The chosen hero of fate There he sat, the wanderer, a prince who had forsaken his claim to the throne to save all lives of nine kingdoms. He is the promised hero, but what happens when the one who is supposed to protect doesn't want the burden of a million lives? He looked into cracking and embers of the fire in front of him with contemplation. The wanderer had the memory of his beloved in his head and the son he'll never see grow from boy to man.
Changing the course of destiny “I shan't ever be free of this destiny of mine, ” said the prince to no one. There he stood in the forest on his horse, quietly hearing the leaves rustle from wavering gentle winds. “Shall I really appease the gods to stop this world from being destroyed?” Who am I to be everyone's saviour? He thought to himself. When he continued riding forth, a quiet flowing of distinct waters was near and changed the direction of his steed. Once there, he jumped down and looked out to the vast lake surrounded by many trees. Yet, the scenery didn't interest him; it was the island in the middle of it that did. He strode along the water bank to look for a boat for him to row across. Alas, he didn't find out. The wanderer sat on his hide, letting the wetness of the ground seep into his trousers. It had rained the day before, and it hadn't been pleasant for him. “Are you lost fair traveller?” a voice asked, not familiar to him. “What is it you seek?” Startled, he quickly rose and reached for his sword before being stopped by an unknown force. “What is this!?” he asked, struggling to move his arm and legs. “I mean you no harm,” said the voice. “Can I trust you will behave?” “Yes,” said the wanderer and collapsed onto the ground. “Who are you?” he asked, finding himself curious now. “Someone that could help you for your harrowing journey...” the voice paused. “But you don't want that do you?” “I-i... Yes,” he replied, almost ashamed. “May I ask why fair traveller? Don't be shy; there is no one here but us and a few animals.” He remained quiet, pondering if he should reveal his intentions. A moment passed, then finally answered, “I wish to be free... I came here because I heard of someone who lives on an Island who can grant me what I want.” “That is?” the voice asked. “Freedom. I wish to be free from the burden that has been placed on my shoulders by my ancestors before me. I had already forsaken my claim to the throne yet; my path still remains the same.” “Is this what you truly want?” “Yes.” “Then you shall have it! All you have to do is cross the lake.” “How?” “Trust your feet that shall carry and help you cross,” the voice said. Trust my feet? He reflected. Not wanting to waste any more time, he stepped forth; suddenly, the waters began to engulf him like fire, and his vision went black.

To an old queen looking back on her mistakes and wishing she had done better, to a newly appointed queen that realizes there is more to the crown than its privileges and responsibility
I like how this song manes me think on how just because a person is a king or queen they actually cant just do what they want because their job comes first and the choices they have to make, even if the outcome isnt optimal, sometimes cant be avoided even though they wish it. It puts it into perspective.

