I remember listening to Henry Hill being interviewed on the Howard Stern show. And midway through the interview, Spider's real life sister calls into the show. She starts grilling Henry Hill to reveal what they did with Spider's body after they killed him. The woman talked about how her brother's sudden disappearance affected her family, especially her parents. She just wanted to find some closure, but Henry Hill just kept dodging her questions. At this point in time, I had no idea that Spider was even a real person. It was a very eerie moment where real life imitates art.
There's another Howard Stern clip where Hill pulls up smashed and confesses to three murders. Previously he claimed he'd never killed anyone which I think factored into his plea deal as well.
jbot91 I know, right? In Wise Guy, Henry Hill never said anything regarding his “escape attempts” from the mob in his earlier years by joining the military or by buying a restaurant in a different area. He talks about the murder of Billy Batts, said Tommy & Jimmy were crazy, but that’s the end of it. Mostly complained about cleaning out his trunk himself then having to buy a new car ‘cause of the corpse smell.
To be fair Henry was pretty tame compared to Tommy & he was actually pretty smart not to ask Jimmy for his cut from the Lufthansa Heist. I'm not trying to defend his choices by any means but I think compared to those guys he probably saw himself as more laidback & tolerant than them
One really depressing and frightening thing about this movie is that a lot of the characters are quite restrained compared to their real-life counterparts. Scorsese had their brutality and ruthlessness toned down because he found the real story to be unbelievable if portrayed in film.
The thing I love about Goodfellas is how well Ray, Joe, and Robert play off each other. It feels like a genuine group of friends, but that's all a facade. They may like each other but all that joking and playing around is just to pass the time. They'd eat each other alive if it was in their interest
You have to look at gangster movies in terms of mafia hierarchy. Goodfellas is about low level associates. The only true member of the mafia was Paulie. The characters were just street criminals in the employ of the mafia. A movie like Casino looks at the midlevel gangster. While Ace was jewish and not a made man, Nicky certainly was, and was in fact essentially a capo or captain. The Godfather obviously looks at the lives of the top end mobsters. I love all three of those films but it's very difficult to compare them because their plots center around completely different dynamics.

Isaac Matthews I guess Scarface doesn’t count since Tony and his crew were Cuban and weren’t in the Mafia. Plus, it did appear that the whole focus was drugs (and associated violence), and did not include any other businesses such as the loansharking/racketeering/prostitution/etc normally associated with more organized crime. It could be a rag to riches rise of a street thug?
Henry Hill was hardly the saint he wanted to be seen as, or is even portrayed in this video essay... just listen to the part where he's describing how Paul beats that woman up with a baseball bat. He cracks up and starts laughing, catches himself, and promptly corrects himself. He enjoyed the life.
He wanted to distance himself from it so much but continued talking about it for decades after he snitched. Main players are rotting in prison while he is yapping his mouth about what they did & painting himself as a saint.
Martin Billybob He was a worthless scumbag who got far better than he deserved. I suspect that he directly participated in the murder of Billy Batts as opposed to what’s depicted in his memoir and the movie.
The reason they couldn’t use Burks name is because Jimmy’s daughter threatened to sue them. Burk was in jail for the long haul so he didn’t have parole.
Jimmy Burke was called Jimmy Conway in the movie because his mom, who put him in an orphanage was called Jane Conway, and the last name Burke he got from his foster parents. So that was the reason besides the obvious legal reason.

