I see that car every time I go out. It's the one that sits 2 inches from my back bumper with 'bangin tunes' blasting out then performs the death defying overtake with the bus coming the other way. Well done, Matt, you've 'de boy racered' it 😊
Had an 04 3 door 1.6 petrol for 8 years, bought it at 8 years old and kept it til it was 16 years old, absolutely loved it. So well put together especially the interior, lovely gearbox, the dual climate control was great on a small car of that age, very rare back then. Such a comfortable and pleasant car to drive. Wish I'd kept it.
I've never owned a manual or no-aircon car because I don't want to fiddle with it. just keep it on auto all the time and change only temp as needed. never had any aircon issue on any car, not even regassed.
My wife has a 16 year old A3 2.0 TDi too. She’s had it for 12 years and it has never failed its MOT. She loves it and has no desire to get anything more modern. It still drives brilliantly
Still got a 2.0 tdi 07 A3 and it's wonderful. 170k miles on the clock and only just had to replace clutch and flywheel from original of 18 years. They don't make them like they used to.
I've got an A3 S-Line quattro hatchback, the 3 doors look so much better, but aren't as practical. Mines done 232,000 miles and drives better than a lot of newer cars I've driven. Can't fault it, such a good little run about.
My first and present car is a 07 A3 8p 1.6 sportback. I adore the thing. Have had it Two years never any problems with and is cheap as chips to insure and tax here in Ireland. Great cars !
Had an 07 golf with the same engine, been an absolute solid car for me. Owned it for 5 years with no issues. My mother is now driving the car, 120k miles, still going strong!
Living in the tropics, every car you see has those window shields. They're not just wind deflectors, they allow for the windows to be open a crack for ventilation and keep the rain out running or parked. Also you can't see that the windows are open. Oh and it's 30° plus and humid here today😉
Since cars don’t have a gutter along the top of the doors anymore rain comes in to the cabin. Useful for vapists and smokers when it’s raining which is most of the time in the uk.
I had a 53 reg 2.0 tdi sport 3 door. It was my first proper company car and I thought I was the dogs bollocks! Suspension was too firm but the engine and gearbox was really good. The engine will go forever and they are a really solid car. I'd just want working aircon!

I’ve got only 117k on mine and have owned it since 2021. The aircon still blows stone cold and it still has that Audi smell they all had from that era. Call me biased but its a great run-around / second car
7:58 it actually says, according to my wife, “you will have no worries in middle age, you will have a lot of food and in later life you will be wealthy” or some such shit.
Prestige wheels must be giving you a good deal. Full set, strip down , recon, dent removal/rebuild, new base coat and repowder coat for 280 quid is a deal and easily added double that to the value of the car !😄😄
Hi Matt, basically the older the Audi the better! We have an Audi A4 TDi 90BHP(1996) in the family, everything still works, even the aircon! That 2.0TDi engine is pretty bullet-proof but do change the oil and oil filter every 5k miles to keep it running well.
I’m glad you share my ridiculous knowledge on these old busses. As for the OY number plate, VW are based in MK and more often than not they pre reg a lot of demos and things there. As for the smell, I agree, the smell of the VAG era were legendary.
I love your justification for 'saving' another car, plus the car was in decent condition and as you say, driving it with consideration can make the difference in the life span. Carly is great, I've not used it for anything else than clearing fault codes (re-occurring ones too), so I should try the other features.
Was hoping youd pop the bonnet to have a look at the engine, 2008 is the crossover between facelift and pre-facelift I dont know enough about A3's to sport which this is, so its either a 2.0TDI PD170 or CR170. I loved the PD170 very tuneable engine.
In some instances the AC repairs on these aren’t too bad. You mentioned a high-pressure fault code. Often on these the high pressure sensor cracks internally and allows the refrigerant to leak out. They are pretty easy to change and parts aren’t expensive.
Love these type of videos Matt. Will it be saved/wont it be saved jeopardy type storyline. You’ve done the right thing with this one. £1500 runaround for your business, perfect. Well done.
It's really a good car for about 1500 quid, however i think it would be even less hot in there with no leather seats, and also more modern with the cruise control. Also being a 2008 model,if it's the 140hp ha the bmn code engine, that has no head issues as the bkd engine code. My dad has one identical to this with about 253.000 miles on the clock (about 407.000km here in Italy) and it goes really well: he uses it for word every day and the car never stopped since day one. It has original clutch, suspension and 16 wheels cause 17 are too stiff for our road. The only issue it the car roof that has to be repeared.
