I can't be the only one who's genuinely glad when Matt lands himself a cared for car, that just needs someone like him get back on the road for years to come! Well done!
Great video! 👍
£113 to fill the tank, how many miles range will that give you?
Matt's upper body workout plan - drive Freelander around for 3 months without fixing steering issues - BEEFCAKE!
People forget this one simple lifehack.
TD4_e just means it's an early stop/start vehicle before it became standard. The 2WD vehicles came later and were badged eD4, just to confuse things!
I am probably never going to own a land rover, but these wild cars facts are pure gold :D
Quite right old chap, I was about to jump on this!
Probably why the alternator was kaput stop start doesn't do them any favours
"A good strong solid box", I got married on a promise of that!!
Great video again Matt 👍
Oi oi Saveloy😂
“ few careful drivers - service history “? 😂
"something's rubbing on something that's not quite right, there".
"It might be the rack". 😁

Even for 2.7k, this is a lot of car. You have the brilliant Land Rover Terrain Response System and very good equipment being the HSE. To be fair, this Land Rover is more capable and intriguing than probably 90% of the crossovers/small SUVs that are available nowadays. Have fun with it!
Just sold my fl2 last October , the 3rd one we have had over 14 years. These are superb cars.
A lovely driving car.
Morning Matt. I learned 35 years ago when i was a service engineer, that never discount a fault with a brand new part. Id replaced said part a week earlier, and the fault pointed to this part again. I was convinced it wasn't said part because it was new. You know whats next, it was. Love the channel, cheers, Hugo.
Got off light ! first repair bill on mine was £2870 ( clutch and flywheel wrongly fitted took out the gearbox) three years later I have reached the dizzy heights of £7600 on repairs (you name it it has been replaced) still going into safe mode when passing by the swimming pool in a nearby village ( funny enough never anywhere else) now I have the joy of watching it turn to rust still the local garage does a mean weld job for MOT purposes It's become a personal thing between us now ! on the up side it can tow a ring of concrete blocks ( just over 1 Ton) across fields no problem if it wasn't for that I would dig a hole and bury it, and then of course buy the Honda I should have bought !.
Old lady at the bus stop was like “There goes the massively overspending man” 😅
i got a td4 in Australia 10y with no problem, The light bulb wasn't working once,& main driving shaft was replaced, no rust.....rather than that, it is still running like a charm!! 180.000 km
The reason why the replacement pump failed is due to the steering rack seals breaking down causing the dirty fluid if the rack isnt changed the new pump will also fail very soon then eventually the rack itself will give up
ANother money pit thats why the second values are so low
Yes, mine went through the same under warranty. New rack reqd.
I was lucky so also had the DMF failure and the rear diff failure. Full house of FL2 known faults. I am however already thinking of buying it from you. Yes LR addict.
The issue itself is likely to be the filter in the reservoir, no doubt no one replaced the reservoir, and hence the dirty filter has starved the new pump...
Issue across Mondeo platform cars which use it - Volvos too, I had the issue on a V70 Mk3 (P3), new reservoir instantly sorted it.
Is this the one that has the transfer box problem If it is ull wished it was 2wd !!!
Second this, same as the mondeo mk4. Seals break down in the steering rack, blocks the filter in the resiviour, then starves the pump of fluid. All 3 need replacing, or you'll be in the same boat before you know it.
Thing is of you have 3grand in that done its still usable transport thats spot on
It's also still worth 5k.
@@ckm-mkc100% I've been looking for a new car and if this popped up on autotrader sub 100k mikes I'd assume £5k minimum. The age, the spec.
I always knew you would keep this one, from the moment you saw it! Such an underrated car the Freelander 2!
the racks are full off swarf from a fault with the cleaning practise at the factory. the swarf clogs the filter on the reservoir and hydraulic lines on the rack and the pressure from lack of flow damages the pump
Had to replace the rack on two Fl2s due to this internal failure.
Would like to see a "weekend property" series!!
Has he massively overspent ? Can he fix it with a £500 budget ? Let’s find out…
Not forgetting Putting new plates on it and checking the cambelt
TRT and HSE protocol
No
@@Yorkshiremadmick and a buff of the headlights....
