Nancy and Gertrude are Kenyan girls about to face this brutal passage to womanhood. What this film does is to show how custom - even when violent and dangerous - embeds itself in social expectations. These girls are not considered eligible by prospective husbands until they have been cut; their parents need the income from a dowry to shore up precarious family finances. Standing out against such powerful conventions is difficult, dangerous, and costs money.

Because someone that loves her won’t pay the dowery her father wants. Love requires knowing a girl, and men don’t get to know girls until they’ve been bought and paid for. The men also think that a girl who has not been cut is dirty. She’s a humiliation, a clitoris is considered too much like a penis, and being with an uncut woman is considered almost akin to homosexuality. Also they think an uncut girl is lustful, licentious and likely to be unfaithful. Men mock men with uncut wives. They cut those parts away to make sex an act of submission, not pleasure for the woman. If sex is only pain who does it without obligation? A man only needs a hole to be satisfied, his wife’s pleasure doesn’t matter. She lets him do as he pleases then gets up and makes his breakfast and tends his house and he’s happy.

I'm proud to say that Nancy is a friend of mine. Nancy is now grown up and going further than her Pokot community to help fight cutting of girls. I met her at the UN Women's conference in New York where she spoke fiercely and passionately. She travels and speaks at conferences around the world. Last year she spoke at a seminar in London. She is now educated and speaks fluent English.

That mom was a real mom. She put herself on line to protect her daughter. The father ended up being so nice, he really does love his daughter.
It is important to preserve our traditions as Africans, but as we move forward and learning new things we also need to ensure that the injustices of the past are corrected.
Imagine being an investigative journalist and having to film and narrate all this without being allowed to intervene to help those girls and punching everyone in the face for wanting to mutilate a little girl.

that speech nancy gave to her mother in the village about the cycle of abuse was far wise beyond her years. for her to even understand this in an isolated situation being in her village is profound. she truly is an old soul, sent with the mission of breaking this cycle and changing her village/the world. truly inspiring.

I wrote a research paper on FGM is college. It being a "cultural practice" is not an excuse for this abuse. It's a violation of basic human rights, something everyone has.

i was cut when i was 7 years old and had my first surgery in 2020 and The emotional pain is far worse than any physical pain.

What a brave open minded man to change his mind with all the societal pressure and shame that comes with going against the culture, facing shame. He chose sympathy and empathy for his daughter. Change is possible.

When I had my son 17 years ago the government (of Canada) changed our OHIP coverage so that I would have had to pay for my son's circumcision which made me think it through a little more and do some research on whether it was actually needed... after I learned the truth I decided not to get him circumsized. Even though I was pressured to follow the "societal norm" by my family I refused to follow our Christian tradition that had no actual benefit. Many people told me why I was wrong, and I told them the facts on why I was right. Only education will help people change their minds, not your anger.
+brajamtho757 Ummm, male genital mutilation is not as severe as female, both the pain and how it looks afterwards, there are no benefits to do it to women, even if it's just for the looks...it doesn't make any of it right of course, no matter what gender..

A baby boy getting circumcised, or a young or older adult for that matter is NOT mutilation, as female circumcision is. Anyway, GOOD luck n God bless.

I truly commend that father for changing his mind on cutting his daughter. He was raised in a culture that believes this kind of thing is normal for women, so of course he wasn’t going to back down easily. But to see him have a change of heart and support his child in her future endeavors really brought tears to my eyes.

Fgm is the the removal of the inner labia and outer labia and the closure of the vulva which during child birth results in complications and high death rate as well as a host of problems such as recurrent infections, chronic pain, cysts, an inability to get pregnant, as stated before complications during childbirth and fatal bleeding.
