LYRICS: The stars are very beautiful, above the palace walls, They shine with equal splendor, still above far humbler halls. I watch them from my window, but their bright entrancing glow, Reminds me of the freedom I gave up so long ago. The royal circlet of bright gold rests lightly on my brow, I once thought only of the rights this circlet would endow. But once I took the crown to which I had been schooled and bred, I found it heavy on the heart, though light upon the head. Although I am the head of state, in truth I am the least, The true Queen knows her people fed, before she sits to feast. The good Queen knows her people safe, before she takes her rest, Thinks twice and thrice and yet again, before she makes request. For they are all my children, all that I swore to defend, It is my duty to become both Queen and trusted friend- And of my children high and low, from beggar to above, The dearest are my Heralds, who return my care with love. The dearest are my Heralds, swift to spring at my command. Who give me aid and fellowship, who always understand That land and people first have needs that I can't deny- So I must send my dearest friends to danger-and to die. A friend, a love, a child-it matters not, I know indeed, That I must sacrifice them all if there should be the need. They know, and they forgive me-doing more than I require, With willing minds and loving hearts go straight to grasp the fire. These tears that burn my eyes are all the tears the Queen can't shed, The tears I weep in silence are for all my Heralds dead. To God who dwells beyond the stars, if you can hear my cry- And if you have compassion-let me send no more to die!

Thank you so much. I will add these to the info on the song - up above. My best, Moppet
ps I've been gone for a long time & am just coming back. I just saw your addition.
In verse 5 line 3 it's "may not" instead of "can't".
in the 2nd line of verse 7, it's not
"The tears I weep in silence are for all my heralds dead." but
"The tears I weep in silence, as I mourn my heralds dead."
also verse 7 line 3 is "oh gods" as the world was made with multiple gods and not a singular great read out though :)
Few mistakes, but thank you!
Thank you for your service.
But you've made a mistake.
It is not "The tears I weep in silence are for all my Heralds dead."
It's "The tears I weep in silence as I mourn my herald's - dead."
That sound was my heart breaking. These books were my childhood best friends.
OMG they are mine at the moment
Wait what book
@@guineveree1569 Sorry, i'm 2 years late, but they are probably talking about Mercedes Lackey's fantasy books. They are all "High Fantasy Genre" books, just like Tolkien's.
There are so many lessons that this song has for those in leadership positions in any organization.
"Although I am the head of state, in truth I am the least, The true Queen knows her people fed, before she sits to feast. The good Queen knows her people safe, before she takes her rest, Thinks twice and thrice and yet again, before she makes request."
In that series, that is why the first ruler of the kingdom, Sir Voldamar decided that the ruler must be a companion chosen Herald. It ensured that the monarch would be of a certain nature.
@@Krahazik Aye. And if they were to turn away from that nature too much, their companion would repudiate them and they would be herald no more. And since a non-herald cannot have claim to the throne, they'd loses their status as monarch.
Though there might be laws in Valdemar that dictate a different outcome, perhaps in books I haven't read yet.
So many think that being King or Queen is an easy job full of luxury and splendor but there is an awful price to be paid to have such a position. No matter what you do, some will hate you and some will love you. Some will protect you while others want to kill you, there are always those who want to take away what you have. Then there comes the times of war when you have to send your people to their deaths and there is still a chance you will lose.
Well... it really depends on whether the king/queen is willing to serve the people and sacrifice themselves instead of abusing their power like many king/queens do.
That's really true for any leader of a nation, elected or born.
Life's a bitch, that's just how it is. A monarch's whole job is based on pleasing their subjects, and being of sound mind to do it. If a king or queen is actually starting to become bitter over their own job, they've already failed everyone.
A leader is a servant to those they lead, entrusted by them to wield authority on their behalf. 'Serve To Lead'. I used to have that written on a badge on my hat, once upon a time.
reminds me of the lyrics in that song "everybody wants to rule the world".. to which i add "and they better just hope they don't get what they want"
I wish this was on spotify aaah

