This was my sisters wedding song! She married her high school sweetheart when they were only sixteen because he was diagnosed with leukaemia and given six months to live. They’d been dating since the beginning of grade seven. They danced to this song and every single one of us jaded teenage Gen X’ers were crying our eyes out! He lived another four good years, very happily with my sister and our family before spending the last few months slowly deteriorating, and passing away in our living room a few days before his twenty second birthday. He played this song one last time for my sister an hour before he passed, and it will always remind me of one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever witnessed! The saddest part is that more than twenty years later she still hasn’t dated once

My sister used to love this song back in the 90s when she was in her teens. She passed away last year and I came here to remember her. Loved growing up in the 90s listening to these classics.
It's so easy to forget how incredibly original this Summer of '98 masterpiece is! In one song, Eagle-Eye Cherry cleverly incorporates music stylings from the 70's, 80's and 90's, doesn't over do the hook, and keeps you wanting more. The video is also excellent, and prophetic for news stories and discussions people would be having 20 years later! This song deserves to be played a lot more.
Graduated from high school in 1998. This song....helped me push the limits of the Summer as I left all I once knew and slowly transitioned through the threshold into college. Road tripping with my oldest friend and this song came on and, if you’ve ever shared “an unspoken moment”, you know. If was weird. It was...part of the reason why I believe coincidence is the RANDOM giving you a Gold Star and saying, “Yes....but as you move through this threshold, what limits are there? Or are there really any limits?” Believe what you want, only reason I’m writing this is had magical past few days, and I still can’t explain what’s going on, but despite the ego and hate in these comments, sometimes I’ve found things that inspired me, so my purpose is to say that if you ever get the chance to share a certain song with a friend that you would die for, that you love unconditionally, to share a True Moment of Beauty and HOPE for the future, is the very reason why I keeping doing what I’m doing. Hope you can share a song and a moment with someone today. Have faith. “I feel you”...by this new band, Depeche Mode,...you should try it. Hope this makes someone smile. This post did. Thank you.
Oh wow, I have to disagree here. I love this song as a comfort song, but to call it a masterpiece is just insane in my opinion. It is literally just one of the most used 4 chord loops, a very simple melody with little vocal dynamics, quite repetitive lyrics, and a super easy guitar solo. It works as a pop song because it is incredibly simple and enjoyable, but I feel like it should take a lot more for something to be described as a masterpiece.
@@noone-ld7pt people relate but clear channel decided what was and wasn't a masterpiece in those days, not the people in most cases. What ever got funder by the NWO got played and famous regardless of talent or morals.

Every time this song comes on I get these haunting and deep chills-it’s one of the most nostalgic feelings and it feels so damn good. Makes me wanna cry sometimes. These are the times we live for. And it never fails me, the chills always come. What a rush of emotions here. Am I the only weirdo here? Long live the 90s!
The same goes for me! This song was the opening song on a mixed tape I made for this girl that I had a major crush on. I left it by her window, knocked on it, ran and hid in the bushes to see her reaction. She took the tape, looked at it, smiled and put it in her cassette player. I remember her facial expression when this song came on, seeing her smile even bigger and sing along to the song was enough for me.. I didn’t stick around to the end of the song.. I hopped and skipped home feeling sooo good inside🙂.. Gosh can we go back to the 90s please?
I get those too. I’m not sure how old you are but I was born in 93 . This song doesn’t quite do it but it’s close. But I have SUPER vivid memories of thoughts I had to music at like 3 and those songs are weird for me.

Seemed more pure and innocent - not trying to sound naive here. I think a lot of this has to do bc we were also younger....but damn it was a great time.
This song is what I think of when I think of that post 90s, pre-9/11 feeling. That brief moment in 2000 and the first part of 2001 when the 2000s were still a happy continuation of the 90s. It's like the 90s are saying farewell in their own sad, yet optimistic way. Kind of like spending one more happy, carefree night with a charismatic loved one before they die.
You and I are from the same era, 10 years old back then. Keep your head up man. I'm looking forward to buying my dream house really soon and marrying my college best friend and former teammate. We're spending our weekends roaming high mountains, traveling, and adventuring this life.

This is one of the deepest song ever (for me). It was only when my grandfather died that I realised the lyrics. Of course it's a classic, but listening to it and thinking about someone you loved and the person has died ... It brings tears. And I love the clip, it's like you keep seeing the person everywhere, in everyone. How can this be so chilly and deep, lyrics and videoclip? Absolutely love it.

I can sorta agree. When I was 4 my dad played this song at night. Still remember the lyrics by heart lol. Now being 13 wish those times were still around
I just heard a haunting version of this in the end credits of True Detective season 4, episode 5. Every song they use is a wonderful fit for the mood of the season.

