The French were executed because Turkish Sultan Bayezid learned about the French massacre of Turkish prisoners from Oryahovo. Approximately 3000 Turks and other Ottoman subjects were slain by the French, despite surrendering to Sigismund on the terms that they would not be harmed. Sigismund himself was irritated by the dishonourable behaviour of the French. Once Bayezid got hold of the fate of the Oryahovo residents (likely from Hungarian/Wallachian prisoners), he ordered the French knights to be undressed to dishonour them. He had each knight tied to another knight, and had them march naked in rows of two. Each row was executed swiftly by decapitation once they reached the executioners.