“Reminds me of the freedom I gave up so long ago”
It’s so beautiful and has such a deep meaning
I was in a position of leadership and while I didn’t have to make such hard choices, this song still resonates with me.
I am such a huge fan of Mercedes Lackey! Which means, of course, that her making all these amazing songs almost gave me a heart attack from pure joy. This is my second favorite of the songs from Valdemar. Battle Dawn is my all-time favorite!
So these are songs inspired by her books, not from them?
The kind of Queen I would lay down my life for.
I'd fight and die for a queen like this
In a feudal world that is what is expected of a Queen.
I bow to no man, let alone a woman.
I don't think she'd want that 😂

Whoa...This song is so amazing. I mean, the lyrics are so deep. How did I not find this before. Thank you for the upload.
so glad you found this and enjoyed it. I think it's absolutely wonderful. My best, Moppet
KyuubiNoNeko yeah it's a great song, but never once do they say "cost of the crown" the the song, because usally the title is a line said a lot in the song.
Amanda Barton | Songs also usually have a chorus, and this doesn't. I can think of a million songs that don't say the title in the lyrics. It's not that uncommon.
Not necessarily, The Who's songs barely had any of their song names in their lyrics. This is more of a minstrel ballad and more a romantic themed, and they too never followed the format we currently have for our artists. The only reason we have the song names and choruses is sadly to ensure a catchy tune and easily memorable so the majority can follow along. Songs like these while beautiful in their own right...aren't catchy or memorable in lyrics..and to me that's a sin worse than any of the cardinal ones.
I actually know where this song is from, its written by the Author Mercedes Lackey for her book series 'The Arrows of The Queen'. Its written in Queen Selenay's perspective when talking to her Queen's Own (Heraldic Advisor) who is a thirteen year old girl in the beginning of the series.
I was a girl in the village doin alright, then I became a princess overnight

May i read the fanfiction? :]
Lili Jordan Well, it's not in English....
Awwww
Lili Jordan well you could put it in a translator and read it from there
Well if you don't know this song is actually from author Mercedes lackey who wrote it(or had it written idk) to accompany one of her book series. Cost of the crown and also another song called battle dawn are about Queen Selenay of Valdemar.
This is odd, but the image at 0:50 is actually in an old picture frame in my grandmother's basement
Most of the pics I used are famous. I have them listed on another computer, so I can't look up right now. That is interesting...and nice. Thx.
This is a beautiful video, and fate for what?

Thank you. I love the song. My best to you, Moppet
I have it in my classroom
Ok, when I found this, the first thing that came to mind was a character that I created for a group roleplay with my friends firever ago. And the more I listen to it, the more it fits. While she's not a queen or anything, she's is a leader. This is an amazing song. Can't stop listening to it.
I'm building a character around this song it's took way to long to find one I can actually sing along too.
This song reminds me of Historia Reiss..... the true ruler of the walls! ❤❤❤❤❤😭😭😭😭😭
same!
Princess Lilly knelled towards the thrown, and once the crown sat upon her golden hair, she took her place upon the throne. Everyone cheered.
She sat for the rest of the day, watching everyone feast. One by one, men swore their loyalty to Queen Lilly. The last was her best friend. He smiled so bright, he had always wanted to only serve the royals. As he swore his vows was when the Queen realized what the words meant.
Both have made these vows now. They are bound by vow. She will have to send him off to war, to send him to his death.
Ten years later, she held the child of this faithful knight, her king, who died before she could tell him in the front lines. She weeps and sings a lullaby to her little child, telling her of what vows she had taken, and what they are bound by the word forever.
Is this the real history of the song?????
No, it is from the Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lacky (who also wrote the song) from the perspective of Queen Selenay in Arrows of the Queen
DANG IT YOU MADE IT MORE SAD
*Ugly sobbing*
Here take my like...
Sorry if you think this is the real story. It was just something I made up for the song.
@@i.s.9451 Oh OK .Nevermind though
This song is not just for a Queen (or King). They can apply to anyone who is in command of people, especially in the military.
Monarchy can be a very stable and efficient government. Provided he or she who wears the crown is of good heart, sound mind, level head, and firm hand. Not a common thing for a person to have all. But if they do poses the qualities the singer sang of here, they shalt make fine kings and queens.
This is from an American.
Judging from the current political climate in America(as in the past thirty years), I(New Hampshire resident myself) would be willing to embrace a monarchy provided the ruler was one you have described. I do not see that happening soon. And if it did the person may not remain so for long, and there are no guarantees their successor would either.
Selflessness and humility also are requirements for a king. No palace nessesary, always knowing their place as a servant of their people.
The problem is, you get more bad or incompetent monarchs than good, and under such a system they rule for life.
It is true, that there were more bad kings than good kings in the medieval times, however, in the medieval times, the term "Education" meant learning facts and getting hit with a stick, instead of understanding concepts. Furthermore, a monarchy would have just as much a need for checks and balances as any other ruler.
Most systems of government work until humans are added to the situation. We humans can come up with great ideas but actually carrying them out is the problem.
ladyserenegrace18 How right you are
I can imagine Princess Zelda of Breath of the Wild singing this song right before the end!
I literally scrolled through this ENTIRE comment section looking for a comment that said this AHHH. 💗
Me too, BotW Zelda instantly started singing this in my head, completely in front of stain glassed windows of her 5 fallen Champions, song ending with the last two lines being her begging at the Goddess Statue.

