Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior are two of wrestlings most popular superstars of the late 80s and early 90s. Many fans think of either Hogan or The Warrior when they think of the WWF, two legitimate household names who garnered a massive fan following during the glory days of the World Wrestling Federation.
Hulk Hogan had been the WWF's number 1 superstar since making his way to the company in the early to mid 80s. Towards the end of the decade, a new superstar was capturing the imagination of fans across the world, and his name was The Ultimate Warrior. While Randy Savage had gained a considerable fan following in 1988, the Warrior's popularity was so huge that it matched Hulk Hogan in terms of fan support. The decision was made then to have the WWF's 2 top babyface competitors square off in a match at WrestleMania. Billed as "The Ultimate Challenge", Hulk Hogan put his WWF title on the line against The Ultimate Warrior, a man who also put his Intercontinental championship up for grabs in the very same match. This was unprecedented, the WWF went against the grain and put 2 of their most beloved stars in the ring to go head to head. This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at the match.

I still remember when my dad surprised my sisters and I with this PPV. We were watching something on TV that night and he casually tells my mom to flip the channel to some obscure Channel that we didnt have and BOOM Wrestlemania. He then quickly says, " Oops wrong channel." My sisters and I were like no leave it here haha. We were so happy.

I was 8 at the time. I grew up in a small town and I bet i rented this VHS from the local video store at least 30 times. I was that kid who was waiting on the day the new realeses came out so I could rent the pay per view from 4 or 5 months prior lol
Matt Yarbrough those were great times. I must have rented WM IV 12 times. I’d rent all the Super Tapes...91 SS and 92 Rumble were both rented many times as well.

30 years later and I still can't believe that the Warrior won! I thought that Hogan was going to win for sure when he kicked out of the Warrior Splash and started hulking up, like he always does in his matches. I leaped out of my chair and started jumping around like an idiot when Hogan missed the leg drop and Warrior pinned him. Best. Match. Ever. (At the time, of course)

I was a little kid back then. This still gives me goosebumps and emotions til this day and I'm 40yrs old. You right it's not always about the in ring. It's how it made you feel that was the most important part of it. Thanks for the trip back to my childhood!

I feel Hogan gets a bit too much stick at times, this match was great by anyones standards, his Japan work and the fact he was one of the very few able to carry warrior to a good match, speaks volumes.
Once he got to the top of the mountain he knew that he didn't need to do much technical wrestling. He was smart in that he knew when to give more and he knew when he could get away with less. Why go the extra mile when literally nobody wants to see that from you? He was much more than the Hulk up, leg drop and pose, but people didn't want any more than that back then. As the video said, wrestling is more than just the in-ring moves, sometimes (probably most of the time) it's about the emotion these guys can draw out of the crowd. Hogan was very good at reading and working the crowd.
Hogan was actually a very good wrestler for his size, but his gimmick under WWF meant he never had to use it, but in Japan and even against the Rock, he pulled out great matches.
if you watch his matches vs the Rock, and vs Brock Lesnar, it is obvious that Hogan was actually a God in the ring

Yeah, it's likely that Hogan realized at a point that he didn't need to try anymore because of his rise to superstardom, but demographics played a huge part in Hogan's decision to wrestle simpler. American pro-wrestling favored the gimmick over in-ring ability, it's why when he worked matches in Japan, he was far more technical than he let off during his time in the WWE. Hogan was smart and knew what each demographic favored, and it must also be said that he was trained by Hiro Matsuda. If Matsuda trained you, you weren't a crummy wrestler. Check out his 1991 match against Genichiro Tenryu, you can see Hulk doing drop toeholds and enziguris, it's surreal.

Correct. I completely stopped watching this around ‘92. It got really stupid. They added female wrestlers (a lot of them). Most of the fan favorites (Hogan, Savage, Warrior) went to the NWA. Wrestlers started to die or just leave. Fell in love with the NBA and NFL and forgot about this. I wonder why people today still watch this garbage

@@tsbirthdeath you are aware that there is a generation who grew on the ruthless aggression era and early days of the PG era and love it. Some have good memories with WWE between 2011 and 2014.
I've noticed that its always the era a person grew up in that they have a special connection to and any other era, fails to compare because that initial magic has faded.

My mom rented me the VHS, I watched it alone. I was CRUSHED when Hogan lost. Actually cried. I was 10. Still can't believe it.