😂😂😂😂❤ this should be his click bait for his loyal fans
Right decision Matt, you have a great vehicle which will suit your weekend retreat, and power steering issue aside (once rectified), you know the resale would still bring some profit. You saved another vehicle from being sold as spares.
Buying a cottage in Wales is taking 'massively overspent' to a new level
Love my 2010 Freelander2 HSE with cream leather interior such a smooth drive and all the family love it. You were lucky to find one with the cream interior in such good nick! And not surprised you kept it! Hope you get the steering issue sorted ok 👍
Couldn't agree more!
I bought one about 7 months ago, ex London car, HSE 2013, auto, full history and immaculate, right away spent over 1k on a full service to include all filters oils haldex, diff, gearbox, timing belt etc. Love the car, surprisingly capable off road, not that mine has been any further than crossing the odd field. Boot is a little on the small side is my only niggle.
I bought a 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 because of your recommendation. I've had it a year now and it's been faultlessly perfect in all weather, I live on an island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, great car love it, the heated steering wheel especially! 🤣
I’ve got one. A 2013 Dynamic. I’ve owned 30 cars (mix of private and company) and my FL2 is the best of the lot.
I love how it looks inside and out. It’s comfortable. Economical enough and incredibly flexible at everything I throw at it.
It’s a car with terrific soul.
Great video Matt.
Mate the power steering issues on these is generally the filter in the fluid reservoir. Change the reservoir and flush the system and it’ll be sound. No need to replace the pump. You’ll save a fortune.
Lovely plan with the car. I hope you'll give us a tour of your country house too. Sounds like a nice location!
PS: Also this house that you mentioned sounds to me that can house a big garage. let's say for someone who wants to store some nice cars :D
Cheers, Matt! Great job!
Sure he’s going to fit in seamlessly either the locals .. on the strength of his number plates 😃
Ps they just LOVE the British buying up their cottages for “ weekend retreats” - will be assured a warm welcome 😯
A 200 year old, 2 bedroom miner's cottage is not going to be big or have a garage.
@@maninthestreet01 I didn't mean it already has the garage as I don't know anything about the property, but I'm thinking it can be built or extended if one wants and has the space.
Good morning Matt, excellent video. Well done on getting the cottage. Lots of interesting comments on the steering rack issues. Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged
Matt, I have a 1928 Humber 9/28 for sale, just £10,000. Its in appalling condition but nothing that a good buff wouldn’t sort out, its impossible to drive safely , has no synchromesh on any gears, a cracked block, goes up to 50 mph downhill with the wind behind you, with an auto vac fuel delivery that gives up when you go up hills. The accelerator is where the brake should be and vice versa and in any case the brakes only work on the prop shaft so you need to operate the hand brake which work on the rod operated rear brake drums. Expect to stop in an emergency within 3 miles. The (aftermarket) indicators don’t work unless the magneto is on but if you leave the magneto on then the electronics (three wires) will burn out leaving you in a wooden inferno vehicle. What could possibly go wrong? But a good buffing and your £500 budget (plus new “high peak” number plates) will make everything wonderful. Look forward to your purchase (and video) shortly.
A very quick and straightforward turnaround Boyo !! 😁
The parents bought one of these new in 2011, it was a S spec in white, quite utilitarian but to me that kind of suited the car. It was also the only car which could get up their steep street in the snow. They only kept it a few years as they were concerned about long term reliability, maybe that’s not a big issue…
"I bought a cheap..." lol, it never is in the end, but we already know that from the start. Love the fact you put solid motors back on the road that deserve a second chance. Matt, you are someone that is truly eco friendly and recycling is the best way to get towards net zero (which isn't really possible as we are carbon life forms that breathe lol). All the best, keep up the good work.
Lad I don’t even drive, but am addicted to your videos, and that old bus deserves your attention.
Guarantee you need a new power steering rack these freelander 2s are renowned for it. You really should change all the pipes are they will partially clogged up. Don't be surprised if you have to replace the pump and reservoir again, as that's what happen to the pump from 5k ago it gets filthy from the rack which is the original problem. The black power steering fluid is actually burnt fluid
G'day from WA. That was a sweet video! Although it cost more than you thought - all's well that ends well! A lovely car, that needs to be driven (not just sat in), and is a great fit for a transport need! And the fact that is is a Welsh car coming home is poetic! Lovely jubbly!
