Generation Kill is an American seven-part television miniseries produced for HBO that aired from July 13 to August 24, 2008. It is based on Evan Wright's 2004 book Generation Kill, about his experience as an embedded reporter with the US Marine Corps' 1st Reconnaissance Battalion during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and was adapted for television by David Simon, Ed Burns, and Wright. The miniseries was directed by Susanna White and Simon Cellan Jones and produced by Andrea Calderwood. The ensemble cast includes Alexander Skarsgård as Sergeant Brad "Iceman" Colbert, Jon Huertas as Sergeant Tony "Poke" Espera, James Ransone as Corporal Josh Ray Person, and Lee Tergesen as Wright.

Additionally, the loss can affect the morale of the unit, as the R.T.O is often a key member in ensuring operational efficiency and safety. Immediate measures would need to be taken to reestablish communication lines, either by reassigning personnel or using backup systems, to restore operational integrity.

Actually this whole scene is really about how Fick put his ass on the line for the guys in Colbert’s squad. The leadership is all kinds of fucked up in this show, but Fick is one of the good ones and it’s shown here.
Lt. Fick was like one of only five goddamn adults in the whole battalion.

Godfather and Chaos were 2 examples of great leadership, in a group of adhorently bad leadership. Though if you actually look into the 3 lts we're looked at pretty evenly across the board. Fick is portrayed as the bright light, but you cant blame Evan for that, fick took care of him, and being biased towards a friend is not uncommon at all.
@@michag4337I wouldn’t go that far. Godfather wasn’t really much better about glorywhoring than anyone else. The airfield raid was a perfect example of that. He, like many in the invasion, not just officers, were trying to make the most out of what was going to be a short war and to that end manufactured engagements. For lower ranks it’s claiming you took fire to get a CIB, for the upper echelons it’s creating needless operations just to get your unit into some action.

Back in the day, an LT who was the type to throw them in the chipper... They'd often get fragged.
COs are much better these days. They actually listen to experience. At least, they did when I was in.

The non verbal communication between godfather and Lt fick shows how true a leader both men are. It takes guts to communicate that these are my men, and I am dealing with it at my level.

I'll put it this way; sometimes radical honesty starts the gears turning an bureaucracy that will ultimately result in too harsh a punishment and actually make his (Fick's) AND Godfather's jobs harder.
Had Fick actually said the words, Godfather would have been forced to Article 15 (at least) a lot of Marines. Too harsh a punishment for something that was ultimately corrected "internally."
Fick technically didn't tell the truth, but it's not like Godfather didn't already know the truth. Fick accepted responsibility, as in he "vouched" for his platoon, that it wouldn't happen again.
This satisfied the issue without having to get bigger forces involved. You think Godfather wanted to be out an entire platoon? Or even a single squad for something so bullshit?
Oh; and the obligatory "tell me x without telling me x": tell me you never served without telling me you never served. So what makes you think you have the experience to draw from?

Godfather knew it was all BS from Fick 😂 but all that mattered was that Ray was still able to fight and wouldn’t be a hindrance to the upcoming operation. He just had to address it in a professional manner. Respect for both Officers here.

This show did a great job exposing how some leaders are excellent and will go to bat for their Marines, while others put the lives of their subordinates in danger due to their egos and incompetance. Fick was damn good.

Well considering he tried to stop his captain calling danger close fire mission on his own men id say so. What made that part funnier was the captain in question not only didnt know what danger close meant but was using the wrong codes. Even the radio guy said to alpha "your mission is approved as your codes are correct"

@@arctic4299 I found it highly entertaining, the acting is great, it focuses on a less talked about time in history, the story is based around a reporters experiences whilst embedded in a marine battalion so it’s quite authentic, and it doesn’t shy away from anything that happened; friendly fire, civilians suffering the most, incompetent leadership, the effects of war on the soldiers etc. Equally you get a lot of laughter and camaraderie from the marines, so the show strikes a good balance

this is how officers are supposed act in conjunction with their NCO's. The CO and company NCO does not need to know the details. The mistake happened and associated soldiers were disciplined. In the Navy, I was lucky to have two weapons officers and a great Master Chief which provided this type of cover for their divisions. There are somethings the CO does not need to know.
This would be a battalion commander not a company commander.
I saw it as Godfather being able to smell the BS but he just didn’t want to make a big deal of it before their upcoming operation. He had a lot on his plate already, so dealing with an NJP before their push in country was something that he just didn’t want to deal with as much as them. Telling LT Fick to “consider writing some of these men up for commendation” was just him being sarcastic and was actually saying to make sure these men are squared away. He was never actually gonna give any of them commendations over this.
I think there were hidden layers to it because Godfather has been in LT Fick’s boots before when he was a PL and he knows damn well that these Marines were probably up to no good, but he also knows it would hurt more to push into the matter so he gives them a warning.
The CO was 100% absolutely aware of what was going on though.
@@Shade01982 Depends on the CO, I had one CO which did not care so long as the job was getting done and we made him look good. My last CO was clueless, and he assumed things were being done correctly even though his Chiefs quarters and most of the command staff were not really following his orders to the tee.
I like how they captured the gaze and body language of higher ups.
A cook was injured lighting a burner for the field kitchen. It was already over a 100 degrees outside and at the time the burners used kerosene. The cook had to go to the hospital but was okay after a week or so. Not long after the burners were switched to using JP8.
What did the outside temp have to do with it?

