Good afternoon, I have listened to all the turfcast episodes atleast twice. I appreciate all the good information. After one year of lawn care I am looking into getting a degree in turf management or soil science. In your next episode would you be able to do a short segment on what degree Ryan has and job market. Thank you. Love all the videos.
Ryan please do more of these podcast! Absolutely amazing
We are recording these weekly so thanks for watching/listening
Tremendous video and collaboration for anybody looking to improve their lawn this fall, have already watched it twice. The two of you certainly have a good rapport and have the ability to explain things in a way that is easy to understand.
ABSOLUTELY love this kind of lawn care vid! Just good honest lawn care information. Love all the technical information mixed in with the average guy lawn convo........Ryan Please Keep bringing back Ryan.
We are doing a weekly show. Probably just podcast form in the future
Wow! Ryan is a genius! Glad to hear KBG was spoken of so highly! People look at me funny when I killed off my beautiful TTTF for a mono stand of Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass. It’s fantastically dark especially with a 8-1-8 monthly spoon feed and a occasional hit of liquid iron if I really want to put the hurt on the neighborhood🤣🤣🤣
Please let Ryan know that he was correct on syringing. I learned the hard way not to syring TTTF. It seemed fine for about a month. Now it has caught up with me. The only thing that has saved me is my fungicide program. Learning the hard way.....
I’m too dressing and overseeding this fall. Great info. Appreciate the Ryan’s :-) Thank you both !
Hello Ryan,
First of all I wanted to say thank you for providing such an informative video on fixing a lawn. I enjoyed watching and I learned a lot. You are one of my go-to sources for lawn care, and I have subscribed to your channel.
Being that I’m planning on doing a moderate lawn renovation this fall, I wanted to lay out my plan for you, and hopefully receive some feedback as to how to improve it in order to achieve a successful result. I have 22,000 sq ft of lawn and I’m seeking the most economical route to renovate it. It has been neglected for over a decade and has been overrun primarily by Wild Violet and Ground Ivy. This past May I began applying products such as Scott’s Triple Action, Scott’s Soil Improver and High Yield Triclopyr Ester (to eradicate the the WV and GI.
Following is my plan:
STEP 1: Kill off as many weeds as possible. In my case I had large, lingering patches of Wild Violet and Ground Ivy, which I treated multiple times with High Yield Triclopyr Ester. I wasn’t able to completely eradicate them, but I came close.
STEP 2: I’m planning on renting a power thatcher with a bag, and clear out as much thatch build up as possible.
STEP 3: Being that my lawn is very bumpy, I plan on ordering 10 yards of quality, screened topsoil and apply it with a wheelbarrow and a lawn leveling rake.
STEP 4: One week following this procedure - which is my target over seeding date - I plan on renting a power aerator and a slice seeder. I will aerate the entire lawn first, and then I will follow that with the slice seeding in a cross hatch fashion.
STEP 5: I plan on broadcast spreading a starter fertilizer. Being that I will be planting Johnathan Green Black Beauty Ultra, I was going to apply their starter fertilizer over the top.
It’s at this stage where my questions arise. Must I roll the newly planted seeds if they are power seeded into the ground? Do I need to cover the seed work and starter fertilizer to keep birds off the lawn?
* I rented a Bluebird thatcher this past weekend and despite having the blades at the highest setting, it really tore up my lawn by cutting deep grooves and scalping high spots down to bare ground. Being that this machine did so much damage, I’m considering not doing the slice seeding. After finishing the power thatching phase I inspected the underside of the machine and discovered that there was play on one side of the rake tine shaft, so it was actually digging down into the ground harder than it should have. Instead of spinning true, the shaft was wobbling and hammering into the lawn.
However I didn’t understand that the machine was defective because I had never used one before this.
Please offer any advice as to how I can repair my 22,000 sq ft lawn the most economical way possible.
Thank you and I look forward to your reply.
**In the aftermath of the damage created by the power thatcher, I’m wondering if over seeding is the best way forward. It wasn’t my plan to do a total renovation because I was afraid of biting off more than I could chew. It’s just me doing all this intensive prep work.
Matt
I reaaaaaaaly wish there was someone with a show this regular or informative in my neck of the woods (Birmingham Al)
I like the dormant seeding here in northern Ohio. I scarify in the fall and drop seed in February. No watering, and the freezing and thawing moves the seed into the soil. I have been successful many times even with complete renovation.
Two guys who have probably forgotten more about lawns than I will ever know. 👍
BTW twice baked pizza is best!
Wow. I was planning on overseeding this fall but now i am scared. maybe i should torch it and do a full reno! decisions, decisions. great video btw
I kind of like the dormant overseeding idea. My dad once told me that the best time to throw down seed is right before the last snow of the winter.
