This story may have been McMahon's attempt to revive the renegade rep of ECW by positioning himself to be hated. The company got to fight directly against one of their worst actual villains. It may have worked if more ECW originals were properly involved.
I don’t get how people don’t get Vince was trying to keep everyone afloat. He gave them talent and cash infusions and when they yanked he helped them by absorbing them and letting them stay ecw. Something he would never have allowed wcw to do. He hired Paul Hayden and everyone else ( they literally tried to keep new jack. They couldn’t sue to insurers saying they would not insure the match’s or shows new jack was on. Also a lot of wet talent protested as new jacks move set was limited to hitting you with stuff and stabbing you with a real knife. Something he has just done to another wrestler with zero explanation) Vince tried to keep everyone on and ECW going and this story line was a way to help them pop. The issue was ECW fans left before the ink was dry because they were little cry babies who didn’t like wrestling and just liked violence. And to be fair a lot of the big names like dreamer, and sand man had serious health and substance issues. They couldn’t compete with the insane scedual snd rigor the wwf/wwe had for their guys. Vince had an obsession with roused out huge dudes. How’s sand man gonna comets with that without massive ring work skills? And don’t get me wrong I loved ecw but it was less skill and more art. They took huge bumps but they were real. Where as wwf was about bumping with as little risk possible making cash and moving to the next town. It’s sad that so many people don’t get that ecw died because the fans didn’t stick around to support the guys. Because we could have gotten to see a sandman doing DDP style works or Tommy dreamer doing technical match’s without having to jump off of the rafters of cut their heads open for real to date the blood lust of the fans.. and many ecw guys stayed on as vince loved them. Tax, haymen, foley ( many times ) to name a few.

To me Durag Vince was the Mr. McMahon characters final form. Right after this gimmick they did the limo explosion which coincided with the Benoit tragedy and imo Vince was never the same on air character since. He came back for the Bret angle in 2010 and made other sporadic appearances but he was never the off the wall, manic, maniacal Mr. McMahon like he was from 98-07.

I told him about Reliving the War, and somehow the topic drifted away from the Attitude Era to me showing him clips of Durag Vince. The fact that you'd drop a video on that exact topic immediately after is wild to me, thank you so much for this. Durag Vince is surreal.