I have been listening to this song for months now and I still shed tears every time I listen to it. Not everytime I hear it, but every time I truly listen to it and empathize with the character sung about as if she was a real person.
This is what got me into Valdemar, about two and a half years after the fact.
Same here, and at about the same time.

Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey, I think
I think of this song each time I hear a child talk about being a king or queen. They talk about what they would do as a ruler, but never think of the cost of the crown. To be a ruler, you will command people to be a part of genocide, and to commit genocide. To kill for the people back home, and for the children and wives, having to discard the thought that if war goes on, the children must murder, and be murdered. A queen and king know what they must do, and when they look in a child's eyes, they can see his face scorched by days of heat, and his cloths soaked in blood of his own, his enemies, and his friends. They have walk through the city some days, but they are a sign to parents, that they will one day have to scream out in agony of tears when news of their child reaches them. To think that each dead soldier was once a child whom a mother once cradled in their arms, who when night came would kiss them goodnight and tell them she loved them. Knights give flowers to ladies, and due to their job, the same ladies may have to place flowers on a stone, crippled and broken, with the name of a man that no one cares about, just another number in the fields of glory.
I don't know where you got the idea of genocide from, or it being a necessity, ever. Nor is this song even about war - it's more about the lives sacrificed in order to prevent wars from occurring, about the hard choices made to sacrifice the few to make a good life for the many.
@@SirMandokarla Wars are not fought for no reason. Wars are fought to make peace. The part I am referring to is when she says "so I must send my dearest friend to danger and to die". A queen and king, no matter the attachment, may one day have to send friends and people they know very well into war to kill or be killed. The prospect of becoming a soldier in medieval ages were more likely than not. The average amount of soldiers in a medieval army were up near the 10,000s and so it is not hard to believe that rulers knew people from the armies.
Brightly burning......... I remember that book from this artist.
This song was written by the woman who wrote the Heralds of Valdemar, I have several of her books but I didn't make the connection until now!
After this many times listening I cannot get past the idea that maaaybe the problem here is that the Queen's dearest friends are the same people as her high-risk environment special forces. I must just be a cynic...
shadowthespikythingy Is this a joke I've taken too seriously? The person who wrote this also wrote many many stories her name is Mercedes Lackey, in that world she had many heralds and they all live in the castle unless they were out on a mission. The heralds are meant to deliver messages for her. So while she is the Queen and her best friends are the Heralds she must send them out through danger to deliver messages to other kingdoms! I've only read one book, I think it was Arrow's Flight? Don't quote me on that, I'm not sure. Anyway she's an amazing writer if you like fiction
The Heralds: a group of people chosen by the Companions to be all that the Queen may require them to be, Messengers, spies, militia commanders, war commanders, judges, executioners, by the bond shared with the Companions a single Herald can be both truly trust worthy and nigh incorruptible (with the exception of Tylendel which was mostly a fit of extenuating insanity) they are the queens dearest friends because she can trust them to be both completely honest and not making plans behind her back as the nobles cannot be so trusted, the Heralds are the first to any battle engagement and the last to leave unless specifically commanded to. so yes to @Ally Cat and yes to @Shadowthespikythingy lol :D
I literally can’t stop tapping the replay button!
This song reminds me of my favorite manga „Akatsuki no Yona". It's about a princess who has to flee from her castle because of her cousin, who betrayed her father (the king) and killed him (and became king by himself) - because the father was a bad king, he never did anything against attacks from other countries and lead the kingdom into ruin. Soo-Woon, that's the cousin's name, had to sacrifice his childhood friends Yona (the princess) and Hak (her bodyguard). They aren't dead, but still, their relationship will never be the same again. Only because it was the only way to save the kingdom. Also, Yona becomes friends with a few warriors, who would give their lifes for her (because of an prophecy and all that stuff). If there was a battle, she'd have to let them go, even though they might die. It's sad to think about - betraying your own friends or having to send them to death, just for the kingdom's sake.
Also, to anyone who knows it: I love you.
Thank you for the recommendation!