Would love to see you talk about warm season strategies in one of the next ones. Specifically about overseeding Bermuda with rye during the fall season where the warm season grasses are dormant. What’s the best way to prepare the seed bed without causing issues with spring green up? I’ve seen people have issues if they go too aggressive with fall verticutting. When is the ideal time to spray out the rye? How can I avoid weeds since I’m not able to use a pre-emergent? What rate on Tnex should I run in order to slow the Bermuda down? Would love to see these sorts of topics discussed since we are almost in the season for it.
Great Videos, I know for a fact that I will watch it again 👍😎 I am definitely looking forward to starting my lawn rejuvenation this fall!!
Love the show and the top notch info that goes with it 👍
I couldn't wait for this day! Thanks guys for everything you do have a great day.
I met Lushy last Thursday night. I can confirm, he told me that he had watched Episode 1 twice at that point. I had seen the notification, but hadn't watched it yet... until I got home.
I live in the NW and have three dogs. Year after year I have multiple areas in my yard that are dead from dog urine. Grass won't grow in those areas or I finally think it's gonna grow only to have it die. I've added yards and yards of new dirt to more expensive seed(Pennington, Scott's) I have a sprinkler system so watering is not a problem other then keeping me broke.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Great content!
Thank you both for putting this together
Was all set for an overseed with a plan in place but after watching this, I changed to a 2 part reno split between this year and next.
Interesting. What did you change and why?
@@fieldsource9146 First off...thank you both for doing these videos...very helpful and thanks for reaching out to find out more about my comment. What changed was when you did the car analogy. I kid, I kid...kind of. I want that thick, dark green lawn that was mentioned i.e. the Mustang and I do have some good KBG in spots of my front yard which is the predominant grass type. However, the park lawns and the area on one side of my driveway which is ~2100 sq ft is filled with clumping tall fescue and the stalky rye grass. There is some decent KBG in that area too though. I live here in Ohio also (south of Dayton) and the summer took its toll on all of my front yard as well (I was late on starting the irrigation). I don't want to be in a situation where I overseed for the next several years only to be unhappy with the results (color differences, quality grass compared to existing turf, etc.) and then decide to go full reno at that point and wishing I would have done it from the get go. Being unhappy with the results and wishing a full reno was done was not a unique to this video as that thought was conveyed in other forums as well. With going full reno, my biggest struggle now is whether to do TTTF or KBG. The front is in full sun all day, but I am not scared off by maintenance and water, but I don't have an in-ground sprinkler system. One day I lean towards KBG, then next TTTF. Decisions, decisions. But I will do part of the front this year and the rest of the front next year.
Great info! Thank you, I'm prepping for my overseeding project this fall, really good info.
100% a "like" as soon as heard "Go Browns" (would have anyway)
Great video! Keep em coming! So much to learn!
Great video and discussion. Helped me a lot w info I needed on over seeding
Now, how am I gonna find a place at work for the next 1.3hrs to watch?🤣👊
Yes! These are awesome! Keep it up guys!!
Great topic and love the forum.
Did they ever get to discuss sod in the future? Interested in that topic
I'm here in NE Florida, high 80s-90s temp wise and 80%+ for humidity. I dread it but I love being out there in the sun. Last thing GO JAGS!!!
Ryan definitely likes the grass 😆
I am doing my lawn renovation NOW.... Just got my seed
WHAT? what zone are you in? its been 90+ and DRY in MICHIGAN I cant imagine the rest of the country...
Ryan Rochford I’m in central Illinois. I won’t seed until around late August.
Can you slowly overseed with an elite cultivar? Is it worth it? I did a lawn reno last year I used Scott’s tall fescue mix bc I didn’t know any better. I did everything I’ve learned here to a T spent hours and hours and I’m disappointed in a lot of the quality grass I’ve gotten from Scott’s very inconsistent looking.
Thanks for the great info from you both. Go Browns!
These are awesome please keep doing these!!
The local sod farm, as mentioned in the vid, is a good seed source because they will often sell their sod blend, an athletic blend, and a shade mix. Never found a better mix of local performance and price
Great info! Keep it going guys!
Love these podcasts!Love the 411. I’m such a geek for this stuff!
Thanks for the talk.
Just throwing it out there...Home Depot sells Water Saver grass seed by Barenbrug which is like 40% RTF. Not all big box grass seed is mediocre stuff that people assume it is. Anyways, great podcast and perfect timing! I think this just changed my mind about overseeding vs. full renovation. I'm too nit picky I just need to bite the bullet now and do a full reno!
Great info again! Thanks to you both!
D&k shoutout! Been using them this year and like their products.
Great video! Planning on overseeding with some elite KBG (Midnight? Bewitched? Suggestions?) Off topic. Having some rain lately. Last two mornings found several areas with tiny white toadstools. Should I worry or let them do their thing? Thanks for the great videos.
