  • Is this the most fascinating Toriyama interview? Akira Toriyama is very much a recluse but in this interview he did for WIRED Japan, he was his most relaxed and provided interesting reading. Let's discuss why this interview is one of the most important documentations of Toriyama's personality and opinions.

      There are plenty of other photos of Toriyama, it's just that the picture that always gets used is the most recent one known to exist, due to a combination of Toriyama's notorious shyness and Japan's strict privacy laws.

      Here's an interesting set of Toriyama with one of his (and my own) idols... JACKIE FUCKING CHAN! :D
      Jackie is possibly the reason why Toriyama even thought martial arts and comedy would mesh well, it could be said that without Jackie Chan, Dragon Ball wouldn't exist.

    I've been saying that for decades. Well I lived three decades. So it was probably only two decades that I've been saying Goku's character was always meant to be the way it's portrayed in Super now. He was never supposed to be the next Superman. Actually the last episode is a good reflection of Toriyama's personality in Goku. "Oh, I saved the world? Didn't notice, I just like fighting"

      Goku is a representation of the Monkey King. And if you know the Monkey King legend then you know he's the kinda guy that crashes parties and makes a mess of things and fools out of everyone. While boasting about it.

      Xiao Champuru Huh...Goku can be quite rude at times. To me personally Goku's role in this arc is pretty interesting. We have 8 universes at stake, and yeah clearly Goku cares about his own universe. But he seems to have that as a low priority, and as our main character, that is pretty unique than most plots like this. I'm curious to see how this arc goes and I have faith that it will have a good run all the way through. (if you know...people don't drop it because of the whole power scaling thing heh). I guess Gohan would instead be the one who cares most about the universe, considering Goku told him about all this first. I still don't get why they won't tell the truth though, I mean that's what has me confused about this arc for me personally. (Damn I went on for a long while lol)

      Brizzy5starEnt Lol I mean Dragon Ball starts off with Bulma and her motorcycle running into Goku and he's perfectly fine right XD. I still feel Super has that toriyama humor. In the universe 6 arc, he was fighting so they could keep earth in universe 7. Also, during the majin buu saga and the ressurection f saga. He isn't a mindless dude who just fights for fun. I like how in the second part of the android 17 episode they flat out have Goku say what Toriyama has been saying for years: Oh, I just like fighting strong guys. If that happens to lead me to defeating someone evil then that's fine, but I don't really go looking for evil people to stop. I mean, sure if I see innocent people or animals getting hurt I won't stand for it, but I wouldn't say I'm a hero.
    That is Goku. He isn't a hero, but he's also not a villain. He's just a guy whose actions just so happen to lead to bad guys getting defeated. Unless if they mess with his friends, THEN he goes after them.

    Can we all agree that toriyama is a lazy but at the the same time genius? I mean look at the creation of super sayian,he made look like that because he and his assistant didn't want to spend their time inking goku's hair before the deadline so they pretty made it so they can save time before the deadline.
    Now that's what I call classic toriyama =D !

      KidSardonic what i actually meant is that toriyama usually when he draws something at first he didn't mind drawing it however as time it continues he got sick of drawing it so he find a way to get rid off it.
      Also that's actually the reason why he got rid of saiyans' tails and u6 sayians doesn't even have tails so that's why.

      Really not lazy, you gotta understand that this mans schedule making dragon ball was ridiculous. At one point he went an entire week without sleeping for this fucking show. I believe his average work time was 17 hours a day. Sometimes he had to cut characters just to keep the manga going

      Yeah, the more flawed version might definitely have some potential to be a lot more interesting than GoodGuyGoku, but from what I've seen of Super, Toei has taken that and sprinted in the opposite direction as fast as they can. Even aside, I automatically dislike the interpretation due to the sheer stupidity it's displayed up until this point.

    • @Minnzorr
      @Minnzorr 7 лет назад +8

      The Goku Toriyama envisioned is nothing like what made me love Dragon Ball in the past. Goku in Super is literally robotic in personality, and acts like a literal child. While I agree his personality in Z may have been a bit cliche superman, the drastic change from Z to Super is quite horrendous, and is simply bad writing.

    • @burgerkingJ

    • @seandobbins2231
      @seandobbins2231 7 лет назад +11

      I'd say a lot of us prefer that Goku to the dub. Honestly, it's that personality that Funimation gave him why so many Western fans think that he's a Superman ripoff when he's almost the opposite. I think that what Goku said in DBS episode 87 spells out the basis of Goku's character. It's really odd to me that people think that Goku was meant to be the common righteous hero trope when Toriyama went out of his way to do things differently from the norm.

