    We cannot underestimate what a big star Sgt Slaughter was at the time. He was a GI Joe character and that's why it was so devastating to have him turn his back on America.

    • @gst013

      He was an old, broken down midcarder. It really wasn't anything other than shock value for the sake of shock value, and in the end it just killed that Wrestlemania.

    I actually liked Slaughters heel run in 1990-91 a lot more than most. It was a huge shock and slaughter was great in the role. I think the only real complaint you could have is that it was just too on the nose for most fans who wanted to escape the real world for a few hours. If the story had been different, let’s say if slaughter was just pissed off about having to find mainstream success outside of wwe because of hogan stealing his spot, and now he’s back to destroy hulkamania, it would’ve been a money match.

    I’ve always thought that it was a huge detriment on the Warrior’s run to have Hogan around. They should have let him be the WWF’s harbinger for an entire year and then evaluate if he was drawing or not, but by keeping Hogan around, the ultimate politician, his run was doomed from the get go. Rude was great but no one thought he was a threat to the Warrior’s title. When finally warrior got a great program with Savage, they took the belt off him. As ever, Hogan’s successor was set up to fail.

They then proceeded to throw all these pictures with Slaughter poorly cropped and placed into pictures with Hussein. I remember one, where there was a parade, and Hussein was in the back of a car, waving at people, and they had Slaughter standing up in the back seat flexing his muscles at the crowd. I seem to have a memory of the kind of, "recovery" that they tried to do to walk back this angle a little by claiming that Slaughter was lying about him and Hussein being best friends, and it all being a ruse. One thing that stands out to me about WM7 is the IC title match. Big Boss Man went through the whole Heenan family (what was left of it) and got his IC title shot. It's one of those things where there is a big build up and then nothing. Boss Man wins by DQ and walks out with no belt and as far as I know no rematch. Do you think the original plan was for Boss Man to win the title and things changed when Bret Hart went to singles?

    • @raphaelmorrata8905
      @raphaelmorrata8905 4 года назад

      I think the bookers did n t believe in boss man as ic champ. At that time , the ic champ was use to push to the WWF title. And there is no way boss man would have been wwf champion. But the fans liked him, he was a good midcarter so a win by dq was the best option for him

    • @jameswarner5878
      @jameswarner5878 4 года назад +1

      @@raphaelmorrata8905 I disagree. The only IC to WWF champions at the time were Macho Man and Ultimate Warrior. Bret's push as WWF champion came as a surprise and out of necessity due to what was happening in 1992. I highly doubt that in 1991 they envision Bret Hart as the world champion. It wasn't until the end of 1996 that you see more IC champions moving on to WWF champion. If we start with Macho Man in 1986 we have 20 individual IC champions and only 5 went on to be WWF champion.
