Understand this, when us old metal heads see the younger generation dig into and enjoy the music of our youth, it brings such a big smile to our faces. For that, I say thank you. Thank you for being a young, open minded human being. Bless you brother. My only words of advice are, keep digging. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏿🤘🏿
Recently found Metallica and I love One, Sad But True, Master of Puppets and Nothing Else Matters! Will try more of their songs for sure. Never thought I would love metal so much haha

100% this. He reminded me exactly how I felt when I first heard the song. Shock and awe. Speechless. Loved the video

Sooo underrated comment
I like how he just stops moving and like wtf trying to figure it out
Underrated comment. By a long shot.
Fun fact: the drum and guitar solo just before the “darkness imprisoning me” part was morse code for “death” or “kill me” ^^
I've heard that as well! Amazing
That fact is not fun
The music video is from a movie/ true story of a soldier so badly wounded he bobbed his head in Morse code for kill me over and over and over again til he died
@@almondbuddy2181 🤣
I thought that morse code part was in the MV and not in the song
When you hear slow beginning on a rock song, just remember it's a trap.
What about Wind of change or Bohemian Rhapsodie?
@@snd47flyer I meant 'its a trap' in a positive sense. What I meant is if a rock song has a slow beginning, then it's about to blast.
Isnt this Heavy metal ?
@@terencehill9042 Heavy metal is also a subcategory of rock.
totally agree!
You feel it because the artist is feeling it when he's playing it. Music is a language with all the inflection and nuance of any language.

Well said sir

Lovely words, cheers from Uruguay in south america
Sooo fucking true, people today don’t understand music is communicating emotional messages to the fans and that’s why it hurts when record companies produce copy and paste beats to the ducking audience with no soul no emotion other words no communication not enriching anyone’s life but their self THATS WHY MODERN POP IS SOULESS
One of Metallica’s finest songs, I love how “One” starts off slowly, builds up and then just explodes.
the transition is just so good and the last part is one of the best pieces of thrash metal ever created imo

“Landmine has taken my sight”

@@dryder7078 hell yes!
song is about a soldier who stepped on a landmine and he lost everything, his sight, legs arms, even took his speech, his hearing.
so basically hes trapped in himself and they wont let him die, scientists are experimenting on him and hes wishing for death but cant communicate.
and its actually a true story.

Greatest live video of all time
Yesssss!!🔥🤯
Nothing like thousands of Russians chanting "Die" over and over
“I thought this was a love song”
*talks about how he’s suffering and wants to die*
This song is based after a film called Johnny got his gun, has a meaning and they ain’t just in the studio fuckin around.
*book* I know there’s a movie but they based this song off the book
Exactly. It's why the official music video has clips from the movie in it. It goes along with the overall story of the song.
Lol I did a bunch of “haha”s when I heard Him say love song😂
Its just a soldier that was struck by a landmine and can't use the nerves correct. Can speak, hear, move, or touch. He uses morse code to speak to the doctors testing on him.
Until you see them in the studio and realize they are half way fucking around and pop out genius. Least nowadays
This song is about a soldier. My son survived 2 bombings in Afghanistan, bless every last one of our troops.
Thank your son for his service!
Don't get me wrong, but your son should have never been there in the 1st place. F our corrupt government. They accomplished nothing in that excrement pit hole afshitstan.
God bless!
@@babylonking9896 Excuse me, but he's an adult, he made this choice. Did I want him there, hell no. You sorta sound like I let him go over there, not the case. All for guarding oil and poppies? Fuck that.
Yes and no.The song does sing about a soldier and how it left him like a prisoner in his own body. However,James wrote the song from his bad childhood. His dad left his family at age 13,and his mom died shortly after that from cancer pretty much leaving him on his own
The story of a soldier hit by a landmine... He's desperation, his anger, his pain, his fear... So intense and breathtaking. One of my favourite songs ever
Your look at the ending riff is priceless.
He's dumbfounded,... But thats the best part

