I think the GTi definitely has its place. I leased a mk8 Golf R without adaptive suspension and I just found it crashy and loud. It’s rapid and holds the road almost as well as an Elise in my opinion but on short commutes all that performance was wasted and even in eco mode it was loud. I think the GTi has enough power for most situations but the eco / comfort settings will win it for me. The cost difference to an R with adaptive will be way more than you suggest. Even late mark 8’s are over 50k

I know it's just a little, very minor thing to be turned off by, but golf ball knob is a tradition and for VW to ditch them all together with manual transmission in a GTI is just a "wth are they thinking" moment for me. The 7.5 was so much nicer. The steering wheel alone with the real metal silver brace and high quality buttons... The significantly larger instrument display.. The covering of the A Pillar corner with high quality matte plastic (completely missing on the 8). In Germany it's impossible to turn off the lane assist permanently.. Every single time you turn your car on it is turned on. The honeycomb seats option ❤ It's just sad. I'd buy another new 7.5 in a heartbeat.

I know I’m going against the flow, but the 8.5 GTI now comes with the winter pack and rear view camera as standard plus you can add a few options to keep it under £40K. Why pay nearly another £2k tax which I hate doing plus the uplift to a Clubsport or an R as the car will be for wife and me to play with at the weekend. Totally get it if ultimate performance and experience is your thing by the time I add additional interest charges/tax/uplift looking at least another £5k pays for the mountain bike I’ve bought. Agree though not sure on the GTI logo below the mirrors! Go easy on me it’s all about choice!

Price difference in the EU is much bigger as shown in the Video (+3,5k Clubsport, +9k R). Also, you can't get the Clubsport with a hitch - important for people, which carry Bikes regulary. Finally, Clubsport and R needs premium petrol (98+), normal GTI not. So overall best balanced choice clearly is the GTI.

As the owner of a nicely modded 17 MK7 GTI SE, I have to say that it’s good that VW listened and put the real buttons back on the steering wheel. But that giant IPad screen is horrific IMO and far to large. I still believe that the MK7 gen has the best cockpit layout and hardware and with a few easy and cost effective mods I can easily surpass the power of a stock MK8.5.