My 2007 is still rolling. Great cars if you look after them. Workhorse
My 2007 launch hse is mechanically mint so far 2yrs, done 11k, has 131,000 on it.
@@lawncare-4u849 just passed 140000. Had a few issues over the years but nothing major.
$1187.34, that's cheap.
Called the LR2 from 2008-2015 here in the states.
The had an awesome Tambora flame orange, which I love, I love orange.
I don't believe we got a diesel in the states, we got the 3.2 instead.
I have that launch orange 2007 hse auto 😁😁
uh, yeahhh, of course we didn't get the diesel just like we almost never got diesels here, namely no 4 cyl diesels almost ever, so sadly. And the 3.2 isn't the durable engine that many seem to think it is, always needs timing chain at some point which is very spendy, plus the '10-'12 engines were defective in large numbers (with multiple TSB's explaining it all, .
My 2008 lr2 Hse was totaled last year. Sold truck but when thinks go wrong it’s expensive very expensive
I enjoyed that review. Excellent insight into buying a car. Cars are not as well maintained here in Ireland, roads are not as good, they cost way more, insurance is way too high, road tax is too high, maintenance cost is ridiculous which is why cars are not as well maintained and fuel costs are high. It appears we only exist to keep a car on the road. And the government tell you to watch out for scams?😮
Matt, you are the salt of the earth mate. One of the most likeable guys on the planet. I wish we had more dealers like you in the North of Ireland.
Thanks. Very kind
@@HighPeakAutosfreelander 1 not so good but freelander 2 is alot better 👍
Donegal?
Thats a cracking car for less than £3000 🤷♂️👍👍
Gear gaiter. Just pop the trim off.
"You should feel it clip into the housing".
I knew as soon as you opened those doors on it it was going to be a good example and we were right. Going to be a fantastic car for you to use
24:33 I like that you show us the fault with the steering, did your mechanic figure out what was wrong with it yet?
If the fluid in the power steering was as black as you said I think there may be a problem with failure of the power steering rack seals so you may well be having a new rack soon
I had power steering put new pump on and no difference changed oil and reservoir as it has a filter in it that you can’t change
Yes, yes!! I am glad you decided to have some more time off work and have a proper rest 🙂 Hope you will enjoy your new property 🥰
I hope so too!
I think you made the right decision by keeping it. I own a 08 reg Freelander 2 hse auto in caspian blue. I had have 2 freelander 2, one freelander 1 and a Discovery 2 w reg. You must buy high spec with landrovers but i love them. i hope you have many happy hours driving it.
Why must you buy high spec please? Thanks.
Matt congrats on the Cottage, the Freelander will be great for that use.
Great video and work as always! :D
The e is the stop start version. It was only on the manual freelander. Just sold my freelander HSE lux after 10 year's ownership for the flagship mazda.... I hope it's as reliable as the Land Rover was.
It's strange that any brand will fit start/stop technology to a car with a manual transmission, usually It's attached to cars with an automatic transmission.
Any rust under the arches ? Those horrible rubber strips catch all of the crap, so take the off. As the car is black Hammerite Waxoil is a great thick product to paint under the arches & the colour will blend in .
So somebody has looked after the car, kept all the services up to date, taken pride in it…….then got absolutely shafted at a main dealer with the trade in 🤦🏻♂️
They don’t have to accept the trade price, they can sell privately.
But had knackered steering 🤔🙈
Hi Matt...not read all the comments but they had a fault with the steering rack.Usually if there is a notchy feeling on lock its that.Loads of FL2's out there with this.LR should have done a recall.Still great value though.
I had my accessory belt snap on my FL2 and steering that car without power steering is an absolute mission
As the graffiti always said in the 80s:
"Come home to a real fire - buy a holiday cottage in Wales"
The power steering reservoir is also the filter ..usually
Great video HPA,nice car Matt, glad it's a keeper for you,you deserve it,and your cottage in Wales, you work really hard, hope you enjoy it👍👌😀
Thanks 👍
Hi Matt, you may have over spent but it's still pretty cheap, I actually had one of these as a company car a few years. As for the power steering problem I bet it's the rack have fun with it in Wales cheers Phil from Newark ago..
