I don't see anyone mentioning this in the comments, so I'll let you know: that sound that seems like a lead guitar in the beginning is actually the bass player Cliff Burton. The man was revolutionary for the way he played the bass guitar.

"For whom the bell tolls" is the title of a novel by Ernest Hemingway. It is about the spanish civil war in the 1930s. There was this fascist dictator Franco on the one side and the republican resistance on the other. Hemingway himself was there on side of the resistance and he probably knew what he was writing about. But in the end Franco won with help of Hitler and his airforce , the Luftwaffe.
The title means " the one who dies and for whom the (funeral) bell tolls then"

I'm late to the Megadeth party by a long shot, but the more I hear of them, the more impressed I am...and I've learned to accept Dave's peculiar vocal style. They've delivered more of what I want to hear than Metallica from 1990 onward. As for being a fan, my view is that one is a fan of one band, one team, etc., and likes others. I'm an Iron Maiden fan, but I like Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Anthrax, Helloween, Mastadon, Iced Earth, and Sepultura. Plus some others.

So the "bells" sound that you get at the beginning is not in fact bells. Lars Ulrich (Drummer) hit a large anvil with a hammer to create that iconic sound. The guitar you hear starting about 1:04 is Cliff Burton - their bass player who passed just 2 years and 1 album after this was released.

~Y’know that iconic bell sound at the beginning? It isn’t actually a bell. That’s drummer Lars Ulrich thwacking an anvil at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen. As producer Flemming Rasmussen recalled:
“We had an anvil in the studio, and Lars had to bang that; it could’ve been that or from a record of sound effects. But there was a really heavy, cast-iron anvil and a metal hammer, and we stuck them in an all-concrete room. He’d just go wang.”

I am a guitarist and been so for over 30 years
YOUR DAD IS A SMART MAN
There are those that understand guitar and there are those that don't
      YOUR DAD UNDERSTANDS
There is a time in every guitarist's journey when you get good enough (as your dad said... Make the guitar sing), at which point you sort of accidentally get caught up in the music and you close your eyes and the music takes you to a place
and in that place , You forget that you're playing, you forget that you have fingers and a fretboard, it's a place OF FEELING, and in that place Nothing matters except the music and what you can feel (and that is probably as literally as i can explain it without a person actually going there to experience it )
if you can't get the guitar to sing, if you can't get yourself to that play , You're not a guitarist..... Not really
Until it happens, you're a person with a guitar who is just hitting a few frets in sequence to produce a tune
but when you get there.. YOU UNDERSTAND and after it happens. it's not the same
Like i said... YOUR DAD UNDERSTANDS
FYI...... Why are you talking about your father in Past Tense ?
is your dad not with us anymore ?

As some people had pointed out, the novel is based upon the great novel written by Ernest Hemingway (that you should read!). The novel title was inspired by a poem written by John Donne (which shows up in The Walking Dead videogame). Here you have it:
    No man is an island,
    Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
    A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
    Or of thine friend's were.
    Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
    Therefore, send not to know
    For whom the bell tolls,
    It tolls for thee.

I could hear Waylon Jennings one song and DJ Quick or the Spice Girls next. This is not bragging, just making a point that I personally don't understand someone who is a music fan sticking to mostly just one genre. I like whatever song gets to me. Pretty much every genre has a song that can do that. And on the flip side, there is no genre that I like everything from.

I was your age when this came out.
Metal was the militia of the youth. For whom the bell tolls means when it's your time to die you die. Through the ages time marches on.
These songs are played is the surge or blitz screen of an attack in battle. They were fascinated with death and concentrated it. But thrash metal or marsh is militant in nature already outside the hair bands. Depends if you wanted a great workout you match out but if your with your chick your probably both listening to hair bands. Our social media back then was very social in person meet ups. Work hard work out harder then play hard.

Just a heads up with these heavier songs (especially in Metallica’s case) the instruments are supposed to be the main part of the song where the singing compliments it, where as in rap the focus of the song is usually on the rapping/singing. Also with Metallica their songs are a template to playing live and they always play better live (in short listen to Metallica live). Metallica are also not trying to embarrass other bands they are just making music that they love and they have done so well because they always go above and beyond with their songs.

Bro - again - maximum respect - you have more of a musician in you than a lot of musician i know. You instantly recognize great harmonies and also song structures. A lot of "musicians" are not able to do that. They do not understand music. You do. So you really have more of a musician in you than such "musicians"(they call themselves musicians but they are not).
Respect bro. You are more of a musician than you know by yourself. You just never explored it, maybe because the lack of possibilities, but you have a intuitive understanding of music. And thats what good and talented musicians have.

the guitar part you sang, is an arpegio using triplets(playing 3 notes evenly spaced in the time it usually takes to play 2 notes). one of its many uses(whole sections in only triplets) is to convey conflict.

The songs about soldiers and war. “Blackened roar, massive roar, fills the crumbling sky” is the sounds of warfare and it’s also shown in “Stiffened wounds test their pride”