  • @SuburbanSloth
    @SuburbanSloth 7 лет назад +60

    The Western comic book industry 'maturing' isn't really a recent thing tbh, a lot of people will point to Frank Miller's Dark Knight from 1986 or Alan Moore's Watchmen which came out the same month. But you had creators even earlier pushing the boundaries like Denny Oneil and Neil Adams Batman run which introduced the League of Shadows or their Green Arrow/Green Lantern Travelling heroes run which introduced social commentary of the American Wealth gap as well as post civil rights racism. Then in the mid 80s you had the British invasion when DC poached the 2000AD creators like Neil Adams and Alan Moore giving us amazing Sandman and Swamp Thing runs.
    So I think Toriyama was being flippant in his remarks of western comics, probably just speaking on a common thought process of the time. Sorry for the Paragraph of text, love your stuff Masako :)

      That was exactly what I was thinking. To be fair, Toriyama was probably unfamiliar with the comic books mentioned by you. Wouldn't be surprised if the average '80s Japanese person's knowledge of Western superheros would be based on stuff like the Adam West Batman series or those not-so-good Hanna-Barbera toons like Superfriends or The Thing.

    ''Wired: In drawing comics, what is your ratio of visual information to textual information?
    Toriyama: Really, as far as information is concerned, the visual side is bigger.
    Wired: With what stance do you view words?
    Toriyama: At any rate, I don’t waste much time blathering on about useless things. As a rule, you can understand the content to a certain extent with just the pictures, and words are nothing more than a supplement to them. I had that drilled into me by my first editor, I guess you could say…. If you’re going to come out and say something, then make it something that will strengthen the characterization even further, is what I mean.''
    There you go, when something is not directly explained in the series is because the first editor of Akira Toriyama wanted readers to use their headcanons to make sense of the situation lol

    as an comic nerd i would like you inform that the 90's were much darker
    you see in comics
    there was are ages
    Golden Age(1930-late 1940's)
    it was really violent and sexual but also the heroes were perceived to be larger than life because it boosted morale during wartime with the likes of superman and the flash eventually parents got concerned and asked for more restrictions on mainstream comics and the politicians and media also becoming aggressive did not help either.
    Silver Age(1950-late 1980's)
    The new restrictions were called the comic code authority which had a lot of no no's that really limited stories to wacky fun and campy and the heroes were know SUPER OVERPOWERED because you know silly and fun and not mature and complex
    Bronze Age(1980-present)
    but then the comic code authority was removed after so many people complained which lead to much darker story lines like the Killing Joke The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, The Death of superman, a plot line which involved Green arrows sidekick speedy's drug addiction, A death in the family, practically every Batman story. For example, Hush, The night of the Owls Endgame, I am suicide, Rise of the Batmen,etc, SO MANY MORE
    practically every story line was dark and mature and gritty Alan Moore and Frank Miller thrived in this era.
    So if dragon ball was created in the 50's and not late 80's to 1990's I would understand.
    but it not
    Great Video by the way.

      He was the character and monster designer for the series; the mascot, the slime, was designed by Toriyama. He's also done other games, such as Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon, the latter of which Toriyama thought would be his last work. Toriyama has such a unique art style that it's pretty apparent when you look at his work. On a somewhat related note, I always thought that Sidra, the Universe 9 Hakaishin, looked kind of like Borya, the wizard PC from DQ IV, which is a great game and one I would highly recommend if you haven't played any of the games yet.

    • @masterxar542
      @masterxar542 7 лет назад

      No if anything it made it worse since his editors kept wanting him to change villains because he didn't like the designs, Gero was supposed to be the one true villain of the arc, switching lead to many contrivances and plotholes.

      Arguable, that is more subjective if anything, Cell was an ok villain and the androids were huge threats, Dr. Gero could have been far better without the editors swapping things out, still filled the plot with more plotholes and inconsistencies then needed.

    I still have trouble with the idea that Toriyama was not writing Goku as a hero.
    Sure, fighting strong opponents is his primary motivation, but he still goes out of his way to protect people.
    If he'd been massively stronger than Vegeta or Majin Buu, he's have still fought them to protect the planet. He wouldn't have shrugged his shoulders left. He might not have enjoyed the battle, but he'd do enough to make them leave at least.
    That's why I thought it was out of character that Goku didn't seem to care about the Universes getting erased, although recent episodes have dropped the hint that maybe he's not as okay with it as it previously seemed.

    • @seandobbins2231
      @seandobbins2231 7 лет назад +1

      +Zikar when does Goku go out of his way to protect people? Every time he protects someone there's already a threat for him to face, a fight to have, which is his motivation. Yes, he doesn't like seeing innocent people hurt and will do something about it, which is why he is considered a good guy overall, however it's still kind of an excuse to fight.
      With many of his enemies he often let them go to allow them to get stronger so he could still have strong people to fight. Even with Buu, he knew he had to kill him because he was too dangerous, but wished to have him brought back as a good guy to fight him, ultimately showing what's the most important thing to him.
      I'm not sure that he doesn't really care, just that there's nothing that he can do about it for the moment, which is why he's focusing on just fighting and protecting his universe. Goku's never been one for contemplating situations much. Who knows, perhaps he already has an idea to protect the other universes, which is why he doesn't seem concerned, much like he did just before the Cell Games.

