You talk about doing a partial rehab if needed and overseeding to work with what you have. I did this a few years ago with a thatch rake to rip up all the weeds and other trash growing before scalping the remains. It works! A 20lb bag of big box seed spread across a 50x75 area with 20-30% existing grass with a heavy application on the worst area and light overseeding on the little grass remaining. Pulled the thatch rake over the area after seeding to get soil contact and did nothing the rest of the late summer/fall. In the spring, it was growing and now have a fairly nice lawn that once looked like the sand-lot movie.
Thank you so much, Al. I learned so much from this video. I really appreciate that. You don’t always recommend the torched earth strategy for fixing a lawn. It seems like that’s all you get with the lawn groups on Facebook. Everyone recommends that you glyphosate and start over.
Great wealth of information. Thank you so much! This is the first video I’m hearing specifically to not spray the Mesotrione after the new baby grass has germinated. I guess that’s why they say it can be applied at “time of seeding”.
I have POA problem so I seed in the Spring. I have good luck over seeding in the spring. I live in southern Oregon so I start in middle or 3rd week of May. It starts getting real high temps at the end of June. I use GCI Fescue.
Last fall, I overseeded with Blue Envy KGB from Twin Cities Seed Co on Aug 27. There were a few bare spots that had nice sprouts within a week. I thought the heat that we had here in the Twin Cities was going to be my undoing. Had a few days near 100 degrees. I was generous with water for the first week 4 waterings of 7 minutes per day.
Scott's Pro Vista Kentucky Blue seed can take actually over 2 years to fill in so one of my neighbors decided to have the sod installed and it's very very nice.
We can seed in August because in Florida, a lot of the older homes have deep artesian wells and commercial grade irrigation systems. I can water my lawn 4 times a day so I can seed bahia whenever I want. Just won't do it after September since I think it won't grow fast after Sept. Bahia does thin out overtime and should be overseeded each Spring. If we feed it, we use a low nitrogen type.
I currently have a 90/10 mix. 10% tttf 90% crab grass. I'm nuking the whole thing and decided on Johnathan green black beauty. I'm in a transition zone of California, so I don't need to really worry about extreme weather.
I shared this to my neighborhood group. Some have been getting letters from the HOA. I did my pre-emergent in Nov and Dec last year and I still had POA in March. I guess we have to hit it both in the fall and spring.
Been seeing more content about pre-germinating your grass seed by pouring several pounds in mesh sacks then soaking in buckets of water off and on until you see it first germinate. Then spread it out and mix with peat moss to dry it, then spread. Maybe better for small area or patching.
Could you do a discussion based on what to do regarding Bermuda in a new TTTF lawn located in the transition zone? I’d like to eliminate it or suppress it.
Legend lawn care wisdom - as always folks yeayoubetcha. 8:48 Do you even need to oversee? 30% rule. Especially with kbg, zoysia creeping grasses.. It will grow back - well taken care of. So it changes to plant care and soil care > seeding... even with hot zones or bare patches. So the question becomes - how to direct and provide soil for the grass to fill those weak zones. check for rocky soil in those hot areas too or sprinkler water regimen.. My issue - grass dying off from storm water run-off low areas. I've switched from seeding to plant and zone and soil area health case by case. Who knows some awesome preferred, non creeping water loving grasses and plants!? haha heeelp
I moved into a house in cool season area that has a warm season grass. I don't want my grass to go dormant in the winter. Would you overseed with cool season grass, or burn the warm season and start fresh with cool season?
If you live in Northern US and have a large yard that’s 5,000 plus sq ft and don’t have an inground sprinkler system should you even waste time with complex lawncare like overseeding and fertilizing?
you sure can. My lawn in Indiana was 3,000 in front, 1,500 on the sides and 2,500 in back and I managed it by dragging hoses around. Never was an issue, just took a little more planning is all. You could also decide to just keep the front lawn green and growing all season and let the back go dormant, making it a smaller area to care for. I know lots of folks who do that.
Alan, I am currently dealing with lawn fungus and have been cycling between my group 3 & 11 fungicides to try to at best bring it to a halt and at worse try to control it. If I were to proceed with my fall Reno/overseeding would the fungus contaminate my new seed? I don’t want to invest time and money on seeding that won’t have a chance to survive because of the fungus. Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated! Tnx.
good question and one I am addressing in this next week's podcast, short answer is probably not going to affect your new seed - the weather will shift in about 3-4 weeks and stop all fungus and that is when you'll be seeding too
I did it last year and it worked great! Saved days of watering the seed before it germinated, which is great because I don't have in ground irrigation. I'm dragging hoses all over the yard.
Hopefully you see this question. When people say "safe to use after X mows" etc. Is that just general term based on standard amount of time? I reel mow my rye/bluegrass so my overseed gets a second mow sometimes after 2.5-3weeks. So would i be safe? Or does it really mean wait 45-60 days?
I've been, as careful as can be, using my trusty hand weeding tool, removing crabgrass. I will be dethatching and leveling my lawn and don't want to prevent spreading more crabgrass seeds. This episode has me questioning any use of topsoil to fill the barespots. What else can I use?
I am in the transition zone and it looks like St. Augustine/ Bermuda would dominate except i have large tree with shade, so i think TTTF will work but warm season grass will not work it just dies . So what do I do in the full sun areas cuz the cool season grass cant keep up with Bermuda and St. Augustine . But i have shade, i currently have hard pack clay and moss. Have been moving in topsoil through summer to prepare for this fall will try TTTF
I have an issue with crabgrass. I spray it goes away but then it comes back in a different spot. It like what the heck is going on. I’m going to spray something different at 1 ounce per gallon today. It is getting out of control seriously. I live in the north Texas area next to an open field. I have common Bermuda grass which is thick and the stolens are growing vertices and not attaching to my soil. That may be my problem.
I bought a 5 lb bag of ProVista KBG a couple weeks ago. The lawn is killed off and ready for seeding. I'm just waiting on Tropical Storm Debby to get on out of here at this point. I'll be able to seed early next week. I've been waiting a couple years for it to be available in seed. Now that I was finally able to buy some, I can't wait to see how it turns out!
@LawnsAcrossAmerica Advanced Turf Solutions in Monroeville, PA. It's sold in 5 and 30 lb bags. $125/5 lb and $800+/30 lb bag. Expensive to say the least, but probably worth it in the long run. They were really helpful with any questions I had and sent me some literature about the ProVista, too
Glad you're back doing these regularly again
thank you for listening!
Glad you got back onto the podcast saddle. I know you hate the editing but these have been super beneficial
Thanks Chris!

