Los Angeles was hosting the 1984 Summer Olympics gave us a reason for optimism, while Apple's commercial "1984" boldly landed during the Super Bowl. Such an eventful year. This was also the summer of Michael Jackson’s Victory Tour. Prince had just released his Purple Rain album. Break Dancing was peaking, as a popular form of dance. The Karate Kid was released in theaters; and on a very dubious note, the San Ysidro McDonalds Massacre had shocked the nation. And there was a little known artist named Madonna who released “Like a Virgin”
This particular Timeline video missed it on music history. 1984 was CLEARLY one of THE most definitive years in music history.
I was born in 82 and i have a very strong memory of being a sperm joking with the other sperm about this mythical "virginity" Madonna claimed she had , that bitch getting fucked was the reason God said " let there be light" because he wanted to see what the noise was

Honestly I really hate you guys didn't talk about Purple Rain, that album played a huge role in the creation of the parental advisory sticker, sat atop the billboard charts for 24 weeks and won an academy award. 1984 was the year of the purple one and to not mention Prince kinda sucks I mean the guy played a huge role in the sound of the 80's and even the culture from his rivalry with MJ to his famous relationships he had in the 80's and we haven't even mentioned the impact his albums had during the decade, I hope you guys bring him up more often next time because you can't talk about the 80's and not mention Prince because he was right there with Michael and Madonna changing the game and influencing the new generation of artists that would come after them.
On Dec. 19, 1984, my brother (4 years my senior) died due to lymphoma. He has just turned 26 on Dec. 7th. He will always live in our hearts and good memories.

This Timeline series has already produced, in my opinion, by far your best videos ever. I think you should consider doing another one for the 70s (or 90s, or whatever era really) once the '80s is up. I'm enjoying this a ton, and I'm sure others are too. Please keep it up, this content is really interesting and well-made.
I say add whatever years, but continue with the 80's, highlighting different aspects of each year. Just start back at 1980 - over and over. I love the 80's!

I could watch these 80s episodes over and over ...a truly amazing decade unlike any other. I wish you guys would do more comprehensive episodes of eachyear. an hour or two per year to really get into the feeling of each year.. you guys do such a great job with these I'm sure you'd hit it out of the park with more expanded episodes. .

Far less racist too at least for us kids, we didn't look at colors, we just made judgments on whether we thought the other kid was cool or not. Damn I miss those days, we'd also settle things in the good old fist fight vs pulling a knife or gun. Most times we would breakdance it out but yeah simpler times.

Fun story - My parents owned the very first "mini-van" sold in the central PA area. For many months, people would come out of the woodwork to talk to us and ask us what it was. Quite often, my father would give tours of the inside to wide-eyed people. No one had ever seen such a thing. Sometimes he would remove a seat in the middle of a parking lot to demonstrate.
That funny...my grandpa still drive nothing but the mini van. He upgrades every couple of years.
Minivans today have a power-punching V6. Those first 80's minivans (and 90's) were 4-banger gutless wonders that couldn't make it up a hill without anticipating by going over the speed limit before the hill.
Minivans are like fanny packs. They're really useful, great inventions in theory, but you just can't ever look cool using them.

I think 1984 was the first year of the 80s that was truly, 100% 80s, as previous years seem to have had a 70s influence on them still. I was 4/5 in 1984, and some of my biggest memories of that year were Bruce Springsteen (still one of my favorite musicians), mini vans, the Olympics, McDonalds being THE cultural icon and people wearing Where's the Beef? t-shirts.
Remember the Discount Tire commercial where the lady throes the tire through the store window? That was 1984 too I think.
When a decade starts the first half aka the early decade going to still have the style, influence and culture from the latter part of the last decade with some new changes and the middle of the decade is when we really moved on from the previous decade( usually during years 2,3, or 4 depending how you want to define it) and the late decade usually in 7( sometimes the 7 considered as a mid decade year but depending how you define it) 8 and 9 is when we introduced new things to close the decade and prepare for the next

@Heather F Purple Rain really brought me out of the world I was in. The album is glorious. Then I saw the film, again, 13 years old. Walked out a different person. Prince was/is one of a kind and my idol.

He was one of very few black rock musicians at the time (actually, of all time), and he rocked like crazy on that album.

There was NO decade like the '80s. So many reasons why.
The music (Ozzy, Def Leppard, Michael Jackson), the sports (Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, 84 Olympics), the politics (Reagan winning 49/50 states, the Berlin wall teardown), the movies (Terminator), etc.
There was just no time like it. The eighties ruled. I turned 12 in 1980, so I spent my entire teenage years in the '80s.

Fun Fact: When they filmed the recording session and video of "Do they know it's christmas", George Michael just came back home from the shooting of "Last Christmas". You know now that I'm actually living in a technocratic dystopian society, I wish I was back in 1984 and all it's optimism. As a teenager in the 90s I looked back at rhe 80s with disgust due to that very thing. Now that I'm am adult however I'd take the 80s over the 90s any day of the week.
yup, us the 90's teenagers were up to date with edginess and bleak pessimism of that decade, brushing off the 80's as the silly and corny decade of childish optimism...little did we know that things would only get worse in upcoming decades, leaving 80's the last decade of true joy and love for the life!

I don't really consider myself an older person since I'm still not even 40, but I'd still trade these modern days of unbearable SJWs and boring ass generic pop culture filled with moronic superhero movies and dumb instagram broads for the fun and uplifting 80's, no matter how corny and naive they were. Internet is the only good thing really that was developed from the 90's going upwards, everything else went to the shitters quick - movies and music are getting more generic and boring with every passing year, people don't even bother communicating with each precisely because of the "technology" to begin with, since they're too busy being enamored with their newest smartphone or ipad. And to top it all, you can't even crack any joke nowadays in fear of upsetting some sensitive snowflake, who is just lurking somewhere around you looking for a chance to get upset and sue you...