Watching this, I just realized my dads old bathroom, that I always tell him to renovate, has the exact same tiling. Next time I'll tell him to keep it as it is.
My dad's fave movie was The Godfather. When I told him I thought Goodfellas was infinitely better it caused us to watch both back to back. It was a truly memorable afternoon.
Well I grew up in Brooklyn as a kid, and later on, I saw the film Goodfellas and was shocked at how accurate it was, I grew up around the Men of Goodfellas
Important to note that Henry was probably lying about "trying to get away from those guys", there is a good reason why Scorsese didn't include this repeated "desire" in the movie. I think he didn't believe it, and I am inclined to agree. Also, knowing that Tommy was a psycho 6 foot something tall guy who supposedly randomly shot a pedestrian to death in order to test his gun makes him way more menacing in real life than in the movie. Additionally, the detail of the truck driver giving a slight nod to the guys then shouting about a black person stealing his truck is awful lol, but probably true.
Ugh I love this movie so much. I’ll never forget watching it with my dad for this first time when I was like 13/14. He was so excited that I was finally “old enough” for him to show it to me. He kept telling me all about how he grew up during these times and how he knew about a lot of guys like that. This movie will always have a special place in my heart.
Rumour has it that paulie is moving so slow these days because he doesn't have to move AT ALL FOR ANYONE that he's literally become a statue at times he can be seen as a street performer people try to get him to move, BUT PAULIE DOESN'T HAVE TO MOVE FOR ANYONE hehe
The best scene is after they whack billy bats. Casually stopping at Tommy’s mothers place for an Italian meal while bats is clinging to life in the back of the car. When they joke about her painting, I laugh hysterically every time.
My favorite part of that scene, is when henrey is digesting the situation, that they just killed a made guy and tommy's big worry is that he got blood on henrey's floor.
The one area I thought the film failed was Paulie. They made him seem “lovable” and at the end of the movie he says “Paulie’s crazy” and he’s scared of him but the movie never once shows Paulie doing anything but eating.

one of my favourite parts of the film is when Karen is screaming at Henry's girlfriend through the Intercom.... "Get your own god damn man!!" Lorraine Bracco did a great job in that scene.
The movie is great but it’s not accurate. They had to soften up the characters because Tommy DeSimone, Paul Vario, James Burke were extremely brutal and sadistic mobsters.
Alan Rosario 809 it was accurate in pretty much everything depicted though, just because they left out violent parts that weren’t necessary to the plot doesn’t make the movie inaccurate.
Eh, wouldn't say it's that accurate Henry Hill was a known liar and liked to make himself sound bigger than he was. Other still living monsters from the era have very different story's to describe Henry Hill.
29:00 I always got the impression that Henry Hill wanted to be known as a good guy who just got in over his head. The reaction he had when recounting this story tells me otherwise. He was just as bad as the rest of the people he associated with and got out only because he was in hot water.
Psychopaths only look out for No 1 I'm willing to bet Hill counted on his "associates" not pulling him with them in their crimes, for they would undermine their own defense

Hey, earlier this evening, before I saw this, I was telling my wife about Pauley slicing the garlic with a razor blade. Made me hungry, I gotta try that.
It's also worth that Henry wasn't just dealing Cocaine, he was dealing Queludes, Coke, Speed and The big Calzone: Heroin. He was dipping into his coke and heroin and it was beginning to show. Now despite he not being a Madeguy, he was very close with Paul Vario who was a Lucchese Caporegime/Captain and a powerful one from what I understand.
The guy cooking the steaks in the prison scene "an aristocrat", threw acid in my cousin's face (victor riesel) to silence him, he was a journalist exposing corruption.

Grim Fact: The real life beating of Billy Batts was so violent, the gun fell apart in Tommy's hand. After a beating like that, it's a miracle Batts survived and had to be finished off.
Thanks for commenting I NEVER knew this was unscripted and I just rewatched the scene and now that you mentioned it you can totally see that Ray Liotta reacts for like a nanosecond and then resumes character.
@@ChickyParm1972 lol... yea it was a good scene and they needed it as authentic as possible and the real Paul Varrio was known to exert his power over his crew and was no joke.....
I love that you made the point crystal clear that gangsters pervert ideals like loyalty, honor and respect to rationalize their cruel, vicious and self serving behaviors.
The real Henry Hill laughs as he tells these stories and then remembers that he has to pretend like its serious and not funny. When he was talking about Paul Vario beating a woman with a baseball bat watch his face and listen to how he says it.
5:05 "and he loved, above all, feeling valued". And that right there is the cornerstone, the main structural element, of how gangs, mobs, cults, and even many of our institutions work and attract and keep members. It's extremely powerful and coercive to give someone who has been convinced for whatever reason that they're worthless a worth through purpose, even if that purpose is an ulterior motive to serve some self-serving goal of your own. Quite often in such situations what's not seen is that valuation comes at a price, that in most cases what you get out of the situation that makes you feel great is being paid to the 'leader' many times over. Especially in the mob. The more you make, the better you do, the more you kick upstairs to the Boss.

