All star gets all the hype but this is their best song. The guitar and organ go so hard and the rhythm in which he sings the lyrics makes it so catchy. RIP Steve
Agreed!
A man of class I see. This song rules, obviously Allstar is a great song but there's something special about this one.
True
One of the few songs I'll dance to. Such a classic!
100%
When I was 12-13 years old and it was the late 90s, this was a grooving tune. As someone who grew up on classic rock, Smashmouth was a 90s band I actually enjoyed. Thanks for the memories, Steve and RIP.
Wot? 12-13 years old. YOU WERE JUST A KID. I was already 35!!!
Same here 14 and mom turned me on to classic rock so this hit me right as rain
Me too--there are very few bands in the '90s that I know of that were worth listening to. Smash Mouth, Fatboy Slim, Beck. I think that's the end of the list?
These punks kids. I think I was in my late 20s.....

When this was released in 97 it stood apart from EVERYTHING at the time. If you weren’t living then you probably don’t get it. Maybe you do. This shit was fire then and it is now. They had a unique sounds and his voice was just as distinct. Stands the test of time. Thanks for creating this masterpiece. RIP Steve.
I agree!
It was ground breaking and yes ahead of it's time. My girlfriend back then hated this song. She just didn't get it. It made me play it extra loud when she was in the car lol!!
It didn't matter what song it was whether you had heard before it or not, you know it was Smash Mouth the second the radio station queued it up.

I like how Smash Mouth can make music that sounds like a hot summer day
Yes! The lead singer's voice has that feeling of summer in the early 2000s
They got that 60s surf rock vibe with a hint of 80s new wave.
I'm ready to listen to this one Summer day while at a Beach somewhere! Thank you Smashmouth for this song. Happy 2021! 🍀😁🙏🏻💖💌

The 90s retro-60s aesthetics were amazing.
Yeah but the song is kinda a criticism of that is it not? “The fashion is smashing the true meaning of it.”
This song sounds like something The Doors would’ve made, RIP Steve
It's funny you mention cause there's was a Door's interview Jim Morrison mentioned in the future will be this type of music around in the later future.
Listen to the Doors Soul Kitchen or When the Music’s Over and yeah. They were definitely inspired by Doors riffs.

One of my favorites from the 90's.
That organ
That groove is from the 60’s it’s from “When the music’s over” by The Doors. Both are great songs
Fun fact: The guitar tone in this song was done with a Fender Jaguar, a Marshall plexi, and a fuzz pedal with a dead/dying battery and they were never able to recreate it. It's an absolutely incredible sounding guitar riff and I've always loved how they managed to get that tone.

Yes amen this is Trevor
That was Kurt Cobain
Yes Cobain but late 90s kids don’t fully grasp that as deep as early 90s teens
@@cosmosaic8117 I hear ya but as someone who was born in 1980 and a teenager through most of the early and late 90s, I just feel like voice of a generation isn't really appropriate for Steve Harwell. A really good songwriter and lyricist for sure (RIP) but when I think of voice of a generation for the 90s I think of the Seattle guys like Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Layne Staley, and Chris Cornell, or Billy Corgan or maybe even Shannon Hoon or Bradley Knowles, before I'd think of Harwell. Whatever, it's a silly argument and I have mad respect for him either way.

This song was so far ahead of its time while also encapsulating imagery and awareness of the decades past. It was an anomaly in the hard-rock dominated late 90s and will always be a classic. RIP!

