    The narrator says Edward left the throne to Elizabeth....
    Edward actually left the throne to his cousin, Lady Jane Grey. Nine days after she was coronated, Mary rode into London and took the throne. Elizabeth didn't become queen until *Mary* died.

      @Juanita-gf4te Месяц назад

      @@cyberspelunker1980 Today, we exchange gifts on Christmas Day, but at the royal court in medieval and Tudor times, it was traditional for gifts to be exchanged at New Year. Gifts between monarchs and courtiers were recorded annually in a gift roll and tended to be plate, such as gilt flagons, bowls or pots. However, there are some interesting gifts when you go through the lists, such as a marmoset for the king in 1534, or the clock or wrist watch that Elizabeth I received from her favourite, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester.
      One gift that appears to have been a New Year gift and that had very special meaning, was the gift that Henry VIII received in 1527 from his sweetheart, Anne Boleyn. Henry VIII described this gift in a love letter to Anne, writing:
      “For a present so valuable that nothing could be more (considering the whole of it), I return you my most hearty thanks, not only on account of the costly diamond, and the ship in which the solitary damsel is tossed about, but chiefly for the fine interpretation, and the too humble submission which your goodness hath made to me. For I think it would be very difficult for me to find an occasion to deserve it, if I was not assisted by your great humanity and favour, which I have sought, do seek, and will always seek to preserve by all services in my power; and this is my firm intention and hope, according to the Motto, Aut illic aut nullibi (either here or nowhere) [….]”
      Historian Eric Ives explained that “For centuries the ship had been a symbol of protection - the ark which rescued Noah from the destroying deluge; the diamond - as the Roman de la Rose had said - spoke of a ‘heart as hard as diamond, steadfast and nothing pliant’”, and in his letter, the king isn’t just thanking Anne for the gift, he’s thanking her for her “too humble submission”, her submission to his will. Anne was saying ‘yes’ to the king’s proposal of marriage.
      Ives and David Starkey also point out how in the original French, the word used for “gift” is not “cadeau”, but “l’etrene [étrenne]”, which Ives states tended to imply a “novelty” or “special occasion” and Starkey believes these were a specific type of gift given at New Year. So that dates Anne’s acceptance of the king’s proposal of marriage to New Year 1527, and would tie in with the king consulting people about an annulment around Easter 1527 and seeking a dispensation from the pope in August 1527.
      If only that trinket had survived! It sounds beautiful and it was obviously a very important gift.

    Henry Percy and Anne Boleyn were never betrothed. This is a myth. Percy was already formally betrothed elsewhere and even though he didn't want that marriage he was forced to go through with it. Even if he had become betrothed to Anne it would have been null and void because he was promised elsewhere. Thomas Wyatt told us that Anne had a number of admirers and she kept them all at arms length, not wanting to ruin her reputation as her sister Mary had Later when the king was looking to annul his marriage to Anne before he had her executed he tried to use that rumour about Percy and Anne to effect an annulment. However Percy swore on The Hold Sacrament 3 separate times in an ecclesiastical court that he and Anne had never been betrothed. The king knew when he was defeated and he got Cranmer to find other means to annul the marriage which he did. Anne agreed to the annulment as it appears she was promised life in a nunnery if she agreed. She was tricked......

      @@Ganymedia9for one when his son Edward VI died he left the throne per his will to Lady Jane Grey because per Henry VIII it was to his son Edward Vl and then obviously his children but if he died before he had any children then it was to go to his daughter that he had with his first wife Katherine which is the future Mary l and then the future Elizabeth l if Mary didn’t have her own children. His son Edward Vl was a staunch Protestant that he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the throne to his older sister Mary because she was a staunch Catholic. To avoid another Catholic monarch he left the throne to Lady Jane Grey since there were no other males in the royal line to leave the throne to and she was also Protestant. When Mary found out that her brother died and that Lady Jane Grey was on the throne she rode to the Tower of London and while she was enroute she ended up with a large following because most of the citizens said that the throne belonged to Mary as the daughter of Henry Vlll. One issue though was that Lady Jane Greys dad tried to lure Mary in to have her arrested so that she wouldn’t become Queen but she was told of the plot enroute and didn’t go. When Mary 1 rode in with a huge following those who supported Lady Jane Grey then switched allegiance to Mary 1 to save their own necks which ultimately didn’t work and everyone ended up on the block!

    Henry VIII adored his greyhounds and kept a large pack of them. The white greyhound was already the symbol of the Beaufort family which was part of his familiy’s claim to the throne by his maternal grandmother Margaret Beaufort. His two favorite greyhounds named Cut and Ball wore elaborate collars adorned with precious metals and jewels. They also had tags promising rewards for returning the lost dogs to his estates. There are records of rewards being paid out for their return. Greyhounds are notorious for chasing prey so fast and far they get lost. I have adopted retired racers for 24 years and can attest at fast they run even in later age. Mine easily run 30-40 mph laps around the yard once or twice a week. They are also incredibly lazy. Mine sleep 18+ hours a day. Henry also paid large annual bonuses to his laundresses for the extra work having Cut & Ball sleep in his bed making the linens harder to clean and maintain. Being awarded the Keeper of Hounds was a high honor just below Master of the Stool. The rest of pack who didn’t live in his quarters had their own housing with servants, coats and sweaters (they have almost no body fat so if you need coat, they need a coat) specific diets and better living conditions better than most of his subjects. I can’t imagine his hounds being as healthy and swift on a vegetarian diet though. They are extremely sensitive and gentle dogs which I also didn’t fare well with his fiery temper. They do not do well with loud noises and definitely not attack dogs. In fact they are gentle giants often described as Velcro Dogs and the 40 mph Couch Potato. Mine do Pet Therapy work and my Archibald knows verbal and sign language commands. Archibald was retired early due to his XL size 94 lbs (as big as a Borzoi or deerhound) which made him too slow on the track but perfect for retirement!

    What astounds me about this period in royal circles was the intrigue & struggle to be a favorite of the monarch & have power. Look what it got them! These folks were primarily of the aristocracy - some not - think Thomas More, Cromwell, Woolsey. Yet those of royal blood were also wiped. There were many with better pedigrees than the Tudors. If I’d lived in this period as an aristo woman, when you had little power except your money and/or your ability to pop out offspring, I would have hoped to marry a country gentleman & avoid the court absolutely.

    Today's Royal Fanily does descend from Mary Boleyn and Henry's sister, Margaret, but I would like to point out that Henry's can't be completely disqualified as an ancestor either. I don't know where this channel gets it's sources but Manu historians do consider that Henry VIII could have fathered either one, both or neither of Mary's children. The reason we aren't sure is because the timeline of his affair with Mary is murky, and there was never a DNA test done on either of Mary's children. I'm not saying that Henry 100% was the father but I'm saying that it's common knowledge that he can't be disqualified as such either. Therefore, to say that he is in no way an ancestor through Mary's children is highly inaccurate. I swear, this channel spews so many inaccuracies in its videos, man 🙄

    Someone who weighs 400 pounds would have a waist much larger than 50” around. Like twice that circumference. Especially a man 6’ tall.

    I love you Weird History but your "joke" about The Other Boleyn Girl movie is fighting words 👊🏼😂
    On a serious note tho as a history nerd and Tudor nerd i'm well aware that it's not accurate (it never claimed to be and tbf is based on a fictional book) but at the same time it's definitely one of my guilty pleasure movies- nothing wrong with a movie/tv show being inspired by history you can separate entertainment/fact it's when they claim it's accurate that I have an issue with it 🤷🏻‍♀️