The cost of a crown is always weighed in what you are willing to give up, or what you are capable of taking. Nothing more or less will buy you a crown.
Some people see it as the Youthfull Queen looking forward equally others See it as the Aged and Wisened Queen reflecting back on her younger years and self and just how easy she though the crown was going to be
I NEVER FOUND A SONG THAT DESCRIBES THIS!!! I've been through the same things my friends go through & I try warning them of the outcome but they don't listen & repeat it. Being an empath, I relive the feeling watching them go through the same thing. Sometimes you gotta leave for your mental health but the guilt of it lingers rather if it makes sense or doesn't, but it's worth it for the people that do listen. Knowing the hell they would have endured had you not for it before is your purpose. This is my favorite song now, wow!
The curse of ginving advice to the "young" they can't understand because they don't have the experience to understand. It is why every generation repeats the mistakes of their parents to a certain degree.
I feel like you're missing what this song is about. It's not about being unable to prevent bad things happening to people. It's about deliberately causing a bad thing to happen to someone, even though it grieves you to do so, because it'll help more people. Specifically, the experience any military commander has of giving orders to people (eg "go and attack that encampment) that you know will cause some of those people to die to accomplish a larger goal.
In a world where the greatest people in personality and in skills, magic or otherwise, are chosen by their horsey Companions to fight for their kingdom. Most of which make it to retirement age, dying in horrendous battle for those who might want to take their kingdom, their skills, not knowing how these heralds exist in the first place. For those speculating on what the song is saying or meaning, read the books by the author and song writer Mercedes Lackey. The song doesn’t appear to be about any particular book in the Tales of Valdemar series/timeline, but the Queens Own trilogy is the closest match
When you have solid proof that you are the one keeping a group together, though all your efforts are brushed aside, and dismissed. When you were taught to hold the weight of what feels like the world but it never feels like you're holding it all. When you can relate to this song and you don't know how to feel about it.
I dont knos who you are, but this is beautiful, elegantly and reasonably put. It also made me cry, the cost of the crown for those with compassion. Ill explain the little journey thay got me here: im like, hmmm, catch fire is good, i dont listen to many female artists, being my comfort zone is punk and rock. Oh linsey sterling is amazing, oh i really love shatter me. Its like the magical YT algorithm was like, hmmm, bet! Try this one, tehe. This is a work of art, a thing of beauty and it resonates with me so strongly. Stay strong queen
This song reminds me so much of my character, Isolda. She always understood all of the things the lyrics talk about but never thought she would be the one facing them.
I was sitting quietly and by coincidence I opened this song the first time I ever heard it and when she said Reminds me of the freedom I gave up so long ago then tears suddenly started to fall from my eyes
This song makes you feel like the singer is a princess after being coronated as a queen trying to follow in her predecessor’s footsteps, and her predecessor had been the epitome of a true queen. However, the current queen is struggling to be the perfect, good, trusted, intelligent queen that her predecessor once was. But she proves to be more empathic, stated by the line “the tears that burn my eyes are all the tears queen can’t shed”, not treating the kingdom as if it were a responsibility, but as if it were her family.
More this is the now Experienced Queen reflecting on her past ideal from before she became Queen and comparing that to the hard reality that is being Queen. If I remember this song is about Queen Selenay of Valdimar who we know was very close with her Heralds
This is wonderful. I see the queen as she reads reports and has to write orders for her men. Oh that war was tragic and brutal!!!! Then the mage winds, and storm series.
Absolutely lovely, reminds me of some of the Shattered Empires mythology(which isn't very helpful, I don't believe it's been released to the public yet, but thank you).
@@cyrusaurelius5777 "Shadows of The Old World" is a campaign on "DragonFireGaming"'s channel spanning 130 episodes as of the time of this comment, and is the sequel campaign to "Welcome To The Show" (simply titled "Brony D&D" in the playlists) found on "Dr. Wolf"'s channel, spanning 230 episodes. It's all Slice-of-Life focused and features the bronies from "The Secret Rift" back when Gen4 was going strong, and during the scandal involving "he who shall not be named" committing cyber rape/harassment (if I recall correctly). The important thing to take from that is that he broke a lot of bonds of trust since he united most of the group initially and was immediately booted from the campaign and "The Secret Rift" as well as banned from RUclips as his actions are unforgivable and he hasn't been heard from since. (Supposedly he's still running from the law.) (The only reason I included all that is because of a disclaimer in the last ten or so episodes where he's featured having a disclaimer since this all happened before they were uploaded.) "Welcome to The Show" was about a rag-tag group of unlikely friends aiding in a three-way war for control of the mortal plane (if I remember correctly) with the devils of hell Vs. the mortals Vs. the Gods and Goddesses. "Shadows of The Old World" is about another rag-tag group of unlikely friends solving a mystery involving devils attempting to invade the mortal realm. About half the group are the children of the old group, and the other half are new characters, but the entire old cast (minus him) has returned. Oh, and one of them is a runaway princess who has fled the crown to become the owner of a bar and a belly dancer at said bar (if I have the roles correct. If she's not both, she *is* one of them.). Josh Scorcher is the DM in both. Most of the episodes of both campaigns are just talking, working, or having fun, so be prepared to spend a few fun days in between most action scenes. I'm sorry. I thought I replied sooner. Guess I forgot to click "reply".
This song just gives all the points as to why I would hate being the leader of a people, I feel too deeply, although I know when to take emotion out of things that doesn’t help because once I let myself feel again I break and crack at the cruelties I might have to or have committed.
This song actually fits Princess Zelda from Breath of the Wild so perfectly, especially the last half. “The dearest are my heralds who return my care with love” - Link, Revali, Urbosa, Daruk and Mipha “That land and people first have needs that I may not deny - so I must send my dearest friends to danger and to die” - she must send her friends, the champions, off to protect Hyrule, despite knowing that it is incredibly dangerous and they end up dying in the fight. “Oh gods that dwell beyond the stars, if you can hear my cry -“ I can just imagine her holding Link’s dying body, and crying up into the stars, to the Goddess Hylia. “And if you have compassion, let me send no more to die” - well, you get the idea by now. This is just some of the lines, to get the gist of it. The whole song fits pretty dang well.