We need some rain out here to bring some green back to our lawns
Was going to hold off On overseeding my Scott’s sun and shade lawn with Some quality Barenbrug kgb mixture? Blend?
After listening to this. I think I will proceed and continue to keep it moist until it establishes
I like the cut of this guys jib.
Going to try and do my overseeding this weekend (7-31) Im in michigan, temps are going to be around 80 for day time temps and low 60s or upper 50s at night. I have irrigation. I know its a little early, but id like to have it established before we really cool down and get heavy fall rainfall and all my seed washes. I think in michigan the ideal time is mid to late august.
There is no better hat!
Great information from both of you guys! Let's get Ryan D a better camera stand cause RIP his video, which was funny. Felt like I was sliding out of my seat!
Great info! Enjoyed it
thanks guys great advice
Hahaha, "get it up, in a moist environment"
My man
GREAT info for us Buckeye guys, here in Columbus!
O-H
208 Sessions! Good stuff, Ryan!
Hey Ryan, thank you for putting out consistently quality lawn care videos! I was curious about your thoughts on the Scotts Turf Builder Fertilizers that you use 4x a year. Also, in the cool season grass areas, when aerating and overseeing in the early Fall, how do you avoid not trampling or blowing away the seeds/seedlings when clearing Fall leaves? THANK YOU!
Overseed no later than September 1st so you don't have to worry about leaves
How often should you de-thatch a year? Also, is overseeing required every year?
Really depends on grass types. Shouldn't need to be every year in most cases but lots of variables
I’m getting some RYAN KNORR grass seeds!!Let’s see when you get their Ryan, your own grass type. Ma Meng, thanks for your share homie. Bergen County NJ, Peace!!
Someday!
Mint guys. Mint!👍
How often and for how long should i be watering new seed for SE Michigan? 3 times for 5 min each at 10am/12pm/2pm? 2 times 10min each at 10am/2pm? Some other combination? I have an Rachio sprinkler controller so I can be pretty flexible with creating schedules.
Great video. I’ll be using some of the info as I do a complete tear up. Trying to decide to sod or seed. About 1500sq. I may try 500 seed and the rest sod?
I have watched the first video four times and took notes! Love the content guys appreciate you both.
Good morning Ryan. Wondering if ever dealt with and had any success with deailing with POA Annua weed grass.
Ryan (NOT Knorr, but aka THE sports turf king) needs his own podcast. The guy knows his sh!# and can put a baby to bed with that voice.
We do the show weekly
@@ryanknorrlawncare Oh I'm aware! I've listened to them all on spotify, at least once :) BTW, I heard your remark on my comment on last week's episode LOL!! ... Definitely not wanting to get rid of you Ryan K! You're pretty awesome and I've been a subscriber for well over a year. I've learned a ton from you, great content and entertaining. Just sayin that Ryan D. needs his own youtube and/or podcast because he's THE sports turf king and that voice is so dreamy (insert heart eyes emoji). Keep up the great work The Ryans!
Great video. I continue to learn a lot from you since I've decided to "get serious" about my lawn this year. I'm planning a project this fall to level some areas of my lawn and overseed the entire lawn here in Michigan. As far as the order goes, should I core aerate then spread the leveling mix (inevitably filling the holes back in) or should I do the leveling before aerating? Also, is it a good idea to remove the plugs from the lawn when overseeding?
Yeah boy! 😎👊
I’m about 3 to 4 weeks out from a full lawn renovation here in Ohio. I did a soil test a few weeks back and am working with some pretty nutrient less dirt. I’m definitely going to put some starter fertilizer in when I lay my seed but I’m curious if there would be any benefit to liquid aeration and fertilizer prior to seeding to go ahead and improve the soil now
I’d like to hear his thoughts on whether or not to aerate before sand leveling. I can see how it could improve flow of water and oxygen, so I don’t really see a down side. Also, would aerating a bluegrass lawn before over seeding help improve germination?
Eric, watch our next episode for some thoughts on this question. Thanks!
20:03..ready to go until the end;))
Hi, 5 x Roundup will plant Fescue in fall. Small yard. Bermuda came back in small patches in test area. What should I do if patches return? 102-30 winter nights.
Can you be successful with over seeding and not top dressing? I will be using a pull behind aerator, and also have a pull behind dethatcher unit. I was going to skip the dethatch process but I’m worried about seed to soil contact.
Planning to do an overseed in the next month for tall fescue. I’ve got quite a bit of wild violet/creeping charlie spread thought the yard which survived the last two weed treatments...I’m planning to hit it with some Southern Ag Crossbow. How long do you recommend waiting to put down the seed after spaying this type of product? Trying to figure out how soon I need to kill it off to time the overseed. First frost is usually beginning of Oct.