@Shrimp Lord [GurApostle 9th of the twelve] Which I think it's fair, considering Henry was a low level associate, half-irish, a screw up and a rat. Oh and a drug and alcohol addict. Unreliable as they can be.
@Shrimp Lord [GurApostle 9th of the twelve] I don't see how. The purpose of the movie is to show life at the bottom of the mafia totem pole. That's Henry Hill.
They called him Jimmy Conway because it was his original last name. Burke was given to him by a foster family. He wouldn't let him use his real name, so they used his old one.
And Joe Pesci's character's mother was played by his Scorcese's mother. And the guy who killed Joe Pesci's character was played by his father. It was right out of Greek tragedy.

As a person that is about to get diagnosed with ADHD, I can say that fidgeting is a good sign. But there are others. However I am also about to take a Master in a non-hippie subject and I can say that I do not think that diagnoses are an excuse for behaving dishonorable and criminal.
@Mikael As a person that all my life have had to combat problems with concentration, temper and restlessness, periods with extreme energy and low energy, I can say that you come to a point where you realise that it is not about a lack of self-discipline. I have a times struggled very hard in order to get as far as I have gotten today and it has led to burnouts and depression. There was a time when I thought that ADHD was just an excuse for bad disciplin. Sure ADHD is not an excuse for bad behavior, but still it is something that exists even in people that is neither of the male sex or adults.
Goodfellas was an absolute classic. The Godfather made the running, especially the Godfather II. But Goodfellas was all in. It really was made with the intention of 'telling it like it is'! This is what gave it such class. Goodfellas didn't hold back or romanticize the mob. It is always going to be an absolute classic!
Godfather is about a bosses son taking over his business and showing the power a boss can have, Goodfellas is about a mixed kid who wants to be a gangster. Some of the best scenes in Godfather involve dealing with death. I recommend you rewatch the two films and see how they and goodfellas are essentially the same overall.
@@MostHighEmperorPalpatine Nah, Godfather heavily romanticizes the Mafia. Makes them look like their crime "family" is like an actual large family with them all sticking together no matter what, and that they only do what they have to. The year it came out, 1990, I lived in a mob neighborhood in Boston. No trouble for me. I was just Joe Jerk taking the subway to work. There was a couple of bars and restaurants I knew to stay out of. Exercised MYOB. Don't rubberneck, don't ask questions. Walk straight ahead and don't "see" nothin'. If you did that, it was a safe neighborhood!
Max Shea probably a lot safer than it is without the mob. Not defending them but if you weren’t involved in “the life” they wouldn’t bother you, no drive by shootings that kill children, old ladies could safely walk the streets of their neighborhoods.
I remember going to Javeli's in Eastie back in the 90s with my grandma, and seeing a group of older chubby Italian dudes with gold necklaces sitting at a table on a platform separated from everyone else. People would walk in and out talking to them for only a few minutes at a time.
I don't want to comtradict anybody's lived experience, but plenty of people still got massively negatively affected by the mob even of they minded their own business, like somebody trying to open a store in a min neighborhood. The crime rate has gone down since the golden age of the mob, not up.
@GentlemanDemon You're right and it points out one of the flaws of childhood reference; Children usually get a lot of leeway in society, even among criminals to a degree. Between that, how flawed distant memories are and the typical perception of kids, and you get a lot of skewed accounts. This is why no matter what decade it is, somebody considers it the "good old days." My grandfather told me how much better things were in the 30s, and when I asked him what he thought depression meant, he smacked my mouth.
