A coffee filter actually works way better than a paper towel for cleaning off thermal paste because it doesn't leave behind any fibers. Just a piece of advice someone shot my way once that I thought I'd pass on.
Thanks for this 👍
that depends on the quality of the kitchen tower as well. I use from Costco and I'm happy with the quality here in the UK. But, if I buy the cheapest at Asda/Wallmart - no way Jose I'd use it on a daily basis.
screenshotting this. thank you for sharing, friend.
@@Imetral0no
@@screen-protector I loves me some Costco, but the perk with coffee filters is that they don't leave behind any fibers or residue by design (no one wants floaters in their coffee), so even the cheapest pack of filters generally will beat out paper towel for removing thermal paste. That said, if you have a go to method that works, then the more power to ya. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)
Don’t know if anyone has let you know this yet: pre tin the gpu flex then apply flux and reflow to install. 10 million times easier
I'm 99% sure that this comment saved my Switch :) My soldering iron had huge issues melting tin properly, rotated through several heads I got with it before I found the right one. Having pre-tinned pads meant I just had to jab few times so the tin made contacts so felt much safer than applying soder directly on the Switch...
whats pre tin mean?
@@jahredking4934 it means that before you install the component you apply solder to the pads. By doing this when you solder the joint there is a good amount of solder on the pads, which makes it much easier to achieve a good weld
@@falconmickAnd what does reflow mean, like as in, re-heating the solder on the pads when soldering it to the board?
@@SToad I could be using the wired reflow wrong, but what I meant was basically after pre timing, once the part is in place, re-melting the solder I applied so that it melts and makes the weld I was aiming for
I've never watched a video which literary kept me on the edge of my seat, the soldering is really scary, good job
Thanks mate 👍
Thank you for the tutorial! Pretty straight forward but seeing you do it all in real time really boosts the confidence.
I just ordered 5 from aliexpress, thank you for the video. Ive had a switch sitting here for months, now its time to put it to work
Good luck, if you haven't done before practice, easy when you do it though!
Did it work
Watching this vid i did not realise just how TINY these parts are!
this is an hwfly rp2040 based clone, similar to the picofly modchips. this install is by far the easiest out of all chips and all switches because all necessary points come through the nand header. oleds and lites are WAY harder, do not underestimate the switch.
I have just finished an oled install, I write at the end it's a hard install and I don't recommend it!
@@fixingmoddingbuilding this was not a personal message, just a warning that some may want to reconsider their own attempts and seek a professional to get their newer switches modded.
What version Switch does the hwfly rp2040 work on? Only version 1? Why not just use the unpatch method to mod a version 1?
@@reyjedi3586 there's versions for all the switch's, some v1 are patched, not all can be modded without a chip

The yellow clear tape to prevent short should be cut shorter, it now appears to lift the right end of heatsink up and this could decrease it's thermal performance
That tape is way too thin to lift the heatsink.

No
Nice easy install. But I have one criticism. Would it not be better if they designed it so that chip isn't sitting directly above the ram. That's bound to reduce the heat dissipation and cause that chip to get hot
Yep
Oddly relaxing to watch.
Thanks for posting this video. I followed it to a tee. But, when booting I get a blue light, then purple (i think), then none. Blank screen. Tried redoing the mod once. Checked everything many times. Even checked connections with a meter. But the mod doesn't really seem to work. So I reverted back to stock. Oh well. lol.
11:59 It hurt my heart to see those wire cutters abused so. Get yourself down to Harbor Freight (or Lowe's / Home Depot) and grab yourself a set of tiny $1 cutters. But actually, definitely go to Harbor Freight if you have one nearby. Just spend an hour in there. Or maybe $100. Or just $10 if you can maintain self control.
😁Yes, they are on there last legs! I'm in the UK so have none of those shops but will look at treating myself soon! Thanks.

thanks to this video i was able to install a modchip thank you (i had the v2 it was basicallt the same exceot smaller points which took me a long tjme to finish (first time soldering)) also i ended up just having the memory part of the chip hanging out through the fan part instead of cutting out the metal section (thanks to some comments) and then put kapton tapw under it and a like 3 small strips across the top to secure it in place i think it depends on the model maybe its only possible on the v2 also anothee thing is i ddint put all the kapton tape on the ram part or whatever i just did an x just to secure it in place i think thays kind of better so it can still transfer heat but idk
ahhhh!!!! Yes!!!! Very delightful 🧐🧐🧐🧐
that was so easy thank you so much
What tin did you use? It seemed to flow really bad… was it like 99,5sn 0,5 cu?
Thank you for this video! I installed my Modchip and it works first time! I have to figure out why the screw on the outside of the case won't go in. The sd card and 2 left/right sides with the joycons. I think the shield might of bent?

