I've always wondered what it's like being a car enthusiast in a place that isn't car-friendly (e.g. The Nordics, The Netherlands, Singapore) What do Danish car enthusiasts commonly drive?
What a cracking little car! While I was growing up, my Dad had a number of different cars including Granadas, Range Rovers and Jaguars, but the best car he ever had in my opinion was a brand new Volvo 740GLE. My oldest brother also had a from-new 240 Torslander estate. Superb cars!

Alas, I will be the Volvo nerd by saying the colour of that C30 is 476 - Brilliant Blue Pearl. A very nice colour across the P1 range. Rare combo being the 2.4 petrol and an early C30 SE with lovely Mestra alloys. Ok, I'll stop now 😅

I’ve always loved this Volvo model Matt, they look so good, a nod to the old P1800’s . Sorry but that’s far too nice to use as a courtesy car, that’s sacrilege so it’s nice that you decided to sell it. Lady Luck was with you on that one 😁
Always thought these were a great looking underrated car. I can see people being put off by the big engine but the 5cyl Volvo engine is a peach and worth the extra running costs for the fun factor it will bring to that car. For three grand you could stick a cheap non aging plate on it and people would presume it cost three times that amount….. if only I had more room in my garage! 😊
Having had two c30's from new I still love them. Style is great, handling based on the focus is superb and that 2.4 engine is the detuned version of the T5. I like the way they decided to put two proper seats in the rear, rather than squeeze in three useless ones. Great cars to drive and I have done over 100k in them.😁😁
Lovely car, I still remember the launch car with two tone, white top half and copper bottom. Really iconic design with the glass back lid... Modern cars don't have this type of design flair anymore...
Did you do a gearbox service? Get the AC repaired/ regassed? Glad the car is living again. I drive the older rear wheel drive Volvo's. Had 740, 240 and now a 940 since 2016. Timing belt I get it done every 5 years or 50k miles whichever comes first. My 940 only does 2k miles a year. Cambelt labour £150. I buy genuine Volvo belt and tensioner. My engine is non interference, so good.
6:35 Yes that should be black. One strange thing I remeber about the C30 was that it was available in Sweden with different wraps direct from the factory. I don't know if this was ever available on any other market. We are not talking one colour wraps but wraps in different patterns. They were all rather wierd and expensive. It didn't sell well. I think it was only available the first model year.
In my humble opinion one of the nicest looking hatches made, so different from all the SUV or crossover type of things nowadays. Which is why I own a 2011 2.0 petrol R design and plan to keep it as long as possible. If I have a complaint the seats are bit hard on your backside on a long journey (very un Volvo like) well not like my old V70 but that is it. Oh and if you get the hard cover for the luggage compartment it looks much nicer.
This episode made me immediately go and loo for a C30, had almost forgotten how much I loved them back then. Thanks for having an inner conflict now (no, I really don't need a 4th car ;) )
Love the 2.4 5 cylinder Volvo engine. I drive a 2002 S80 2.4 Auto, it can be seen on the HubNut youtube channel and it is one of the best cars I've ever owned.
Just checked and here in Finland theres 2 of these for sale, same engine+gearbox combo, 2007 qnd similar milage. One is 8500€, the other 9000€. UK cars are do cheap, but this is well worth the money for someone. Been thinking of getting one for my better half as she quite likes my V70... Maybe one day 🤔
I bought a two litre petrol sport with that interior in 2007. It to was not the best on fuel, the only problems were two air con compressors, Ford parts, and lower control suspension arms, not much for 85k, the seat went in the same place, common fault small things but a great car.Marshall tyres, a mate of mine used to do heavy recovery trucks buses etc, and would only get Marshall’s. He said the side walls were much stronger than other tyre , and with his truck plus a loaded wagon, he knew what he was talking about.
That car was way too good to scrap. Shame their were no goodies in the car for you. Always good to see the wonder grip van has come home, to visit parents 🤣🤣 Great video and content.
Glad you finally made a video about the C30! I had a white 2009 1.6 petrol for 2 years and I almost regret selling it (for a nice profit too), having a company car meant I only drove it on weekends and I felt it wasn't worth keeping at that time. They are comfy and safe cars that stand out while looking way more modern than they are. From what I've seen most of those seats have a habit disintigrating and I was lucky to find 2 front seats (white leather) from a 2013 model. Definitely a viable and reliable first car for beginners!
My daughter bought a 2010 1.6 petrol as her first car at 17, she loves it, I had the timing belt changed for pea e of mind and it's a fantastic first car for her, she's been driving a year now and insurance has come right down for her too. It's a bit quirky and was a wild card when she was looking for her first car and I'm so glad we found it, it's a solid reliable comfortable car.