Also, and this should go without saying, but we're going through an 80s nostalgia currently and the 80s SUCKED. I knew people that went to the Copacabana around this time, they did not go through the kitchen, but bringing the table down front really happened ,so you thought you had a front row till someone else came in, not saying the kitchen scene couldn't happen. Also they would mark the bottle of scotch on the side with a pencil that's how these guys paid for what they drank. Jules Podell ran a tight ship and some were regulars.
He lived 69 years - at least 55 of those "at risk" and 40 of those - potentially toxic/depending on amount, with his use of alcohol + drugs. I would say - Henry was an "Odds-Breaker" ...
Winston Churchill drank and smoked all his life but lived to the age of 95 or more. Some people have ironcast genes that seem to defy the norms of medical and lifestyle risk. I would guess that Hill boasted about all the drugs and drink he consumed, nobody could live that long on a regular habit of class A drugs without there being some periods of moderate or near zero use or outright abstinence, but this does not make for good news colour.
I wish they had portrayed how Jimmy's gang really got the keys from the guard with the hooker, not only is it amazing that it's a true story but it would have fit the tone and narrative of the film very well, a small detail that would have been nice to have, oh well.
I just watched the scene where Johnny Roast Beef describes the Air France heist, and I noticed, he actually does bring up that the only thing he doesn't have sorted is the key to get in. When Henry asks what he needs to do to get the key, Roast Beef says he'll take care of it, so the event about getting the guard drunk and stealing the keys and making a mold presumably happened off screen
Although Billy Batts' murder was for the most part, shown to be a revenge slaying due to Batts; disrespect of Tommy, earlier in the movie, there is an understated scene that does somewhat let the audience in on the fact that there was also a conflict between Batts and Jimmy Conway. At one point, we see Conway and Batts speaking to one another. Because its a quiet conversation, they dont initially appear to be arguing, but if you listen, you can hear Batts getting annoyed with Jimmy as he tells him that he wants what is due to him. This was about the loan sharking racket that was formerly run by Billy Batts and had been taken over by Jimmy after Batts had gone to prison. Billy was letting Jimmy know that now that he was out, he expected the business to be returned to him, which was something that Jimmy of course, didn't want to do. So although it's subtle, the film actually does reference Jimmy's reason for being involved in the murder and why he seemed to have so few qualms about helping Tommy kill a made guy.
One thing you didn't mention was the soundtrack for this film, I thought it helped make the movie. Other than that great video and break down of my personal favorite movie, thanks!
Kudos to pointing out that the real Tommy DiSimeone was a hulk compared to Pesci, but yes, that spirit is there. Also, my understanding is that Jimmy's last name was depicted as "Conway" because, yes, Burke was incarcerated then and the studio did not want to risk a possible defamation suit. Conway was, from what I have heard, Burke's mother's maiden name. Nice work.
The scene with spider is definitely real. I remember a time that Henry Hill was on The Howard Stern show & a woman called up who said she was Spiders sister IRL (Henry confirmed it was really her) She was begging Henry to tell her family where Spiders body was buried so they could give him an actual burial. It was scary & sad. In that same interview he mentioned that the bar was also a bocce ball court & that there were quite a few bodies under it. Maybe he is there.
"Jimmy buried over a dozen bodies, including Dominick "Remo" Cersani and Michael "Spider" Gianco, under the bocce courts. If you go there today and look down the left side of the building, you'll see piles of dirt. After I went into the program, Jimmy had the feds and media over to witness the courts being dug up" Yea you're right

