunt more likely slipped and hit her head before drowning. the mother more likely fell out the window when she couldn’t see where she was going. The butler who would’ve been patrolling when this happened, maybe walked in on the bodies and was scared of the dark which is why he’s the only one with a light source. Piano player was a child who passed well before the events, supposedly it’s her grave located in the background of the dog’s backyard. That said The dog, baby, and children could all have died from neglect. Mother and father never went to check on the kids because they had already passed. It made more sense that Nintendo wouldn’t actually let people be killed intentionally by a main cast member, even bowser. Alternatively, non of the ghosts lived there and were called on by boo to torment Luigi.. it’s why they don’t care when Luigi walks in and all seem friendly.. they don’t even know that they died

I dont know if anyone said this already, but if you look closely at the shape of the mirrors that the three sisters carry with them, they got the same shape as the pictures in the family living room of the haunted towers, indicating that they potentially lived there and owned the place before they died. Given by the many gardening rooms and the lab in the basement, their father could have been a scientist doing experiments on the plants (as we see the mutated venus flytraps and those orange flowers trapped inside of glass down in the basement where the laboratory is at) Now either, as it was said in the video, the sisters could have just gotten into an accident and those plants could have eaten them alive, or their father just became the usual evil scientist going all crazy and killing his family. Thats just my theory though

Probably spot on with some of them, but REALLY out there with others(especially the music ones). Here are my theories, a bit more grounded and far less evidence, but still possible. Let me know what you think. I'm only going over the first game.
Game 1
Neville: Early 40's at time of death, so maybe an illness of some kind, possibly cancer, died whilst reading or sleeping in his chair.
Lydia: Mid 30's. Her biography implies she knew she was dying, so likely a similar death to Neville, but died when there was strong winds.
Chauncey: Stated to be born a ghost, so he was most likely stillborn.
Floating Whirlwindas: Both in their 30's. Biography states they were waltz champions, so probably a competition that took a nasty turn. Either an accident or sabotage from a jealous competitor.
Shivers: Early 70's. Fear of fire suggests he died in a fire.
Melody: Mid 20's. Given how young she is, as well as her short temper, it's likely she got a bad reaction from a fan who promptly killed her. Either that or another fatal illness was involved.
Mr. Luggs: Age 30. Ate until his stomach burst, similar to the first victim in the movie Seven, except he did it to himself.
Spooky: Age 4. Either abandoned or some sort of natural cause.
Bogmire: N/A
Biff Atlas: Mid 20's. Either from a gym accident with the weights, or an overdose of steroids.
Nana: Mid 70's. Definitely old age.
Miss Petunia: Age unknown. Said to be a runner-up from a beauty competition six years prior, though it was for the title of "Miss Ghost", so she was probably already dead at that time. I'd wager she was a former beauty pageant contestant with low self esteem issues, and didn't take loses very well. My verdict, she suffered from depression after too many loses, drowning her sorrows in the shower, before taking her own life in the bathroom.
Slim Bankshot: late 20's. Even though he's never played against living souls, he's known as a champion among competitive pool players. Chances are he played against ghosts of former champions, and one in particular was a sore loser and killed him.
Henry & Orville: Both 5. Given their very young age, and the strong likelihood they died at around the same time, they probably died from their own mischievous fun. Difficult to say how they perished from their own antics, but my guess is that it was something similar to Casper in the movie where they were playing outside, then bad weather caused them to get sick, and their parents' illnesses prevented all of them from getting better. Or perhaps whatever afflicted their parents also got passed to them.
Madame Clairvoya: Early 50's. I'm in agreement with her death being at the hands of King Boo. Only alternative I can think of is perhaps she spoke with a very aggressive spirit who possessed her and made unwillingly take her own life.
Uncle Grimmly: Mid 40's. Also agree with your assessment.
Clockwork Soldiers: Probably some sort of magic where they became ghost-like despite not having been alive before.
Sue Pea: Age 7. Given she passed in her sleep, she likely also had a terminal illness. Assuming she's related to Neville and Lydia, the illness probably ran in the family but was more aggressive on the kids.
Jarvis: Age unknown. According to the wiki's trivia, Jarvis might be an octopus. If this is to be taken as fact, then suffocation would be his cause of death. Otherwise, I got nothing.
Sir Weston: Age 30. Froze to death.
Vincent Van Gore: Late 50s. Probably the same way as his real life inspiration.

Alternatively, if Lydia already knew she was dying it could be connected to Chauncey being a stillborn. Maternal sepsis is a thing, and could have actively been killing her while dealing with the trauma of the experience.

Petunia died of pneumonia. There’s text in the game about how one of the other ghosts would mess with the shower and she got sick from it. They had hoped that their prank didn’t get her sick, but it did, because that’s the trick you have to do to beat her, she doesn’t like the cold water, and wants the hot water.
In beta footage of Luigi's Mansion 2, it shows that in the Old Clockworks a worker's uniform was stuck in some gears, so maybe that's how the Overset Possessor died.