If you do sell it Matt, then expect to see it tailgating you at some point with the obligatory base ball cap wearing driver mouthing swear words at you for going too slow! It's a lovely car though.
They are good, solid cars. A bit frightening they’re so old though. I bought one new in 2009 after a few years of running old bangers. Audi were doing a finance deal which meant the A3 cost me less a month than I was spending maintaining my old Vectra! It was only a 1.6 petrol so was a bit slow but was a Technik edition so had Bose stereo and bigger wheels. I only kept it a couple of years but it was one of those cars which could have lasted forever if cared for.
Tow bar is a selling point. Bought a cheapish car in 2017 with a towbar fitted. When getting quotes declaring the towbar made the insurance up to £100 cheaper. Food for thought.
Audi, absolute class. I have a 2005 Audi tt . Runs superbly and is like new 😊😊.My daughter has a 2004 Audi tt ,again quality car. Looks and drives like new. Have fun with the car 😊 Matt 😊
You were so right Matt, those black wheels and spoiler looked shocking, it now looks like, if not new, certainly not a 2008 car, a wise choice to hang on to it as a runaround.
Those wind window deflectors you hate Matt are great when eating a McDonald’s in the car park when it’s raining , gives a good flow of air without getting the door panel wet. Plus they look cool !
Loving the video. They are great cars. Proud owner of an Audi A3 2.0TDI 2005 240K Miles. Things just keep going, granted, after replacing many parts. So it you want to buy a high milage, slightly more rusty looking S-line DSG version with minor coolant and oil leaks let me know :)
I still have this car. 370xxx km and still going strong. It mostly sits in the parking lot now but its always there for the job when needed. My wife bought it when we started dating like 10 years ago and we travelled all over Europe with that. Never missed a beat. Love it.
A friend of mine recently had an aircon issue with an A4 2.0 tdi and it turned out to be a leaky sensor. New sensor and a regas and Bob's your uncle. Might check it out on that A3, if it's a cheap fix it's always worth doing, especially if you're borrowing the car to customers or are considering selling the car at a later date.
My daughter drives a 2006 Quattro version of this A3 2.0 TDi and it is a pocket rocket. It's done a100,000 miles with regular servicing it is remarkably reliable. Passed out MoT every year no issues and recently had a timing belt and water pump done. Once again, I wish I had Jimmy the Magician living near me! Thanks for the video and I hope you get the same great service from your A3. No numberplate replacement?
Just part ex'd my black 1.9tdi A3e for £1500. It was 2008 with years MOT, 110k new cambelt & water pump and service just done. Bodywork was extremely good for the year (envy of the neighbourhood). Didn't expect to find my new car so quick (Skoda Yeti Tdi 2011 with 75k miles). That's the way it goes!
I can certainly see the benefit having something fairly smart-looking when turning up to collect cars. It's those little bits of professional presentation that really make a reputation, at least in my mind. And even though it's old, that A3 is perfect for that role. The wheels really lift the whole car, so much better than the dirty black look, definitely worth the money.
Had a 170 hp A3 Quattro S Line diesel. Drove it over 130,00 miles. Did one trip into Europe over 5000 miles, a good car but started to have issues after 15 years of use.
Had a 2010 Black Edition version of that car Matt. It was stunning and built like a tank. Did about 40000 miles in it and never failed once. Brilliant cars.
Bravo Matt, great to see you not massively overspending and achieving an awesome reeeeesult with this Audi. Should have done the 70 quid valet though mate, it's well worthy. Any way, wishing you and team HPA wonderful miles and smiles with this lovely motor. Cheeeers from Mauritius.
Had one of these, the older 2006 140bhp 2.0 TDI version. Car was well built, doors were heavy. Around town I’d get around 30ish mpg but on the motorway between 45-50mpg. I had the base SE trim and the seats weren’t that comfortable. Better cars out there for the money IMO. I think a lot of German cars are overrated
Finally... somebody who shares the same level of disdain for black wheels on silver cars as I do! You can't see the wheels. And wind deflectors (baulks)
Hello I've been watching your channel for while and it's got me interested in cars again and Saturday I'm picking up a 2015 jaguar 2.2 portfolio can't wait I've always wanted to own a JAG keep up the good work.
