Also, trimming the drum into small parts and then adjusting each one gives them a more realistic feel. So if you have an 8 bar section that’s essentially the same beat chop it into 8 parts and then put the velocity or the complexity up slightly. Only small changes make a massive difference!
Can’t wait to dive in! I’m a singer songwriter looking to elevate the demos I send to producers, and maybe even produce a song well enough on my own to send off for final mixing and mastering. Appreciate your content. Thank you for making our lives easier! 🎉
Dear Colin. Your zeal and passion for this subject is awesome. You are truly fired up for this work. May God's blessings abide permanently upon you and yours.
Colin - what a wonderful series. You start your theme song off with a drum roll. Thats exactly what I'm trying to learn how to do - isolate a drum roll to paste in before my Logan (my fave) retro rock pattern.
Thanks much Colin I've been a drummer for years and am an ex professional playing many genres. This really helps as often the drum fills the drummer originates are not what I had in mind Thanks pal!
I’m also a Kyle fan! Also - I like to create a smaller region (.5 - 1 measure) within the larger region and crank up the fill knob for a cool 1 bar fill.
As powerful as they are I rarely use the drum parts GarageBand generates, I generally roll my own with each part of the kit on its own track. Great thing about that is that I can process each part of the kit individually and generally at the end choose the kit for each drums track that sits best in the mix. Works for me I guess mostly because my philosophy when it comes to drums is very much KISS. One problem I've found with the track for each part of the kit is in the rare situation of changing the key of the project with parts already done having to go through all the drum kit parts and moving them back to the notes correct for that part of the kit. Would be great to have a "drum kit part" checkbox on each track that stops key change moving the notes for the checked tracks.
Cheers Colin...You may well cover these points later..... but I've found that if you start with a scratch track or say a bass track you can elect to follow that track and the drummer will tie in well with what you have already composed. The other one to help with sections and frill defaults is to put together an arrangement track identifying the parts of the song and when you select a drummer track it has a good attempt at fitting in with your designated arrangement and follows those sections (probably not as well as tailored sections but gets you started well)
You are going to do yourself out of a job Colin :). The GB Drummer is so powerful. My favourite part of making music is messing with the Drummers and kits.
Is there a drummer plugin like this for Cubase? I love that you can drag the dot around to change the dynamics. It's great for getting an idea going without much fuss.
@@TheBandGuide so if you want toms _and_ cymbals then duplicate the track and on the mixer turn off everything but the drum part you want to add and then mix that in with the other drums you have. Not sure if I make sense 😂
How do you match a drum track on a song? How does the follow feature work? If you record a song on one track, can you make a new drum track to match the tempo? Can you use garage band to calculate a tempo of an existing song?
Once again, thanks Colin for your insights and willingness to share. I was wondering if you might do (or maybe you already did) a short video on keyboard commands in GB.
@@TheBandGuide Found the video. Yes this helps. I recall seeing you use what appeared to be a shortcut (in a different video) to reset the PAN control to ZERO. Does this exist?
Thank you. Up till now all I have been doing is taking the drum tracks from the library and copying and pasting them in and using the fills. This might finally get me using the GB drummer to make more realistic drums. Question: often in my songs I might use a rest with a crash cymbal in certain sections and also ending a song with them. Do you have a GB Drummer hack for that?
I would convert it to midi - which would allow me to program in exactly what I want at key points. I have a video coming next week where I'll explain this more!
Thanks for the tutorial I’m still trying to get to grips with the drums on garage band. I use backing tracks when I’m performing and I’m trying to enhance the drums on certain tracks. But I find I can’t alter the beat of the track on the drum tracks , id like to delete or add the beat in certain places , but I find this is quite difficult. Any suggestions?
I recently began using samples to make my own instruments through the "Plug-ins>AUInstruments>Apple>AU Sampler" function and it feels like any project I do this on becomes ruined. When opening project which uses samples, a message box will say "An Audio Unit plug-in reported a problem which might cause the system to become unstable. Please quit and restart GarageBand." The two options given are "Quit" and "Recover". If I click "quit" GarageBand will quit and show me the same message box again when I reopen it, repeat ad infinitum. If I click "recover" the app will look fine but any tracks which have sampled audio in them are silent while they should be playing. Conversely, other tracks with garageband's built in instruments will play even when muted. The volume display for these muted tracks will display nothing, as though they are not playing, and yet the track will play. This will go on working in this way for a while until suddenly a REALLY loud, startling "boop" noise is made. It doesn't matter what setting my Macbook's speakers are on, the noise will be VERY loud and painful if I'm wearing headphones. What is going on here? I am completely lost. Sampling new instruments using small bits of audio seems like something any piece of audio software should be capable of and yet GarageBand seems to not be able to cope. Is there something I'm missing or doing wrong? Do I need to just quit on garageband and get a better bit of software? If so are there any recommendations?
i record on an old multi track recorder.but i am clueless when it comes to drums.could i record one of my songs into garage band and then use garageband drummer??? if so would it automatically sync up?i have complete songs that needs drums
I had used an automated drummer and when I changed the piano slightly it completely changed the drums?? I don’t know why because I had only redone the piano chords. They were the same chords from before just a little cleaner. It changed the drums COMPLETELY and I don’t know how to get them back. I’m pretty new to GarageBand too so can someone please help me 🙏
A big issue that I have had with the drummer is that when making a song I have to leave a 1 to 2 2nd fill area at the beginning and it throws the drums off by a few beats when trying to sync to the tracks. Any fix for this?
Great question! I would play around with the "1/2" setting on the kick and snare slider. Spend some time listening to raggae songs you like and pay attention to the kick and snare and then try to find a rhythm that follows that as you play with the settings.
I would like to lay out drum noises that GO WITH the timing changes in MY song...like I want to be able to put the drum noises WHERE I WANT THEM...is that something that can be done? If all I get is a continuous beat at a certain tempo, I may as well just record them from RUclips, correct? I HATE the confusing useless drums on GarageBand.
I like to start with the garageband drummer, find a beat that's close to what I want, then copy and paste it to an instrument track where you can move around individual notes exactly where you want them. Usually it's just snare and kick that I want to move, or just delete some notes for a pause. The garageband drummer usually does a lot of cool extra stuff that I wouldn't have thought to program myself.
In my manual midi kits, there is no half open high hats anywhere. It’s really frustrating, as they were there in the old version of Garagaband. Instead, it’s just the sound of a high hat closing. Anyone have this issue? Or a solution?

