CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Robert (Joseph Fiennes) pronounces his love for Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) during a dance, she reminds him that she will never belong to a man.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This British-made historical drama depicts the rise of young Elizabeth Tudor to Queen of England, a reign of intrigue and betrayals. In 1554, Queen Mary I (Kathy Burke) tries to restore Catholicism as England's single faith. With no heir to the crown, she maneuvers to keep her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) from succeeding her, but her efforts fail. With Mary dead, Elizabeth is proclaimed Queen of England in November 1558. Elizabeth relishes the return from exile of her childhood sweetheart, Lord Robert Dudley (Joseph Fiennes). Chief adviser Sir William Cecil (Richard Attenborough) urges the young Queen to forget personal matters and instead address the country's pressing problems. England is bankrupt, has no army, and is under serious threat from abroad. Elizabeth even has enemies within her own court, the most dangerous being the Duke of Norfolk (Christopher Eccleston). Hoping for an heir, Cecil suggests marriage candidates -- King Philip II of Spain or the French Duc d'Anjou (Vincent Cassel) -- to secure the realm. Elizabeth agrees to meet their ambassadors, but her true feelings are revealed when she meets Dudley for a secret tryst. French "warrior queen" Mary of Guise (Fanny Ardent) amasses troops at the Scottish border. Elizabeth bows to the pro-War lobby led by Norfolk, despite protests from her Master of Spies, the enigmatic Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush), but the decision to fight leads to a humiliating defeat. As dark clouds of court conspiracies gather, and the possibility of assassination looms, Elizabeth strikes out at her enemies and puts her trust in Walsingham. Shown at 1998 film fests (Venice, Toronto), this is the first English-language film of Indian director Shekhar Kapur, who shot on locations at Northumberland, Derbyshire, North Yorkshire, and at Shepperton Studios.

I don’t blame Elizabeth for not marrying..After all she grew up watching what her Father did to all of his wives.
Ya from The Tudors. I'm really thinking of watching this movie since it continue years later after the 4th and Final Season.
Natalie, that's a fair point but I think the example of her cousin Mary Queen of Scots was more significant. Mary had been knocked from pillar to post by the lousy men she chose.
Actually it was Thomas Seymour that eroded her trust in men to the point that she refused to marry. Thomas took inappropriate interest in her and wanted to become king by marrying her against her will and conspiring to dethrone Mary. This put Elizabeth in a lot of danger and she had no control of the situation. She never wanted to be in a situation like that ever again so she refused to marry anyone in fear that her agency and potentially her life would be snatched away from her due to the naked ambition of men.
Slicky Kid I want to watch it as well
If she married she would have lost all power to her husband as he would be king, which is above a queen.
i have never seen women's dignity and power being declared in better way than this. blanchett is amazing.

Her father called her that. That's why it made her so mad when he did it
Molly Shaw oh wow. I didn't know that. Did they have that in the movie? I haven't seen it.
She was always and only her father's Elizabeth. No one else had a claim on her.
She was like her mother, their ideas and independence were far too advanced for that period.
@@ZannaZatanna1 I think it was in the tudors series, when Anne was wearing yellow at Aragon's funeral. Elizabeth was a little girl and her father picked her up saying"ah my Elizabeth"