I'll be honest and admit I was genuinely shocked when I watched this live on Sky TV. Hulk Hogan seemed to win all the time and now he'd just lost. Cleanly pinned in the middle of the ring.
Yeah, Hogan matches were so formulaic back then. The finish would always be opponent does his finisher. Hogan looks done. Pin, 1, 2, Hogan kicks out does his Hulk out, big boot, leg drop, 1,2,3. I was a Warrior fan back then, I thought there was no way that they would let him beat Hogan clean. Then Warrior pressed him, and went for the pin. Hogan hulks out and i went "aargh here we go." Then the Warrior dodged the leg deop and the rest is history. I saw it at a bar. It was my 12th birthday.
He still kicked out at 3.1 because he was still concerned about losing his spot brother brother.

@@skateman7151 yup, my birthday is april 1st 1978. My dad knew the owner of the bar. He let me and my friends came with thieir parents it was an awesome night. Its not like i was doing shots or anything. We ate nachos and super chili dogs and it was one of the best moments of my childhood. Everybody was partying and celebrating.

The 80's and mid 90's where my childhood and it saddens me to no end knowing that many of my heroes as a child have long since passed. Its surreal
I remember watching this as a kid along with my friends. We weren't really fans of Hogan. We were tuning in for and rooting for The Ultimate Warrior! Hogan was the guy that was already somewhat old news before we even became wrestling fans. The Warrior was the one who brought the real excitement for us young fans.
Quite easily the best wrestling channel in terms of content and presentation. Love this channel

S. Wright the only thing that didn't make it work was the arena. Had it been something larger than life would have been better. Same case with WM 2000. They should have had that Ironman match at Mania. It was just too good. And business was more successful in 2000 than in 1991. So I don't get why not go to The Los Angeles Memorial Collaseum instead of going back to Anaheim. They had a chance to write that wrong.

To be there @ WM6 as a Warrior fan being 11 yrs old at the time It was just incredible! One of the greatest experiences of my young life. Got to see so many legends wrestle in person before many of them passed away. Great video
Those two entrance themes mashup really well.
This was my first WrestleMania and 11-year-old me was a big fan of both Hogan and Warrior, leaning more toward Warrior, and I remember being so hyped for this and wishing our cable company offered pay-per-view. I only heard the result at school from someone whose uncle in another town got to to see it. Say what you will about the match and the event but it and the build-up to it will always hold a special place in my heart!

This was and still is one of the top wrestling matches in history, not in wrestling abilities, but the aura and showmanship of it all.

Totally agree... I'm an 80s kid so just been rewatching the royal rumbles from the first one and it's great seeing these again after all this time
The lead up the WM6 could have been done it the same way as WM5. Savage had the talent to carry that story for the full year ably supported by Hogan and Elizabeth. A long build up between Warrior and Hogan would have run out of legs in short time. They did the right thing with a shorter build. Face v Face was pretty much unheard off back then. That held enough interest in itself.
Most awesome match ever! The two biggest forces in the history of wrestling at their peak, stuff of legend!
I'd like to see a video on Tajiri... great competitor, won a few titles, massively over with fans and one of the few to receive a standing ovation after his last match
This was the greatest match at that time two baby faces Hogan vs Warrior in there prime
You know, Hogan cops a fair bit of flack for his lack of wrestling skill. While in the US and Canada at least, his style was typically that of a brawler. He was a power wrestler who used power moves, kicks, punches, slams etc and would never have matched it hold for hold with a Bret Hart or Mr Perfect. But if you see his matches in Japan, he did put a lot more actual wrestling into his matches. The guy was actually a very good worker in the ring, a lot better than he's given credit for and he managed that night in Toronto to bring out one of what I consider to be the Warrior's two best matches (the other being his WM7 match against Savage).
My favorite buildup to my first WrestleMania. Still my favorite match. They used the royal Rumble - the actual Rumble for a couple of WM6 matches. This was why I became a wrestling fan. Straight magic status . . .
At the end of the match, Jesse Ventura actually said something positive about Hogan, saying: "I do believe Hulkamania will live forever!"
Yeah, and if he had won, Jesse would've said "That's it, I'm coming out of retirement to win this title!"
That’s a great moment, when even one of Hogan’s biggest detractors for years took a moment to give props.

This match was front page news (Toronto Sun) Good memories.
That moment with them face to face in the middle of the ring was monumental for wrestling!! They didnt have to wrestle the crowd was mesmerized with them just standing there!! I remember watching that Live as a kid!!

Still the greatest ever wrestlemania match immho. Sure, they wasn't the greatest of wrestlers, but that didn't matter to us. These two (plus Savage) were the most exciting wrestlers to watch as a kid in the late 80s n early 90s. It's hard to say in words just how huge this match was all over the world. Good times.

