The man who came to be known as King Henry VIII would marry no fewer than six times, in pursuit of not only a male heir, but also of love. It’s hard to discern the man from the myth. But it's easy to see that Henry VIII has become the most infamous English King, and is remembered half a millennium later for his romantic passion and his tyrannous rule.

Henry VIII did what he did and all for nothing. His dynasty lasted no longer than his children. His glorious successor was not his son but the little red haired girl that he didn't want who was born on September 7 1533. She was one of England's greatest rulers that ever existed. This little red haired girl ruled with her head and not with her heart. She had the heart and stomach of king.

From what I read he was very fond of Elizabeth until her mother’s fall. Of course, right before that, he suffered a permanent brain injury in a fall during a tournament. He’s personality, never that great, changed dramatically after that.

    • @sablewright8053
      @sablewright8053 5 месяцев назад

@@dvkaw7780 he wanted a boy. He was trying to secure the succession. Look what happened back in 1135 when a woman tried to be queen in her own right. I mean look what happened during Henry's fathers lifetime. Remember the wars of the roses? Yes other countries had women rulers like isabella I of spain and margaret I of denmark. But these were different countries. Not England. He really wanted a son to continue the Tudor line through the male line. That was his focus. Yes both of his daughters were strong but he wanted a son to sit on the throne. He wanted Anne Boleyn to give him a son that is why he risked invasion and civil war. He broke with 1000 years of religious tradition for her and the hopeful son she would give him. Not for another girl.

"as a man he was intelligent but vain, hotheaded but benevolent. As a husband he was generous and kind" Wow - what a joke!! This guy was an idiot who was ruled by his lust and insane need for a male heir. He treated Katherine of Aragon horribly, even though she helped him at every turn. He made sure that she didn't see her daughter for years before she died. He married a teenager, ruined her life and then had her beheaded - these are just a few of the horrible things he did. He was a tyrant who would turn on a dime and got rid of anyone who opposed him or disagreed with him. One of the worst rulers of England.

I don't think he would have been as cruel had he been non psychopathic. Psychopaths can be very calloused when they discard someone. They can be loyal partners up until they're not, until they want a new toy. And if they want to gain at the expense of the partner, then they'll attempt to do so. They can do very seriously evil things and I have heard some real horror stories.

This account described Arthur's death as: *_".. .. the most pitiful disease and sickness that with so sore and great violence had battled and driven, in the singular parts of him inward, [so] that cruel and fervent enemy of nature, the deadly corruption, did utterly vanquish and overcome the pure and friendful blood, without all manner of physical help and remedy."_*
Sweating sickness, was a disease of unknown cause that appeared in England (except in 1528-29) as an epidemic on five occasions-in 1485, 1508, 1517, 1528, and 1551. Prince Arthur died in 1502, a time when cases of this disease wasn't prevalent. Sweating sickness remains a mystery, as without DNA testing any hypothesis is just a theory. Contemporary scholars have suggested that the illness was caused by hantavirus infection.
The primary source could be interpreted and also misinterpreted as many things: "Sore and great violence," could be painful convolutions. "In the singular parts of him inward, [so] that cruel and fervent," could be a singular internal constant agonizing pain. "Deadly corruption," could be the four humours, or principal fluids - black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. "Vanquish and overcome the pure and friendful blood," likely describes blood letting. "Without all manner of physical help and remedy," means just what it says.
"The Receyt of the Ladie Kateryne" also states Kateryne & Arthur, both became inflicted with sickness at the same time. I don't know how her sickness was described, as it's behind a PayWall. But all later accounts should be viewed as dubious.
My apologies for the long rant of poor grammar in regards to your question, but OCD & Time allowed / prevented me from simply answering it without explanation. Wiki, Google, or others, state the cause of death for Arthur from much later elaborated sources and provide little to no reference from which their information was obtained.
HIGHLY suggest searching for the RUclips channel: History Calling, and her video called: Tragic Death and burial of Prince Arthur Tudor | What killed Prince Arthur | Grave of Prince Arthur.
She is outstanding at finding & reading primary sources and discusses simply without prejudice in a uniquely calming toned down Irish accent any relevant faults or doubts in primary & later sources.