I have a question. Can you install a modchip in my patched switch for me? I could pay for the modchip and anything else you might need.
what happend to the abcd wires? was that method removed here? or is that only on the switch lite hwfly?
Good Job, my RP2040 is coming ;)
an xacto knife with the actual very very sharp knife tips are very good for getting the cpu shield off
Thank u , but after that i got blue light when i pressed power button and if i remove my finger the blue light it disappeared , any solution???
Is the normal hwfly (not rp2040) the same soldering procedure?
I have one of these on the way. Kinda wondering if it will still fit without cutting the shield.
Install seems easy enough. Cutting the shield is probably more of a pain in the ass tbh lol (i need to buy a dremel one day 🤣)
Thoughts?
I tried to fit it without cutting but it doesn't fit, probably wouldn't advice leaving the shield off either.
Before cutting try routing that part thru the fan opening and laying it on top of the shield (with some protection from shorts in between them ofc - tape etc.) Looks like the black flex cable is far out enough to clear the opening and the indentation in the shield is just the right shape too.
Brilliant idea!@@jackbauer2698

Hey so I installed the chip but it loads strait to the main screen, do I need to flash the chip with something?
If your solder points are good it might need flashing
I think pre-tinning the pads might be better.
Better flux and maybe higher heat and less time on the pads would work no actual need to tin pads like wires.

Question, why you didn't use double sided tape with a heatsink type of heat disipation, but instead you've use Kapton tape which we use to move the heat away from something? In this case it will hold the head more and that's an additional reason for this SSD to fail.
What kind of tape do you recommend, got an Amazon link?
@@hterra2706 it's my personal account here, but will answer. I use the same tape as I use for the backlight for the TV repairs. They are heat resistant. At least more than the regular double sided tape.
Is kapton tape a must? I bought myself a soldering kit that came with electrical tape, but I'm assuming kapton is the way to go.
is it necessary to use tin with lead?
Ziemlich einfach. Vielleicht werde ich auch meine Switch umbauen.
Will this work on any switch? And do you have to specifically use kapton tape, or can it be any type of tape?
This works on v1/v2, there is a lite and oled version, I have an oled video due soon.
The tape is to secure against shorts, other electrical tape could work but might be thicker?
Can I get a link to this chip please link provided doesn’t seem to work
Will you make an oled tutorial also? Is it a lot harder? This seems to be doable myself.
I haven't got one unfortunately, if I get one it will be instantly modded!
@@fixingmoddingbuildinghow much would it cost to have you mod an OLED or me?
Sorry for the late comment, just seeing this. The linked rp2040 seems to not come with any fw installed. Did you use hwfly nx or do you recommend something else?
Everyone I have bought from different sellers have all come pre installed?
Interesting, it may have only been my unit or maybe the listing changed. I ended up just flashing it with fw_2.73.uf2 and it worked fine. Thanks for the video!
Great video man, how hard would you say this is to do? I only have a bit of soldering experience
Bit of practice beforehand and you should be ok, the caps are small but if you can zoom in with a camera it really is pretty simple!
I had no idea this mod was so easy.. I never looked into anything other than oled and lite and those (especially the lite) are super gnarly compared to this!! This mod is pretty easy the only warning I can give you is if you mess up the soldering on the capacitors under the GPU you sometimes Can get away without the little 0201 cap and the switch will keep working, you’ve just gotta do some stability testing after so if you do knock one of the caps off and loose it OR don’t have a fine tip soldering iron/heat station you might be able to just solder without the cap in
i did picofly without microscope and im amateur first ever chip and done it ;d this thing on video is so easy you can do it for sure

Hi, i've seen this video and i've decided to modify my switch. I have a v1 patched. Is it the same model in this video? Would i do everything like in the video?

Hello! And great video!
I was wondering since Ive jailbroken my switch with the jig and all that, would it be ok to just put the chip in and keep the same SD card and it’ll boot up that way instead of having to use the jig? Thanks!
Not sure what you are asking? You only need a jig on v1 Switch's that dont need a mod chip, if you install a mod chip it does not need a jig its boots to cfw.
@@fixingmoddingbuilding yea I’m terrible at explaining it, but yes I do have a V1 and am tired of using the jig when I do need to.
@@Beej6290 it's ok, you can install something called a trinket that can do it for you but I've never installed one myself so don't know much more 👍
Quick question about this install, does the FW need to be flashed first or does it come pre-installed? I bought one and the FW was not present on it, won't light the led when connected to PC, and generally shows no signs of life.
When I installed it, I metered all points, and all looks good, but when it turns on, it just boots to stock FW, and runs fine, but no HB. Just wondering if I needed to flash it, or if my chip is just dead.
