  • Fees and surcharges are just part of buying anything. Car dealers love to sneak in extra fees that could cost you thousands. Never pay these fees to a car dealer to ensure you get a great deal.

    I went in using these tactics. Dealership did not like the power struggle. I asked for the breakdown of the price and fees. They refused until I signed a chicken scratched “deal” on a piece of paper. I wasn’t going to sign anything. I said I don’t even know the fees. They said they won’t tell me the fees until they know I’m ready to do business with them. They wouldn’t even tell me their dealership fees…… I knew something was crooked

    Quick story - I watched the video then went to a Hyundai dealership for a pre-owned Lexus (it was a specific model I couldn't find in my town). Test drive was great and friendly, no real qualifying questions. The listed (dealer discount) price was $26k down from $29k. They hand me a paper that says $32k tax and fees included!!! I said please break this down. 10 minutes later and there are $4,100 of aftermarket accessories and fees for theft coating and nitrogen added into the price. Can't take them out. I told him directly I'm not paying for those. Scratched out the price and offered $24k plus tax and title. To be fair, It was a bit of a low ball, but I expected to be negotiating on the price. After back and forth the manager comes out and says he's on my side and the car is priced fairly, we look at carvana etc, etc with the cliche lines. Point blank I asked them, will you sell it to me for the advertised $26k, plus tax and licence (about $2500). He says they will try to get me close to $30k. They wouldn't budge. I was not happy because we drove 90 min to see the car. I said "this deal is walking out the door". And so we did. No deal. When we checked reviews online it seems to be the standard practice. They "discount" the price online, then bake in these aftermarket accessories so really we are meant to negotiate on the "extras" now, not the price of the car. It's bad business practice. I will be complaining everywhere I can, because it's deceptive. Anyone else feel this is somehow not legal?

    • @Estecuban
      @Estecuban 2 года назад +6

      It isn’t legal and that’s why Koons Kia here in Maryland has to repay customers all the bs fees they added in and have to sell the cars as advertised with the exception of standard fees like taxes and title

    A good tip is to look over everything you're signing during the financing phase. I had a finance guy try to get me to sign a VIN etching certificate. When I questioned him, he said he lowered the price of the car by 400 dollars so it would be 'free'. Even though it didn't change the overall cost of the deal, I still forced him to remove it. NEVER EVER PAY NO MATTER WHAT )
      Also, they attempted to give me $3k for my trade in when it's worth $5k.
      Told them I got a better deal elsewhere ( Carvana would give me $5.1k )
      He said rarely anybody ever really gets what their told with those websites. ( Huge lie, look up carvana trade in users reviews on RUclips or reddit )
      Told the guy that that's not true, won't accept anything below $5k. Stood my ground ready to walk out.
      He gave me $5k 😂

    If flashing "high mount" (third) brake lights had a definite safety benefit, then they would already be mandated under Federal law. In fact, when NHTSA was doing the original safety studies on the effectiveness of high mount brake lights in the early 1990s, one option they tested used a flashing light. The studies indicated that the flashing light was no more effective than the steady light.

    9:37 - "Dealers will never negotiate out the doc fee, there's too many legal ramifications"
    a. Name even 3 of these "legal ramifications"
    b. Why should these "legal ramifications" automatically prevent a negotiation?
    This sounds like vague scare words. Simply negotiating the purchase price has a "legal ramification" (i.e., the purchase contract changes) but no one cites that as a reason that a reason why a dealer would refuse to negotiate purchase price.
    IMO dealers may refuse to negotiate doc fees because they don't want to set a precedent, which has nothing to do with "legal ramifications" and everything to do with their business strategy.

Literally said, ok we'll give you 12,000 for it (which was way low) and then took off $250 to detail it, $50 for an oil change, and another $100 for the inspection. I was like, so it isnt 12k then, its 11,600. Then, tried to charge the same $250 detail charge on the brand new car as well as the blinky light for $300. I was laughing at them as I walked out. Never again will I set foot in that dealership. 8 months later in (Aug 2019) I get 13,500 for the same car when I bought my current car. No bs fees or add ons like the first one.

    Several years ago I bought a used GMC 1500 Denali, I got the third party extended warranty mostly because they knocked the price in half and I'm glad I did. About 4 months later it crapped 2 injectors. The truck still had the factory power-train warranty but that only covered the mechanical engine parts and not the electronics which an injector fell under. There were some other stuff that was covered by the factory warranty, all told the two coverages saved me almost $900.
    About 6 months ago I traded the truck in on a new truck, the only mention of GAP insurance was the finance guy saying "You got such a good deal you don't need it," OTD price was almost 10K below MSRP with a extended factory warranty. Checking the KBB trade vs what I owe I'm around 20k ahead right now.

