It for sure is a difficult music video to watch. Fact that the man is in torment, cannot see, cannot hear, and no limbs due to the savages of war. Being stuck where he is with only his mind able to think....but cannot speak out loud to ask for his misery to end. I would not wish that on anyone. The way that Metallica wrote the song is beautiful, terrifying, emotional and brilliant. Why do I say that? Because the song make you feel no matter what style of music a person is into. Also I think James Hetfield is one of the most underated vocalists....he is amazing!

      Even worse
Euthanasia is completely illegal so even if they could hear him
They would force him to suffer through it
I assume many people have been forced to suffer through it
Even people in accidents, doesn't have to be war
But obviously this happens to soldiers probably more than any other way of life
When I say I respect soldiers, this is why...
The risk they face, the fact they are just thrown in to public without the skills to survive in the public (a lot of the time)
In England, it seem like almost 25% of our homeless
      Drug addicts
      Are actually ex military
Who couldn't adapt to the real world
Or suffer serious PTSD and don't get the support they needed
      It's horrific mate ✌️👊

@@darrenweston1618 It's fucking sad dude....Truly! I have a friend here in the U.S. who is a Veteran of the First Iraqi War....
He's shared so much with me of things that are absolutely Horrendous. Yet, there are certain stories, certain things he won't even reveal "to me" somebody who he has already confided so much with.....Of all the things I've already heard, I can only imagine the things he won't share.....
It's so Horrifying to know that our Vets (no matter where they are from) have to live with such horror(s)......
And, now this video...this song.....about a guy who, like many of our young naive folk today, give their lives in name of Honor and Country......this is WW One.......long LONG before Euthanasia was even considered (as you pointed out) and they finally find out he is Conscious AND Suffering beyond imagining.....yet, it takes someone to break the norm......to give him Peace......
Jesus, I remember when we/I were young and this came out. I was 17 when this came out. In less than One Week, we broke are cassette of this album, we listened to it over and over and over.......it was (and is) a Revolutionary Album.....Both with this song and with how Metallica Moved Music.........

As a retired Soldier, a combat veteran who has lost brothers, this song always gets to me. I was a soldier, as was my father before me and his father before him. All the way back to the French and Indian War (1754). I remember when I was really little and My dad came back from his last tour in Vietnam, I asked him why did he fight. He just smiled at me and never gave me an answer. Later on I enlisted in the U.S. Army. I first served with the 1stBN (ABN) 75th(RGR). A few years later I made it through the interview and went through the Special Forces Q Course. I spent 28 years in the teams, I have shot and been shot at. I've been wounded on 3 different occasions, and have seen some things that no one should ever see. About 7 years ago my father passed away from cancer. A few days before he died, I reminded him of the time when I was little and asked him again. Why did we fight? He smiled and told me that soldiers do what they are trained to and called to do, in the hopes that one day there will no longer be a need for us. My dad said that one day, maybe the world will become to smart for war.

I lost a total of 12 Brothers during my time in the USMC infantry. All of them passed away before the age of 25, and many of them never reached 20. Physically, even though I am now 54 I push myself hard in the hopes that if there is an afterlife they can somehow experience my accomplishments through me because their stripped chance of experiencing something similar is what motivates me. Every time I do anything of significance, I pause for a moment to silently call out to them in an inner voice that I hoped they enjoyed it, and to tell them that they are my heroes.

Thank You Empress for putting yourself though the pain and sorrow this song brings to anybody with empathy. Yes, the poets within some heavy metal have been victimized by those that wish their voices of compassion silenced for a long time now. Sometimes screaming is appropriate. This song/video is just one of many reasons Metallica will stay the test of time. I noticed your reaction in the beginning to the line "For democracy, any man would give his only begotten son." Powerful.
May I suggest "For Whom The Bell Tolls"? Metallica did a huge album with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and it shows very well how metal and classical music can unite peacefully. Peace/JT

He lived, but wanted to die. they wanted to keep him hidden so he could not be used to advocate against the war. At the end he wants the guns turned on those that make these wars. Your reaction was truly beautiful.

Actually, he did not die, he di wish he had died, though. He was begging to be allowed to die and they kept him away. The nurse wanted to help him, by putting an end to his suffering.