if you have not read the heralds of valdemar books i recommend it. this song would have the queen lamenting each and every one of her heralds duty to her people forced her to sacrifice for their safety.
"Oh gods that dwell beyond the stars if you can hear my cry, and if you have compassion let me send no more to die" What the queen didn't know is that the eldrich gods that dewllet beyond the stars were waiting for just such a bargain. She had just made a deal with lovcraftina beings. Just as she had pleaded, none of them would die, although in time all of them begged for it.

She walks down a dimly lit palace hallway, the only sounds being the fluttering of her regal dress until a serenade of wailing and gunfire blead in from the streets. It evoked images of plunder and execution, of all those she abandoned to the madness that sweeps the nation, of Ernyes and Heidi, of her beloved sister Tara, all for slimmest hope that dignity may be restored to this Empire. As the shooting finally died down and she had approached a large door gilded and inscribed with ornate floral Motifs. She was greeted by an officer who saluted her and awaited orders, "officer, report the situation." The officer turned to the window and raised the shutter, revealing a burning city strewn with rubble, soldiers and corpses as he gave his report "My Leige, upon your command we have taken the city and the surrounding countryside, aside from a few dissolving pockets of resistance we have no known threats to our position, however it is certain that, in due time, the other legions will come for the capital." With that, It was clear that this was her only path now. Giving a nod, the officer opened the door to the throne room of the Palace of New Cordelle, loyal soldiers stood before the throne and a camera crew waited in the back. There was no time to waste, she needed to make her position known to the Empire and rally the people to her side. She entered the room and upon the throne was the Phoenix crown and the Thornblade, the two most powerful symbols of imperial might. The camera crew started broadcasting. For all the nation to see, she climbed the steps of the throne and took on the crown and blade. The soldiers kneeled and she gave her speeach "to the people of Lutenia and the broader world, this civil war that has scarred us all must end now, too many have suffered and perished under the heel of the Velvet, Phoenix and Loyalist legions. I can no longer stew in blind complacency as everything that I believed in and blead for is sweapt away by this tide of tyranny so it is with a heavy heart that I take this crown and the title of Empress Oakley, the First of her name, now rise my loyal legion, and go fourth to bring freedom and prosperity back to our great nation!" The soldiers stood up in lockstep, the clack of their boots thundering through the halls and with a salute they all shouted "With honour my Empress we shall die for Lutenia!" And with that the broadcast ended and her fate was sealed, she knew that it was here where she would live or die.

He looked into cracking and embers of the fire in front of him with contemplation. The wanderer had the memory of his beloved in his head and the son he'll never see grow from boy to man.
Changing the course of destiny
“I shan't ever be free of this destiny of mine, ” said the prince to no one. There he stood in the forest on his horse, quietly hearing the leaves rustle from wavering gentle winds. “Shall I really appease the gods to stop this world from being destroyed?”
Who am I to be everyone's saviour?
“What is it you seek?”
Startled, he quickly rose and reached for his sword before being stopped by an unknown force. “What is this!?” he asked, struggling to move his arm and legs.
“I mean you no harm,” said the voice. “Can I trust you will behave?”
“Yes,” said the wanderer and collapsed onto the ground. “Who are you?” he asked, finding himself curious now.
“Someone that could help you for your harrowing journey...” the voice paused. “But you don't want that do you?”
“I-i... Yes,” he replied, almost ashamed.
“May I ask why fair traveller? Don't be shy; there is no one here but us and a few animals.”
He remained quiet, pondering if he should reveal his intentions. A moment passed, then finally answered, “I wish to be free... I came here because I heard of someone who lives on an Island who can grant me what I want.”
“That is?” the voice asked.
“Freedom. I wish to be free from the burden that has been placed on my shoulders by my ancestors before me. I had already forsaken my claim to the throne yet; my path still remains the same.”
“Is this what you truly want?”
“Yes.”
“Then you shall have it! All you have to do is cross the lake.”
“How?”
“Trust your feet that shall carry and help you cross,” the voice said.
Trust my feet? He reflected. Not wanting to waste any more time, he stepped forth; suddenly, the waters began to engulf him like fire, and his vision went black.

