I'd rather have a Mk7.5 Golf over both of these.
I’d rather have a Leon…
I’d rather have a Skoda
I'd rather have a Toyota and have Zero Problems and a 10 year warranty.
To be honest I’d go for a Mk 7 with the hard keys down each side of the touchscreen.
7.5 GT in Tornado red, best car I had. I changed it for a new mark 8 Golf and really wished I hadn’t
I drove new BMW's for 25 years. I managed to get over my brand snobbery and was very happy with a Golf 7.5. I'm not a fan of the Mk 8, so bought a Skoda. Over the moon with it, and a lot cheaper.
The new Golf Variant is cheaper than an Octavia (both face-lift)
Much rather have the A3 s-line as the Golf looks awful in base spec.
Great presenter and interesting to watch him review practicality as many are similar size to him in the real world!
Thank you! It’s interesting to see everyone’s responses and choices - Tim
Great review! I appreciate the slightly more practical Golf, but the snob in me likes the A3 with its premium interior, physical buttons and overall stylish looks. On the occasion I have passengers, they’ll have to suck it up at the back if they’re above average height! An older A3 in good condition seems to be good value.
I would rather an 8 year old Volvo v40 R design over either - much better build, look better and incredibly refined.
Your coat compliments the VW's exterior very well.
Haha, thank you! I'm glad my eyes don't match. -Tim
Front parking sensors and more legroom in the back - Golf is the clear winner
But look at it… 😂
@@joehoughton2872if u want rline gotta pay more little buddy
I can't stand the failure of an infotainment system on the Mk8 Golf. 🤢
Great video - be keen to compare how these two stack up against the Seat Leon FR!
And the Skoda Fabia!
@@Nayr_uk The Fabia is in a different class of car. The Scala would be a more useful comparsion from the Skoda stable.
@@Nayr_uk
Fabia is on the same platform as the A1, Polo and Ibiza
5:35 those rear air vents look horrendously cheap. Honestly the A3 interior is no nicer than the Golf quality wise; the only reason you'd pick the A3 is if you want physical climate switches and a premium badge, otherwise pick the Golf.
Just got a 21 plate Cupra Leon Plug in for under 20k so some deals to be had!
Skoda scala has a bigger boot 460 ltrs And more room in the back seats, with plenty of vw and Audi stickers under the bonnet..
Das Audi's looks are top notch! Das Blau ist klasse! The VW needs more buttons.
Great idea of video comparison genius thanks
Rather have a FABIA Monte Carlo
Why do you keep saying top spec Audi A3. Top spec is Vorsprung not S-line.
Audi doesn't always do a Vorsprung trim though (usually on a run-out of a model), so we picked the more common 'top spec one'. -Tim
Found this clip in Chrome suggestions, and I absolutely loved it! Great work!
Thank you! -Tim
Just about to hand my fantastic 520d back to lease company. The brand new Golf 1.5tsi in Match trim has drifted onto my radar unexpectedly... All the kit I need, decent enough to handle the motorway and comfortable for my 6ft plus frame. And a lot cheaper than the gorgeous BMW. As I have reduced my overall mileage and want more sensible pricing the Golf is a very attractive proposition. I will have to adjust I know but its so good I cant dismiss it off the list. Will mean having to operate a clutch again... 😂..
Gun to my head, I'd take the A3. The latest VAG cars seem to have forgotten what ergonomics means.
Doesn't matter how fancy the infotainment system is if it's absolute crap to use. Life's too short to be fighting with a fiddly slider on a touchscreen at 70mph when you have an exit coming up in 100 yards, but to change the volume.
How did the VAG group go from having some of the best in-cabin ergonomics + infotainment to one of the worst in the industry?
The specs on audi, bmw and Mercedes are absolutely terrible, so on that basis I'd have the golf. I own an A6, and I could never understand the appeal of buying small so called premium brands, eg, an a3, a 1 series or an a class. You're only paying for the badge, so once again, golf.
The golf system is terrible. Takes ages to start on cold mornings and I find the touch screen quite dangerous when you're driving and trying to use it.
I'd go for one of the wealth of other brands out there offering 5 to 10 year warranties. What do these cars offer that a Corolla hybrid doesn't? Especially the 2.0 version.
Both overpriced and aren’t they basically the same car underneath, I have estate 5 series all the car you could ever need
Tim’s puns 😅
Don't encourage me… -Tim
the beep hurt my ears way too loud
Id go for a previous gen S3 low miles for similar price
This so called comparison is not really a fair one. You criticise the A3, for missing out on some spec, though what would the differences be if you compared two cars of the same age, price difference aside and pricing not being worlds apart perhaps? Complaining as you did about rear seat leg room at your above average height would have been taken into account by a showroom visit/test drive that all sensible buyers would do.
Yes, but the idea of videos is so people can do research from home! And the point of the video was to match a price point... thanks for watching! -Tim
@@motorpoint Yes, but... a potential buyer cannot gauge the comfort level from the rear bench, by just watching a video clip, however subjectively amusing it might be. If the point of the video is to simply match a price point, then why simply pick two clearly related vehicles, rather than two more closely matched... you cannot have it both ways.
@@motorpoint Oh and your clearly labelled (!) insincere gratitude comment for watching, only debilitates any point that may contain an element of sincerity.
I don’t get why the comparison isn’t fair…
The Audi is the premium. What this comparison simply highlights to me is that the base Golf Life comes with more than an A3 S Line.
If they had compared a Golf R Line of a similar age, it would’ve won. It has more things on top of the Golf Life that just beat the A3 S Line.
@@projectr2451 Given the so called qualification you provided, following the initial sentence, no one is in any way surprised as to why you don't get it.
Golf does it for me. It will still be worth more than the Audi, being newer, and will probably be easier to sell (because it's a Golf). But I'm biased 🤣
Lots of first world problem! 🙄
Mazda 3 is better then both of them
Perfect sensible advice
Please do more of like this comparison, e.g. skoda karoq vs vw Tiguan or adui q3. Cheers
That's the plan! :) -Tim
Tim, it maybe my imagination, but you seemed to talk even faster than usual in this video.
Is that even possible?! -Tim
Hyundai any day
or buy the skoda thats the same car again but alot cheeper
Skoda's price difference isn't what it once was, but yes they tend to cost a bit less. You also get more spec for your money...
The Golf is ugly and the Audi looks fantastic, That’s the main difference
Subjective, as stated in the video. Looks and sound will always be subjective. But the video simply shows a new Golf seems to offer better for the money
@@projectr2451 I have an Audi A3 now and previously owned a golf mk8. It’s not just the design, everything feels better in the A3, the seats are way better, the media system is much better, the materials in the interior an so on… not to mention all the quality problems I had with the golf.
@@eriklarsson8153
And that’s a fair comment. Looks wise will always be subjective, but your experience will be your experience and I understand. I have a Mk7.5 and personally prefer it over either of the two in the video.
Why does this guy use so much personification 😂
Sorry - can't help it! -Tim
Verdict
Under 35 ,take the audi
Over 35 ,take the golf.
Where did you get that logic from?
Both wsy over priced and after there money pits😂
Nothing posh about an Audi or "the peoples car".
I wouldn't have either. Neither feel as premium inside as the current Honda Civic.
The honda civic strats at 35k and dosent even have a digital dash
Reversing cameras aren’t mandatory on all new cars in the UK?
Nope! -Tim
There’s really not a lot to like? Harsh 😀
If I’m going to have a basic practical car, I’d take the newer and much more frugal Golf.
Also as more warranty remaining.
Vanity isn’t a consideration.
The presenter is on form today 🥸
Thank you! -Tim
