- Demonsbane, based on the Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey and sung by Heather Alexander. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.
Lyrics:
Along a road in Hardorn, the place called Stony Tor
A fearful band of farmers flees Karsite Border war.
A frightened band of farmers, their children, and their wives,
Seek refuge from a tyrant, who wants more than just their lives.
Now up rides Herald Vanyel. "Why then such haste?" says he.
"Now who is it pursuing, whose anger do you flee?
You are all of Hardorn, why seek you Valdemar?
Is Festil no protection? Nor bide all his men too far?"
"Oh, Vanyel, Herald Vanyel, we flee now for our lives,
Lord Nedran would enslave us, our children and our wives-
He'd give our souls to demons, our bodies, to his men.
King Festil has not heeded, or he happens not to ken."
Now up speaks Herald Vanyel. "The Border is not far-
But you are all of Hardorn, and not of Valdemar,
You are not Randale's people-can call not on his throne-
But dammed if I will see you left so helpless on your own!"
So forth goes Herald Vanyel, and onward does he ride,
On Stony Tor he waits then, Yfandes at his side.
With Nedran's men approaching, he calls out from on high,
"You shall not pass, Lord Nedran! Nay I shall not let you by!"
Now only Herald Vanyel stands blocking Nedran's way
"Now who are you, fool nothing, that dares to tell me nay?"
Now up speaks Vanyel his voice like brittle glass;
"The Herald-Mage called Vanyel-and 'tis I you shall not pass!"
Now there stand great Lord Nedran, behind him forty men,
With wizard there beside him he pales, and speaks again-
"So you are Herald Vanyel-this place is not your land.
So heed me, Herald Vanyel; and now turn aside your hand."
"Let be; I'll give you silver, and I shall give you gold,
And I shall give you jewels fair that sparkle bright and bold,
And I shall give you pearls, all the treasures of the sea,
If you will step aside here, leaving these poor fools to me."
"What need have I of silver with sweet Yfandes here?
And all the gold I cherish is sunlight bright and clear.
The only jewel I treasure's a bright and shining star,
And I protect the all helpless not just those of Valdemar."
"Now I shall give you beauty, women slaves and men,
And I shall give you power, you'll never see again,
And I shall give you mansions and I shall give you land,
If you will turn aside this day, aside and hold your hand."
"Now beauty held in bondage is beauty that is lost.
And land and mansions blood-bought come too high the cost.
The power I have already-all power is a jade-
So turn you back, Lord Nedran if of me you are afraid!"
Lord Nedran backs his stallion, the wizard he comes nigh,
"Prepare yourself, bold Vanyel, for you shall surely die!"
The wizard calls his demons, the demons he commands,
And Vanyel, Herald Vanyel, only raises empty hands.
The wizard calls his demons, the sky above turns black.
The demons strike at Vanyel, he stands and holds them back.
The demons strike at Vanyel, they strike and hurt him sore,
But Vanyel stands defiant, only to raise his hands once more.
The sky itself descending now, upon bare Stony Tor
It hides the awful battle. The watchers see no more.
The wizard shouts in triumph-too soon he vents his mirth.
For Vanyel calls the lightning down, and smites him to the earth!
The clouds of black have lifted; and there on barren ground
Stands Vanyel hurt, yet victor, the demons tied and bound.
He looks down on Lord Nedran; his eyes grow cold and bleak-
"Now I shall give you, Nedran, all the power that you seek-"
Now Vanyel frees the demons, and Nedran screams with fear,
He sets them on the Karsites, who first had brought them here.
He sets them on the Karsites, and on the Karsite land.
They look down on Lord Nedran. And they do not stay their hand.
Now Vanyel calls the farmers. "Go tell you near and far,
How thus are serves the tyrants who would take Valdemar.
I am the bane of demons, their query I defend.
Thus Heralds serve a foeman and thus Heralds save a friend!" Видеоклипы
You have to love how the instance Nedron finds out who has facing, he goes from confident to offering him everything under the sun to try and get Van to leave him alone.
I don't know anything about these characters or why Vanyel would be so terrifying, but damn, Nedren's wizard seems to be a little slow on the uptake.
Nothing about that conversation would make me think it was a good idea to pick a fight with him. King of an apparently powerful empire realizes he can't buy out an unarmed man and just backs up? The farmers aren't worth it, dude. Just let them keep their souls. You can always rig a fiddle contest or make dubious contracts with Japanese school children.