7:35 "what happened to the original plan?" That literally sums up the entire premise and point of view in this song. That feeling you got in that moment, THAT is what this song is all about. Think of the layout as the slow groggy waking up from the anesthesia, awake but blind, no memory of how you got there, feeling only the tubes in every hole and every vein. You start to remember things a bit faster and at 7:35, that confusion about your life in that moment happens as everything floods back. While you rock out to the rest of the song, the One is paralyzed while feeling that exploding anger and pain. And just wants to die, while you are happy to have lived through that glorious music. Hope you had a good Memorial Day.
I want to like this but it's at 69...
Actually, the song is about ww1. (See my comment for explanation)
I’m a rap producer that stumbled across Metallica recently. I’m speechless 😶 these dudes are Gods
The best rock group ever
I haven’t heard a bad song yet
Imagine thinking One was going to be a slow ballad... Pre-"Black album" Metallica was a completely different beast.
black album sucks ass just sayin
everything before it not so much lol
How did you think this was going to be a ballad??????
Also this is a ballad in the same way Sanitarium and Fade are. It's a totally different sound and shit but it follows the same sort of formula.
For sure, you should be one of those who stopped listening to Metallica when the black album came just coz it was international successful. It seems
I disagree the black album was a great album in and of itself. Of course it was different from everything that they had done before it but that doesn't make it bad.
Your comments about feeling the song on the inside, without hearing any words, is actually really apt. You know that mainline rock music is based on blues, and that metal is based largely on classical... think Beethoven, Mozart, etc. So the instrumentals are designed to evoke certain emotions, the same way they did it in the 18th and 19th centuries. Genius is the right word. These guys are masterful composers.
Good point! I sometimes wonder how the legendary classical composers would have reacted if they somehow could have heard some of Metallica's classics. I think they would have really dug it.
Am I Evil is a classical piece by Holst called "Mars" (I think)
I’m 44, I was into rock music in the 80’s as a kid but this song changed everything. Without a doubt at some point I made the connection with the classical music and what Metallica was doing being in that structure..length, change ups and that feeling the music brings out. Hey I grew up watching Tom N’ Jerry and Looney Toons cartoons..I was broken into classical music properly. Songs such as the Hungarian Rhapsody and the Barber of Seville never get skipped when they come up in the shuffle on my iPod. 😉🤘🏻😬
Metal is still based largely on blues
Funny I’ve always felt that metal was like classical! I grew up playing the classical on the piano. Most people look at me like I’m nuts when I say that though. I think they have just never listened to classical music. Lol
I was 17 when this came out.
I’m 50 now, this is mine.
And yours, it makes me happy to hear the younger generation swing. You said it, you feel it.
You look as floored as I was when this hit

“Harvester Of Sorrow” absolute banger!!
Absolutly. Even better watching in live with Russians going insane.
@@johnwray393 i prefer a bunch of 1980’s seattlites going crazy over it but the russians are cool too
Blackened and harvester 🤘
My absolute favorite Metallica song
"Harvester Of Sorrow" and "One" are the songs that you kinda have to read between the lines at least that's what I believe.
Sir. You were not brought up with rock or metal. But your analysis is way beyond your years and I am beyond impressed. I believe you have talent inside you that you don’t even know about. You were so introspective. Keep up the great work and keep believing in yourself.
Right on point!!
Absolutely. I noticed because I’ve been brought up listening to Metallica my whole life as well as other classic bands thanks to my parents but I never have been able to dissect their songs as well as he does at least not on my first time listening thats for sure! But this band is insane for people who are into understanding the music they are listening to!
"Our thoughts aren't linear."
Very deep, brother.
Jo Jo,
You dont know how this warms an old man's heart.
First, I trust YOUR response to music more than someone I cant see who writes for some rag magazine.

Now you know how we felt hearing Metallica, Maiden, Priest,.....for the first time.
Sweet!!
Keep it up!
You're real!

It's my favorite thing about the metal genre is that like folk music and country and the blues is the way they tell a story. Metal just does it harder, deeper, and faster.
That's what she said😂😂😂
And way fuckin louder \m/
I disagree about deeper, but harder and louder for certain, and Metallica is my absolute favorite band.
There's some chicken pickers that shred just as fast as anyone... With just a little overdrive and a telecaster 😉

Once again. You are hitting the meanings and interpretations of these amazing songs without even realizing it. I love watching you expand your universe of great talent. You should be proud to have all these wonderful people helping you find the best.
This song is metallica's masterpiece imo. Ive saw ppl cry while hearing this because of what its about it. If a song can make you feel some kind of way like that its brilliance. This album is their best work imo also. And justice for all was so raw and angry. It was when they were pissed off at the world and rightfully so. This was purely for cliff and they did an excellent job keeping his legacy alive with this album. Where ever cliff is, he smiles any time a song from ajfa is played
Personally I think the video might have helped his understanding more- just my opinion-✋🏼
I agree. The landmine verse especially. A lot of ppl miss that part.
Very much so

I agree. This song hits a lot harder when you see the whole message behind it played out before you.
I agree. For some reactors it hinders understanding as they get so distracted and don’t pay attention to the lyrics, but I don’t think Jojo would have had that problem. Definitely should watch the video too now.
Can you please do “For Whom the Bell Tolls”?
Live day on the green 85👌🏾
He did that one the day before

Jojo, this is based on a movie called "Johnny Get Your Gun." He gets hit by a landmine and it leaves him without hearing, sight, and limbs. He's just a torso. The doctors are keeping him on life support. He begs a nurse to let him die and she does.
Why do people keep saying it was a landmine? It wasn't a landmine, It was a artillery shell that landed beside him in his fox hole. The song is based off the movie.
@@VenomousJack ok and this bothers you why? Lol
@@beckyleavitt7808 I didn't mean any disrespect and your not the only one that said it. If people are going to give out Information, give out the correct information. I've read the book 4 times and seen the movies over 20 times nothing mentioned about landmines. I just don't know where people got that from. Sorry if I sounded disrespectful
@@VenomousJack They got it from the lyric where Metallica literally says”Landmine has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing”,etc. How can you blame people when they only know the lyrics in the song?
@@pathatfield2543 Then its a error of the song writer. In the video shows the bomb dropping on him.
This song IMO is one of the deepest and most memorable pieces of music I can think of, especially if you have seen the video and known the story it tells it is deep and dark. The musicianship is IMO untouchable, Metallica at their absolute peak for me...this is an epic in both lyrical and musical levels. There is a reason this band is a legend, regardless of what came out before or after when a band writes a song of this caliber...
It's just a regular guitar. YOU can play the first few notes of the song. If I can play it, you can play it. I'm trash on the guitar, but that was the first lick I learned.
Yeah, I started learning guitar a week ago and I can do it. I’m trying to learn the symphony of destruction riff rn.

