Might add it to my "Must have" list for Windows! Alongside the following: - TaskbarX (haven't made the move to Win11 yet) - WinDynamicDesktop for dynamic Wallpaper based on time - QuickLook to preview some document types with ease - ModernFlyouts for better/nicer Volume/Brightness Up/Down and media control tooltips - TaskbarGroups to group my applications in the Windows taskbar much like on macOS - PowerToys which should definitely be native to Windows - Chocolatey as package manager
So glad to see this, I was using Files for a long time and loved it, but I had found in in the MS Store. After several fresh installs I went to reinstall and found it was $10. If I were in a position to support developer I would, but $ is tight
Am I missing something? Files is much slower to navigate, each time it has significant delay when entering or leaving the folder, how is no one mentioning this? It's clearly a deal breaker isn't it?
Papermerge seems worthy of your evaluation as a docker app on truenas working with a windows daily driver environment. And, couldn't agree more that the potential for using tags in the "files" file explorer app is a major wishlist capability which I hope matures soon. Thanks for videos.
Don't recommend, though it is free. It's really slow; when navigating folders, you'll find right away that waiting even half a second for the data to load in every folder really slows you down and impedes work.
Tried this for a week, customised it and actually liked it however its resource heavy and not as snappy as the other ive tried. I use XYPlorer. Hovers around 8-10mb memory usage while files is easily 120mb+
I wish Microsoft would add more APIs to replace core functions. Like add an API for file manager, the task bar, the start menu, onscreen keyboard, etc. This will allow power users to really customize their computers and they will be more stable than the hackey way this tools are often built to overcome the lack of an API.
I absolutely love this app, as a windows 10 user whos planning to upgrade to 11 it gives me a peek of how it works, it also has many more functions and is much cleaner in design!
It took Apple years multiple macOS releases to get tagging right in Finder. It was a complete basket case in the beginning but now works fantastic. Would be very impressed if a few open source guys could implement it as well.
Looks nice but I favor functionality over design (when I can't have both). Total Commander remains my power tool for efficient and fast file management (batch rename, archiving, search, preview). Bought the license to thank Ghisler for the hundreds of hours saved during huge batch file renames. My freeware loving clients get FreeCommander XE.
I didnt see anything that differentiated it from regular file explorer. Tabs is nice but meh... what about tagging (text) and searching those tags. After seeing what CAN be done with file explorers, this is just closer to a toy project.
I wish they hadn't called it "Files"--the most generic name they could've given it. It's literally impossible to google anything about it. It's such a boneheaded mistake.
What I reallymiss and thats a big downsize of the file app, on the left side the navigation, ok you can click on a "drive" and all folders opens yeah where not under it nope in the right window. that where I have to navigate? Nothing similar seen on any file app. Makes navigation more strange. No alternative at the moment for real use for me
@@christianlempa But why? The only downside of TC is lack of shiny skins. But instead it offers a ton of functionality: different colors for different file types (aka tagging) - sure file comparison - out of the box group renaming (by template or regexp) - easy show sizes of all folders inside catalog (on demand, by hotkey) - sure tabs for each panel - ofcourse plugins - yep, a lot hotkeys for ANY operation etc etc etc
Hi Christian, I first saw this file manager 3 weeks ago (TechHut made a video about it) and I like it. If you have ever worked with linux-desktops, you wunder (I do!) why microsoft didn´t change functions in the windows file-manager for years (multiple tabs, folder size etc.). I think files will become better in further releases, too. Thanks for the video :-)
I disabled it as the default file manager because, when starting it from folder shortcuts, it would only open the Home folder. Basically, I would always have to manually navigate to folder I want to go to.
This completely screwed up my default Windows File manager when I didn't like using this Files app. I don't know how to fix my file explorer and I have done everything that the internet has provided and I still don't know what to do.

Not opensource project but 1000X more more powerfull in my own opinion : Total Commander. It need some time to get use of it... but once you use it you don't want something else anymore.
Tired it and actually liked it. But it's too resource heavy for me as I have a potato pc. I'll probably use an Add on for tab browsing. Can't decide between qttabbar and clover.
Good file manager, better overview. But the preview is too small to read a pdf page on my 27 inch monitor. I also tried One commander, which offers a handy column view an a big preview. But Files does look easier and clearer.
It's a neat program but i still find myself going back to TotalCommander (and its contemporaries, depending on the platform i am on) just because it's so much faster to navigate than either Files or the native File Explorer.
Files is not good. I installed it over a year ago, and ended up removing it due to frequent crashes. It was also quite laggy. I decided to try it again the other week, and it crashed within 5 minutes. I do not recommend using it, not stable. Why can no one program anything that is just stable anymore? It's a joke.
After watching this my first thought is tags may be an attribute in ntfs alternate stream. Just curious anyone tried "streams yourfile.ext" on a file with a tag (streams is is an Microsoft sysinternals tool you can download) ?
The searchbar isn't working any good at all. It won't find your files, it will find something, but like 2% of what windows explorer will find. Especially on network drives that search is unusable. So sadly not a replacement for windows explorer 😬
I also find it incredible that MS haven't implemented tabs. I' been using the excellent QTTabbar on windows 10, to get this functionality for quite a while. Not sure if it works with Windows 11, but I'll be sure to check this program out when I do eventually upgrade my OA if not.
I could change in a blink of an eye to files if they would change the view of the folder as large icons as it was with win 7. Win 11 has visually destroyed all my music collection. It shows the cover of the album in an awful way and that is just sad.
it looks good but is slower than windows default file explorer. i used it for few months and then when uninstalled it ..my windows file explorer stopped working , i cant open it and it gives an Application not found errror . i tried few ways of fixing it. didn't work and now i have to reinstall windows. so be careful.
Cooles Programm, werde ich definitiv ausprobieren. Btw. als ich die Stimme gehört habe hab ich gedacht oh ein deutscher. Dann sehe ich den Namen und ich lag richtig 😅
Not running very well on my Win 10 Pro machine. Crashes when I right click to cut/paste, stopped showing my drives. Apparently it has a ways to go before it's dependable.
Most Linux file managers have the tab and split pane views already and it's one thing I miss when I have to use windows explorer. At first I wanted Dolphin to almost mimic Windows file explorer, as explorer is essentially already in split pane mode. Now I wish Windows would do what Dolphin does LOL. Another feature thats handy is being able to switch on a terminal window at he bottom that automatically moves to whatever directory you select in the FM. Great for command based apps like ffmpeg and similar without having to type cd .. or cd /// etc, just click and it's done.
I tried it for a few mins and was amazed by how much better it looks and how better the ui is. I also enjoy the tabs feature. Then I went ahead and tried to do some basic file managing. Dragging files does not work, thats fine, maybe I can get used to use to cut. It doesn't work for half of the operations. Okay, maybe I can just copy and paste and delete later. Crashes. HMMM, hate on windows, but hey at least windows do the bare minimum of "working"

Basic search doesn't work so why is this better? Windows explorer is garbage on W10 and I need an application that can search all sub-folders.

They would probably need to have a personal DB to hold tags so that way if they get copied or moved the tag settings go with it too.