Cracking up at the " I was a child' or "I was a kid when this song came out". Kids,,,I was already 33 when it came out!! And this granny STILL JAMS to this song and all the other GREAT 90s music!!
I'm 36. Used to listen to this since years. One of the best tracks ever! Just yesterday I binge watched this series ONE DAY. They played this track in one of the episodes. Made me listen to it again now and makes me think about the show. Heartbreaking (not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched that show)
This brings up so many memories. I was just a kid when we got cable TV and had MTV there. While other kids were watching cartoons, I would be watching MTV instead non-stop, discovered so many awesome tracks. I clearly remember when this one came out in October 1997 (I was 8 at the time), they would play it like 20 times a day and I loved the music and the video, even though I hardly understood a word since English wasn't my main language and I basically learned English through MTV. Good times... And now all of a sudden I remembered this song before going to sleep and it's like I traveled through time. Music is the only time machine we have.
LYRICS Go on and close the curtains 'Cause all we need is candlelight You and me, and a bottle of wine To hold you tonight (oh) Well we know I'm going away And how I wish, I wish it weren't so So take this wine and drink with me And let's delay our misery Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone There's a log on the fire And it burns like me for you Tomorrow comes with one desire To take me away (oh it's true) It ain't easy to say goodbye Darlin' please, don't start to cry 'Cause girl you know I've got to go (oh) And Lord I wish it wasn't so Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow comes to take me away I wish that I, that I could stay But girl you know I've got to go (oh) And Lord I wish wasn't so Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow I'll be gone

Your comment made me smile! I was raised by strict Christian grandparents. I remember falling asleep at night and taping my favorite songs in secrecy. It's so funny to remember how much trouble I knew I would be in if I got "busted"... And music was actually TAME back then compared to mainstream music these days... Good times :)
Oh my god, my story is very similar. We were "CHRISTIAN MUSIC ONLY" and had little privacy. I used to record the songs of this year span on a tape player, it felt like I was listening to Radio Free America from the eastern end of the Berlin Wall. I will love this song forever.
Yeah, so many songs have so many memories for me, some from high school, some from college, some from university. This was out during my placement year at Uni. The story I heard was that he wrote this song for his girlfriend right before he left to record his first album. I believe this song was the first song released from the album. Ironic. Also love how he plays so many of the characters in the video.

As a kid I moved away from my family's ranch to the inner city... this is the song that came on the radio as we were backing out of the drive way.. I'll never forget my little eyes welling up.
I never understood the hate this song gets. Yes the lyrics are simple, yes the chords are simple, but that what makes it great in my opinion. At the end of the day when all my work is done and the kids are asleep and I finally get to sit on the back porch and light up that joint as the sun goes down, this is still the first song on my playlist. I can literally feel the stress melt away from my body. I’m nearly 41 years old and I love it just as much today as I did when I heard it for the first time in high school.
This is how I see things in life. Most times we don't appreciate all the music we hear during the time it was released unless you like the music already. Then maybe 7 to 15 years later when you hear it again a bunch of memories flood your mind. Some are happiness, sadness and in-between. Those are the moments when your appreciation is turned on like a switch. And that's what am going through right now as am typing this. I will probably see this message again of mine one day in the future and reflect all over again about where and were and why I was typing all this.
I feel like everything you've said just took the words right out of my mouth. I heard this song a million times growing up in my early teen years and never appreciated it matter fact, I almost hated this song and now that I'm in my mid 30's, listening to this song brings back soo many memories of growing up and all the ups and down's I went through. I grew up listening to Hip Hop and Jazz so I never cared for this but, now I appreciate and love this song so much and I'm going through this same experience with music from the past all the time now. I've always wondered how many other people feel out there feel the same way about these types of things. Cheers to you , wherever you're bro.

Reality is harsh. But if you devote to living a healthly life style and try to not get stressed, you can live longer. You're still gonna die either way.
This song gave me depression when I was a child, and I couldn't understand why. As an adult who has now experienced loss, I understand it better now. Sometimes it's not right to be happy.

The world and people can be cruel, but some of us old internet monsters are still people, never be afraid to vent. My thoughts are with you and I wish you all well. I am old enough to have lost all my Grands long ago, I miss them still, but they are a part of my heart and who I am. Just be sure (if it has to happen) to let her go in peace, then grieve. I have seen people try to hang on because their family can't let go, and it hurts everyone more. Love.
Man, this song brings bittersweet memories. A good friend at the time would come to my house parties and sing this song and we'd all sing along. Then he got married to a woman that hated me, and all of his other friends and they moved away and I never saw him again. A real shame.

Those were the days weren't they? Better times I say. Now its madness and I only fear its going to get worse. Not trying to be funny. I truly cherish the 90s. It was the last great decade. Every decade since has gotten progressively worse.

