      @doom3798 3 года назад +896

      @Hi Lifg christopher mont: ‘everyone praises the lady’s beauty both of face and body’. another ambassador said the portrait of anne (which was considered very pretty at the time) was a true likeness. look up how henry and her met - he tried to surprise her and she didn’t recognise him and was frightened, which probably humiliated him (pathetic man that he was) and he decided from that day he could not be married to her.

    • @Laramaria2
      @Laramaria2 3 года назад +163

      @Hi Lifg her looks are a great mystery... There are many different reports about it... Most people believe that the reports saying that Anne was ugly came from Henry's friends and supporters but were lies to favor Henry's case.
      Many people believe that if the painting was misleading, Henry wouldn't have allowed Holbein to keep his head 😅 According to Dr. Kat from "reading the past", there was a beauty standard in Tudor court, so if she was ugly she wouldn't be allowed in court because it was required to be kinda of an ornament... And beauty is subjective anyway, so it is kinda hard to tell 😅
      I'm very inclined to believe that she was pretty, but Henry found her boring because she was more quite, reserve than he would like her to be and didn't know anything about music, dance, courtly love and all other things Henry liked and there is the "first meeting disaster" too 😬

      @doom3798 3 года назад +307

      @@thedougdimmadomeownerofthe9332 that’s wrong, children were still children and considered children back then, only noble houses arranged for their children to be married for political reasons but they werent to be together until they were at least 16 - also the life expectancy thing is misleading because it takes into account child mortality rates which were much higher, as 12% of children died in their first year. that’s why the average age of life is so low. but the average age of death in medieval times was actually 60s. idk why people believe that old people just didnt exist back then lmao its a really ridiculous myth when you think about it

      The truth is Henry didn't really think she was ugly either. He decided to reenact one of his favorite plays and dress as a servant for the first time meeting her. According to the play Anne was somehow supposed to recognize that Henry was king, fall head over heels and kiss him. Obviously she didn't, so Henry and his hurt feelings decided to spread the story that she was ugly.

      They also say, that Anne was dumb. However, she might have suffered under an even then backwards view on the education of women, esp if they were expected to be on top of some other court later in life.
      She had enough common sense to just yield to Henry's wishes regarding divorce and as she was later welcomed at court and treated respectfully by her "stepchildren" , we can only assume, that she wasn't that unpleasant overall.

    Catherine of Aragon: underrated, very intelligent and gracious.
    Anne Boleyn: Clever, manipulative, powerful but vulnerable. Vilified out of proportion; she was just trying to survive in a cruel world to women.
    Jane Seymour: didn't live long enough to p*** Henry off by showing her own opinions, but certainly had them. Might have been a decent queen if given a chance.
    Anne of Cleves: my favorite! Henry catfished her, not the other way around. She actually was very strong-willed and went on to live a wealthy, independent life after her divorce.
    Katherine Howard: Also vilified, but she was just a kid and in way over her head. She yet didn't have the political savvy of Anne, and ultimately met the same fate.
    Catherine Parr: Also strong-willed and unyielding. Kept her head in the worst circumstances. Was a decent stepmom to Elizabeth and probably helped shape her into the woman and ruler she became.

    In the story of Henry VIII, Jane Seymore is inevitably given the least attention when arguably she is the most important. Unprecedented among Queens of the time, like Ann or Elisabeth Woodville etc., who would immediately tried to consolidate power by maneuvering to get their relatives elevated in court, Jane did none of that. Instead she insisted that Mary (who was declared a bastard by Henry) be reinstated to her titles and thus back into the line of succession and prevented Henry from disinheriting Elizabeth after he beheaded her mother - both of which actually doesn't benefit her at all politically. She just had a big heart. Thus, for better or for worse, Jane had a direct hand in who would become the next 3 monarchs of England - her son Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth 1.

Her behavior as queen was loyal,brave, responsable and she was very loved by the people. She behavior as wife was the best, a loving wife of her husband . She was very intelligent, sensitive , cultured and she was a great beauty. When she arrived England people told that she was the most beautiful girl they have ever seen. The big pity is that she was 5 years older than Henry and, when they married she had suffered 7 years of privations and anguish.

    Though I am an Anne Boleyn's fanatic and love Katherine of Aragon, I feel that Jane Seymour isn't given the worth she has. At least, for what I know and what I've seen in the Tudors, she was a quiet but really unique woman, that desired no more than be happy the way she could (even though she had to tolerate Henry's infidelity) and help the others, like Mary Tudor and Elizabeth, that were not even her children. She also tried to take hold of the things that she could, empowering women and fighting subtly for the causes she believed in. That's why I have a lot of respect for her.

      She was also so smart! She is just as cunning, calculating, and intelligent as Anne and Catherine. No one talks about how she literally plotted to separate Anne and Henry (and the fact she had a bit of a mean streak). I feel like no one shows that part of her, which is sad because I think one of the reasons the wives are so interesting is that it's so apparent that every one of them was so smart. Anne gets the most attention, which makes sense since she played the game the hardest and caused the most change but I think sometimes it makes people ignore the other wives.