I had a Volvo C30 SE Lux (face lift) and it was a great little car, you can get a better hard parcel shelf for it and an R Design spoiler for the tailgate; but it looks like a great car.
If the cambelt was done 7 years ago it needs replacing immediately. Ok it's done very little mileage but the rubber and fabric belt degrades over time hence 60,000 miles or 5 year intervals. If you sell that on with a warranty it's going to be a huge claim when that belt loses teeth or snaps. Bye bye engine.
Great job. I know I'm splitting hairs but you did talk about a gearbox service (which you always emphasize the importance of), and the rear windscreen wiper. You said around £120 for gearbox service. How much for rear wiper? I don't know under £50 maybe. That eats into your profit - is it ok to pass that on to the new owner? Would you tell them? I think it's a great little beast and if I were in the market would seriously look at it if I knew what still needed to bring it up to scratch. Love your show Matt. It's relaxed, fun and informative.
Fair point, but the gearbox service is a nicety rather than essential. It drove without issue, so nothing major wrong. He's not keeping it for himself & he isn't a charity for the next owner, who'll probably be a volvo enthusiast who will get it done themselves. If I was buying it at £3k, it's a good negotiating point to knock off £150-£200 from the asking price. Everyone wins then 👍.
I had a 2008 2.0L one. It was a bit weak but very reliable. I only had 2 issues: engine mountings and my handbrake got stuck a few times and had to have it fixed. It was written off in a big accident with not a scratch on me.
VERY IMPORTANT Note on removing the tinting off the rear window: the defrost will be completely broken now that you removed it and will need either replacing the glass or fixing it with a kit, trust me it happened to us with my moms car
This was one of the best cars I have ever owned , r design version. Was super cheap to run and insure. The look was something special and when the red body work was buffed up it really looked special. Loved the drive too.
Belting old girl! Always liked the styling of the C30, and the chassis is sport enough, without ruining the ride comfort. I was worriwd that you would persuade yourself to keep it mind. Definitely got enough old cars kicking about, so get it retailed and take a wage off it!
Thanks Matt. It's £3000 car all day long! I suppose this happens when you have somebody who's 'reasonably' knowledgeable about cars (just extracting the urine) & is an honest trader! All the best.......
You have done a wonderful thing! What a lovely car and probably a future classic. Your videos inspire me to take extra special care on my 2007 Volvo V70. Keep up the good work!
Do not use car vertical!!! I bought a three report package from them off which the report did not reveal the details of damage which was easily viewed on VCheck or other hpi checking institutions. Very disappointed in Matt advertising for them with shoddy service. They refused to give me a refund. Word to the wise stay clear!
I’ve had a couple of these and a C70 (the C30 drives a lot nicer than the C70). They’re great cars and, I daily a D5 model with a genuine Polestar map which is manufacturer/warranty approved and makes a healthy 210bhp, it’s a fun little car and relatively economical. I will likely pass it onto my daughter if/when she can insure it because I’m buying an EX30 (ultra, twin motor). I can’t bring myself to sell the C30 though, I like it too much. PS, I’ve never seen one with a cover over the OBD port so don’t be alarmed by that. Oh and the brakes, I had new rear callipers on mine in October and it took several attempts to fully bleed all the air out the system, they felt a big like you describe.
that really is a top motor and you did a great job once again saving it some one will love it especially with the history that’s a keeper a sunday car ❤
A bit of an oddball this one..... A fair way from a traditional Volvo..... Looks exceptionally tidy..... It should sell readily if you do decide to move it on Matt, as it's a nice clean Volvo with a good service history......
Just bought a black 1.6D DRIVe for my daughter's first car. She loves it and just had the wheels refurbed. Much safer than a fiesta even if the insurance is astronomical 😮
Just a side note about the brakes: there is a little plastic connector that will crack and stops pressure building on the servo assist. My mechanic replaced it with a Ford part which was vastly cheaper than the Volvo one (the 1.6D engine being shared by PSA, Ford, Mazda, Mini and half the known universe) but I'm sure the braking system on the 2.4 is the same. Easy fix.
I've been driving Volvo's for 28 years. I never liked the C30 until I owned one. They drive differently to any Volvo. The build quality is good and if you know the common faults and where to buy cheap genuine Volvo parts there great. I have a T5 manual with BSR full exhaust and map. I wouldn't part with it.
I testdrove a 4 door saloon with this engine. The engine performed wonderful, but it's was a bit thirsty. This little blue thing is a modern classic in my opinion.