    Now a big thing in fees is the reconditioning fee that car dealers are adding on. It should be added to the selling price of the car. In Florida your starting to see private tag agency fee under for about $200 when all they have to do in Florida is send the money for tag, tax, and title is pay directly to all the County Tax Collector offices. Plus on top of that they charge a registration filing fee which is the same thing for paying the tag fee. But using a third party for the service.
    Arrigo Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Fort Pierce Florida charges a reconditioning and dealer accessories fee of $998. For a total of $1381 on their disclaimer fees. Because they charge for the 3 sperate fees $200+$184+$998 plus on top of that they still charge the tax, title, and registration fees that go to the Tax Collectors office.

    • @Alsam
      @Alsam 3 года назад

      I think the reconditioning fee is BS too. They deem the person they bought the car from because it’s not in perfect condition. Why would they also charge the person they’re selling to because the car is not in perfect condition? Sounds like a double dip to me.

    Hi people should hear/know about this shady dealership in NJ. My son who's 24 and I went to a Hyundai dealership, and I asked for the out-the-door price. When the salesperson came back the price was almost $5,500 more than what the internet advertised price was. This was because he added $3,495 Certified pre-owned certification fee(CPO)??? This is actually a 10 year or 100,000 mile warranty, $1,000 non-Military fee and $1,000 Loyalty fee! The salesperson said because we WEREN'T Military it an extra 1K and an extra 1K because we had never bought a car with them before. This makes me mad 😡because those two are discounts you give to people who are eligible for them, these should not be a PENALTY or actually and excuse to just raise the price. I told the salesperson that we don't want the CPO we don't want because that's a warranty, but he said no thanks for the CPO - warranty. Salesman said "We only sell our cars with the CPO certification fee". The CPO is something you think about possibly getting as a warranty with the finance officer in the back. They are trying to do "Tied Selling" or bundling products as a force add-on 🤬

It will show all the fees that the dealership will charge. It will state something like the advertised price doesn't include taxes, title, registration, and tag fees or State inspection and smog fees. Then the dealership will disclose they will also charge a document fee of such amount and or other fees that they are profiting from.

I have no issues waiting for my new vehicle until I can get the pricing I want on it and paying over more on it is def not happening.

      Hi Kari I just experienced this yesterday. Very bloody the salesman said they were offering the car 15% over the MSRP 😳 mind you not the invoice price but the MSRP 🙄. So yesterday he quoted me $61k for the 2022 Kia Telluride SX trim 🤔. Sir, u crazy and I’m not desperate!!!

    With the way the market is as of May 27, 2021. What’s some tips on buying a gm truck right now? I had a salesman talk to me and said man you’d be better off building the truck u want on the Chevy or gmc website because of the wait time right now waiting on parts I’d be waiting the same amount of time. My question is do y’all know of any big incentives gm may be offering by August, September 2021? Would I be better to wait with the flood of the market at that time? Or just go ahead n build and wait and not worry with any new incentives?

    When I asked the dealer if there were any other fees for purchase of new Honda HRV EX other than MSRP AND TAXES, they responded with we add a protector package which includes wheel locks door edge & film door cup film guaranteed for lifetime that you own the car. Lastly is perma plate interior and exterior paint protection. $687 $395 prep & detail license fee and $150 doc fee....these should all be a no...correct? Thank you for your great videos!

      Bought my new car today. I waited until they presented me with the final cost breakdown, and told them I was ready to buy, but I needed them to credit the $687 paint protection pkg and wheel locks and $395 prep, they said they already put it on the car. I said I didn't ask for it, and I can't believe you would charge me to prep a new car, so I need you to take it off the MSRP, and also take the $150 doc off the MSRP.......and they did it. Thanks Mike

    So what do you do when the salesman responds to your "I don't want the rain guards and complimentary plate.. deduct that from my total and take them off" with a "well I don't want the spoiler on your trade in; I'll take that off and deduct it from our trade in price"?

    I walked into a dealership looking for a 2019 Corolla SE in falcon grey metallic back in August of 2018. They had one sitting right outside, I told the sales person that I was not going to pay a cent over 20k flat. He said there was nothing they could do about the fees. I looked right at him and said, “listen I know you want the commission on this transaction and I want to take this car home TODAY”. He went back to his “boss” and gave me the car for 20k. I refused to pay bullshit fees.

    It's like we should go to dealers and (practice) with the intent to never buy......hummm? Until we feel confident with our purchase

    Do you have any video that talks about buying new cars? We are in the market for a Honda Odessey but seeing how Used car prices are so high we might just buy a new one. Thanks!

    What about the desert protection coating package and window tint for about $100 each. Even on used cars! In Arizona I am pretty darn sure that used vehicle already had window tint on it when they purchased it yet they want to turn around and charge you for something that was already on the car!

    Funny about doc fee because I bought a tbss and a cruze from the same dealer without one. My cruze I made the deal over the phone while sitting at another dealer that didn't want to budge on vehicle or additional fee's. Maybe it was in the purchase price, even if they were thousands less than the others and were no hassle. Walked in sat down, configured tbss and had a price all in 20 minutes.
