The song was based off of a Novel/movie called Johnny got his gun. It's about a soldier that was hit by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. Left In hospital, with basically a fate worse than death. He lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He's fully conscious but unable to communicate, and unable to tell the difference between a dream and the waking world.
They wrote the song based off of the book. When they decided to make a music video (their first) they then found out there was a movie based off the book so they decided to used clips from the movie. They were going to pay on a per clip basis then found it was cheaper to buy rights to the entire film.
That's what I was gonna say. The next Metallica song he reacts to should really be Fade to Black. Especially with how much he seems to like guitar solos.
Dude, I don't want you to ever stop making content, but the right person is gonna see you and you're gonna go on to bigger and better things. You're an entertaining mother fckr!
Such a good song. Also, the film clips in the video are from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun". The song was based on the novel of the same name that the movie was adapted from.

And it's been so long that a lot of the times I just don't react this way to them anymore. Watching you puts the spark back into the songs for me. Thank you sir.

I still react to this song the way you did after countless listens. Even the sigh at the end. 😂 It is my favorite song. It's a banger, musically beautiful, intelligent, and emotional. ❤❤❤
I am a life-long metalhead largely due to this song and video. This is the feeling I'm chasing and it's still one of my top 10 favorite songs. Folks talk some shit on Metallica and a lot of the time they're right to, but you'll never hear anyone disrespect this song.
This is Metallica's masterpiece. They have more famous songs, but they don't have better songs. "One" is Metallica's "War Pigs" and "Enter Sandman" is their "Paranoid".
When my dad took me to baseball practice during middle school he had an OG iPod that have 140k songs on it and battery was the very first song I ever heard from Metallica on purpose. I’ve now been playing guitar for 11 years because of that one day. James Hetfield is a god in metal
You gotta check out Fade to Black next, it’s their best song IMO. And if you ever feel the desire to give it a second chance, I promise you the solo on Master of Puppets is just as incredible as this.
Dude. Cutting 'Master Of Puppets' was unfair.. but don't apologize if you aren't feeling it. I love 'Schism' by Tool, you didn't like it. All 82 thousand of your followers respect your honesty
Funny because Killing in the Name is the least interesting song rage put out. The whole song is the repeating of 3 or 4 phrases. Rage has so many deeper, more complex, more entertaining songs.
The first time I saw this video I was about 9 years old, staying up late watching Headbangers Ball. After a bunch of hair metal, this song comes on. 35 years later, I’m still a metalhead because of this song.
I'm in a metal band. It's not the 90's anymore and I have arthritis in my knees, but I'm still doing it. Your video reminded me of the first time I saw that video.
One of my favorite parts is near the end, when the soldier seems most trapped in the memories and PTSD- the drums and guitar firing in bursts sound just like gunfire to me. It's so fucking well done and well played
The bass on this album is basically just matching the rhythm guitars. Nothing especially crazy, to be honest. I never minded the mix, personally. The multi-tracked guitars just carry so much weight to me. Newstead is a damn good bassist, though fr. He's the architect of a ton of great bass lines for Metallica.
The mix is divisive, but it changed music at the time and I love the sound of the album. If anyone really wants the truth, however, go listen to “…and Justice for Jason”. He played his ads off on the album and Lars buried it.
@@cjonesufc exactly. I personally don't like the lack of bass and the thin sounding drums, especially the bass drums. It did, however, set a trend in the years to come. Vinnie Paul had kind of the same sound on the early Pantera albums.
Let’s go Rob!!! There’s 2 guitarists in Metallica- James hetfield and Kirk Hammett. James is the rhythm guitarist and Kirk is the lead guitarist meaning Kirk played the cool guitar solo near the end (as for the rest of the guitar it’s a mixture of them both im not sure whose part is whose though). James hetfield is also the singer. Lars Ulrich is the drummer. During this time their bassist was Jason Newsted although interestingly I believe they muted his bass on every song of this album. So I don’t think this song has any bass although it was originally supposed to.
IIRC, the bass tracks weren't muted entirely, but it was decreased to a level where you essentially couldn't hear it over the guitars. You might be able to catch a few weird noises in Dyers' Eve and Shortest Straw that are actually the bass, if you're paying attention!
Welcome to Metallica. Great reaction, couldn't wait for you to hear that solo. Definitely one of my favorite Metallica songs. You should checked out Fade to Black next

There are two songs I'd like to hear your opinions on, after this song. Hangar 18, by Megadeth; and Spit Out the Bone, by Metallica.