Elizabeth: my papa
Henry: my elizabeth
I love how, when she starts speaking loudly and gets angry..everybody in the Court is quite, music stops and all bow down at her passage. Love it.
@e causey he was a great warrior king and it's sad that his son couldn't hold on to friends after Henry V invaded it and took it. Henry V wouldn't have invaded friends if France didn't have people out trying to assassinate him the moment he got crowned King. Elizabeth was mild-mannered before she became Queen and once she was crowned she realized she had to be mean and toughen up. She looks so much like her father I don't see how he could have ever denied she was his!
Omar Pozzi Shes Henry’s child alright
If you understand the power shifts that swirled about a royal court, any action or word could have lethal consequences. Elizabeth understood this better than most as she spent most of her early years expecting the headsman's axe during her sister's reign.
Blanchett should have won the Oscar for this role. Look at this scene and pay close attention to the message in this scene. Women out there claim your own life and stop living it for someone else. And that is not an anti-man thing, but people, men and women need to stop living their lives for someone else and start living their lives for themselves.
amen. well said. I concur completely. I watched this clip purely for the pro-woman connotation in this scene. Kate Blanchett did a very good job!
She was great in Elizabeth, she was Elizabeth Tudor in this movie
i mean, she not only played role of a queen but she was her all the time....played with such passion and power
Eternally Light Then how the F@#$ did Paltrow the Oscar that year?!!! (rhetorical)
Paltrow was awful in this movie. Cate got robbed of Oscar also this year with Carol movie, such amazing performance
Can you believe it. cate blanchett in this film lost to gwyneth parltrow for shakespeare in love... gwyneth was good, but cate did the performance of that year. sometimes i do not know what those academy voters are thinking..... the biggest travesty i feel is when Ellen Burstyn lost for requiem for a dream to julia roberts. Ellen gave one of the best performance in a lifetime..
I agree, especially about Ellen Burstyn. Ellen actually raised acting to another level. A more recent Oscar travesty IMO was when Felicity Huffman lost out to Reese Witherspoon.
Julia Roberts should not even have been nominated when you look at her competition that year including, of course, Ellen Burstyn. Gwyneth should not have been nominated even when you don't look at her competition. Weinstein at his finest.
The academy accommodates the movers and shakers of the film industry (its membership base is made up of producers, directors, etc). Naturally, the academy is bias and favours the established actors and actresses over the unknown/the underdogs. They're also more likely to vote for someone that they've worked with in the past. My guess is that most of the academy members are American. The British royal family doesn't interest them as much as Shakespeare. Gwyneth is also American. Politics, it's everywhere.
Rhaegar Targaryen
YEA!!! i didnt mention that but that was terrible too... felicity was fantastic, real snub
Completely agree on both Cate and Ellen Burstyn! It's about being the "popular one" as the producers and managers pay a helluva money to the media, magazines, etc, the voters are being manipulated by that.
I love how Cate Blanchett got nominated for an Oscar twice, for playing the same role, in a series of movies. She's just that boss.
setheurovision94
Apart from Peter O’Toole, had that ever been done before?
@@aceharris1463 yes, 6 times in total but Cate is the only actress .

People think feminism is a new movement, it's been around for thousands of years.
This isn’t feminism lol. Elizabeth wasn’t equal with men, she ruled them.
@@Zamstein
agreed. feminism has never been about equality
@@prac2
Suffragettes disagree.
@@prac2 no feminism is trying to make men and women equal
Elizabeth, despite dabbling with some bits of the occult (see Dr John Dee) was a conservative Anglican and would’ve despised feminism in any of its forms along with other modern ideas such as Democracy.
omg this poor women; almost assassinated, finds out the man she loves is married, and then discovers her fiance's secret habit
i think she just broke at this scene but she is still so badass
oh don't forget her father cut off her mom's head, then he declared her a bastard child, then turned around and made her legitimate again... people in her court were betraying her, military commanders constantly disobeying her orders to suit their own egos, the kingdom was dirt shit poor, the king of spain (her ex brother in-law) attacked England, her first cousin conspired to kill her, the pope declared her a whore and a heretic and basically put a bounty on her head....and people wonder why she never married...she saw men at their worst everyday! But this chick defeated the spanish, found and killed all her conspirators, brought economic growth, and religious peace to england, inspired patriotism and established culture through the arts...the Elizabethan era is called the 'golden age' of england...bc she's a FUCKING BADASS!!!
Well, after putting up with Anjous antics, she must have been fed up with men in general at that point.
And don't forget she was sexually abused by her step-father. And the woman closest to her at the time, Katherine Parr, encouraged it instead of protecting her. She was only around 14 or 15 IIRC.
thalialuvmx 💞
ZannaZatanna1 There's no evidence of sexual abuse from Thomas Seymour, but it is believed that he used to harass her. And Elizabeth moved away from Catherine Parr's household, but continued to write to her tenderly, and so did Catherine to her, so I believe there was still love and respect between them. Some believe Elizabeth went away because Catherine made it happen, perhaps to protect her.
I will have one mistress here! And no master!
Related to wise words of:I am no mans Elizabeth!
She was a very high achiever, fluent both verbally and in writing of five languages by the age of 12. No man was going to assert themselves above HRH. She knew what was what 'in a man's world' at such a time, and she was very well aware ALL her mother sacrificed. Urpsurping the throne was never going to happen whilst her royal posteria graced it. She kept two momentums of her mother close by at all times, she held her mother, (probably for what she did for her daughter's legal shot of the throne) in very high esteem. It's intriguing but sad at the same time. Queen Elizabeth is to be admired for standing head to head with the Catholic religion, men and the monarchist, and all that those three entailed of that time.
She hated the Catholic religion. The Spanish Armada was destroyed on the rocks
HM*
*Mementoes*, not momentums. I'm not being pedantic, I'm sure it was a typo on your part.
It is said that the expression, "yaaasss queen!" originated because of this scene. I choose to believe this because Cate is just that awesome.
Elizabeth was my first Hollywood film. I had noticed an unknown girl called Cate Blanchett who I wanted to play Elizabeth. My agent said Studio wanted a star and if I kept insisting on an unknown actor, they will replace me. I said i had to go with my heart. The rest is history.