What an incredible tool is drummer, absolutely amazing.
Right? Crazy to me that it’s included in GB
I’m just getting into home recording and using GB. This is hugely helpful! Thank you!

Thanks Collin I want to produce my own music but I’ve got no drummer.
Hopefully, this will help me to achieve that goal.
Definitely can! Take some time to learn it and play around with it and you can add some incredibly realistic drums to your music
You can also double up and turn on the hi-hat or toms or cymbals.
Wait- say what???

LOVE your videos. I'm trying to make a spoken word piece as if I was in a comedy club. What kind of reverb and compression would I need?
Drummer is absolutely mind blowing. My tracks sound so real because of it.
Couldn’t agree more!
Certainly much better natural drums than on Studio 1 Artist. I'll be programming on here then importing them into S1.
Great content👊🏾Thank you
superb info! thanks very much
Thats totally the chords to Stranded and Expanded :) That song is engrained in my memory.

Trim the drums parts into as small segments as you can so you can make each one slightly different.

can I manually record the drums in garage band
i record on an old multi track recorder.but i am clueless when it comes to drums.could i record one of my songs into garage band and then use garageband drummer??? if so would it automatically sync up?i have complete songs that needs drums
but how do we get it to play. im seeing all the drummers and preset drum sets, but nothings going in the actual track. no yellow.
How do you add a simple fill to the start of the track without adding fills throughout the entire track ?

Does GarageBand Drummer have a Tap Tempo feature?
Kyle So/Cal is my most used.
Are these influenced by the arrangement track? I'd love to get a handle on "Drummer" I always just get frustrated with it.
Hey bro I want to learn to make Reggae beats in the gband can you give me some insight to what to used .
Roots drums are decent. I used a roots drum part for a ska track.

Need to slow down this is for beginner right?
none of this looks like my iPad
so it is okay to do the drums at the end.
As long as you do it to tempo it’s great. You can also do it at the end if you’re not exact but if you deviate from tempo too much it’ll sound weird.
Was going to say the exact same thing! As long as you turn on the metronome and lock in on the tempo it can definitely work
@@TheBandGuide How about Suck vacuum effect and Sudden Stop of instruments how to do it in Garage band?

This video is a lifesaver. Made me so hard.
I also mix and match snare, kick, toms etc from different kits and drummers. Just duplicate the drummer track and silence the drums in the mixer desk.
Great trick! This was one of my first videos on the channel, actually!