Another great video - thanks Matt.
Please tell me we are going to see the holiday cottage ?
Love the property channel as well.
most probably the rack - I had mine changed at 62k - JLR contributed 100% as it was only 4 years old (I was amazed!)
We bought a 2010 Freelander 2 earlier this year partly on the strength of your previous reviews and it's been a great car so far. Ours has the auto box and doesn't have the sunroofs, otherwise it's a very similar spec. Paid a bit more than that for it though!
Hello Again. Yes matt its a great idea to keep the Freelander for the Welsh house, main reason is the roads around Wales are narrow so expect a good few expensive scraches. Regards, RichardA.
Welcome to Freelander 2 ownership! Some nice lanes in Wales for you to play on.
yes 20 mph vrrm vrrm !
Probably quicker to use the green lanes than the actual roads!
Congratulations on your new home in Wales. Can't wait to see it on the channel.
For what it is, it still looks good value imo. Go you for having more to you time, you certainly deserve it 🙂
Great idea. I live on the Welsh border in Chester, so have easy access to North Wales. It's a beaut!
I bought one, almost the same spec, except for black interior. It spent so long in the dealership having faults rectified, that I sold it back to them.
It's still a bargain car despite the overspend. The clutch was the really pricey job on mine
Glad you bought something that isn't scrap!
As you are coming to Wales welcome to the 20 mph speed limit 😂😂😂😂
That is one lovely (and now sorted) car for less that £3k - all the car most of us would ever need. Plenty of bells, whistles and luxury touches too! Ace!
It’s refreshing to see someone has looked after a nice car so well. Once you get the power steering you should have a really nice little motor for your new weekender in Wales.
By the way, are you planning a video on said weekender on your real estate chsnnel? It would be interesting to see.
Thanks for another great presentation Matt.
Hi matt at least it had decent tires put on each corner glad you managed to get it back up and running after the second trip to your mechanics the freelander will look at home in Wales hope you are well best wishes ian
You cant beat a good old buff
I love the way you find an excuse to add another JLR car to your collection.
The only cottage in Wales with number plate cladding...
He has buffed the windows as well
I really want one of these. Please tell me it isn't a disaster
You’ve got a good one there Matt, even with the obligatory over spend, this has made a very good example, especially with all of its history.
Being a fanatic of the Škoda marque, I can fully appreciate your passion for JLR products, if I were a Škoda retailer, I would find it hard to actually sell any of them.
Even before you mentioned it, I somehow just knew you were going to keep this one❤.
That last few seconds with the power steering, we've all been there before retrieving something that hasn't been fixed properly. It's not a happy feeling.
The exact same make, model and engine starts at 7500€ and goes all the way up to 13000€ at my neck of the woods .. if only there was a decent and economical way to shift the controls to the left, I'd come buy my cars from the UK.
Is your obsession with licenses plates a British thing? It seems entirely inconsequential, yet you bring it up as (usually) the first point in most videos.
The letters in the reg plate tell us where the car was registered in uk. Its not something I've ever bothered about and I couldn't tell an Aberdeen car from a Bristol one.
I do notice the codes on fishing boats though, which use a similar system. They adopt letters from whichever port they are based....eg OB is Oban etc.
We are very interesting people, aren't we?
If a car doesn’t have matching plates it’s a sign it could have been in an impact. Also adding aftermarket matching plates can tell you a lot about the type of person the previous owner was.
You can tell a lot about a car in the UK from the reg plate if you know what you’re looking for - where it’s from and also the age. I think we’d be better served with a set of random numbers and letters (or perhaps with one letter for the region), and no age identifier. I never understood why people need to know how old your car is - none of their bloody business!
You are also not allowed to privatise your plate in any way you want which is also mental - if one’s got the money and wants to spend it, then why can one not have ‘bell end’ as one’s reg?
Great idea, Matt. Wales is beautiful and can be a lovely place to relax.
However, being a native of the Land Of My Fathers, I strongly suggest you invest in some sturdy, high quality wet weather gear. The reason I didn't relocate back to Wales when I had the chance was the persistent rain (I moved to the Waveney Valley in East Anglia, which is the driest area in the UK!).
Freelander 2s do seem to have a good reputation with people like yourself who are "in the know".