Not just her mother. He was a monster to 5 of his 6 wives and only because he died before he could kill the 6th
Not only that, she was alive to see what happened to katherine howard, and what was almost gonna happen to Catherine parr
I will have one mistress here, and no master... that is what I call a badass point
Words I live by. Don't help a man out too much because he's only distracting you from your purpose. He won't help you in the end. Dudley is the perfect example, he was only looking out for himself in the guise of protecting her. Pfft.
@@LisaMaryification Except you're just some loser on youtube like the rest of us. You're not a queen and you don't wield any influence or power.
If you look at the origin meaning of the word Virgin it meant to have no children or that's what the ancient definition was...and the to her word Elizabeth produced no child
It's no great amazement why Elizabeth never married. Not only did her father dispose of wives like napkins but she was in Catherine Parr's household when Catherine was married to Thomas Seymour. And behind her back, Thomas was trying to seduce the very young Elizabeth. Then there was her sister Mary. Mary married Phillip II of Spain who basically abandoned her and went back home. Elizabeth was very intelligent. She must have looked around and said why on EARTH should I marry? The smartest thing she ever did was not marry and rule alone with her very competent advisors. It's not called the golden age for nothing.
that's how I feel too!
This part was pivotal, She wasn't just talking to Robert. She was also declaring it to Norfolk, Sussex and that ambassador guy..... But, her strong voice when she says; "And No master!" is spine tingling! I love this film!
Powerful words from a great woman! She belonged to no man..I admire that about her.
So many women think they are feminists but cowtow to men inadvertently.
This is so random haha but I loved the gowns of this period 😍
I think the best period for good, elegant fashion was the Victorian era.

That’s a true queen right there. She bowed to no man and was so true to herself and her people, she gave everything for her people. If that doesn’t scream queen then I don’t know what does
Cate Blanchett is too beautiful. i admire her beauty
She was 17 years younger here...
+Alfredo Di Stéfano Laulhé And? She's still pretty.

