@Confederate Media it was for England, and later the United Kingdom when her nephew took the throne after her death, she changed the country from been a back water small island off the coast of Europe into one of the most powerful countries on the planet
My history instructor said she was a tease and would make kings of other countries think she was going to marry them to get what she wanted. Sounds kind of Cleopatra-ish to me.
She played every suitor like a fiddle and retained her unmarried status for her entire reign. She was extremely intelligent and could outwit damn near anyone. Even Pope Sixtus V acknowledged her intelligence and the Spanish ambassador De Quadra, Bishop de Aquila, wrote to Philip II of Spain basically admitting that he could not manipulate her.
There are multiple reasons why she did this. She was pushed to get married because a monarch without a heir isn’t a true monarch. You can imagine what pressure she was on and if she stood up for herself she would be in big trouble since she could be easily replaced by Mary Queen of Scots
I read somewhere that that was the fashion at the time and women even plucked their hair! Its possible though that it went into fashion because of the queen.
I love her she commanded a royal army and navy, never married, used marriage as a strategic component to form alliances with never actually committing to it, and had lover boys on the side. This woman was incredible!
Her determination to remain independent her whole life impresses me. She was in love with a courtier, Rober Dudley, and it is said she had a weakness for handsome young men in her court. But even still, she forsook any relationship with either Dudley or any other man, and (arguably) never experienced sex. She must have felt very lonely at times, and this wasn't a time when women could have the equivalent of a "mistress" like men did, much less a regent queen. She was truly a determined, firm ruler.
@@nakeasimone13 Hey, just because it wasnt discussed and she didn't end up pregnant, doesn't mean she wasn't shagging folk. Extramarital sex was everywhere in Elizabethan England. Having kids out of wedlock (evidence of it) was the big issue.

What really impressed me is that she was so literate to the point of speaking welsh. A modern equivalent would be a polyglot american president who learned Navajo, which is more impressive coz she lived 500 years ago
The troops loved the heck out of her for it (her tougher personality). That Tilbury Speech is actually taught in public speaking courses to this day. "Good Queen Bess" was her nickname nationwide from what I've read.
Tenniel's inspiration for the Queen of Hearts (in the story of Alice in the Wonderland) was an image of Elizabeth de Mowbray, Duchess of Norfolk in one of the medieval stained glass windows at Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford, Suffolk.
All of the Kings, or in this case a Queen, controlled who their courtiers married. Marriages back then were made more as political and national alliances then for love. Elizabeth didn't start that practice.

@@fragolegirl2002 They are indeed different people but Mary had planned what was to become the English colonies before Elizabeth Pennywise landed in the throne.
Look, I like Weird History for trying to tell interesting stories, but what constantly makes me want to turn it off is the amazingly lazy job they do at fact checking and how they CONSTANTLY make it seem like the morals of today mattered back then. As for fact checking, or at least sloppiness, there's the moment where they say that when her dad died she took over the throne, like it was easy. It took a good amount of time and a few close calls with an executioner, for her to make it there. As for applying today's morals to these other time periods, Elizabeth was not a control freak for getting mad at her family or ladies in waiting for marrying without her consent. If they were in her service, then they were required BY LAW to get her consent. And if they were relations, same deal. Since everyone in the kingdom was technically her subject, and this is a feudal system so they owe her homage, her great magnets NEEDED to get her permission for marriage alliances because this included a lot of state policy, not just love. Same with Catherine Grey, she was actually in line for the throne (younger sister of Jane Grey, the 9 days queen), so this was a big deal. Elizabeth had hoped to leave that branch of the family to die, and by marrying and having children that produced contenders for Elizabeth's crown. See, this is actually a lot more complicated then her simply being vain and controlling. And THAT IS what makes a good story, not this dumbed down and version that's only purpose is to make the masses gasp at how insane things were back then. At least in this case, it's the equivalent to anti-trust laws now (no monopolies). People don't do crazy stuff just for the sake of doing crazy stuff, usually there's a cultural reason and if you choose to skip that just for the wow factor, then you do everyone a disservice by SKIPPING THE ACTUALLY WEIRD AND INTERESTING PARTS OF OUR HUMAN HISTORY. And that is just lazy clickbait.
I completely agree with you that those videos could be more elaborated but I think they are doing a pretty good job, overall, at synthesizing. Just like Kurtzgesat. It's not necessarily in depth, you're right, but it gives a good enough summary. That being said, thanks for your more in depth explanation; I really appreciated it.
Hm. True, lol. That's also how I kinda felt on some parts of the video since I did some research on Queen Elizabeth I back in high school. Since it's history, we're not meant to comment any personal opinions or at least try our darndest not to lol whenever we had to do essays or projects. Hopefully Weird History will consider this in the future. Maybe meet things halfway, keep some of the personal commentary but also talk more about how people were really like back then while considering their own set of morals/values and laws.

To be honest, while she suffered no fools, she was actually known for being calm-tempered in comparison to the rest of her family. For example, you have Henry who massacred his own wives, and then you have Mary I (otherwise known as "Bloody Mary", not Mary Queen of Scots as some misunderstand) who went on a local religious crusade against her own people slaughtering them as heretics. You're right in pointing out that she was very learned though, she was incredibly smart academically - though that was likely due to her situation in her childhood with little else to do.
Not at all. She literally depends on men all around her. All her closest servants were men. Replace those men with women which is what a modern women would attempt and she loses her power instantly. That was anything but fashionable.

You took the words out of my mouth 👏

Hopefully Weird History will consider this in the future. Maybe meet things halfway, keep some of the personal commentary but also talk more about how people were really like back then while considering their own set of morals/values and laws.
