    I have done 16 extensions in UK so far and I am still amazed by the Regs in this country. Stuff like this would be burnt away and guy who did it jailed for life in europe :D
    But hey ho! Easy life. Everyone is happy.
    As much as I can complain about Regs, your job is great, bit slow but giving you are filming it, great!
    Thanks for sharing.
    Stay safe!

    This is a great trick. Im by no means an experienced joiner, but ive built about 6 or 7 roofs and love watching videos on it. What a great method for the angle.
    I personally cut a block the size of the remaining timber after the birdsmouth and measure from top of the wall plate to top of the block ive cut. And that gives me a measurement to where my plumb cuts need to be.

    I think these builders who make vids of their work put the others to shame. Your skill, technique, quality control, site safety and cleanliness is there for all to see. Not just the end result but the hidden stuff that is so hard to see unless you are on top of every stage. One single mistake and all those that don't have the confidence to broadcast will pile in! The fact that you do this means you'll always be up at the top of the trade and customers can engage you with confidence. Thank God for RUclips!

    Lean to, roof Mr A ! it’s leaning towards not leaning as well !
    That’s enough of that.
    I am pleased to see that there is enough space beneath the sills to install your top flashing, I’ve come across several sets of drawings which ignore this, I think with the intention of getting a specific head height and tiling fall.

    Trying to get all the joints bang on is so dependent on so many variables ie the sole plate being dead level the outside wall being real parallel with the existing wall the nominal timber sizes being all the same size and square generally nowadays from my experience u can’t have all of them things falling in to place ( especially the timber sizes) so it’s always a compromise on a drawing it works perfectly but in reality it rarely does so u compensate as all chippies do on site and make it work but for me u still can’t beat traditional roof construction so great tutorial

    • @Mr_A_Builders
      @Mr_A_Builders  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi and thanks for the comment. I’ve only ever used this method to get the plumb cut of a common rafter and therefore the degree pitch of the roof. I then use my roofing square set to the degree pitch on the hip scale to do the hip cut. However, it would be worth a go as long as you have got your height above plate off the common rafter first, transferred it onto your hip using the same batten screwed to the top. Don’t forgot to cut you wall plate corner off first to 45 degrees so you can get a full bearing of your seat cut. Hope that makes sense 👍🏻

    Great video thanks. Building a garage with similar roof structure and this is very helpful. Especially the tip for raising the rafter up to allow for the birdsmouth cut. One question, do you think it is worth using joist hangers on a job like this? Or is just nailing as good?

      Hi Lennon I’m really pleased to see that young lads are still taking up the trades and not aiming for the next Mr Beast. Unfortunately our roofs come as part of the extensions/lofts we do so I wouldn’t be able to pin point when the next one is as yet. I’d be more than happy to help you out otherwise. All the best with your apprenticeship mate and thanks for watching. 👍🏻

      No thats fine mate, in all honesty i knew it was a long shot but i thought it was worth a go. Due to the nature of my job its hard to get evidence for things like fitting a staircase, doing cut roofs etc.

      What I suggest Lennon is keep and eye on our content so you know when we are doing a job you need evidence for in the future and give us another poke and we can see if we can get you some evidence mate no probs. Cheers Lennon

      Send us a list a list of things that you need evidence for to our email that's in our bio please mate, I'll take a look and when we've got a job that's on that list I'll get in touch and you can join us for the day. How's that mate?

    Once you have a pattern rafter done you can mark out on it. cut trimmers, part rafters, ladder. It looks like nothings got done. And then the nail gun gets it all on in a little over an hour.

    I don't know if this has been asked already but I was expecting a birdsmouth at the bolted wall plate end too. Will just a few nails be sufficient support for all that weight of the roof?

    • @Mr_A_Builders
      @Mr_A_Builders  Год назад

      Hi Ian. It’s not the first time it’s been asked mate so all I can say is how can decades of carpenters before me be wrong all of a sudden. It must be the new trend 😂👍🏻

      @@Mr_A_Builders Oh I wasn't doubting that you were doing it correctly. I suppose I didn't phrase the question very well.
      I wondered if I had missed anything or any other supports because with all of that weight it seems a lot for nails to support.
      I suppose I was hoping you would tell me some scientific jargon about lateral forces and what not, so that when I build mine the same way, I don't lie awake at night worrying that the nails will rust and everything collapses.
      Anyway...brilliant guide to simplify the process. Thank you.

      I’m still waiting for the scientific jargon myself Ian to come from the people who say I’m a cowboy for doing it this way but they have never come up with any. However I’m still on the case myself and WILL explain in full both methods and any evidence I’ve found from reputable sources. Thanks for watching Ian 👍🏻

    Great vids. Thanks for posting. I have a lean to on my old 1840's stone garage. The roof is slate tile and is laid directly on the stone. The lathes are rotten and it needs replacing So I want to add a bolted wall plate and rebuild using the process you outlined in this video. The stone where the bolted wall plate will be fixed is pretty wavy. I was thinking I could use packers where needed when bolting it to the stone would that work or would you advise something different?

    • @Mr_A_Builders
      @Mr_A_Builders  Год назад +2

      Hi Steve my first thought about the bolted wall plate would be to bolt on temporary in place and cut above and below with a grinder. Remove the plate and remove the face of the stone between these cuts with a breaker to form a flatter surface rather than packers and then fix using a two part resin you can push all thread into which you can buy from Screwfix. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍🏻

    Instead of using nails, is there a very good screw that could be used to secure the rafters to the wall plates?

    • @Mr_A_Builders
      @Mr_A_Builders  2 месяца назад +1

      Nails have been used for decades so who are we to argue😁 however you can get hex head Strutural timber screws in various lengths so you could use those straight through the top of the rafter, through the birdsmouth and into the wall plate. I have used them before but mainly for roofs where 4” or 5” timber is used. 👍🏻