    Yeah... You are 100% wrong about comics in the 1990s. I'd recommend watching Linkara's show for a taste of what we had to live through back then. At best, they were Gaiman, Moore, Smith, Miller etc. At worst they were Ellis, Liefeld, Zimmerman...and Miller & Moore again. They were OBSESSED with being grimdark and gritty and "mature." So they weren't intended for kids -- they were, at their worst (which is to say 75% of the time), intended for adolescents and adults who still thought like adolescents. But at their best they were arguably more sophisticated and innovative than any of the manga on tap at that period.

    The '90s was very much when comics moved to adults. You had comics like the Watchmen and the Dark Knight Returns and Maus: three of the darkest and most mature comics out there. You had '90s edginess, anti-heroes, sex, drugs, and violence. Like, the '90s was when comics really switched to being more adult.

    • @seandobbins2231
      @seandobbins2231 7 лет назад +1

      The mature comics existed in the '80s, too, they just became more popular in the '90s. Even decades before that there were some comics that were a bit mature, with the romantic comics and whatnot, they just fell out of prominence for a long time.

    • @Tang-qi6zw

      I'm speaking towards the more popularized idea of comics, primarily being capes and superheroes. You could go back to the golden age with Horror Comics if you really wished to speak towards stuff. Nowadays, and since the '90s, comics target young adults and teenagers by default, in any case.

    Hey MasakoX! I've been recently wondering if you'll ever do a Dragonball discussion asking the question "Do you think Dragonball Z spoiled us for other anime (or at least shounen anime)?"
    I thought about this after watching SethTheProgrammer's video "Would Genjutsu Work In Dragonball?" And I thought to myself "Yeah, Genjutsu could probably work, but does somebody like Itachi Uchiha or Naruto Uzumaki have the power to BLOW UP A PLANET WITH ENOUGH EFFORT?" I then rewatched TeamFourStar's Cell vs. series and that pretty much help cement my feelings a bit, because how many anime are around that have characters who are so strong that they can easily destroy worlds if they just exert enough effort (outside of One Punch Man)?

    American comics have been dark and gritty since the 1980s it was really only in the 40s-60s were comics were mainly aimed at children but once the kids of that era grew up and were adults in the 80s and 90s comics got dark and hyper violent. e.g. Venom and Carnage and the dark knight returns.
    I hope you enjoyed the info dump on comics Masako! :)

  • @AperioContra
    @AperioContra 7 лет назад

    This is easy to mistake if you are not a comics fan, but the 90s was actually in unprecedented era of more dark themes in both storytelling and art design in comics. In fact we refer to this era as the dark age of comics. Now honestly there's really just lead to more "mature" storylines as in the kind of maturity that a teenager thinks is mature.
    This was an error that begins with Alan Moore's the watchmen, and Frank Miller's the dark Knight returns. And is punctuated by such events like the death of Superman, the joker who hadn't killed anyone for 40 years kills Jason Todd the Robin at the time. The air of the killing joke. This was also seen as the rise of image comics, new titles like Spawn and Maxx, as well as vertigo comics and things like preacher and hell raiser. So yeah the 90s was not a time of kid friendly comics, quite the opposite actually

    And when you look at how the Cell Saga turned out I see what he means by wanting to kill popular characters (Gohan stops training, Goku gets blown up, Trunks gets a hole blown in his chest).

  • @absolutelynologic8099
    @absolutelynologic8099 7 лет назад +1

    Actually comics started to get darker with the story "The Dark Knight Returns" which was written in 1986. The reason why comics started to crash in the nineties was because they were too dark. It's why marvel's movie licenses are scattered in the wind, marvel had to sell the film right in order to stay afloat. DC had backing from Warner Bros. so they were able to get along just fine which is why DC still has their film rights. Due to Geoff John's love of the silver age of comics (the much more campy and ridiculous era from the later fifties to I think early seventies) he had a desire to make comics more uplifting. After the story 'Infinite Crisis' DC's comics began to change in that direction. Just a bit of information for ya Masako in case you were interested, if not my bad then. I'd recommend anything Geoff Johns has written if you're ever interested in reading comic books. Great video Masako!

    You're incredibly wrong about American comics of the time. In the early 90's there was a huge comic boom with eXtreme and Edgy comics geared toward older adolescents with a big focus on the art. This lead to a bust in the latter half of the 90's because the stories sucked(and the speculation market dropped out). In response they started actually paying for writers and we got books like Preacher, Transmetropolitan, The Watchmen, and The Sandman.
