Becoming the Queen of Hearts - The Royal Ballet's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

The Alice's Adventures in Wonderland cast and creative team give an insight into creating the much-loved character of the Queen of Hearts.
Royal Ballet Principals Zenaida Yanowsky, Sarah Lamb and Lauren Cuthbertson, Ballet Master Christopher Saunders and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon give a glimpse into the rehearsal studio into the creation of a modern classic.
Christopher Wheeldon's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland arrived on the stage in 2011 with a burst of colour, theatrical magic and inventive choreography. It was The Royal Ballet's first full-length work since 1995 and was instantly acclaimed as a classic. Joby Talbot's score combines sweeping melodies, which gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century, with contemporary effects. Bob Crowley's wildly imaginative sets and costumes draw on puppetry, projections and masks to bring Wonderland to life.
Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary characters down the rabbit hole: from the highly-strung Queen of Hearts, who performs a hilarious rendition of the famous Rose Adagio from The Sleeping Beauty; to dancing playing cards; a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. There is a love narrative for Alice and the Knave of Hearts, and they dance a tender pas de deux at the close of Act II. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll's story -- a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and an unhinged tea party are all created in vivid detail.
I would pay good money to see this play for the queen or hearts. she totally sold me. what great humor and dancers :).

You can just book tickets for it when its being run at the Royal Opera House. I'm sure other ballets do it but they might not be as good.

Oh my gosh! She's amazing! Its rare to find dancers who can combine acting and dancing quite flawlessly, not to mention comedy! Great dancer!

Zenaida is just phenomenal as the Queen of Hearts. She is an exquisite dancer, with sublime acting skills. Such a strong dancer to be able to use her technique, but still make it humorous. She is a great artist. She is my favorite for this part, and this part is my favorite character in this ballet.

Hope one day Christopher Wheeldon makes a ballet just for Zenaida :)

I have never laughed harder than when I saw her Queen of Hearts. In fact, most of our row at the ROH were in hysterics for the entirety of the Tart Adage. Absolutely brilliant, and I can't wait to see her again!
Beautiful Zenaida, I can't believe she's retiring after the end of this season! And I never got to see her live! sighs... :(

Still, after all those years, one of my favourite ballet scenes!!! Zenaida is *chefs kiss*. Her facial expressions, her body language...and it takes an incredible amount of talent to dance so badly on purpose and NOT hurt yourself!! Still...brava brava beautiful Zen!!! 👏
I was laughing so so hard during when I saw this live. I had tears in my eyes the whole time. My boyfriend (who is not an aficionado like me) enjoyed it immensely but the parody and satire was lost a bit on him. This entire ballet is exquisite!!
It is worth the price of admission to see the Red Queen and the Mad Hatter, if nothing else. I'm so glad I have this on DVD.
'Suitors' is also a pun because they are all different 'suits' of cards! Very clever!
Zenaida Yanoisky danced this role so beautifully! Her interpretation was hilarious and so original!

What great fun! This made me laugh, too. It must take some doing to dance deliberately badly, yet still in control. And I love Chris Wheeldon's work: he seems so mild-mannered, but so surprising and imaginative.
Hands down my favorite scene of all time. The perfect combination of artistry, technique, and humor.
I saw the last Performance in November 2012 in Toronto - wonderful, lots of humor, the audience raged from 3 years of Age up to 90.Felt like a kid in a candy store - what a treat.

Zen is such a brilliant actress. She has me in tears in dramatic roles and I saw her in A Soldier's Tale years ago and I was laughing so hard my abs were aching for days afterwards. I hope she continues to cast her magic over audiences for a long time...
I like the acting and comedy of this ballet. This artists are a joy to watch :)

I saw this in Movie theaters with the Met Opera group!! Phenomenal!!~ It was graceful, funny, ballet dancers and Zenaida as the Queen of Hearts was superb! I was laughing so much! Her dancing was amazing! Brava!!~ 🤗🥰🙏🏼💖💕
i saw this ballet. oh, good grief was it GOOD!! hard to really get across how amazing this ballet is, without whittering like a twit.
She portrayed that unbound wild feminine spirit so good!
What an enchanting cast, I am so glad to see Lauren here - her commentary was both observant yet lighthearted.
And the way she bounced her eyebrows at the end was just conspiratorial! Yes, there are many Aurora ladies out in the world, who would be happier if they took a page out of the queen's book
let's also acknowledge just how sweet and kind Lauren seemed; definitely an Aurora-spirit!

Zenaida is amazing, the best Queen of Hearts ever! The whole ballet is wonderful.
I was just in a ballet of Alice and we used the Dying Swan as our affectionate tribute... We all struggled to keep a straight face onstage as our Queen affectionately butchered it with the help of the King and myself... And now we all get to go out to the local cinema to see Zenaida do the Tart Adage! It's going to be amazing!

Theres a documentary at the moment on the bbc with this dancer where she is recovering from her knee operation and doing her last show as she retires from dancing. it was a really nice doc Xx

Now that Zenaida's retired, I'd love to see Cuthbertson as the queen, I think she'd almost have too much fun with it XD
i thought she was a bit uncreative with playing alice. it got a bit annoying to watch alice have the same reaction to pretty much everything in the play, and i wouldve liked to see her character more fleshed out. like, cuthbertson sorta just acted vaguely "young" but it wasnt enough.
Zenaida yankowsky of the Royal Ballet was so good. She towered over everyone and used that in the character so well. You would do so well in that role!

Unluckily I didn’t see this in person but I did see it broadcast live in a theatre and it was incredible! She was so funny but so beautiful! I would definitely recommend this to anyone whether a ballet dancer or a ballet hater it’s unlike anything I have ever seen!

I saw Alice's Adventures in Wonderland live with my mom and my goodness it was gorgeous and grand. I loved every moment of it. I'm so glad I got to experience it. Absolutely wonderful job by everyone

I first watched this and fell in love. I'm from Texas but my birthday happens a day before one of the shows so thank you Royal House because I'm now trying to come see this! It just looks fantastic, I've watched so many of these sneak peeks and I can't stop! I'm sure I'm even gonna get the DVD!!!!
What was the move she did at 1:15 ? It looked like a cartwheel but I'm sure they don't do them in Ballet..

All dance, theater and art is subject to changes and even trends. Artistic people must experiment.
You can find filmed versions of the adage online, and it is a cartwheel. It's definitely not a standard ballet move, bu the characters is supposed to be a comically bad dancer, so the fact that it looks out of place and weird works well for the character.
It might of been some acro version of a front walkover maybe??
Hello royal ballet, I would like to know, how or why did you make a new division inside the ballet, transforming the act one in two acts? (the small pas de deux of alice and the knave of hearts after the dutchess house, there is a big difference in this part between the 2011 dvd and the 2013 dvd)

And by the way, for me as an espectator, it made the ballet even more interessant and understandable. It was totally the cherry on top of the cake. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