Great car! And well worth maintaining. Now done and sorted, so enjoy!
Cheers.
Great idea for a shortish term project. Very good to have Welsh plates. We went on holiday there with English plates and every wing ended up scratched/keyed. Never been back, happy to spend money where it is wanted. Great video, Matt, good luck with the project, but rest assured, the house will cost you less to run than the JLR product.
wow really sorry to hear of the racist attack on your car .
Those of us of a certain vintage were taught not to turn the wheel unless the car was moving: power steering is for wimps! Seriously though I would miss power steering, shame you’ve had so much trouble. Great video ❤
I think with mine and Mats clever detective skills, given the clues of the service sticker, service history, chrome side steps, RNLI sticker, poppy, tan leather interior and actual proper good tyres and no privacy glass this car has been owned by a mature and sensible person.
A nice good clean, new tyres, a fresh set of reg plates, a fresh service and a bit of tidying the odd marks and scratches and buff out any dents, and it should be good to go for £5,955.
(They are £6,250-£6,995 on auto trader) 🙂
There's that legendary build quality.
Literally in every car if the steering is the problem it rarely hold stitches.
Great video Matt.
I tried to get my parents to replace their old FL1 with a 2 but they insisted they didnt want another land rover as they'd read all the horror stories of Range rovers costing a fortune to repair so they bought a BMW X3 and have had no end of problems with it luckily the major one was sorted under warranty which was it snapped an inner cv and smashed the gearbox casing (repair bill of over £7000 on an £11k car) Dad finally admitted that they should have got another Freelander as the 1 that they had was faultless apart from the standard failed window regs for the 10 years they owned it until it was written off by a Waitrose delivery van
Probably the only LR I would take a chance on here in the states, because it's basically a Volvo XC60. In fact it's very fun to pay attention to all the Volvo DNA that shows up in these cars. It's also why they can last a good deal longer than you might expect from a JLR product, at least with the 3.2 Volvo engine. But the electronics would scare me, and there are still plenty of bespoke JLR parts that wouldn't inspire much confidence ... and yet if they had put the T6 Volvo engine in it, I just might have one.
I had no idea Ronan Keating did car reviews! Bravo!
But love your videos Matt… keep it up mate!
My dad had the same spec with a champagne / beige exterior, never seen this color again on the roads
Did my very first CarVertical check today. Using your code. Thankfully no issues with my prospective purchase. My mum had a Freelander of this ilk, recall it being a fairly decent car.
High peak made a nice profit
Nice Freelander, had several, great cars. They don't like having unevenly worn tyres though, the new tyre will put strain on the transmission as the rolling circumference is different. Best to change the other 3 otherwise you will be looking at another diff and Haldex.
I was told this by tyre mechanics.
Excellent decision to keep it for the getaway house, esp.being 4wheel drive. It's well worth it, and looks gorgeous, too.
You can't beat an old miners cottage. My sister and her partner live in one in Cornwall and it's over ninety years old and it's so quaint and so beautiful and so quiet because it's just them and another couple next door. The only downside is you have to drive down an unmade up road to get to it that plays havoc with your suspension which in a hire car each time can be worrisome. On the plus side though lighting the log burner at night in the winter is just the best thing ever.
Sounds lovely. Can’t wait
That ssangong korando you sold would have been a better runner for Wales. That wasn't full of faults like this freelander plop
Perfect ending! Despite the high spend it was too good to see heading to the scrap yard!!
At least there's not another random cheap Chinese tyre brand.
Word of warning, 2nd home owners in Wales from April this year pay double Council Tax, plans have been put forward by some Welsh Councils including Conway to triple Council Tax next April.
I know this already. You also have to pay a higher rate of stamp duty etc. Hasn't put me off.
Yeh right, a Weekend retreat, just go there chillout. I thought that once. Now I have an office in my house by the sea. I constantly remind myself of the means I had to buy it in the first place. Life's a beach!
Love that!
I live in the Highlands and I have a FL2 and my LR garage ( not main dealer!) Loves them, always says the best LR. Mine has done 140,000....wouldn't part with it. Nothing else on the road comes close to its practicality.
There's just something very right about an old Land Rover parked outside a 200 year old stone cottage. It's a perfect home.