You've picked the best engine for that model so with regular servicing you should have many happy years of motoring.Hope enjoy your new car and have some great trips in it 👍
I've had 2007 170bhp sportback. When warmed up it really was great motorway cruiser. Bags of torque. But it was the PD engine with the worst DPF the 1st edition. After moving to Cambridge I've sold it for a petrol car to save my self from a big bill. I think You have the CR engine which is much better. Have it stage 1 and you will see a big improvement 😅
I have the next model A3 1.4 petrol COD motor with S Tronic bought new in 2014 and it has been a great car. Economical, a lovely drive and a quality interior, better than the current model which has had some cost cutting. I also had a Mk4 Golf GTI Manual which was also a great car, often criticised when compared to the Mk 5, but totally reliable and an interior where VW had really lifted their game.
The strange feature on the parcel shelf is a sun shade and also very useful for blocking blinding headlights from the rear. An option on the A3. These are great cars as well.
I had my A/C regassed at one garage - was ice cold for about 5 mins then went back to warm, the second place I asked to investigate why it ran out so quickly - said they wouldn’t do it as my condenser was shot and said would be a waste of time until that was replaced so I just put the window down now, i wasn’t paying anywhere from £200-£400 for the sake of A/C
I have a 2010 Black A3 5 door (1.4TFSI - 122BHP) As my first car and honestly it’s amazing - picked it up last year on 32k Miles and it’s been a great little car for me. I just wish it was a little more powerful like the 1.8 or 2.0 TFSI but then again it is only my first car.
Hey Matt! I am so glad to hear you say that you don’t like cars with tow bars attached. I agree 💯! If you need to tow, buy a truck. Car + trailer or camper = stupid. Or as we say, lake trash lol. Don’t mean to offend anyone! Just Texas Slang
I was going to take on my dad's 58-plate A3 Cabrio then he decided to go and stack it instead. Echo your point about how on earth 2008 was now 16 years ago. We're now at a point where if you watch early Top Gear episodes, the 'new' cars featured are pretty much all in the scrap yard now. Loved the 'vape vents' reference, I cannot understand why people go mad for those Team Heko monstrosities. Have ended up with an Abarth 500 which has been just as much work as I expected from the A3!
Problem with Carly is their flaky support and that the one I have doesn’t support most common functions on my low mileage 2013 Golf GT. Things like programming a new battery, pretty basic stuff. They did give a partial refund but I’m still left with with an expensive plastic box. They don’t give online refunds at all for the purchase as they are in Germany
5th gear done the test a few years ago. It is much much better to have more worn out tyres on the front. If front loooses grip it is fairly easy to correct. If back swings - not so much. They have trested in the rain on the bend. I agree with them.
What a difference those wheels made - my current Exeo 2.0 TDi has 185k miles and my previous one had 225k miles when I sold it - both engines never missed a beat - I am sure the A3 will run for years yet. Great video .
Love these Audis, they run for ever with the proper amount of care and this one was well worth the effort. However, not a fan of U2 save one song?! That is a bridge too far, sir!
dont like black wheels on any car really personally, the nearside wing on video when it was first being filmed looked a tad of a blue hue to it, looked slightly off colour, but im sure you could flog it in 2 years and still get yr money back
Those front tyres and the state of the wheels and the interior say everything you need to know about the previous owner but saying that I do believe there's life left in this Audi 👍
I bought 2 or 3 Audi A4 2,0d that were 4 years old back in 2009, they had done 111,000 miles they drove like new decent acceleration, cheap cars back then £5000 each

Fantastic cars that if looked after, will definitely look after you. Had my mk2 2.0 TDi for 8 years and never cost a penny outside of servicing.
So interesting to witness the process of Matt conving himself he should keep and car and actually going through with it!
Had the same 2010 black edition quattro 2.0 tdi and it needed a turbo at 33k just out of warranty.
Chopped it for a BMW which I still have.
Thats nothing mate. Im going 240K kilometers in it and it runs like a dream still
Still riding my 2003 A3. Its a 2 door 2.0 TDI. I got a big Android multimedia and a rear camera to refresh it a bit. What more would you want?