Henry's dynasty did not end with Elizabeth but with his son Edward. No child born of Mary or Elizabeth could bear the Tudor name. Any child born of the sisters would bear the husband's name. I am amazed how people overlook that surnames in that time were patrilineal. Henry's first child Mary followed Edward on the throne. It was Mary who laid the foundations for much of what Elizabeth achieved.

(PART 2 … see PART 1 in above comment)
I will concede that the treatment of his dear friend Sir Thomas More is a mystery to me. They were such good friends, or at least historical documents suggest as much. How he could mistreat Thomas More as King Henry did, a result of their differences concerning the Catholic Church and the divorce matter, and then his subsequent execution. It seems senseless. Could they not have just agreed to disagree? Keep in mind though, Sir Thomas More had many non-Catholics burned at the stake for heresy. Yes. Nothing saintly about that. But I know ... there is always more to the story than we are privy to. And distorted by many with less than honorable intentions. Only God knows, and maybe one day we will find out in the hereafter.
Fascinating history, with many more details. In fairness to detractors of Henry’s behavior with unfavorable views of him overall, he did have his brutal moments and seasons apart from his medical/mental struggles. I ask what King or Queen didn’t? But it is hard to say IMO why and/or whether those who received harsh treatment/execution during Henry’s reign deserved it or not. There is much more to this story than the versions force fed to the unwashed masses via those with a less than honorable agenda. I personally believe Henry’s strong leadership as a MAN, tremendous national, even global reaching accomplishments, offends the modern-day feminist types, and prefer the “Tyrant” title as appropriate. I say BS.
So, I present only a small picture here. But keep in mind, that Henry VIII ruled for 37 years! He did amazing things besides having wives, that still affect the world today.
----He signed the ‘Universal and Perpetual Peace’ agreement with France via the Field of Cloth of Gold event during Henry and Wolsey’s initiated Congress between England and France in 1518. He was ~28 years old at the time. This brought the beginnings of Diplomacy into the arena of national affairs going forward as the new way to settle grievances and political disputes. Diplomacy continues to be widely touted in our modern times as the only practical way to peace and conflict resolution. This placed England firmly at the center of European politics, rather than the once prevailing view of England as a “rain-swept island at the edge of the known world”. Thank King Henry VIII for that.
----Education was highly regarded, encouraged, and supported, and many learning institutions were started to include prestigious colleges built and exist to this day. Oxford and Cambridge anyone? A direct result of Henry's doing as King.
----Henry is considered as the 'Father of the English Navy'. He built many advanced design naval ships of the day and developed naval war doctrine, and traditions that are used/built upon to this day as well. Upwards of 80 ships were in the Battle of the Solent in 1545 against a French invasion attempt. They failed. Henry understood warfare. Incidentally, the infamous Henry VIII flagship, the Mary Rose, was sunk at this time due to an error in the weight distribution of heavy guns, possibly because the crew left the lower gun port hatches open. Winds had buffeted the ship with a subsequent heeling over and water entering the lower ports, inundating the ship with tragic results. A painful loss for the King. In any event, consensus is that the world's most powerful Navy, the United States Navy, has been influenced largely by Henry's naval prowess, as we come from our cousins over the Atlantic. Yes. He also built numerous still-in-use Naval installations/ports in England.
----Developed a modern army and fortresses, modern for the times, with new and innovative weaponry. Many innovations still used today, and/or built upon, made England prosper and grow as a great empire and world superpower of the day. A direct influence on England's current status as a world power, politically, financially, and militarily. He established the ‘Council for Marine Causes’ which would become the Admiralty, and he transformed his ships and the way they fought from unwieldy vessels carrying soldiers who would board an enemy and fight it out hand to hand, to sleek, fast ships armed with heavy cannon which would blast their enemy into submission. For the first time the kingdom had a standing royal navy, consisting of a fleet of battleships.