I was a huge Hulk Hogan mark when I was a kid. I legitimately cried when Hogan lost. My parents were upset as they were fans as well. Good times.

Thank you for acknowledging the emotion over technicality. Nobody seems to bring that out in these bios and it’s about the excitement. It’s entertainment and not how many moves you have. Everyone has their own opinion but emotion wins for me over technical moves!

I loved Hogan v Warrior. I was 11 at the time, a huge fan of both wrestlers but, enjoyed the Ultimate Warrior's character so much more than Hulk Hogan's. I was extatic when Warrior won the match, my hero had become the Champion. Good times 🙂

I was a massive ultimate warrior fan I couldn’t believe he beat hogan clean in the ring maybe it was the bright colours and face paint and that crazy entrance warrior did I do think he was underrated in the wrestling ability
What? "Underrated" in wrestling ability? Are you kidding me? He was absolute garbage in the ring. This isn't even debatable. He was over because of his over the top gimmick, being massively juiced and having a great physique, and being a product of the times. He WAS NOT a worker. Period, the end...
YQu're being TrQlled hogan also garbage in the ring, very limited moves/skills, very similar to john cena actually, they’re both just very fortunite that the wwf saw them as the faces of the company, there’s many many more skilled wrestlers than hogan from the same time, machoman... jake roberts... mr perfect..

OSW does better and are a cleaner, funner, and more entertaining presentation. They review entire events, their build ups, and then their opinions and jokes. This guy is quite biased in his videos. Not much different than many of the other history revising sMarks on RUclips.

Would have meant even more if Hogan didnt try to kick out right at the 3 count. Looking back now it didn't do Warrior any favours & his Title reign was doomed from the start
I mean I think they did it the right way. It's not like the Starrcade 1997 ending. It made Hogan look strong in defeat and he still lost clean. The problem was when he was in WCW and was telling Eric what to do and going into business for himself. Like the finger poke of doom and no selling Vader's finisher

I watched this match last month, on the 1st, to commemorate its 30th year (UNBELIEVABLE!) anniversary and I still get excited watching it! I felt like 16 year old me watching this and just being overwhelmed with what I was about to witness. One of my best friends and I watched this live when it happened, even though we actually didn't pay for the pay per view. This was back in a time that if you had cable and if you tuned in to the ppv channel, you could see the action without sounds sometimes or vice versa. That is how we were able to watch the whole show and we were stunned to see Warrior getting the rare clean pin on Hogan! I will never, ever forget how awesome that was and I was a Hulkamanic! Awesome video, Sir, as usual! Be safe!

Fun fact. Hogan can actually wrestle. Check out his matches in NJPW. In WWF Hogan wrestled this simple style because it worked. The audience were into that style. In other promotions he bumped a lot.
Hogan tried to kick out after the 3 count because he only got pinned by a quick splash he wasn't badly hurt by the move so he tried to kick out but was too late...it will look too fake if he laid there pretending to be hurt from a bloody splash

I heard in an interview, which I don’t remember where I saw it but Hogan had said that he wanted to turn heel after the match which is probably why he did what he did in the match. Of course it didn’t happen because Vinny Mac didn’t want him too.

Royal Rumble 1990 was my first WWF PPV. Sky TV had just started showing WWF in the UK and the popularity of it was exploding.
I knew who Hogan was, but the Warrior was still a bit of a mystery to me. When the ring was cleared and the 2 men came face to face it was spine tingling! ... You knew something big was happening.
I don't think the match at Wrestlemania could have been any better all things considered ... It's amazing it didn't end with some kind of run-in or controversy causing Hogan to lose.

If you go back an watch the match. Watch how Earl almost botched the ending as he handed The Warrior the Championship Belt when it was scripted for Hogan to hand the belt to The Warrior as we see he did at the end.

Say what you want about the actual wrestling in the match, but you cannot say this isn't a classic. 5 star match in my opinion.
There's more to wrestling than Indy Show high spots(which are more often botches than not btw) and having 142 mat wrestling holds and transitions. The "sMark" wrestling style that is often attempted in wrestling now is one of the reasons the product is trash. It caters to a very small, very loud niche in the wrestling fandom and literally no one else...
When honkey tonk said he would “fight anyone” and The Warrior came out! That was AMAZING! My 8 year says that’s one of his favorite moments and he just watched it on RUclips (over and over).. that was great.

Savage vs Hogan at WrestleMania V was bigger and more successful. WrestleMania V drew more than WrestleMania VI did in the PPV buyrate department. On top of that, Warrior didn’t draw nearly as well as the WWF was hoping he would in house shows.
