I love AND RESPECT Akira Toriyama, I really do He gave me my favorite Anime of all time and if he never made it I probably would've never started to workout but SOME decisions he makes for his own series, makes me look at him like....the *George Lucas* of the Anime world

This is what I love about your Dragon Ball In Depth stuff, no matter how many times I've watched the series or read it, there's always something new to learn especially about the development of it.
The simplicity of DB and Toriyama is what makes me enjoy the series and apprentice him as an mangaka. Even when he's being simplistic he can hit you with a curve ball and really make you think.
The man's a genius no doubt. I love all of his manga and even went back to do a Dragon Ball-Dragon Ball Z marathon before watching and reading super. This man will always be one of the manga kings.
Another thing about Toriyama is that he likes to keep things simple for everyone to understand. It's also the reason why I think the Goku Black arc is probably the most complex he made so far. In Dragonball standards I mean.
How's the arc complex? Nothing complex or intricate about it. He's LITERALLY just omiting who Black is, dassit.
I don't feel like debating if it's complex or not at the moment. Maybe later on when the arc is almost done. THEN we can talk.

I really enjoyed this video! Toriyama's not a perfect writer, and he also often doesn't do what people want him to do. But that's part of what makes Dragon Ball so great.

There's no such thing as "understanding Toriyama."
I think that Toriyama is a genius writer, but never reached his full potential so to speak with intricate planning and such, but I notice that Toriyama is perhaps one of the few writers that is the master of procrastination. He is one of those writers that you cannot make a good case that you should not procrastinate, that simply does not apply to Toriyama for the most part. I think a truly impressive writer can write even if given very little time and planning and Toriyama has proven himself in both areas.
Another possible example of Toriyama trolling would be in episode 57 when Gowasu was watching "GodTube" and told Zamasu that he wants to be a "GodTuber". Though not sure if it was a Toriyama idea or was just added by the studio. I found it hilarious though :D

To this day, I remember how Dragon Ball Z CONSTANTLY surprised me and caught me off-guard compared to basically any other show at that time. The fact that Toriyama himself was in suspense while writing no doubt contributed to the mindfuck that was Dragon Ball Z in my early years as a kid. I have nothing but appreciation and respect for this man and the gift he gave humanity. Fantastic video.
It's fascinating that he's a fan of science fiction, martial art films and Disney.

I write stories, I never expect to become famous as Akira, but I hope at least that a decent amount of people appreciate my work when it is ready. I share this sudden appearance of ideas, and I find it quite interesting. What you want in a story of this style is diversity and surprises. On the other hand, if an idea of mine does not fit correctly in the plan and plot I have already planned I will not put it to force in history. My favorite anime is Naruto, and one of the reasons for this is the meticulous way they organize and explain the powers and abilities. As I write the story, I realize how difficult it is to do this, and how simple it is to use the Dragon Ball method which consists of sudden increases in power based on fury and violence, it is a lazy and simple method too; it's exciting, of course, but after the animation passes, it's just one more superficial, repetitive scene.
that's because Dragon Ball Powers are based off Real life Martial Arts and applications of Ki which is like normal day to day routine in East. fucking kindergarten kids are taught about spiritual energy. there is no need to make something as simple as Ki so overconvulated.
the Dragon Ball increases aren't all about fury and violence, there's a narrative build-up around it and not all of a sudden and even in later arcs, ssj3 wasn't able to kill the final villain but teamwork.
Chakra Power is fictional so obviously it will require more explanation.
not to mention in Naruto getting powerups is way more lazy than any other anime, look at Kabuto, he doesn't even train hard but is able to excess so much different power by Chakra. that's right, in Naruto all you need is some Senju clan's Chakra to turn your Mangekyo to Rinnegan which is basically god power like wtf? characters pull eyeballs like fucking light bulb, the characters get free boost because of being recarnition, characters pull susano'o despite not being an Uchiha only by borrowing eyes from a dead man and returning it (wtf), Minato now is equalent of Kyuubi jinchuriki because he had half of kyuubi Chakra even after returning from Afterlife?
the power ups in Naruto are way worse, initially even though it copy pasted Nen System from Hunter X Hunter atleast it was diverse but in Shippuden they not only repeat the same crimes of DBZ but worsen it 10000 times.
I was in Tokyo eating with coworkers when I saw a pic of Toriyama hanging by the sushi bar. Curiosity was killing me; finally I managed to translate my questions: I was told that Toriyama visited the joint one day, long time ago, accompanied by many friends and after lots of sake, they were all discussing what should happen to Goku next. When someone of the staff said that the moon had been erased by “Jaky Chun’s” kame... so that should have a consequence. Thus he would, later that night, probably in a stupor of heat and alcohol, create the Man-Wolf; the werewolf that turns into a man when he looks at the full-moon
Basically stop expecting everything to be dragon ball z.
I don't think I can agree with the idea that he has fallen off as a writer. He may be forgetful and Super does have it's issues but when I look at Black Goku I can't agree with that. No, evil version of the protagonist is not an original idea but look at how long we the community have been trying to figure out this character. We still don't know exactly who or what he is. I can't think of a single other character in the entire series who has brought upon so much mystery, speculation and theories when compared to Black.
I wholeheartedly agree and that's even considering the fact that Toriyama isn't even writing everything, something that wasn't brought up when talking about modern Toriyama.
How does Black not making sense, make him a good character?
Peasham I never said he was a good character (Even tho I do find him interesting) and lastly, nothing about him doesn't make sense. We don't know his true and official origins yet so you can't make the claim he doesn't make sense. Not making sense would be if it turned out that Black is Goten from Trunk's future timeline, that would not make sense since Goku died from a heart virus during the android era and died before impregnating chi chi with their 2nd child.