@@ThatSBthe kerosene fuel has a boiling point not much higher than that. (and it may have been hotter still inside the tent). The stoves were fueled with kerosene because it was expected to be used in cold climates. Thus switching to the JP8 a heavier fuel oil less likely to produce explosive fumes.

One of the best pieces of advice I got from someone when I was put in charge of other people was "you are now a shit umbrella." Handle it internally, for sure, but protect them from the bullshit of beaurocracy.

Unfortunately that's what a lot of people who are supposed to be leaders fail at. They're just looking for their next promotion. They don't realize that their subordinates are really the ones who can make or break your next promotion.

Hitman’s CO, the Captain (whose name escapes other than his nickname Encino Man) was really an incompetent leader. So many times he led his men to the point he was about to have a death count. Thank God for Fick and Gunney. Those two kept Hitman sane.

I feel like there’s also a message of respect from one leader to another in seeing the younger leader be willing to cover for his men (or at least be willing to get shit on beside them). That unspoken virtue of a leader is something Godfather approves of and wants to foster

Good leaders realize NJP is a tool for maintaining good order and discipline. Ensuring troop welfare and mission accomplishment. If NJP your Marines is going to degrade that then you don’t use it. Good leaders know that. There are other ways to handle that in house to get your point across. Fick was a great example of this and understood his Marines came first so his unit could effectively perform their duties and accomplish their mission. The CO knew this as well that the commanders and leaders closer to the Marines will know what is more effective for achieving that.
That LT was the real hero of the series.
The last quip about accomodations was his backhand saying, "this one's free, next ones not"

I served in Germany in 1982 after I’ve been given permission to train with rangers in Spain on a number of weekends I ended up getting seriously injured on a number of parachute jumps out of a C130 I believe it was a C-130 breaking my leg, fractured my hip in about another 10 different bones. All hell broke loose when I was unexpectedly told her everything I did was not correct and was technically without permission two months later I was awarded a medal. My commander was awarded a medal and everybody involved was giving an award. This absolutely happens constantly.
Seriously injured on a "number" of jumps??? Perhaps you were doing it wrong. Were you airborne qualified? Perhaps you were jumping in the mountains. Everyone knows that the Rangers in Spain drop mainly in the Plain....

@@rustyjohnson9558 No, we were jumping or as I was saying low altitude jump about 2000 feet unfortunately we jumped in the area we shouldn’t have jumped and I hit a tree. It was my last jump in the military. We should’ve been jumping at 5000 feet.

No godfather was borderline incompetent. He was unable to see the incompetency of those under him because he shared the same incompetence. And the last episode and the last scene when the rolling Stone reporter is talking to him he says that he always believes his officers because he has to. We also seem to make bad judgment calls and thinking that lieutenant fick is a bad leader when he was the best leader in that unit. And he also thought "captain America" was an outstanding leader.

Just a reminder that Lt Fick had already operated in Afghanistan so although he’s an Lt he knew the proper USMC way to handle a situation and not burn any of his men.
Had a guy in BCT somehow get a practice frag into the barracks, and was looking into the hole at the bottom of the body when it went off. He claimed it 'just' fell apart. Not sure how you can miss the pin coming out, the safety clip that you literally have to physically remove, and the lever flying off. Either way he ended up with powder burns and metal fragments in his face and eyes getting transported to the hospital. I'm sure the DSs loved the CID investigation the next day.
My favourite game to play when watching this series is “what did and didn’t Godfather know?”
I feel like the boldness to lie directly to his CO’s face to protect one of his men lowkey made him proud.

This scene actually foreshadowed what happened in the end to the other team leader/1stSgt(?) that was under Captain America. There was a fvck up by Lt. C. America but his Sgt. got the blame and even though God father knows it he can't admit/address it because not only it would put his entire Battalion under investigation where they'll get suspended to conduct further operations it would also put the Marines to shame. Great series ❤

Current RTO of almost 2 1/2 years in the army, and I can tell you it's not an easy job because you won't know everything, unlike it, fellow, mos 25U. Rto is very, very important and also quite dangerous in certain situations

The military doesn't care about the fuck up as long as you can word it in a way that make everyone look good.
For example, we didn't flip a car. We had to take action to prevent an accident and in the course of action and quick thinking of the troops, no life were lost.