I shed a tear-
I'm from America but I support all forms of governments. even dictators can be great leaders, and I'm not calling monarchs dictators it was just a example .
\Long may she reign.
Jacob Willis dictators are inherently unjust rulers. Even if they do good the y do not secure true rights and freedoms for their people. Kimgs and Queens might be a level below dictators but still their people are not equal citizens but subjects to the crown. The only legitimate government is the one that secures the rights and freedoms of its citizens and goves them the power over the government. Its called Democracy.
The british Monarchy is a democratic monarchy....

Wow I love this song, made me happy and I cried also. thank you!
the main moral of the song (i think) is that a Leader or Ruler should be humble and serve the needs of the people rather than serving the Rulers own needs or wants.
some Leaders today forget this lesson, and it is sad to see the results.
Is a leader not human, does a leader not deserve happiness? Certainly, a leader must consider the needs of the people and see to them, but leaders that sacrifice and deny themselves their own happiness don't seem like leaders that could last. They would only become embittered and possibly become worse than tyrants, acting in the name of the greater good. As with all things, there has to be a balance. And rather than humility or anything else, modern 'leaders' seem to lack a spine.
IchCharacter thanks for the reply. those are some very good points to consider. There is always a balance to maintain.

For some reasons this has a personal meaning for me. On my fathers side we are descendants of royalty. My aunt and cousin have tried looking for my family's castle, and to see if it would still be in our name or belong to the country's government. ;-; it's all a confusing story

That verse reminds me of a paragraph from the Halo book "The Fall of Reach".
--------------
"A leader must be ready to send the soldiers under his command to their deaths,” Mendez said without turning to face John. “You do this because your duty to the UNSC supersedes your duty to yourself or even your crew."
John looked away from the view screen. He couldn’t look at the emptiness anymore. He didn’t want to think of his teammates - friends who were like brothers and sisters to him - forever lost.
"It is acceptable,” Mendez said, “to spend their lives if necessary.” He finally turned and meet John’s gaze. “It is not acceptable, however, to waste those lives. Do you understand the difference?"
"I...believe I understand, sir,” John said. “But which was it on this last mission? Lives spent? Or lives wasted?"
Mendez turned back toward the blackness of space and didn’t answer.