I love how genuine you are. You’re a good guy.
As a musician, I can tell you what seems "impossible " is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. It's just like anything else- you gotta put the work in!
I love how he said the beginning of the song was a love song🤣😂
You've just discovered Metallica's approach to epic songs. Intro - lyrics - verse - music - more lyrics - verse - solo your life away.
This song is so iconic, it will forever stand the test of time!!!!
The insane part is that they are able to play this stuff live for 2 hours straight for over 40 years now
I love seeing people of different genres appreciating and acknowledging the true talent and these bands and just enjoying music for itself respect to you my man
JoJo, watch the official video! There's a jamming version which doesn't cut out the jam session at the end. You don't necessarily have to do a reaction to it (though it would be pretty dope) but you have to watch it to put the song in a greater context. It's a great music video and the visuals will blow you away. It might actually make you cry, just because of what's presented in it but it also shows the band performing the song. I think you'll really enjoy it. Can't go wrong with watching any Metallica music video, they put out amazing stuff! Keep up the good work, my friend. Great vibes!
Reactions which watch the official video with added lyrics are best for most Metallica, especially One.
I agree the official video puts more perspective to the lyrics
After this song immediately listen to “Disposable Heroes “ ties in together. Thanks for listening 👍
Love to see you Appreciating this Genre of music 🎶 when people don't know anything about rock music and then they start listening to it they see And feel what people that already listen to it feel, and start really liking it, so awesome, much love❤💯
I love how when the "Darkness inprisoning me...." part came he just stopped like "WTF am I listening to" but when that fast downpicking part came back and Lars (the drummer) started going wild he got back to the wibe. Legend
That look you had at Kirks solo, that was the look I had the first time I heard it. 25 years ago.
The guitar solo is by far the most emotionally intense part of any rock/metal song for me.
Not my favorite metallica song but maybe my favorite reaction of yours. You got into it more than I can recall you doing in prior metal vids. As an old metal head, I get great joy when someone hears a metal song for the first time and actually feels and experiences it. Nicely done young man!
Idk if it's just me, but the music video makes it a lot better. I get goosebumps in certain parts, and i think the video adds to the affect.
So cool watching people enjoy a Metallica song for the first time. They are geniuses, you said it perfectly. Hearing their instrumental portions or fills is like hearing another language. It makes you feel something beyond words.
7:40 it definitely did not talk about love at all
It's like he only absorbs 10% of the lyrics lol, digging it though
Yeah the video would have done him justice here.
He puts the lyrics up on the screen, but is he not reading them during the reaction? The lyrics are pretty self explanatory.
sorry if this is wrong but isnt this about an quadruple amputee soldier?
@@ksj2936 he lost his arms, legs, ears, lower jaw and eyes
It's a sin to listen to this without grasping the concept. Personally, I would have suggested you watched the official video as you never read the lyrics. It's fantastic that you appreciate the structure and arrangement of the music but I would have thought you would have also been interested in the lyricism (bars). Much of the genius of rock and metal is passing you by
The video butchers the song
@@ZRockReady no IT DOESN'T , THE VIDEO IS BASED ALL AROUND THE CLIPS OF THAT BLACK AND WHITE MOVIE *Johnny Got His Gun*

@@ZRockReady on the contrary...the video fits the narrative of the song.
As a Metallica fan for many years, I find that I'd rather listen to the song without the video. However, I all ready know the lyrics by heart and I understand the concept of the song. My comment was trying to consider a rap fan that doesn't have my experience of Metallica...to try and help Jo Jo. One bad ass song. I am so happy you played this song my favorite
Thank you for helping your generation appreciate metal!
Every single person who listens to One is blown away by it, and rightfully so. The first time I heard this song as a kid I couldn't believe how great it was.
There's really nothing wrong with the video. It gives context for the song that sometimes the instruments may distract from. While that may sound blasphemous to Metal fans, it's true for this song. It's a very lyrically-driven song until the last few minutes, hence why they gave this song their first music video and bought the rights to the movie adaptation of the book Johnny Got His Gun which the song is based off of.
To put it shortly, it's about a man who goes to fight in World War I only to get blown up by a landmine and losing all of hi limbs, sight, and hearing. All he can do is feel and all he feels is pain. He's stuck in a hospital bed with no purpose to live at this point and he tries to get the doctors to put him out of his misery so he doesn't have to live the rest of his life as an armless, legless, deaf and blind freak, but they refuse.
I am pretty sure it is based off the Vietnam war since you can hear the helicopter before the song starts but other than that you are on point. They didnt have helicopters in WWI and didny really have them in WWII