Great cars these. Owned a nice spec S40 of this era and driven the C30 a few times as a family member had one. Although looking a bit dated these days, definitely doesn't feel it's age to drive one. I do much prefer the revised newer shape C30, but still. You really can't go wrong with one of these as a first car, second car or simply a cheap reliable mode of transport. Performs equally well around town as it does motorway driving. This particular one is for sure one of the best examples I've seen.
Brilliant save!.. How could someone think of scrapping it? these are such a good car and basically a mk2 Focus platform underneath a much prettier body, i`m surprised they were never all that popular, it may be a gas guzzler but it`s worth every penny for that sound.. @@plunder1956 True.. Only electric cars are cheap as every where else. A Tesla Model 3 is cheaper than an Opel Astra base model with petrol engine ;)
I've always wondered what it's like being a car enthusiast in a place that isn't car-friendly (e.g. The Nordics, The Netherlands, Singapore)
What do Danish car enthusiasts commonly drive?
What a cracking little car! While I was growing up, my Dad had a number of different cars including Granadas, Range Rovers and Jaguars, but the best car he ever had in my opinion was a brand new Volvo 740GLE. My oldest brother also had a from-new 240 Torslander estate. Superb cars!
In the case of a good company, profit is the applause you get for serving your customers well. You and the rest of the High Peak team deserve all the applause in the world. Great job as ever
A friend bought a smaller engined one for his son to learn to drive in. Cheap as chips to insure and very robust, and a real coolness compared to ubiquitous corsa fiesta crew.
Matt,.... you missed something,.... you didn't check the radio to see what the previous owner was listening to. Tut, Tut🤨, great video as always, and as you say, a another nice motor saved from the scrappy. Well worth it.
One of my all time favourite coupés . Possibly very underrated and was a worthy successor to the P1800 .
Don't forget the 480
@@fastasfox ........the favourite volvo ive ever owned from 96 to 2003.............ive had about 30 volvos........my 480 was 1991 model,1.7 injection,auto,2 tone turquoise and grey leather interior and a paris blue exterior with green inserts in bumpers/side trim.......fun little runabout and beautiful shape that everyone admired.......i bought it with around 20k and sold it with 90k......traded it in for an 850 estate (loved that to)......currently own a v40 D4 (190) lux nav,R design and the driving position feels exactly like my old 480...perfect size of car for me......if i have to change it wont be for anythin electric so wont be a volvo unfortunately.
@geoffdundee They are going up in price too. I had a white 480, and the pop-up headlights appealed to my inner 10 year old 😁....I still think they look cool to this day.
@@fastasfox ...i loved the lights too and big knob to flip them up/down :) ....... very cool.........and you can open close windows with remote and turn lights on and off too......was ahead of its time with some gimmicks in it..........i bought a brand new kenwood 6 disc CD player/changer as they were new out at time (cd players) - bought 4 months before i sold the 480 so i took it out when trading it in......i still have it sitting in its original boxes for over 20 years...was hardly used so still brand new :)
its not a coupe tho its a hatchback
Hi Matt, did you fix the right-wing mirror, air-conditioning and service the gear box? The car is really unique. Hope it finds the right buyer soon! Cheers and again a good job done!
A friend of mine had one of these and traded it last year. Quote "the worst thing I've done for years"... Realised how much he'd loved it (from new) he's now trying to find it again. One of the best cars he's owned....he just wants it back.🤞 Really interesting video Matt...and a brilliant save. £2995 seems a bargain to me. Id love it, but like you I've no use for it...and anyway it's probably gone by now😉 Cheers Roj
I can see why you wanted to keep this one Matt.
For a 17 year old car, it’s in amazing condition, great video as always❤.
Alas, I will be the Volvo nerd by saying the colour of that C30 is 476 - Brilliant Blue Pearl. A very nice colour across the P1 range. Rare combo being the 2.4 petrol and an early C30 SE with lovely Mestra alloys. Ok, I'll stop now 😅
This is elite Volvo bearding. Bravo
My V50 D5 is in this colour. I love it. 230k miles now
@@JPB90 I have a Barents Blue V50 D4 currently and I love it. I wanted to find one in this colour but it's a rare colour. They really suit this colour the best 🙂
@@iainrobinson4280 thank you 🙂 I spend some of my time perusing Volvo brochures so this sticks in my mind 😂
My previous 2006 V50 had that colour but the Ford 1.8 engine didn't like E10 fuel as the engine gave up the ghost. Replaced the car for a newer V50.
Great car matt i have a 2013 Volvo c30 T5 R-Design great little car
The first car I ever owned. Was way ahead of the completion on looks back then.
Is that the same engine they use in the focus ST mark 2? Only detuned here.