Do you have an " I massively overspent" scent 😂😂😂
"Massively overspent" scent just smells like petrol
It smells of roses
@@paulmcgee1867smells of freshly burnt £20 notes you mean 😀
Call it 'I massively over-scent'
Very strong cars, when looked after properly. Great job 👏
Nice one Matt, well worth saving, Surely worth a couple of grand of anybody's money. The alloys make all the difference, great job.
Finally... somebody who shares the same level of disdain for black wheels on silver cars as I do! You can't see the wheels.
And wind deflectors (baulks)
Hello I've been watching your channel for while and it's got me interested in cars again and Saturday I'm picking up a 2015 jaguar 2.2 portfolio can't wait I've always wanted to own a JAG keep up the good work.
You've picked the best engine for that model so with regular servicing you should have many happy years of motoring.Hope enjoy your new car and have some great trips in it 👍
@@Phuc_Yhou thanks for the comment it will be my pride and joy for many years hopefully.👍
@Phuc_Yhou disagree, the 3LTR is much more fun in my opinion
I've had 2007 170bhp sportback. When warmed up it really was great motorway cruiser. Bags of torque. But it was the PD engine with the worst DPF the 1st edition. After moving to Cambridge I've sold it for a petrol car to save my self from a big bill. I think You have the CR engine which is much better.
Have it stage 1 and you will see a big improvement 😅
Golf and A3 share same underpinnings, along with Leon and Octavia so I suppose they might seem similar. Great video.
You had a good idea and it worked. Think about getting the air-conditioning done as it not only works in the summer but is useful in the winter.
Nice job matt another one saved and a great little runaround for you 👍
The strange feature on the parcel shelf is a sun shade and also very useful for blocking blinding headlights from the rear.
Trust me where I live, there's no money I wouldn't spend for the AC repair, it's unbearable
I'd do the cambelt and water pump. It'll go on forever. I have a 2014 model. Great cars.
I had one, trim issues on delivery, oil problems and engine failure later and add to that the strangest ride ever at times.
Well done...great run around car...
One of the most remarkable transformations I’ve seen on here, Matt. Well done.
Hey Matt! I am so glad to hear you say that you don’t like cars with tow bars attached. I agree 💯! If you need to tow, buy a truck. Car + trailer or camper = stupid. Or as we say, lake trash lol. Don’t mean to offend anyone! Just Texas Slang
To be fair those 2.0 BKD engines are great. I’ve got the same car on 255,000 and doesn’t miss a beat
Agree 100% about black wheels, very chav'y and naff. Looks so much better now.
140 is the older pd 170 is the newer cr common rail engine. The 170s are a very good engine I'm my experiance
I have a 55 plate 1.9 PD TDI A3. Over 260k miles now and it's great.
Matt, you could have picked up 4 x Audi wheels in sliver with good tyres for around £100, ,and scrap those black wheels for around £60🎉
Matt, get a new condenser for that and the a/c will be fixed. It's worth doing. Going around without a/c can be awful. Nice car that!
Totally agree on the wheels. I don't get black wheels, instant way to devalue a car!
Wonderfull seeing you bring back life to these old cars, wheel refurb, dent repair and a new set of plates has transformed the car.
Nice Sainsburys bag as well , result .
5th gear done the test a few years ago. It is much much better to have more worn out tyres on the front. If front loooses grip it is fairly easy to correct. If back swings - not so much. They have trested in the rain on the bend. I agree with them.
Good content! look after it and it will last longer than 2 years for sure!
Hi Matt, car looks great, too good for a tip run car. Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged.
dont like black wheels on any car really personally, the nearside wing on video when it was first being filmed looked a tad of a blue hue to it, looked slightly off colour, but im sure you could flog it in 2 years and still get yr money back
Had a 2004 Audi A3 as my second car and wish I never sold it. They are brilliant cars that just keep going
Those front tyres and the state of the wheels and the interior say everything you need to know about the previous owner but saying that I do believe there's life left in this Audi 👍
I bought 2 or 3 Audi A4 2,0d that were 4 years old back in 2009, they had done 111,000 miles they drove like new decent acceleration, cheap cars back then £5000 each
That is a nice explorer 2 you were wearing 😀