I suppose it casts some sort of spell over the lot of us: that aching to go back and the simultaneous feeling of never having left. Overcome by yearning, but not truly understanding what is is we want; only that it is gone forever.
I can still picture where and when I heard 'Save Tonight' for the first time: I was trying on clothes in a shop that didn't just play music but had a TV up on the wall that was permanently set to MTV and that's when I saw the video clip with this song that had just been released. It became one of my forever-favourites, which is why it's on my dementia play list, the list with songs that someone will have to put on for me if I ever get dementia. I started the list after seeing in a documentary how happy old people with Alzheimer's would become whenever they were able to listen to their favourite songs from back when they were young(er). They couldn't recognise their closest relatives yet they could remember the lyrics of these songs and sing along. I'm 72 now, so that'll be me in a few years time 😄
Nostalgia: its delicate, but potent. In Greek, "nostalgia" literally means "the pain from an old wound." It's a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone; a feeling of a place where we ache to go again. -Don Draper

And forever will be

Every time this song comes on I get these haunting and deep chills-it’s one of the most nostalgic feelings and it feels so damn good. Makes me wanna cry sometimes. These are the times we live for. And it never fails me, the chills always come. What a rush of emotions here. Am I the only weirdo here? Long live the 90s!
I’m so with you lol
@@christophermoran7429 I was born in 87 - I'm glad you can kind of relate - the memories are VERY vivid for me too! Almost haunting....how can you miss a whole decade? I know the 90s werent perfect, but it was a super chill time. A time very different than today. Real fun!

Summer of 98. 13 years old, feels like a whole other world now. I used to be excited for the future. Now I dread it
Don’t dread it mate, keep your head up 😊

This is one of the deepest song ever (for me). It was only when my grandfather died that I realised the lyrics. Of course it's a classic, but listening to it and thinking about someone you loved and the person has died ... It brings tears. And I love the clip, it's like you keep seeing the person everywhere, in everyone.
How can this be so chilly and deep, lyrics and videoclip? Absolutely love it.
Never thought on it. Thank you for sharing.
This is over 20 years old now, I’m 37 now and I just feel wiser not older. This rolls back good memories. Amazing song, here’s to another 20 plus years
I can sorta agree. When I was 4 my dad played this song at night. Still remember the lyrics by heart lol. Now being 13 wish those times were still around

These pop songs have a distinct 90's sound.
Approach to sound mixing is lighter than today.
Recorded on to tape, In the search for perfection in todays recordings, the soul is lost.
Totally. Over editing with digital removes the heart of the music. Imperfections are part of the art.
Zero dynamics in today's music.
I just heard a haunting version of this in the end credits of True Detective season 4, episode 5. Every song they use is a wonderful fit for the mood of the season.
^^ this is what brought me here as well!! Was a good cover especially like you said for the tone of this season, but still doesn’t have anything on the OG version….

LYRICS
Go on and close the curtains
'Cause all we need is candlelight
You and me, and a bottle of wine
To hold you tonight (oh)
Well we know I'm going away
And how I wish, I wish it weren't so
So take this wine and drink with me
And let's delay our misery
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
There's a log on the fire
And it burns like me for you
Tomorrow comes with one desire
To take me away (oh it's true)
It ain't easy to say goodbye
Darlin' please, don't start to cry
'Cause girl you know I've got to go (oh)
And Lord I wish it wasn't so
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow comes to take me away
I wish that I, that I could stay
But girl you know I've got to go (oh)
And Lord I wish wasn't so
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone

I grew up in such a strict environment we werent allowed to listen to music or watch movies. I would sneak downstairs at midnight when my parents were sleep and watch music videos with my sister all night. I miss the 90s
MYSTERYSUNZA Thats funny because MY strict upbringing was in a Muslim household. I guess regardless of where you're from, kids will be kids...

Seems each some is like a time stamp on the best decade of my life, from 13-23 (high school, college, university and first year in work, all in the space of 10 years!)

Rest in peace dad I love you
Sorry to hear about your dad.
Nostalgia hits hard with this song, it gets me thinking and reminising about all the different people I've met and the memories throughout my life.
Gosh I remember those beautiful days. Can we go back in time 😢
Me too!
I feel you. I'm currently on my back porch on my hammock with my dog and a good beer. This song is always part of my meditation.

@@markimusmaximus7870 yes. I listen to just about every genre pre 2000s. I can’t stand rap today. R&B and hip hop are just as bad as pop now. Pop is horrible today. What happened to alternative?
-Don Draper
this comment made me feel good
Watch the show. I don't like most television or movies, but Mad Men is art. Art with a message.

Such a deep and soulful song. You can feel the love
I was a child when this song was released. I use to listen to this nonstop. I vaguely remember the music video. After all these years this song has still stayed with me, and reminds me of a much more innocent time in my life. ❤
I didn't realize how much this song would be the soundtrack to a lot of memories growing up.
This is the most beautiful nostalgic song I've ever heard. God Bless from Australia.
Great song! When I was in the university I had it on my mp3 player and I listened it over and over again.
Man theres a feeling you get with music when you actually feel it and this is one of those songs you feel the atoms inside you bouncing wanting to just be free and happy and full of life music is literally a window to the soul🖤💥

@@niconico6391 because you are so young and it would make sense why you don't know the song but it is possible you can be older or younger and not know the song.
