I like how this song is deceptively upbeat while covering the subject of depression. It reflects the irony of feeling down and out of place in society, but having to pretend everything’s ok at the same time.

“I just made you say underwear”, one of the great lines in pop music.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 2 года назад +19

That was really a gutsy lyric, but I agree it worked great. I tried it on my wife and she didn't fall for it. She just replied with one of my oft used lines: "I have no idea what you're talking about."

    • @LC-ht7sg
      @LC-ht7sg 2 года назад +12

Just a joke from childhood. Good he used it but not one of the great lines in music.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 2 года назад +22

@@LC-ht7sg It's not just the line, but also how well it works in the context of the song and the BNL personae. It was really gutsy to put such a trite, juvenile, corny line into a song destined for the top 40. In Beatles parlance it was "cheeky." When you hear the line you admire the courage of the song writer and it also fits with the image of the BNL as a borderline novelty act. The fact that the song made it to the top 40 only solidifies your admiration. On top of that, the line works well with the footloose and fancy free world the rest of the lyric has built. All of that combines to make it a great line, in addition to the funny, whimsical face value. An analogy would be Andy Warhol making a high profile work of art out of soup cans. The soup can itself has limited value, but when placed in the context of Andy's ouvre and placed in an art show, it becomes something more, and made Andy a star.

"Pinch Me" was, I think, the last song to be written for the record. I wrote it up on the third floor of my house, just feeling a bit melancholy; sometimes you look around, and things are great, and you just kind of feel down, and there's no reason for you to - you have an inability to appreciate your surroundings sometimes. That's what I was trying to get at, some of the boredom of pristine suburbia and the potential lying under every yawn.
I had a basic framework in mind, but couldn't finish it off, really. It was a hard one to write, because of the sort of quick singing/rapping; I was so scared people were gonna go, "Oh, it's like 'One Week,'" which it isn't. But I was so paranoid people would think that that I almost didn't write it. ---Ed Robertson

It's the perfect time of year
    Somewhere far away from here
I feel fine enough, I guess
    Considering everything's a mess
There's a restaurant down the street
Where hungry people like to eat
I could walk but I'll just drive
It's colder than it looks outside
Like a dream you try to remember but it's gone
(Pinch me) Then you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn
(I'm still asleep) When you try to see the world, beyond your front door
(Please God) Take your time, is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
(Tell me) When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
(I'm still asleep) Just to try to figure out what all this is for
It's the perfect time of day
To throw all your cares away
Put the sprinkler on the lawn
And run through with my gym shorts on
Take a drink right from the hose
And change into some dryer clothes
Climb the stairs up to my room
    Sleep away the afternoon
Like a dream you try to remember but it's gone
(Pinch me) Then you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn
(I'm still asleep) When you try to see the world, beyond your front door
(Please God) Take your time, is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
(Tell me) When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
(I'm still asleep) Just to try to figure out what all this is for
*Pinch me, pinch me, cause I'm still asleep*
*Please God tell me that I'm still asleep
*On an evening such as this*
*It's hard to tell if I exist*
If I pack the car and leave this town
Who'll notice that I'm not around
I could hide out under there
I just made you say "underwear"
I could leave but I'll just stay

Man IT was such a blessing to wake up in the 90s and listen to one of the greatest periods of great music. The nostalgia is real, I tear up whenever I catch o. of those songs on radio, then I go to RUclips and put it repeat all day. Nothing but pure excellence! !

Great song, then and now. The 90s were the best - not because the decade ignored pain or suffering, but because it was dealt with in more mature, nuanced, and intelligent ways. It's all laid bare today thanks to social media and changing cultural norms, and it's brutal.

Years ago, around the time of Pinch Me's release, I saw lead singer/guitarist Ed Robertson interviewed. I remember him talking about the song in cautionary terms, something about how the promise and potential of your life can easily slip away from you if you can't get yourself out of your room.
He was right; the bouncy, feel-good tempo notwithstanding you can't look at this video without thinking of the Henry David Thoreau quote: "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."

Even on Christmas Eve, my parents say come on over but never do. I’m avoiding the best people in my life thinking I have it set. I am in quiet desperation at age 21. Doesn’t want sex but the more fetish side, nothing crazy and I say I’m all alone, addicted to video gaming at the age of 5. But I choose solitary and now I’m empty

Dr. Pain well then dude, I know this is late, but you know the problem. Time to fix those problems because no one is coming to save you; not because they don’t care, but because they are desperate for their own salvation.

I first heard this song when I was about nine or ten years old, I think it was even my first BNL song. Even before I knew what depression was or that I might one day potentially have some form of it, a song about feeling bad even when everything is okay kind of blew my mind. I think even those of us who don't suffer from depression have had times like that. Still one of my favorite songs ever.

I can't put my finger on WHY but this song reminds me of an uneventful day in late September some 30+ years ago on the farm where I grew up (somewhere between summer and autumn). More inexplicable still, I can't identify WHY I remember this particular day at all. Perhaps I wouldn't have-had this song not come out. It's weird how music works sometimes.

The song is based upon a person suffering from depression. In the lyrics they address several instances of what a depressed person might feel. The key ones are "sleep away the afternoon", "on an evening such as this, it's hard to tell if I exist". I've been down this path before but I appreciate their lyrics and I do love the Barenaked Ladies.

Such a cool song that brings be back to simpler times when i could put the sprinkler on the lawn, run thru with my gym shorts on. Take a sip right from the hose and change into some dryer clothes. Walk up the stairs to my room and sleep away the afternoon. Why can't i do that now.😢

I had depression because of many personal reasons and am still getting it under control by learning to appreciate how much harder other people have to go through life and from good positive vibes and inspiriational heroes. They say nothing beats depression(anger) than working it out of your system with laughter and learning to make compromises and learning to be mature and willing to help others less fortunate so they can be successful in defeating their problems so they can be even more inspired and reciprocating on and on and on.