This song wasn't "far ahead" of anything, or even that original----it's obviously influenced by late '60s psychedelic rock, but that's why I liked it, and probably why it was such a big hit.
I was 9 years old and would wait next to the radio or TV all day just for this song to come on again. Thanks, Steve, rest in peace 🙏
YOU KID. I WAS ALREADY 35!!!
You didn't have to wait all day, they played it like every hour on MTV!
By far, one of my favorite Smash Mouth singles when it came out in 1997. With the popularity of Austin Powers, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Avengers, Mission Impossible, and Goldeneye (the game 😁), it helped resurge the popularity of 60s psychedelic pop songs for one last run. Shit, even Robert Christgau gave Fush Yu Wang an A- and that's VERY rare for a newcomer to earn this score from this guy. But damn dude...he's gone now. Please show your support for your artists, ya'll...before their gone. Thanks again, Steve. Rest in Peace.🕯🕯
People love "All Star," and I get it, I grew up and was graduating right around that time period, but this is forever what I associate Smash Mouth with. One of the greatest pop culture songs of all time. RIP Steve.
An absolutely underrated classic. First, R.I.P. to Steve Harwell. This song always will always will have special place in my heart. I was really huge jazzbo; stuff like Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, etc... Then I heard this song in the summer of '97. All my friends hated it, but I loved the vibe and the ambience of the spring reverb guitars and warmth the vocals and drums. This track feels like a beautifully hot summer day with an unmatched brilliance to it. Novel yet very classy.
I also owe this band a massive thank you for getting me into experimental lounge music specifically the group Tipsy! - a Bay Area duo that was also incredibly amazing for its time. So crazy- I haven't listened to Smash Mouth in over a DECADE, and I just started listening to them again last week, for I don't even know what reason.
And then today I find out about Steve, and I am just crushed 🥺
He lives forever through his music. I know I'll never forget him. Smash Mouth was the first concert I attended without my parents. (Del Mar Fair, San Diego)
During the performance, Steve chucked his red party cup into the crowd and it narrowly missed me. The contents got me pretty good, though, when someone attempted to catch the cup but instead swatted it down.
I was so freaked out that my parents would smell the beer and think me & my friends had been drinking. There's no way my mom would've believed that it was just the lead singer's beer all over me 😆
One of the coolest songs ever. It sticks in your head!!
You can’t think of the 90’s without thinking about Smash Mouth. Hate to hear Steve Howell only has hours to live. Thank you for the music, you will love on through it.
It was 1999, one of the few memories I have as a 3 year old is driving around in my Dad’s convertible on a sunny summer California day and All Star comes on the radio and my Dad and sister are teasing me because apparently it’s my favorite song and I lose it whenever I hear it. Shed a few tears today hearing that the singer passed, didn’t know how dear to my heart they were. Later on I got caught up in the jokes and memes about Smash mouth, but they’re no joke. Smash Mouth's 'Walkin' On The Sun' offers a thorough analysis of the collapse of late 20th century American counterculture, attributing it to both the commercialization of the alternative lifestyle and the devastating intergenerational effects of drug abuse. In this essay, I will
Actually it’s about the race riots
@@InkfinityOkamix3 Says the band in some interview, but the lyrics reference the commercialization of 60's counterculture mostly. It seems like they are alluding to the LA Riots in the last set of lyrics "New is on at 10, your neighborhood is under attack" and "handkerchief is soaked in tears because her baby's life has been revoked". The message seems to be basically that counterculture is cylindrical and that it becomes just another stupid trend before it ever starts to make any real difference. Occupy Wall Street, SJWs and The Tea Party might be good modern examples. The start off genuine, but the get co opted by posers and those with ulterior motives, such as Coca Cola's "By The World a Coke" ad or Pepsi's infamous Black Lives Matter protest ad.

@@Il_Exile_lI really?? This was a number 1 single, on the ALL GENRE FORMAT hot 100!!! Selling out was impossible, they were already sold. This album was just as formulatic as Astro Lounge. But they vary in different ways. The thing is, when this song came out it sounded unique and original. But by 1999 this sound had already been in the forefront of the mainstream with other artists performing similar music.
After the likes of Sugar Ray, Sublime and other reggae/ska influenced groups started putting out hit after hit, it was so familiar. So Smash Mouth did NOT sell out. They only happened to represent a popular movement in music.
