Built a garage almost exactly the same way about 5 years ago and it was absolutely rock solid. dramas that I came across was the flat roof, They love to leak and the concrete base, ordered ready mix and was too wet when poured and dried dusty. I would definitely go with an angled roof if I done it again and maybe sit the frame on a couple of courses of brick as the bottom of timber cladding goes manky quickly.
It looks amazing, started watching your videos for some plumbing advice and ended up on this series really good stuff. The only tiny thing is impact drivers hit 110 decibels which can cause hearing loss, I could be completely wrong but thought you might want to look into it
Great series of videos . I’ll be doing a 6x5 garage / workshop my self later in the year . These videos have inspired me to tackle most of the jobs myself. Can’t wait to see the end result and the costings 👍
This couldn't come at a better time i was planning on building a breeze block shed 4x2m this year but now i am contemplating doing it this way as i don't need to dig out foundations then and my ground is already pretty level as i leveled it all last year when i laid a patio for a hot tub and decided to re level the full garden at the same time, i originally decided on breeze block because i couldn't be bothered with wood rotting in 10 year and having to paint it every year, i never even thought of using metal cladding i cant wait to see the end result.
A great presentation and loving the project so far. In episode 1 or 2, you used a lockable straight edge to use with the circular saw - I tried to catch the name and make but couldn't. Would you happen to have a link to one? It could be my saviour - thank you and looking forward to episode 4.
Did a cold roof and EPDM last summer. I would’ve hated to have done it in the depths of winter with the amount of storms and rain we’ve had, so fair play!
great series... ive been watching in interest as im planning to build a triangular garage at the bottom of my trangular garden.... 3 walls instead of four
Great vid as always. FYI I bought two garage doors from TWF, I mentioned I saw your video and installed them last week as easy as your video showed. Awesome service from TWF and Google review left. Thanks for your video on the garage door 👍
I was considering a build of this size, but seeing how much time it's taken with help I may have to scale it back considerably as I'm so rural I'll be doing it all myself! (maybe "future proof" it by working out a modular system for the walls etc based around 8x4 panels....)
I am following your build very closely, including using the EcoScape cladding. I am struggling with the ladder overhang, how much ladder overhang did you allow for and did you use a single cladding length for the soffit? Appreciate any help you can offer, thanks.
Great informative videos on your workshop build, will follow a lot of your build on a workshop I'm planning. Instead of using a roller door I'm think of fitting second hand French Doors, am I OK screwing the French doors frame directly to the concrete base, or should there be an insulation layer between the floor and door frame? Reference using Noggins in between the roof joists, do the Noggins have to be 4" x 2" to allow airflow through the cold space, if 6" x 2" used wouldn't this block the air flow passage? Is 8 / 9mm OSB strong enough for the external walls? 👍
Cheers for another great video mate, did you need planning for this build? Won't be long before I make my second workshop, just want the next one to be as good as this build.
@@TheDIYGuy1 Yeh I believe it has to be within a certain percent of your outside space, if I'm right in thinking that. I just can't be arsed to be dealing with planning or building inspectors, which I'm sure I will do one day. I would find that nerve racking. So much "code" to be aware of I'm sure I would miss something silly yet critical. Also, this is a video I made a while back of my first "workshop conversion" build. If you have a moment, take a look. This video is gold mate...just in the planning process of a 8x4 mtr man cave and come across this...I've subbed and I'll look forward looking thru your previous video.....cheers for the upload
Thanks for this brilliant video. I have a question - do you need to cut a notch (is it a birdstooth?) in the rafters where it sits on the wall plates at the front and rear? Or is the angle so shallow it doesn't matter?
What span table did you use for your roof timbers?? As I can only see 6x2 c24 timbers good enough for a 3474mm span at 400 centres. Looking at building one above 30m2 and will need to meet regs so just curious. Love the content.
Where did you get the EDPM from? Did you just order one big sheet? Did the sheet come with all the glue etc to stick it to the roof? Thanks great vid showing product names etc. As I said before I’m interested in how you’re keeping this ventilated and mould free. Nice job mate.
All of this came from MKM building supplies as a kit. I gave them the measurements and they send over everything that’s needed. The brand of roofing is Firestone. Thanks
Hi mate, Total novice here building a workshop with my old man. Noticed a lot of people put a breathable membrane shell around the walls and roof of a building. We will have breathable membrane on the walls stapled between the frame and panels, and due to the roof ply already being in place, we can't apply it between that and the roof frame. We do have a DPM on top of the marine ply roof though to protect from the elements and will put corrugated roof on top that. Watching this, I see you have the same with breathable membrane on walls and DPM on roof. Any advantages/disadvantages to that? Are we missing out by forgetting to put it between the frame and roof and instead just having a DPM on top?
Thanks Cameron, very clear as usual. We're down in the far south west with very high UV in the summer - I can imagine the rubber drying and cracking after a few years, how long is the EDPM guaranteed for? Or would I be best to stick with a tin roof as was my original plan?
I watched your electrical video on 4 way switches, very well done, as is this. May I ask what qualification's you have? How did you learn so much?🤓 As you seem so generally knowledgeable I'm intrigued. Engineer? Good luck.
Thanks. I’ve a multitude of experience from time served in a few trades and homes renovated along the way. I also work alongside some amazing people who I learn from every single day and I pass on some of that knowledge.
Brilliant videos. So glad I’ve found your channel. Are you able to provide rough prices like you did for the base? Didn’t see those on the other episodes.
Hi there, brilliant videos, excellent resource for a fellow DIY'er such as myself! Did you create a pitch on the roof, and if so, how did you do it, i dont see any cuts in the roof joists, no firring strips, the walls look equal heights etc. Many thanks!
Why not align your roof joists with your 400 centre studs? Do you think just using screws to hold the joists will be sufficient. Would it have been worth using upside down joist hangers to secure the roof to the main building?
If you align with the wall uprights you would have to spike the joist down which takes longer. In a previous build I have done this method worked perfectly and the building stands as good as it did when I built it three years ago so I’m satisfied the method used is strong enough.

I’ve been enjoying you stuff for the last few months, question for you… I’m from the US and unless you’re in a dry climate like the southwest it’s kind of frowned upon putting a flat roof on because of water drainage, is that a concern for you at all?
Thanks. Whilst this is classed as a flat roof, it isn’t truly flat as we have a fall on our roof. More of this is explained in episode 3 where we built the walls.
The only issue I find with "flat" roofs is you sometimes end up with more water escaping down the sides and not down the slope of the roof but in the UK we don't have much choice due to the height restriction (2.5m).
I’m going to build a 8x6 shed in my back garden, the garden is already flagged if I level out the flags will I be ok just building the shed on them or will I need to have the shed slightly off the floor
Is there a part 5 to the workshop build series? On my list it says there's a hidden video and when I try to unhide it comes up as "private" and is inaccessible.
