  • It's time to plant some grass seed and today I am planting my Elite Perennial Ryegrass in a small section in front of the house and I wanted to show how easy it can be to seed a new lawn area. Spring is not the ideal time for cool season grasses but can still be done so I also talk about some products to help with that and more tips and tricks as you head into summer.

      I've been seeding spring and fall for the past few years and spring has honestly worked better for me. We tend to have wet springs here in the Pacific Northwest. The fall over the past few years has been too dry and when it does start raining it's too cold for good germination.
      It helps that our summers are not too hot.

    • @somethinghandle

      I only do spring seeding as well. Never had issues so long as I cover it with something so birds don’t eat it. I don’t understand why people make it sound like spring is this impossible time to seed. I’ll do bare spots in mid summer too, it just takes more effort. I don’t even use good seed, just the Scott’s stuff from big box stores.

    • @titosrevenger
      @titosrevenger 2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah I'm willing to bet most people have never actually tried and are just repeating what they've heard online. For sure some places get too hot in the summer for infant grass plants to survive, but those places should reconsider growing grass in the first place.

    Spring is such an exciting time watching Mother Nature bounce back from all the winter shenanigans. I use a tackifier to keep those seeds stick to the soil. Using straw in an urban environment is usually not very curb appealing. I’ve also used rolls of burlap.

    Have you done any videos (or recomendations) on putting down seed with different lbs per 1000sq/ft? I'm planting tall fescue (overseed with some areas of last season grub damage) and I've always thought 8-10 per 1000 for new seeding and 4-5 for overseeding but then other sources say anything over 4-5 is unnecessary for all situations... Love your videos!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  2 месяца назад

      On bare ground tall fescue would be 8-10. Overseeding just depends how thick the current lawn is and how aggressive you want to be. So usually 6-8

    Our local garden center sells a clay cover to put over seed, that is like what baseball stadiums use for infield dirt. Have you used anything like this? heard of it, and by any chance know how it compares to other methods like peat moss or the straw blankets?

      @@ryanknorrlawncare I wonder why that is the option they both sell and recommend?
      I got to be honest, sometimes I wonder if they know what they are doing. They have 1 fertilizing system all granular. This one clay seed cover option. Told me not use clover in a flower bed as it is not shade tolerant, when all things say it is, and it there is some already growing there on its own. Told me there was no pre-emergent to put down in the fall to prevent fall weeds like Henbit, or Purple Deadnettle, despite me finding them online.

    Hey Ryan,
    I have two questions, please. I got a new concrete driveway and I had already placed pre-emergent this year,. Next to the driveway is a 3-inch wide/ deep gap along the entire lawn that I intend to fill with topsoil this coming week and I have your seed that I bought and so I wanted to fill and seed those sections; First question is - will the seed grow because technically it's all new topsoil, not mixed with the pre-emergent.. and this leads me into my second question, If I level the lawn with bulk topsoil after my pre-emergent has already been down, do you think ill get weeds because this now a new layer and will new grass grow above my leveling if I seed?
    Thank you, long time sub.
    Thanks for everything as always. You and Conner have been my go-to's. Much love from Michigan.
    Btw - The candle is great, I only light it up during the winter months when I want the smell of spring. Love it. And your seed has been the best I've used to date.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  2 месяца назад

      Just to be safe I would try to break up that existing soil where you're going to add more on top just to break the barrier. A little garden cultivator or some sort of rake that you could be aggressive enough with to break things up would be fine. I would definitely anticipate some weeds in the bulk topsoil so just get grass going as good as you possibly can and then you can spray for weeds early summer after things have matured.