Thanks Ryan, I appreciate you going over my question about syringing my bermuda here in Gilbert, AZ..
Its not fall yet, but I'm eager to get going with some problem areas in my backyard soon (mid-August), doing some preliminary seeding and fertilizer where its bare and then de-thatch/leveling/aerating and overseeding the entire thing in September. Would this first spot-seeding be worthwhile before overseeding again when its cooler, or would it just be a redundant waste of time/effort?
(Just for a little more info, my backyard has areas with a lot of weeds interspersed with grass, and some spots mostly or completely bare of grass, but with some weeds. I live in southern Ontario, Canada - I'm told its climate is pretty much the same as Ohio's. First frost date is October 1st).
I plan on renovating next year (slit seeding), would I benefit from aeration this year? The ground here is hard as a rock, or would the slit seeder be good enough aeration?
Hello Ryan, Doug here from Ohio. I'm in the middle of a lawn reno and I am ready for seed but rain is forecasted for the coming 6 days in a row, would you seed.? I do have a tackifyer to apply to the peat moss, it's the dry type like sawdust that you spread on as final step. I'm torn on what to do!! Should I wait or take the risk? I've watched all your vids and they are awesome and yes your washout unfortunates have me scared! Haha. Best wishes, Doug #toseedornottoseed
Canopeo is available in apple App Store
Curious what about soil that has disease/fungus. Would it be killed off with glyphosphate and then be fine to reseed or does the soil need to be removed? I have a fairy ring in one area.
Love the show. Want to reseed and do a little reno but am overrun with creeping Charlie in some areas. Do I have to wait til it is cooler to kill the creeping charlie? If I have to wait then I loose my reseeding window of opportunity, don’t I? Lastly what if I wanted to core aerate and then incorporate seed? Would that work?
Use tenacity...start now probably another application 21 days later then start your renovations
Getting ready to over seed my TTTF in Ohio. Would love some input on how to get best seed/soil contact on existing lawn. I’m thinking of using SunJoe to dethach or scarify? Then aerator. Then use spreader. Maybe light rake or level lawn in the end. Thoughts?
Sounds like a good plan
Dad shoes!!! OUCH!
You guys always talk about the discord. What is it called or can I get invited.
What cultivar would a taurus SHO be though?
I will ask Ryan this for the next episode
At resources on finding good sand or top soil in different regions and who offers it? Specifically in Seattle area
Great and helpful video! I'm doing a full reno this fall down to bare dirt on my 15ksf lawn. Do you think It would help for me to use a slit-seeder? I'm in Knoxville and am going to plant Pete's TTTF & KBG mix... Thanks Much!!
It’ll help you every distribute the seed. For 15k, I’d do whatever it takes to make your life easier.
Sweet!!!!
Skol, bro!
Treated town water vs Rain water ???
Question on Reno..3 apps of glyphosate. Can I start to add soil before the end of the last 7 days?
my plan on Reno I'm working on is get soil down before app 2 and then start watering lightly to get any weeds to come up out of the soil that was added
Does ryan sell his field source shirts anywhere?
If I follow the 45 day rule I have to start my overseeding when it’s still going to be upper 80s low 90s. I’m nervous
Rules are meant to be broken, look at the lawn rebel!
My yard has been completely overtaken by crabgrass. I seeded in March but didn't do a pre-emergent. After I kill it, do I have to pull it all? I mean, my entire lawn is 100% crabgrass.
Recording a new episode soon and we'll try to cover this
I have never understood the take and bake revolution. You can get a comparable pizza at the same price already cooked and ready to eat.
use some of that youtube fortune to get Ryan a new webcam and a nice set of over ear cans!
What RUclips fortune? Haha
@@ryanknorrlawncare Everyone knows when you hit 150k subs you get $150,000 ;-)
Could someone help me out.. I have a new house and would like to try seeding. Can someone guide me through the process?

What do you think about the rhizomatus tall fescue?
Cat M I bought some RTF to try as well in the Fall. Looks promising but would love to hear Ryan’s thoughts on it. Hope you get an answer to your question.
Browns Vikings Super Bowl? Hahahahahaha!
great
👌🏽
What do you recommend for a large netless seed blanket? I have not been able to find a 100' roll.
Futerra nettless is the one I used and it worked amazingly well. Check landscape supply warehouses etc
I sometimes core airate and then over seed is that okay? I'm not sure I get the growth out of the seed falling into the holes or attaching to the core plugs as they melt. What do you think?
That is a great way to overseed
@@ryanknorrlawncare thanks buddy.
Here is the link to the NTEP results on Perennial Ryegrass: ntep.org/reports/pr16/pr16_20-5/pr16_20-5.htm

Geeked out over the NTEP results last night, staying up way too late.