My impression after watching the movie, documentaries and reading the book 'Goodfellas', is that Henry was swimming with a pack of piranhas. You show one sign of weakness, they'll eat you. Without hesitation. Then again, considering how his upbringing was, there's no wonder why Mob life seemed so attractive to him when he was a kid. At home and at school, everybody is treating you like a nobody, and everyday is a struggle. While the Wiseguys are treating you well, patting you on your back, you earn a lot of money and you're having a good time along the way. Who' wouldn't be tempted by that when they're a teenager?

The thing I love about Goodfellas is how well Ray, Joe, and Robert play off each other. It feels like a genuine group of friends, but that's all a facade. They may like each other but all that joking and playing around is just to pass the time. They'd eat each other alive if it was in their interest
The scene with Martins mom perfectly shows that
The casting of young Henry is just astounding. So much like Ray Liotta

Conway was one of his adoptive surnames, not sure if that’s why they landed on that. But he did bounce around adoptive families.
Jimmy Burke was called Jimmy Conway in the movie because his mom, who put him in an orphanage was called Jane Conway, and the last name Burke he got from his foster parents. So that was the reason besides the obvious legal reason.

I always think that when preparing spaghetti.

You forgot to talk about Henry and Karen's relationship. I want to know how accurately that was portrayed.
Here is what I want to know:
• Was Karen's attraction to Henry portrayed right?
• Was their first date accurately portrayed?
• How did Karen's parents really feel about her marrying Henry?
• Did Karen really lie to Henry that another guy was harassing her so that Henry could beat him up?
• Did Karen really try to kill Henry?
I swear she is the original "Karen."
I want to know was Paulie really having an affair with Henry wife and how did he find out did somebody tell him or as have been stated that Henry was known as a liar
We almost got nuked to the death so many fucking times, that people just started ignoring alarms. The ones that people talk about (the bear incident, the documentary incident, the FUCKING NOTHING INCIDENT) are only notable for being "wacky".
That doesn't even include the AIDS crisis and general bigotry.
Love Deniro stomping Billy Bats out, the whole motion he’s making is wonderful lol

According to Michael Francese, Henry never got that kind of treatment
Came for Goodfellas, stayed for the content, and comedy. Good shit
Comedy?
He lived 69 years - at least 55 of those "at risk" and 40 of those - potentially toxic/depending on amount, with his use of alcohol + drugs.
I would say - Henry was an "Odds-Breaker" ...
I'd say that's a good life to live
Interesting, your comment comes at it from a different angle.

How?
Maybe the hooker didn’t give up her rights 😂😂
The deception of the JFK security guard by using a hooker was for the Air France heist worth $480,000 back then; not the Lufthansa Heist.
@@thema.sosoudid2229 the movie is already 2 hours long
@@thema.sosoudid2229 its deception, adds tension into the success of the job, and its sleazy. Sums up goodfellas pretty well. Maybe in another life.
Agreed...only you're confusing Johnny Roast Beef with Frenchy.

Jimmy "Conway" was given this name in the film because in real life, Jimmy Burke's mother's maiden name was Conway.
Marc Russell fact, but they coulnt use Burke because his wife wanted too much money.
He also used Jimmy Conway as an alias from time to time
His foster family were the Burke’s. His real estranged mom was a Conway.
Also I read a book that says the family of Burke tryed to shake down De Niro for 100k & sue the filmmakers if they used Burke name

One thing you didn't mention was the soundtrack for this film, I thought it helped make the movie. Other than that great video and break down of my personal favorite movie, thanks!
Loved the Eric Clapton piano bit.
Fab soundtrack!
I remember a time that Henry Hill was on The Howard Stern show & a woman called up who said she was Spiders sister IRL (Henry confirmed it was really her)
She was begging Henry to tell her family where Spiders body was buried so they could give him an actual burial.
After I went into the program, Jimmy had the feds and media over to witness the courts being dug up" Yea you're right
Thats very sad
@Jimmy Crackcorn No. At least not that day on the Howard Stern show. It was really messed up.
You calling me a deadbeat SMASH !! Can I believe this prick? Wanna hear something funny? Last week he asked me to Christen his kid. Yeah 7 thousand dollars I charge!!!! Best line. Btw Spider was wrapped in a web and dumped in an ant hole....
William Fetters I remember hearing that on the Stern show too. I seem to recall Hill would occasionally call in to the show, usually sounding pretty blasted.
To be fair Pesci’s music career wasn’t a total joke: He did introduce Bob Gaudio to Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito, bringing him in to the Four Seasons.
Wasn't that from the movie
MASTER-OF- EVIL It’s true though
Yah, you are right. He came from a really poor family and saw a way of getting out.
Don't believe everything in the book. These guys murdered my uncle, and in the book they claim he was shot in the chest so he could have an open casket. In reality.... There was no open casket. There was no body. There is no grave. My family has spent 40 years wondering where his body is. His existence has been wiped out. His birth records don't even exist anymore.
@@st8562 I'm not trying to excuse or to justify what these guys did. What they did was wrong, no matter how you look at it.
And what Henry did was wrong in every way, but then again he's a person with a weak character.
Even during the witness protection program he kept on doing things that got him sendt to prison.

The big surprise for me was realising that Michael Franzese is cameoed in this movie. I have been watching a lot of his interviews and didn't know he was until he said he was in it. Was a wow moment for me.
He was portrayed in the film and only mentioned once. Michael said he was surprised by his name being mentioned in the film and clarified that he never hung out with Hill, Burke, or Tommy. He knew them but was never in a social setting with them. Michael’s review of Goodfellas was really good and also mentioned the inaccuracies of the movie.

Forget the bribery by criminals, the real crookedness of the American penal system is how it’s reinvented the slave trade by exploiting prison labour for cheap.