Peasham Well yeah, that's because we almost know nothing of his origins at this point. We got a hint in a recent episode about Zamasu wishing for an evil Goku, but even that isn't %100 yet
Having been a fan of Dragon Ball for around 20 years, I'm not afraid to admit that, while I've gone out of my way to learn as much as possible about the SERIES...I don't know much about the MAN.
Videos like this make me a BETTER fan; a more COMPLETE fan.
I can do all the research I want for my own projects, but if I don't understand the mind behind Dragon Ball, or all of the small and detailed nuances, I'm doing the series a disservice.

He May have been burnt out from weekly manga, but he does like you said still care about his Characters, Dragonball Evolution making him want Revenge is a sign he cares, he would have gotten paid just for consulting BOG but he instead rewrote the whole movie even the dialogue, and went back and forth about the design of SSG. And I also think it makes him happy to see Dragonball effect a whole new generation of kids and adults.

I am a recent subscriber to this channel, and I have to say, it is excellent.
As a fan who was not an avid watcher of DB, mostly DBZ, and I never watched much GT. I basically watched it whenever I could growing up, and now having been sucked back in as an adult - because of Super. I find these videos informative, highly entertaining and educational.

I can't think of another person who's responsible for such a huge cultural icon and multimillion franchise that's so humble and understated as Akira Toriyama. Like, all the merchandise, multiple anime series, movies, videogames... It all comes from the mind of a goofy introverted japanese geek who would rather play with toy cars and watch movies all day.

Another great video, Geekdom! After watching this video I feel there's so much I can learn and understand about Toriyama. I can also relate with Toriyama when it comes to getting important work finished but waiting for the last minute to get it done. Toriyama might not be the best writer but you can't help but be trapped in the world he creates and that's why I love Dragonball.

They're I think I know the DB universe, the less I realize I know. Like Journey Into the West, it makes so much more sense to see earth expanded into beings of creatures, ancient dragons, dinosaurs, dogs, pigs and cats talking and walking around mixed well with mythology, science, space exploration and highly advanced technologies. This makes for a bigger world to tell stories in DB and that directly correlates with Toriyama's mind and work being influenced by 80s comics, gag humor, Disney, etc., as it gives him an entire new world of adventures to pull from. it's why I love DB so much - the hilariousness of Goten and Trunks taking a leak only to be approached by a gigantic dinosaur and seeing them haul-ass!?! That works great against the reality of these kids' having power to destroy planets.
That's how I want to do my comics, incorporate heavy science, space exploration, Dragonball power scales, androids, mutants, alphas, ultras, Star Trek sciences, Star Wars, stargates, Babylon 5 aliens, the Borg, Disney characters, animal/human gene splicing and the results from bestiality and how that affects the entire world (moral issues, war, genocidal events and scandal from it - how advanced alien civilizations perceive that about earth and possibly the galaxy viewing us as savages or something worse). It just opens up story telling.