It's not a tv show, it's a book series. It's pretty good IMO.
I love the author, this is so awesome!!
There are multiple mistakes in the lyrics in the description of this video. For example, the description says "The tears I weep in silence are for all my heralds dead." The song very clearly states "The tears I weep in silence AS I MOURN my heralds dead." And that's just one.
I listened to this over and over and over to transcribe...as a favor to my listeners. I'm sorry I made a few mistakes. I spent most on an entire evening. (At the time there were no lyrics up on the internet for the song). Perhaps now there are lyrics posted. If so, I will change mine.
MyMoppet52 | You don't need to apologize. Sorry if I offended you. I just thought you might want to know.
Three queens from different kingdoms and different worlds. All sworn to defend their people from harm. All feel the bondages of guilt for letting their fellow warriors/companions sacrifice themselves for the empire's safety however remain strong.
This reminds me of Game Of Thrones!🐺
It’s giving me Bluestar from Warriors and Satine from The Clone Wars
I love this cause it reminds me of a movie 😭 it is also like me🙃
If I wanted to use this song in one of my videos, would I be allowed if I gave proper credit?
+HammyHamster I can't give approval. (I have had this posted since May 2015 and no one has contacted me or punished me).
MyMoppet52 Alright XD Other people have done the same, apparently so I shall try
+HammyHamster how long is it taking? I'd like to see it.
The singer is not Margie Butler, but Shandeen (me). I wrote the music for this song and performed as Queen Selenay on the CD for Firebird Arts. If you want to make a fan video, i have no problem with it (as long you give proper credit to Mercedes Lackey for the lyrics, and Shandeen for music). Cheers.
I just went through and read over 150 comments because I got lost in the song. This has been a waste of almost an hour of my life where I could have been sleeping.
(It's almost half past midnight when I'm posting this.)
This song is sung by Shandeen, not Margie Butler. Shandeen is a phenomenally talented artist, in addition to being my wife of 21 years. I’d really appreciate it if you could correct. Thanks!
Would that every person in a position of authority memorize this song and sing it to themselves daily to remind them that they are to SERVE the people.
Thanks to this song, now my D&D character maybe don't want to take the crown
>.> Pardon me while I add this onto my youtube playlist so I don't have to constantly open up a music player to listen to it. I re-read these books only a couple months ago, I don't need to start re-reading them again.
Harm will never come to the Wind u protect... Better I die than that
Gold, and therefore crowns made of it, is actually quite heavy.
The singer of this beautiful piece of music was Shandeen O'Neill not Marge Butler. Shandeen also sang Battle Dawn and Trio.
Anyone else flicking through the comments trying to figure out if this is Elspeth or one of Valdamar's other Queens?
I'd put money on Selene from the "Arrows of the Queen" trilogy. I'm guessing this because the song "Battle Dawn" is sung by the same woman and that song is from the climax of "Arrows Fall." Lackey keeps character voices relatively constant for these albums.
it is the Queen Selenay :D
MV rất hay, i like it 🙄😁😀
I wish this song was on iTunes so I could download it.
Makes me think of Elayne from The Wheel of Time. Ah, the memories.
My fate/stay night saber senses are tingling
I heard this song during a speedpaint video I watched, and instantly thought of the books.
Mylittle Discord speedpaint? wow. thx 4 stopping
Was it by any chance Emala Jiss you were watching for the speedpaint?
Does anyone know what the picture on 2 minutes is?
I go willingly
I like it.... what is it??? What's the origin??? Medieval times???? Amazing story good pics too ??? But it's mysterious to me
The album has different artists and stylings. I heard this long ago on a Wiccan Playlist and researched. I consider that it has historical influences and is based on Medieval times. Sorry, but that's the best I can do. It's a gorgeous song... that's what captured my attention. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. My best, Moppet
MyMoppet52 oh ok thanks for the info tbh I didn't think anyone would comment so thx again
I sure didn't add much. :)
I've been ill and gone a long time. I used to answer just about every comment. Last 2 yrs has been rough. Usually, I can help out. Sorry I wasn't better for you with info. So glad you heard this though. Wishing you a good week, Moppet
This song is by Mercedes Lackey, sung by someone else. It's set in the world of Valdemar and tells the story of Queen Seleny. The books start with "Arrows of the Queen". Well worth a read. It is set probably in medievil times, most likely.
Thank you. I appreciate your help, Moppet
This was sung by Shandeen not by Margie Butler. :) It is a lovely song though.
Thanks :-)
Is there a instrumental version of this song? I really want to do this song for my schools talent show, but I need a karaoke version....