----He combined Imperial and Feudal Concepts. He curbed the power of noblemen and their families. Instead, he enhanced the power of the monarchy and the parliament. He paved the way for the Constitution of England, albeit, an uncodified Constitution that is nonetheless recognized in many instances by Parliament and the modern British judicial system. Acts of Parliament were now executed as the norm. Lordships were abolished, the land divided into counties, with royal officials appointed, and members of parliament sent to Westminster. A monarch’s sovereignty now sourced from parliament … no longer the Pope. These legal and political reforms have endured to the present. Not many monarchs of England can claim the enduring accomplishments such as those of King Henry the VIII.
----He separated from the Catholic Church. Much due to the divorce issue the Pope would not grant him with Catherine of Aragon after 24 years of marriage. Corruption of the church was a factor as well. True...divorce is wrong other than for adultery, though God would prefer forgiveness and resolution even for adultery, but the King's 'matter' for Henry, was overwhelming to him to the core. It was anathema to not to have an heir. A son. So, he split from the Catholic Church and created the Church of England, which exists today. This got him his divorce. As a result, eventually, the Bible was allowed into the hands of the common man (coincidence? ordained?), rather than just Catholic priests preaching via Latin vulgate/scriptures/masses, which most commoners did not speak, were illiterate, nor were they permitted to own a bible, on pain of death.
These were the times of Martin Luther and his 95 Theses challenges addressing Catholic Church corruption. Henry and Martin knew each other. Did not agree on many matters and let each other know as much. Exciting times indeed. These times were the start of the Gospel being available to all (who could read), to the unwashed masses, which had its roots in part, to Henry and Luther’s actions, regardless of their differences. The Bible was now being printed in English, albeit a very slow process that took many years to come to full fruition, culminating in the King James version via King James I in 1611. Though the 1599 Geneva Bible was developed ~50 years earlier.
It's worth noting here that Henry was pious, albeit his view was somewhat distorted from the environment/culture he was brought up in, yet he was very learned and well versed in spiritual matters. He was originally groomed as a child, up to his brother Arthur's death, to have a career in religious life, educated by the best England had to offer, and ultimately serve the Catholic church in some capacity, almost certainly a Cardinal … or better. But those were the times. We must look at these issues through the lens of those who lived 500+ years ago.
----Architecture was a huge Henry VIII effort. Many new building designs and techniques were employed under his charge. He built a tremendous number of structures, many of which were wonders and some that still stand today.
----Henry was an avid Natural Health advocate, even for those times. He is thought to have created many apothecary-like medicines, which were recorded in medical documents. “Henry’s Little Prescription Book” or “Dr. Buttes Diary” contains around 200 recipes for Tudor treatments and approximately half of the treatments are thought to have had Henry’s own hand in the creation of them. Medicine would never be the same. By Royal Decree he established what would become the Royal College of Physicians, and followed that up with an Act of Parliament which remains in force today. It was a first step to pry medicine away from superstition and setting the stage for medicine as a scientific pursuit.
---- Henry’s impact on English culture was just as profound. He patronized some of the best artists of his day and arts and architecture flourished during his reign. It was under Henry, not Elizabeth, that the great art forms of sonnet and blank verse were created. When he issued the first official Complete Works of Chaucer, Henry invented a national poet, a repository of England and Englishness. A literary past that would run alongside the new history of England created for his Church of England. In some ways, it was Henry who invented the very idea of what it means to be English.
---He was an accomplished musician, singer, poet, and developed/contributed to many modern musical concepts/styles, etc. Wrote a number of musical compositions, a few famous to this day.

Some seem to assume Henry was some sort of monster for his efforts to produce a male heir. I find that assessment rather dim.
