this is what Explorer in Win11 should've looked like imo rather than the same Explorer being recycled again from Win8 with a new topbar slapped on, much more consistent design following Win11's design language
@@thexavier666 Vista. Every Windows version since has introduced (more or less) minor changes to it so it looks a bit different every new version but Windows Explorer in it's current form (as in since the last major overhaul or replacement) has existed since Vista.

I really like the windows 10 copy progress boxes, they show a speed diagram, and a couple more useful progress information, so I would want that to be in the new files app as well.
My favorite feature is the ability to sort files alongside folders. Default Windows file explorer functionality separates folders away from files regardless of how you sort. So, if you have a Downloads folder with 1000's of files in there and sort by modified date, like I do, you have to scroll massive distances just to each the most recent files from the most recent folders. And when you're generally using the Downloads folder to unpack archived downloads, you generally want to see those folders right next to the archive you just unpacked.
What I like about it is that it doesn't try to depart radically from the Windows File Explorer. It just fills some gaps and makes some usability improvements.
Files is slow, and it can't even do some simple tasks like drag and dropping files from folder to Mail. So no matter what, they shouldn't copy something, that is literally slower than their Explorer and can do less. This feels like Linux.

Not gonna lie but one thing I really like in windows file explorer is the Quick Access column where you can go to recent folders easily, I'd appreciate if that was in Files :)
Bundles are neat. Almost like a folder containing shortcuts to folders and files. In other words: Basically every feature Files has (except the multicolumn browsing and tabs) can be done/replicated in Windows Explorer, and it's about as "slow" to do it as it is "fast" in Files. 8:12 oh hey! that's like having two explorer windows open side by side! cool.
I really like Files' aesthetics and features (admittedly I don't use tabs that much since i prefer to drag drop between two windows) but I'm not switching until they improve the performance cause it's annoyingly slow
So far i really like "files".. One thing i'd like to mention though: it kinda feels slow and sluggish.. Might just be that the animations are a bit poorly made but otherwise it's fantastic so far! It would also have been nice if "files" somehow managed to import folder preferences from explorer (sort mode, group mode, pinned folders, etc.) but i realize this would be quite a hassle to implement.. Edit: Yeeeah, no.. I probably won't be using it long term. Whilst it is beautiful, better organized and has more functionality than explorer, it really is extremely slow most of the time..
I love this so much especially when I installed linux on my other computer and used tabs in the gnome file explorer I couldn't go back to the normal windows explorer so this helps
I wish I had this app sooner, was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why Windows Explorer kept crashing when opening network folders and Files works like a charm.
The real game changer for me was not tabs (well, tabs are really useful of course), but the dual panes. I was tired to right-click->"Open in a new window" just to move files around!
I Don't know who you are. but your video appeared on my recommendations and I enjoyed it! I was looking for something related to this video. sadly as far as I'm seeing on the comments the app still has kinks to iron out. but I think it will be a killer app on the near future once they fix the performance.
This is incredible. I believe even Microsoft wouldn't be able to make explorer as coherent to the rest of the OS if they tried. I also absolutely love how the tab buttons have slight amount of shadows around them - exactly what I wanted in new Safari layout in MacOS. As it's too flat in many places for my taste. Not using Windows that often nowdays, but definitely my must have from now on.
Explorer may doesn't look that good but it is waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy more reliable, less buggy and more efficient than Files. Which is the reason why I got rid of Files around 1 week after installation.
@@Gosu9765 I didn't even need 10 minutes to find a way to completly crash Files with the only way to get it back is reinstalling or completely resetting the app. That shouldn't be the case for such an essential app.

Coming from the Linux world, where good and free file managers are all over the place, I always missed the most basic features of file managers when using the windows explorer. No tabs, no dual pane view. Now what really surprised me is that there are only a few free alternatives on windows. Looks like everyone wants to get money from this, the reference in features seems to be directory opus, but I won’t pay 90 AUS$ for a file explorer (whatever this is in real money) So thanks for this video. / there is a windows version of dolphin, the default fm from KDE. Just downloaded from the Microsoft store and open it while what a much simpler easier to use design I really like the way this is presented you quickly know where you are on your computer whether in the cloud or on a network drive it’s easily identifiable kudos to you for recommending this to us thanks
You're literally the only person that ever said that File Explorer has a nice UI. Everyone on Reddit always complaints about how crap it looks. I use Files UWP too and it gives me heavy Nautilus vibes since it's simple but it has the main features that people actually want. I came here to see a Linux user's view.
I think it's much better than Nautilus. While Nautilus looks pretty, I think the more advanced features are way too buried. I couldn't need to look up how to enter a file path. Thunar, while not quite as sleek, is more user-friendly, IMO.
If someone finds the compiled version from the repository being extremely slow, just use the pre-compiled version from the store instead, the difference is night and day and load times are almost instant

8:12 oh hey! that's like having two explorer windows open side by side! cool.
It also shows and can easily open the wsl directory. Been using it for 2 months. Didn't know about the themes though.
Oh my god it has the `Open with code` in the context menu. I love it
I really like Files' aesthetics and features (admittedly I don't use tabs that much since i prefer to drag drop between two windows) but I'm not switching until they improve the performance cause it's annoyingly slow
Thank you!!!! Pls do more kind of these stuff
Great tip! I do am stuck as well. And i do love the alternative for the minimal file manager. Gonna try it out. Thx man!
Thanks man this is such and improvement over the default windows filemanager which has hardly had many feature updates since the early windows days!
I Don't know who you are. but your video appeared on my recommendations and I enjoyed it! I was looking for something related to this video. sadly as far as I'm seeing on the comments the app still has kinks to iron out. but I think it will be a killer app on the near future once they fix the performance.
Always wanted a Path Finder like app for Windows. This is awesome thanks!
This is a useful app that will replace my stock version of file explorer. Thank you!
@@nclsDesign What I expected - would be too good to be true if it was stable. Good to know.
@@Gosu9765 I didn't even need 10 minutes to find a way to completly crash Files with the only way to get it back is reinstalling or completely resetting the app.
That shouldn't be the case for such an essential app.
@@nclsDesign well considering its made in WPF its understandable. electron would've been WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more stable and reliable overall
Now there's a similar project for a text editor that could replace notepad. It's called Notepads. It can't open big files, but has tabbing support and beautiful acrylic background.
And why you don´t use notepad++ the most powerfull out there?
Coming from the Linux world, where good and free file managers are all over the place, I always missed the most basic features of file managers when using the windows explorer. No tabs, no dual pane view.
Now what really surprised me is that there are only a few free alternatives on windows. Looks like everyone wants to get money from this, the reference in features seems to be directory opus, but I won’t pay 90 AUS$ for a file explorer (whatever this is in real money)
So thanks for this video.
/ there is a windows version of dolphin, the default fm from KDE. I use that on Linux and it’s fine, but it lacks theming on windows. So it would be the only white application in an otherwise dark DE.
Just downloaded from the Microsoft store and open it while what a much simpler easier to use design I really like the way this is presented you quickly know where you are on your computer whether in the cloud or on a network drive it’s easily identifiable kudos to you for recommending this to us thanks
This YT Recommendation was great! I will give a try to that app.
Your mouse click sounds are really cool.
Files has Miller Columns! FINALLY!! Thank you!
still digging old school portable ones like Tablacus Explorer and CubicExplorer, if you're into keyboard navi only they solved that years ago
This file program is awsome, thanks mate.
