one of the most impactful scenes (that most people miss) is the final one. It shows those at home toasting and singing, moving on with life while the wounded veterans are shuffled into the back room out of site and forgotten about.

This song was inspired by the 1971 independent movie "Jonny Got His Gun", which in turn was based by the book "Jonny Got His Gun". It was an anti-war novel set during the first World War. The movie was directed by the novel's writer.
Metalica actually bought the rights to this movie so they could continue to show sceens of it as they preform "One" live in concert without having to worry about compensation.

The movie was based on the book Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo about WW1. It was one of three books banned for Allied troops to read during WW2. The other two were enemy propaganda. The author was criticized/hated for being defeatist. Not so, just realistic. I believe the title was an ironic reference to an upbeat movie called Johnny Get Your Gun. (Maybe Annie Get Your Gun.)

Kids then had a small collection of bought full albums, singles, or mixtapes made from radio recordings. If you wanted to hear a song you didn't have on cassette there was no youtube or spotify to find it. We listened to the radio and if the DJ was taking requests we could call in to the station, hope we could get through, request a song then huddle around the radio waiting for it to come on. The other option was watching MTv (they actually played music back then). I remember my dad explaining this video (One) to me when the song debued because I didn't get all the symbolism. Shortly after that I mowed a few lawns in the neighborhood to earn money and pops took me to the record store to buy the Metallica And Justice For All cassette.

I think you were right to follow the story of the song and I could see it on your face during the video. Many songs are more than just the music, the context is important. For example Comfortably numb by Pink Floyd or Hurt by Nine inch nails as well as the.cpver version by Johnny Cash. In the latter case it's basically the same lyrics and melody with some minor adjustments to reflect the differences between Trent Reznor writing it from his perspective and experiences when he was in his late 20s IIRC, whereas Johnny Cash's cover is made from the perspective of someone at the end of his life.
Also, Trent Reznor works a lot with sounds/noise in his music in different ways, so in Hurt there's this kind of static in the background which represents the void, and the distorted sounds are there for a reason as well as how he intentionally breaks musical "rules" and avoids a release after build up in some places. All to make the listener feel a bit uncomfortable since that's part of the song and feeling he's trying to communicate.

I don't know if any of you have seen the movie "Johnny got his gun". If not I strongly recommend that you do but I warn you now, it's very disturbing. Metallica did a great job in describing the "true" horrors of what WW1 was like. Trust me, I've have seen things that when I was younger no kid should ever see.
I have family that live near Verdun, France. (which is like America's version of Gettysburg) There is an ossuary near the town of Douaumont and I've seen skulls of unknown solders, there are areas of that part of France called "Zone Rouge". You are not allowed to visit it because there are still unexploded landmines, bombs, human and animal remains. Some of the ground in "Zone Rouge" is still contaminated with traces of chemicals that were used during WW1. If you haven't been to that area of France, I suggest you do but be prepared with what you will see because it mirrors exactly what it's like in this Metallica video. It's not pretty.
Even though I can only imagine what it was like during WW1, but with this video that Metallica did coupled with what I've seen visiting my family in Verdun, seeing the relics and artifacts first hand. Trust me when I say that "this hits home" and on some occasions it still hurts.

Metallica made the song based on the book. When they decided to make a video for it they found out that a movie had been made based on the book. They started getting clips from it and found that it was cheaper to buy the rights to the whole movie than to pay per clip, so they did. Now if you buy a physical copy of the movie this video is included with it.

The concept for the song came from a dream that Hetfield had, based on being a brain and nothing else. He described the dream to Cliff Burnstein who in turn suggested that he read the novel, "Johnny Got His Gun". After they decided to create a music video (their very first) they decided that instead of paying royalties for the use of the movie, "Johnny Got His Gun," they purchased the rights to the entire movie.