@@thefbiiswatching9251 no, she had but that was make up 😂😂
She looks old
Elizabeth has put her foot down. She knows the Tudor Dynasty will end with her and she's fine with it because she knows *exactly* why everyone wants her to marry. It's not for an heir. It's for the control. And she's been under someone else's thumb for most of her life. Queenship gave her freedom and she'd damn anyone take that away from her. That's why she declares "I have *one* mistress"
It's a reminder to everyone that she's not her father who had several. She's like her grandfather: faithful to one thing above all else, even though it wasn't a woman she was faithful too.
What a baddass!
and Cate Blanchett is elegant, and for me, elegant is the only beauty that never fade.
You're right, she will still be stunning when she's in her 90s :)
Elizabeth is 1 of my role model , dont sacrifice your life for a men, they r just human like us, if u marry with him, dont be his slave but his partner n friend, n if he cant do it, then dont marry him at all
Wow 😮
A real Queen 👸,
“ I am no man’s Woman “!
She shouldve won an Oscar for this, I was too young when this movie came, and her face as Queen Elizabeth I will never forget.
Cate's appearance as Elizabeth is just so realistic. The portrait of Elizabeth of 16th century is so similar to her look. I felt I have reached to past 16th century."Golden era"
She absolutely captures that laugh. Something tells me she’s been there.
MOOD! “I will have one mistress here! And no master”!!
If you look at it closely, an independent woman doesn't need too marry.. Even for love.
And this is the performance that Gwyneth Paltrow won over?! Cate Blanchett is the true Oscar's best lead actress of 1999!
When you see your father execute 2 women, 1 of whom your own mother, and the way your power crazed father used women like meat, you would belong to no man either!
For all of her sins and harsh acts, E1 was still one of the most amazing Queens England ever had!
Yeah. Plus the reason why she got mad when he said my elizabeth is bs when She was litter girl, Henry actully played with her and always said "My Elizabeth."
Sorry for my bad english.

Elizabeth was probably the greatest Queen England had seen but she also put an end to the Tudor dynasty which I think was deliberate on her part.
It was her revenge on her father for killing her mother to have heir.
From Elizabeth to Galadriel to Hela, Cate Blanchett was born to play queens.

Her laugh and Dormer's laugh are so identical that if you watch the The Tudor and this movie you will definitely feel they are related.
Only in this clip do I clearly understand that 'mistress' is originally meant as an English term for a 'female-boss' and not so popularly confused these days as a 'keep woman' or a side-chick as they call in urban language.
One of the greatest if not the greatest women to have lived. Period.
I don't think most people understand just how pivotal her reign was. She not only stood by her father's break from the Church- and subsequent creation of the Church of England- but financed the exploration of the New World (America)-- which paved the way for the colonies, which resulted in the creation of the U.S., that stated in their break-away Constitution, "Freedom of Religion."

I never realised that Cate Blanchett assumed the part of Elizabeth twice, in two different movies ! Elizabeth and Elizabeth : the Golden Age. Was the latter conceived as a sequel ?
More evidences about Cate Blanchet should've won an oscar for Elizabeth
Such a powerful character by Cate❤️❤️
You go, girl.
Her depiction is wonderful. She started out as a young heir to the throne, clever but not experienced and putting entertainment and love before politics. The more she grows in the field, the more she realises love and trust is weakness, at least for her. And that's how she started gaining power and control, of herself first, then of her people. Even her speaking voice and gestures change during the film. She becomes more mature, respected and finally chooses power over love.
Poor little man. He loved her SO much, claimed to know her SO well...and yet...he NEVER saw this coming ? Pathetic.
You go Elizabeth you don't need a man to rule. And ironically the Kings were basically raised by women. Women dont need men. Anyway you go Elizabeth.

I have always felt a deep connection to this movie since it has come out. I've been married twice. After my first divorce, I waited 16 years before even thinking about marriage again because of the betrayals and heartache I have endured. I love watching this in childhood and her setting her boundaries to men.And now I grew up becoming Asexual woman
I like Cate Blanchetts portrayal of Elizabeth the best. Helen Mirren acted too hysterical and unstable as Elizabeth . Cate portrays Elizabeth with strength and integrity .
This is the point at which she has come to realize that she's been used - as Leicester's cudgel against his enemies and rivals; as her government's prop to protect itself against Spain and Rome. When she dances with Leicester here, she's making a statement that these people serve her, not the other way around and that not even Leicester would be safe from her wrath if he sets a foot wrong.