There's something about the line "thinks twice and thrice and yet again", in particular, that I find especially beautifully written.
Oh that is gorgeous.
I adore Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar series (as well as the 500 Kingdoms and Elemental Masters series). I haven't heard too much of her Filk stuff though.
Yes, me too. Collecting them.

Awesome. So hauntingly lovely, yet so full of wisdom and understanding of the true weight born by quality leaders of men…
Ive always loved songs like this, it makes me miss a home I've never seen. I hope some day I'll find it, I hope the same for anyone that shares my feelings.
I can't stop listening to this song. I am transported to another time and place. It feels magical.
You should check out the book series it stems from. There are a lot of them in the Voldamar saga.
This is pure beauty in music form. Absolutely Gorgeous.
This, is amazing!! It gives me chills. and i sooo hear it in Selenay's Voice. I would so read a trilogy about her.
"Arrows of the Queen", "Arrows Flight", "Arrows Fall".
The very first trilogy written by Lackey.
I love Mercedes lackey’s books, all of them. They were a new world to journey through while growing up. I love them still. This song is beautifully sung. Thank you.
Thank you for this pretty video ^^ But I advice you should increase the size of the lyrics next time since it's too hard to see them clearly.
I didn't even notice them.
thank you for the advice; i will keep that in mind for next time !
There are lyrics? Well I'll be.
...there were lyrics? Oh
Thank you for putting the stars in the description to separate the points of information, it makes it easier to read :)
I have been Mercedes Lackey Fan since I first found the Book The Queen's Arrows and all the other Hearld Stories, I am Glad that she is now writing about the Founding of Valdemar it's the story I have waited for a LOOOOOONG time for I was 21 when I first found the Queens Arrows that was 31 years ago (you do the math lo) I can't wait for June when the second book of the founding is release.
I really hope this song winds up on Spotify someday.

Such a beautiful and pure song
Lovely song! & the WLOP artwork suits it very well.
Matches the pic~ Now I have a much more clear vision for my story. Good job^^
I may be late since I have been listening to the nightcore more, but I guess from now on I'll be here ;>

I am gonna cry this is too beautiful..
The cost of a crown is always weighed in what you are willing to give up, or what you are capable of taking. Nothing more or less will buy you a crown.
I love Mercedes Lackey's books!
She was, her daughter just as much once she was cured of the brat.
To me it sounds very beautiful like a young queen facing life as it is with both dignity and inner peace
Thank you so much for the lyrics ❤️💕
A favorite author of my youth and Just lovely Singing here.
The *repetition* of "The dearest are my Heralds..." invokes the double meaning of "dear" -- it means both "loved" and "expensive".
Kind of a messed up way to look at it, but hey, you do you
Beautiful song. Thanks, uploader.
I spend some time searching before finally find this song again. Thanks for uploadind it ^^
This took me so long to find cause I haven’t listened to it in so long but coming back to listen to this worth it
When you have solid proof that you are the one keeping a group together, though all your efforts are brushed aside, and dismissed.

This song reminds me so much of my character, Isolda. She always understood all of the things the lyrics talk about but never thought she would be the one facing them.
Sound through a night core like others have said. Beautiful both ways ❤️
Such a beautiful song, Im glad I decided to listen to it after a few years of listening to nightcore
I was sitting quietly and by coincidence I opened this song the first time I ever heard it and when she said Reminds me of the freedom I gave up so long ago then tears suddenly started to fall from my eyes
It's a complete masterpiece ✨
Joshscorcher brought this to my attention. So glad he did. Now one of my D&D characters is more fleshed out.
@@Beldandy100 oh, thanks for informing me