There are only two ways I can think of someone being born as a ghost: either it was a stillbirth, or ghost intercourse. Two very disturbing thoughts for vastly different reasons.

My theory with Madame Clairvoya is as follows: she's actually from the era of Gypsies and witch hunts, and had found eternal rest in her passing. King Boo raised her from the dead, and now she's trapped in eternal unrest. When E. Gadd came along and put her in a painting, for her she realized that's the closest she can get to eternal rest again (only this time, it's like a lifetime at the spa). When she saw the poltergust, that's when she vowed to help Luigi locate his brother via his clothing; as supposedly, items that hold close attachment to a person can be used to track someone spiritually

For all the pianists, they might have died due to self-neglect. Them trying to create that "perfect" piece instead of taking care of themselves cause their bodies to fail on them. Now that they don't have a physical body anymore to "weigh them down," they can really try to perfect their art.
I’d like to posit that Van Gore could have died from painting, just not the way you may expect. Judging from the overall aesthetics of the mansion, it’s quite inspired by a lot of Victorian/Edwardian/Gregorian stuff, which is quite old-fashioned by our modern standards. In those time periods, the common ingredients from most paints was EXTREMELY toxic- from lead to mercury to arsenic, a lot of old paint recipes had deadly effects to many, mostly in old homes painted a specific shade of green that would drive people mad from the fumes and chemical exposure. Van Gore’s studio is pretty isolated and shut tight, most likely with terrible ventilation. He may have died at a certain point after exposure to these deadly pigments

So about the Boos. Back in the day, Nintendo Power had graphic novel running in it that was loosely based on Super Mario World. I bring this up because in a ghost house, Dr. Mario has a therapy session with the Boos, and it's revealed that the reason they freeze up whenever someone looks directly at them is lingering trauma from bullying/abuse back when they were alive.
Now, I don't think that behavior actually applies to any of the Boos in the Luigi Mansion games, but it does kind of confirm they were alive at one point.

My personal theory is the Possessor ghosts were the original owners or inhabitants of the locations in Luigi's Mansion 2 and died in the following ways:
Grouchy Possessor: died from a spider bite from his pet tarantula
Harsh Possessor: died from either an argument with the sisters or fell down the stairs leading to the treehouse
Overset Possessor: work accident
Shrewd Possessor: died from either getting into a fight with the research team over the crystals, possibly for greed or freezing to death
Tough Possessor: crushed by a suit of armor or died from old age in the Dark Ages exhibit
The Brain was killed in a Home Alone 2 like event; he was very clever like Kevin, but when he was throwing the bricks of Marv and Harry, they threw the bricks back at him, hit him in the head, and killed him

My big theory is that the LM1 mansion burned down and took all the living people left inside it.
Neville: Died because of inhaling smoke/burned to death.
Lydia: Tried to escape from the fire by jumping off the window, but died.
Chauncey: Now this is odd; why would he be born as a ghost if he has human photos in his room? Also he is 1 year old: if he was born as a ghost, he'd be 0 years old, so maybe some sickness or once again, the fire.
Shivers: He burned to death, but he was the one that started the fire.
Mr. Luggs: Ate himself to death (it literally says it in his description) or ate too much (some translations say that).
Spooky: Died of starvation, not only for his mistreating owners, but also could be after his owners died. Also couldve died of animal abuse (the twin brothers were probably TOO playful with him).
Miss Petunia: Someone said that Nana played a joke on her while she was bathing and put ice cubes inside the bath, so maybe she slipped on one or slipped on a soap bar.

An old ghost hating candles makes sense. Back when candles were a popular light source, massive fires and fire related deaths were VERY common. Peoples clothing was flammable, and one wrong move was all it took to go up in flames.
I really like your personal take on their backstories. Ghosts in folklore and media are always described as recreating the cause of their death and are literally bound to the place of their death in the afterlife. The only reason why the ghosts are together in the mansion/hotel is because King Boo braught them there, so probably the haunted buildings were shaped around their memories.

if chauncie was born a ghost, one darker train of thought could be that her ghostly form was the result of a miscarriage.
In Luigi's Mansion 1, it always felt strange that a whole dead family is present. All of their ages still align, in the sense that mom, dad and children's ages are consistent with their roles in the family. It kind of implies they all died shortly after one another, which point to murder.
So maybe King Boo caused a lot of freak accidents? Another thought was a home invasion or family member that snapped, which ended terribly.
Vincent Van Gore was in the paint room for the entirety of Luigi's mansion and probably created every ghost in the mansion. And I think when he was alive, he was wasting away in his paint room for so long, that breathing in all the paint chemicals eventually killed him. Who knows, maybe he was into huffing.
And as for Henry and Orville, I would think they probably were playing hide and seek and got stuck, either suffocating to death or dying from dehydration since no one ever found them.

