Things You Didn't Know About The Crusades

  • What happened during the Crusades? What were the Crusades? This time is one of the most misunderstood periods of Western history. From 1095 to 1291, successive waves of Christian knights and royals, called to action by the Catholic Church, quested to the Holy Land in an effort to capture (or re-capture) it from Muslim armies.
But facts about the Crusades are much more complicated than that. The Crusades weren't just one movement, but dozens, led by hundreds of knights, kings, and dukes, and not always bent on capturing Jerusalem. They tried to free Jerusalem, but also claimed a number of ancient cities, destroying priceless artifacts and culture.

A lot of people complaining that “this wasn’t covered” or “that wasn’t covered”
The crusades were a multi century series of major military campaigns involving many of the kingdoms and religions at the time……. I’m not sure how you expected them to cover everything in 13 minutes.

The last Islamic assault on an European capital was in 1683(Vienna). During the late 15th and 16th century while Europeans were beginning the exploitation of the Americas and enslavement of Africans Islamic raiders from North Africa and Ottomans raided/assaulted Europe. Arabs enslaved 10 million plus Africans over a 900 year old. Neither of these are discussed today when colonialism, imperialism, and slavery are discussed.
This isn’t to condemn Islam. I don’t see it as any more avaricious or brutal than Christianity. Both religions have a lot in their histories to reckon with. Rather, it is to point out how to this day history is still subject to the bias of those teaching it. We have made very little progress in teaching the past honestly.

There was a secondary reason the Crusades happened. While mainly to attempt to reclaim the holy land (I don't know if it was this channel or another channel that likes to use recipes from Middle Ages on up) the other reason for the Crusades was to give the knights something to do. They were bored and restless often getting into fights with others and killing one another that it was said the pope had them go on the Crusade to pretty much get them out of everyone's hair. (I want to think restless young recruits thirsting for blood and no one to quench it so they caused a ruckus much to the ire of everyone having to put up with them.)

    The crusades failed because of:
    1. Hubris- Tactics were non-existent. A huge army left Jerusalem instead of utilizing siege warfare, crossed a desert in the middle of summer to fight a battle, and nearly died of thirst before they even got there. Few survived,
    2. Infighting - Various nobles fought each other for glory. Richard the Lion Hearted insulted the Duke of Austria so much that the Duke took his huge army and returned home, causing the crusade to fail. The Duke got his revenge though!
    3. Dwindling population of knights/Christians - Most warriors fought for treasure and glory. They hated the Middle East and had no interest in staying in such an inhospitable region. Most went home. There were only a few hundred knights left to defend Jerusalem when it fell to the Muslims
    4. Lack of support from Europe - people just stopped caring.