I started out watching Dragon Ball first before Dragon Ball Z or Super to start from the beginning, and it actually made it more enjoyable. If it wasn’t for Dragon Ball or anime in general, I don’t know what I would be doing now. Probably on my phone all day doing nothing productive and doing nothing else with my life. Probably being lazy in life. Thank you, Toriyama sensei. We all love you.

Toriyama is a iconic writer in all genres and really a pioneer without him creating dragon ball I'm pretty sure anime wouldn't be as big as it is today. You gotta give him credit though he hasn't let the series go yet and still has input over the whole series i guess in a way you can compare him to George Lucas. I think he still has prime left I gotta feeling the rest of the Goku Black/Future Trunks arc is gonna get even more hype

The portuguese dub of DB and DBZ is loved by the pt fans because it's so goofy and fun. Many references to portuguese pop culture and of course dub chances: buu is "bubú", and piccolo is "coraçãozinho de satã" (little heart of satan), and many more. All of the things he likes watching I do too with watching Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies and going to the movies. So did my mom she had many tapes on that and all of the things he's into but she's vary artistic she can draw you looking just like yourself and paint along with a plethora of other things. The procrastination is another one that I know I did alot when I was younger then cram at the last minute. I guess those are the traits of an artistic person cuz I know I do these things and I have a sense of humour. He obviously has a sense of humour too and yes he's forgetful it all shows in his work along with other things mentioned. I'm not going to slam the guy everytime there's an inconsistency though. It's not like this is new when talking about toriyama anyway. I really don't slam him at all I love his work he has quite the imagination. He's not perfect, yes he's getting on in years and his work is starting to show it but like you said he's a grown man now his priorities are different from when he was younger spending more time with family and doing the things he enjoys doing other then drawing DB so there's no need for anyone to really complain about it. He still does really good work non the less especially when he's in the mood to do it. I've been told the samething that I can draw really well when I'm in the mood. The way you describe him sounds alot like how I am but your never the only one. Anyways l liked your video and I seen the video game for dragon quest some years ago in the Game Stop at Westshore his work is unmistakable. Remember when we learn that if the supreme kai dies so does the God of destruction? What if after the Z fighters defeat Zamasu they indirectly kill the universe 10 God of destruction...an..what if just like zamasu the god of destruction of universe 10 and his or her attendant is twisted and the attendant wants revenge an becomes the villain of the next arc..what do u think?

Gowasu is the supreme kai of universe 10, Zamasu was training to become one. So that wouldn't really work.

+De Tank But Gowasu is a kai it never stated he was ever a God of destruction. He even said in an episode to zamasu that theyre not supposed to act like gods of destruction because theyre not
I think he meant to say "God of Creation" because the rest of his sentence is consistent. With that being said, Gowasu is the only known Kaioshin of Universe 10, and Present Zamasu is only a Kaio. If Gowasu dies, so does the God of Destruction of Universe 10, but Zamasu doesn't have that link. As well, the attendants are not emotionally bound to their respective Hakaishin. They're only there to train, serve, and keep a watchful eye on them. If a Hakaishin dies, the attendant simply trains a new one. We've seen Whis joke about a new Hakaishin once Beerus eventually dies and Whis and Vados snitching on Beerus and Champa to Zeno, so I don't think any of the other attendants have emotional ties to their respective Hakaishin. They're only there to do their job and to chill in the universe.
I love this video. He does what he wants and has fun doing it and the just making shit up for this week with no real plan is a very common way of writing in comic books and sci-fi shows up untill very recently. As much as i like taking about these things like they are real at the end of the day he is just making things up so let us all chill.
I think there's one thing that everyone can understand about Akira Toriyama. He created a fantastic series.

Great video! And I agree with almost everything you said, but I really really love the Cell saga, probably more than the Frieza saga, especially the Goku vs Cell and Gohan vs Cell fights, and also you're most definitely right about him being a procrastinator and him not planning ahead which leads to inconsistencies but I think his spontaneous genuineness is what makes the series so magical, he's really a genius despite his flaws (*cries in Gohan fangirl style) and I'm thankful for that amazing franchise. Loving all of these DB in depth video! Keep them up!

Akira Toriyama could chill because he was the original Eiichiro Soda but a lot of people forget that. I just wish that he explained what the abilities for transformations were to Toei and Toyataro with feats so there wouldn't be so many problems but he does just want to enjoy the rest of his life so I don't trip.