Absolutely lovely, reminds me of some of the Shattered Empires mythology(which isn't very helpful, I don't believe it's been released to the public yet, but thank you).
OMG I love this song.. Also, it reminds me of Queen Sabran from The Priory of The Orange Tree...
I was introduced to this through the Brony D&D campaign. It's so sad and beautiful! Amazing where we find inspiration for our work.
Now I'm super curious, what was your campaign about?
(Supposedly he's still running from the law.) (The only reason I included all that is because of a disclaimer in the last ten or so episodes where he's featured having a disclaimer since this all happened before they were uploaded.)
"Welcome to The Show" was about a rag-tag group of unlikely friends aiding in a three-way war for control of the mortal plane (if I remember correctly) with the devils of hell Vs. the mortals Vs. the Gods and Goddesses.
Oooo when I saw who wrote the lyrics I couldn't believe it. Those books were my shit
Mine too. I lived in those books because life sucks. High school story.
This song actually fits Princess Zelda from Breath of the Wild so perfectly, especially the last half.
“The dearest are my heralds who return my care with love” - Link, Revali, Urbosa, Daruk and Mipha
“That land and people first have needs that I may not deny - so I must send my dearest friends to danger and to die” - she must send her friends, the champions, off to protect Hyrule, despite knowing that it is incredibly dangerous and they end up dying in the fight.
I was actually thinking of Princess Zelda myself, and you're right: the lyrics fit BOTW Zelda in particular.
I GOT IT, I just found a song for my queen "Hera" which I named so after a certain, this describes her internaly cuz she NEVER shows this side, instead she shows beautiful, brave, confident and all you would call *Perfect*
I am known as the evil leader in the other world. But they know not the struggles and the chains that bind me to my destiny, one that I regret....
You have inspired one very long poem.
The Rule of Dark
I am known as an evil leader
In the other world I rule
However they know not
The struggles
The chains
These bind me to my destiny
One I regret so severely
I had no choice
In how I grew
The portal was tempting
A hero of my story
However I became
The villain of the tale
A marauder of my own people
Wandering the roads
Fighting the heroes
It was only natural
Upon castles I happened
Good food and weak knights
Of course I plundered
I had nothing to lose
The heroes hunted me
I had no choice
I had to flee
I had to hide
I found myself killing
Only in defense
No one would believe me
I had no choice
Everyone attacked me
I learned to love the kill
My mind twisted and warped
I couldn’t even tell
Defense turned to offense
I attacked the heroes
I took
I killed
I did as I wanted
I would have everything
No one could stop me
I grew in my powers
So dark and twisted
My mind a labyrinth
Eventually I sat upon a throne
The whole world before me
I found myself bored
Empty
Longing
I don’t remember
Why my adventure started
Only that I should feel
There should be no void
So I tried everything
The dark things I learned to love
The murder
The razing
The torture
The people
So many things I tried anew
The kingdom almost fell
The madness all consuming
I don’t know how
I came back to my senses
I saw all the wreckage
The carnage and hell I created
I mourned for who I was
I vowed to do better
Alas the dark’s hold was firm
My mind and soul corrupted
There was no salvation for me
No one would believe it
I had no choice
I continued to rule as I was
Slowly making changes
I will forever be the dark lord
The destroyer of the world
Yet I know
Regret will always haunt me
When I die
The scars will always remain
I had no choice
I will always be the villain
Perhaps I can create a Hero
One day.

It is. This song is based on her Heralds Of Valdemar novels, and yes, she wrote the lyrics.
Does anyone have recommendations for songs that have a similar style? I feel like this reminds of some song I heard before but I can't put my finger on it.
im not certain on a specific time period, but i believe searching for folk/medieval ballads will be your best bet! i recommend artists such as jean luc lenoir and anaïs mitchell. hope this helps!

Try Battle Dawn and Kerowyn's Ride. All based around The Heralds of Valdemar novels by Mercedes Lackey, who also wrote the lyrics for many of the songs.

I can no longer stew in blind complacency as everything that I believed in and blead for is sweapt away by this tide of tyranny so it is with a heavy heart that I take this crown and the title of Empress Oakley, the First of her name, now rise my loyal legion, and go fourth to bring freedom and prosperity back to our great nation!"
The soldiers stood up in lockstep, the clack of their boots thundering through the halls and with a salute they all shouted "With honour my Empress we shall die for Lutenia!"
And with that the broadcast ended and her fate was sealed, she knew that it was here where she would live or die.
I don't know how I found this, but I'm not regreting it.