@@paultasker7788 yes I’m sure it was 👍
That's a great save. A pretty rare and interesting car. If I had space for it I'd be tempted!
A really good honest car and testament to the previous owners. Great rescue.
I can't be the only person that goes straight to Auto trader every time I watch one of these reviews ?!?!
A great looking colour. I'm glad you rescued this. Way too nice to scrap. Sounds lovely too. Shame you couldn't keep it, but at least it's saved.
Really underrated cars a lot of car for the money. Same with many other Volvos!
Good little cars the c30,was never a fan of the glass but at the end of the day another car saved from the scrap. Superb job Matt!
A beautiful little car, I really like it and if I was in the market for a new car, I’d be on the phone without delay. Nice job, well done!
Maybe one day 🤔
Would love to see some videos where your mechanics are working there magic on the cars you buy. All the best.
Good idea..the back room boys and girls too I believe 😊
When I was on the line at Fords Dagenham we did Volvo engines.
It was the 480 in the 80's, the turbo version was a really nice car!
Happy to see this video as a proud owner of one
Not to mention the replacement of the front grill, which I gather is factory anyways? Seems to go with the black trim elsewhere on the car
He mentions gearbox service on a few cars and doesn't always bother to do them....
@@chris3490 not if you use steam or a heat gun
That’s aged so well. Looks great. Great video Matt
This was one of the best cars I have ever owned , r design version. Was super cheap to run and insure. The look was something special and when the red body work was buffed up it really looked special. Loved the drive too.
Nice one Matt. Nice looking car, just a bit thirsty and expensive tax. Can't believe someone would want to scrap it though.
Belting old girl! Always liked the styling of the C30, and the chassis is sport enough, without ruining the ride comfort. I was worriwd that you would persuade yourself to keep it mind. Definitely got enough old cars kicking about, so get it retailed and take a wage off it!
Still can't get over how good this turned out!
Thanks Matt. It's £3000 car all day long! I suppose this happens when you have somebody who's 'reasonably' knowledgeable about cars (just extracting the urine) & is an honest trader! All the best.......
You do brilliant with these videos not only is it good content, you save cars from the graveyard too.. keep it up …
I have recently bought a C70 with the same engine and box, absolutely love it!!!!
Word to the wise stay clear!
other 'channels' that rebuild wrecked cars also promote CV, then openly tell you proudly the car they're doing isnt on the hit list... waste of money
They won't give me a refund either
Had a few 480’s, the forerunner to the C30. Love Volvo’s for their understated coolness!
I wil miss my old 480 until the day I die.
Hopefully, it will be a future classic if Chairman Starmer lets us have a future. Nice car Matt lovely condition and well worth saving.
Looks a good car Matt. Nice 👍after a good detailing and full valet there’s a little Gem there! Great engine with torque converter, sweet 👌
when you said big petrol i was picturing a T5! never realised they actually did a 2.4 non turbo on these
Still looks good
Was waiting for this one! I own a C30 1.6L, absolutely love it. Nice interior, looks great and pulls really well for such a small engine.
Great video about a fantastic car! I've always rather admired these, but never seen one in this colour! Glad you saved it! 😊
Very nice looking motor there Matt - Glad it got the High Peak Auto rescue service, definitely too good to scrap.
Saw the ad for this and it looks good. The interior looks spotless now that the seat has been repaired
It's what puts me off. The insurance is more than the car.
Easy fix.
@@anterovipunen666for sure, car was £1300 and insurance in her name £3300. Rip off Britain at its finest 🤬
I'm pleased iv got these videos for my bedtime watching 😂 keep em coming matt 👍
The video I’ve always been waiting for !!
That is the rarest engine too 😮
I've been driving Volvo's for 28 years. I never liked the C30 until I owned one. They drive differently to any Volvo. The build quality is good and if you know the common faults and where to buy cheap genuine Volvo parts there great. I have a T5 manual with BSR full exhaust and map. I wouldn't part with it.
These cars have a big following with the younger folk due to how many 1.6 there are. More desirable than you think.
I testdrove a 4 door saloon with this engine. The engine performed wonderful, but it's was a bit thirsty. This little blue thing is a modern classic in my opinion.
You'll keep it coz it's a great little car, love mine & yours will be more in demand with that engine. Bargain price.
Had the t5 version, great wee quick, quiet, and really comfy car. Liked it so much we replaced it with the t5 awd v50 of the same platform.
I`d be very tempted to keep it for myself..
Lovely old bus and my first car was a Volvo 343 and I have extremely good and fond memories of them wonderful old lady..😅
Uber cool car, what a great service you've done saving this one, on my wish list along with a BMW estate for taking the husky out and I think I'm sorted