Nice work bro!!! I hope you are enjoying the mow!
Im 63 and rented an aerator from Home Depot and it was a work out!! Once you learn how to turn it around without fighting it, things go alot better.
Nice bro!!! I hope you enjoyed the ass kicking!!

yeah I am a big fan of working with what you already have, it increases the chances for success
I’ve just downloaded your doc. Thank you sooo much. From Australia 😀
I've found that starting 3 weeks sooner in my backyard than my front yard increases my success because of the tree shading.
I just did a double pass of aerating of about 10000sqft yesterday. No joke about it kicking your butt. Definitely feeling it the day after.
Great wealth of information. Thank you so much! This is the first video I’m hearing specifically to not spray the Mesotrione after the new baby grass has germinated. I guess that’s why they say it can be applied at “time of seeding”.
yes exactly right. It won't harm the seed itself, but new grass growing can be negatively impacted so for sure, spray before germination occurs

Love it! Thank you for being awesome, I’ve got that itch coming off a hot dry summer in Ohio! A few more weeks buddy, let’s go!

Going to be doing my 4th seeding of ProVista this fall!

Benton County Indiana guy here, and I've seen snow in October 😬
Always went back after labor day 😎

I threw down some provista kgb on August 7th. Today is August 15th and I’m 99% sure I’m already getting germination. No pre germinating.
amazing stuff, I've learned a lot from watching your vids. Also, is that a Delta Drink next to you?
Now, if they could get my lawn to smell (sweet) like a fresh cut wild field every time I mow, that would be awesome.
I use a 40 gal sprayer on a tractor. Please discuss if all the liquid preps are compatible to be mixed together in the sprayer
School gets out in may
Your music tracks are very distorted. Try lowering the track audio by 10-25% so the music will compress better.😉

I just smoked my hole yard due to that

I scalped my tall fescue lawn to reseed. Is that bad? Thank you,
Any recommendations for seed/care living under a black walnut? Haven’t had much success the last few years following the lawn mastery app.
trees are the natural enemy to lawns. Perhaps change the area beneath the tree to a landscape bed with no grass.
I moved into a house in cool season area that has a warm season grass. I don't want my grass to go dormant in the winter. Would you overseed with cool season grass, or burn the warm season and start fresh with cool season?
what is the grass type that you have now? Bermuda, zoysia or St Augustine?
Can i over seed in the fall and put Prodimeome down? At the same time with the starter fertilizer? Need your advice. Thanks
no, the prodiamine will kill new seed as it germinates.
when do i do the first mow for my baby grass and what kind of mower do i use
if it needs to be mowed now, go for it! Just get on there and mow and get off. It won't hurt anything but you don't want to dance on it either. 😀
what kind of mower do i use the first time for the baby grass
you can use your regular mower, just be quick about it. Get on and cut it and get off, no dancing. It will be fine.
how often should i water my new lawn when the baby grass come up for 1/2 inch tall
once you have mowed it for the first time, just go on a regular watering schedule of 1/2" every 2 days

But what happens if you have alot of poa triv? Would you burn it down? Or continue to add new cultivars season over season?
If that is your primary problem, then this grass seed is your best bet: ruclips.net/video/xxD4LV4mCkM/видео.html

yes I would wait - give it that full 45 days before spraying anything, even if that is 4 or 5 mows for you. Better safe than sorry.

for sure don't use top soil, it is full of junk. For leveling, it's best to use straight sand. you can mix in 50% compost if you like, not required.
@@LawnsAcrossAmerica Thank you for the reply!
I can move on with the yard prep with confidence!
What happens if you presoak Kentucky blue grass? Would that get it up in maybe 10 days?

Did they do any short cut pro vista kbg? It would be interesting to see it's color in a 1in cut
yes they did, reel mowed below 1" and looks great
What happens when you decide to renovate your, now, roundup immune lawn? 🤔
there are plenty of chems that can kill it. It's only tolerant to glyphosate. Diquat for example, easily kills it.
Did Scott’s experiment with pre germinating the provista kbg?
not that I know of, but it sounds like it would be fun to try!

It must kill you not to be able to F with KBG at home.
I do miss it!
thats the trouble here, water is almost as much as the power bill, then they fine you if you go over a certain amount

What a long speech and we aren’t to seeding yet. Just the facts, please, about seeding!