In the descriptions for mr luggs and sue pea it says how they died mr luggs ate himself and sue pea died while sleeping
I think for that one ghost in the second game that played piano probably died from the piano lid slamming shut onto his head, but that didn't kill him instantly and instead opened the door for a brain hemorrhage given how big and bulbous it is, possibly due to swelling.
Like, he was playing, something inside the piano broke, he got tools, opened the lid and propped it up and then got to work, only for the stand keeping the lid up to get knocked out of the way(whether by him hitting it or the lid being lifted more and the stand falling out of place meaning it didn't have the support to stay up on its own anymore), which lead to a situation where it slammed down onto his head, possibly knocking him out if it didn't kill him outright.
Maybe the piano didn't have a proper stand and he used some books as a stand-in. But they got knocked out the same way and he got piano lid.
Your description of Biff Atlas' death is very reminiscent of Lewis' death in Final Destination 3, who had his head crushed by weights

Entertaining theory, to say the least. But there is one quote from Dr. Gadd that cracks this whole theory wide open: "I've been living here since I was a lad of twenty or so, and I'll tell you: That mansion appeared just a few days ago! The spirits have fooled you!" This mansion, and all subsequent ones, are creations of the Boos to trap Luigi and his brother, Mario, once and for all! The answer is literally in the game, my guy.
So what? The video is about how the ghosts died. They were all real ghosts captured by E. Gadd over his years as a ghost hunter. King Boo freed them from the paintings and gathered them together in the ghost house the Boos created, but obviously they were real people with real deaths. The game even confirms it when it confirms some of their deaths (like the fat ghost dying of overeating, or the girl that died in her sleep.)
1:40 I have a rather morbid theory: what if being “born as a ghost” means that Chauncey is a stillborn?
I thought that since the stairs that the Harsh Ghost was possessing were on fire, maybe they were trying to escape a house fire and fell down the stairs. Which would either break their neck, spine, or any bones. That would lead to a quick and painless death or a slow and painful one as they burned alive, unable to escape.
It would’ve been a neat feature if Luigi’s Mansion 3 had a description of each ghost you caught that had a backstory of how they died
good theory's the one hint for the first game is that the murky ghost or the clover key boss is the builder of the mansion, and after he died 2 years after making it a curse was put on it that who ever lives in the mansion will die within two years.

Fun video.. old fan of the Luigi’s manshion but I’m honestly surprised, i always remember the first game having more clear details on those ghosts. The frame ghosts were all actually family in the manner but I was under the impression that bowser just asked king bo to bring in the lesser ghosts to scare Luigi.
As for the deaths in game 1, I was personally a fan of the “connected deaths” theory explaining it. the short version; Uncle grimly, whose death and job explains away a lot of the others, died before power could be restored to house. The outage then directly killed some residents, while others were a little bit later.
The lights went out and the weight lifter, pool player, and dancers may have been the first to die following the outage not being able to see what they were doing. the aunt more likely slipped and hit her head before drowning. the mother more likely fell out the window when she couldn’t see where she was going. The butler who would’ve been patrolling when this happened, maybe walked in on the bodies and was scared of the dark which is why he’s the only one with a light source. Piano player was a child who passed well before the events, supposedly it’s her grave located in the background of the dog’s backyard. That said The dog, baby, and children could all have died from neglect. Mother and father never went to check on the kids because they had already passed.
It made more sense that Nintendo wouldn’t actually let people be killed intentionally by a main cast member, even bowser. Nope, Wolfgeist definitely died from a piano accident. After all, dying peacefully of old age doesn’t make you mad enough to sabotage (“Sabotage? How? Where?”) your own stage or possess your own piano. You were right the first time, but so wrong with your final conclusion about Wolfgeist..
I dont know if anyone said this already, but if you look closely at the shape of the mirrors that the three sisters carry with them, they got the same shape as the pictures in the family living room of the haunted towers, indicating that they potentially lived there and owned the place before they died. Given by the many gardening rooms and the lab in the basement, their father could have been a scientist doing experiments on the plants (as we see the mutated venus flytraps and those orange flowers trapped inside of glass down in the basement where the laboratory is at) Now either, as it was said in the video, the sisters could have just gotten into an accident and those plants could have eaten them alive, or their father just became the usual evil scientist going all crazy and killing his family. Thats just my theory though
I have a theory for Chauncy's death. Since he was stated to be born as a ghost compared to actual boos, i thinking he died whenever the pregnant mother passed before childbirth was properly given
I think that, despite what the game states, Chauncey had to be a living baby at some point, because his nursery has a non-ghost picture of him on the wall.
Yeah, I figure that must’ve been it, like clearly Chauncey existed at some point and was expected, considering the nursery and everything. Nintendo saying that he was “born a ghost” was them just trying to skirt past the censors, but now it’s very obvious what they actually meant to say with Chauncey.