@@NyanCatHerder Nedren is a lord, not a king. I think that he will be stripped of his title, as slavery is illegal in his land, or be forced to flee. Also, Vanyel was terrifying because at the time, he was successfully doing the job of five wizards.
Well, Van has been explicitly noted to be a magical equivalent of a nuke.
He was the greatest hero of his nation by his 30s, to the point that after he was 'dead' (it's complicated) and there was a kinda geas put over his entire nation preventing any human from even considering magic that is not a heraldic, bardic or healer's gift (which are basically all psionic) as real, songs such as this were still sung rather regularly with the full connotations that they were historical, rather than myths.
@@NyanCatHerder as I'm sure you've read in other stories, Mages of all power rankings have a special "conduit" in their brains that let's then materialize magical energies into the physical plane. As we know generally these channels develop naturally to a certain degree. Vanyell on the other hand actually had no mage gift originally, his conduits never fully opened to the power of any kind. So he was was talented Minstrel but not capable of Mage craft. Heraldic Mind Magics or Healer Magic. Unfortunately for Vanyel or Fortunately depending on how you look at it, Vanyel was the catalyst to very powerful magics gone wrong, in the process ALL of his Conduits were blasted wide open and seared into that position. With training he this became The most powerful Adept to walk the Lands. In later books you hear how he's described in history by his enemies and how terrified they were of him. He was a 1 man magical army and he showed no mercy to those that harmed the weak or innocent
@@NyanCatHerder So,Beldandy basically covered it, but the short version is that Vanyel basically held the border they are on. By himself. For about 3 years. He took on, and stopped, several full invasions, attacks by demons, and an untold number of other foes. So Nebren hears he's facing Vanyel, the equivalent of a one man army. Neden was a mortal staring into what became an actual legend among his people, of the man who faught, AND WON, against the physical incarnation of their god.
I love how this singer voices the characters. Especially Nedren. Of course how she sings Vanyel comparing silver to Yfandes near tears my heart....
WELL, given that Yfandes is a COMPANION , ( google for heralds of Valemar Companions ) its actually quite Correct!
with WHAT a Companion IS, in Valdemar! Gorgeous white Horse in shape, blue eyes SILVER HOOFS THAT CHIME LIKE BELLS when said creature walks...💝
"Do not call up what you cannot put down." :)
Å
Or turn.
My favorite lines are:
"the powers, I have already
All power is a jade"
Because anyone who has read and learned how he had gotten them, and what it had cost him would agree with Van that the power really was not worth it.
Mind, the kingdom in and of itself profited massively, and very probably could and would have gotten destroyed without Van, so pragmatically speaking it was worth it in that nebulous 'greater good' mien, but only because Van himself was great and good.
Yeah, imagine a Karsite prophet with his amount of power. That would have been _bad_

Even the Sunlord has limits on his patience. Such a one would not have been allowed. They blasphemed His writ enough , until He lost patience and named Solaris, to teach them a lesson.

My personal favorite is
“Now up speaks Herald Vanyel, his voice like brittle glass.
“The Herald-Mage called Vanyel and ‘tis I you shall not pass.”
No threat or demonstration of power. Just a simple statement of fact.

This is one of those “fuck around and find out” moments
Quite a proper paladin. Assist all helpless, defy evil, set the demons back on those who summoned them.
More like herald mage
But Herald Mages don't exist except in comparatively recent literature in our parallel Universe. Paladins did; compare Roland Orlando, the companion of Charlemagne in reality as well as both Sir Galahad and El Cid in classic literature. All of their stories occurred in our real world not in a parallel one.
+Alan Lambert el cid is real. he lived in the 11th century
But the stories of the Cid were not written for centuries after his death, therefore he's as much legend as the rest.
Alan Lambert I guess don't mess with the white mage
I handed these books to my 17 year old son a week ago. He finished all 3 and started into Foundation and is demanding I buy him more! All this because he heard this song.

All amazing reads.
And if you like her valdemar books and want to read modern day urban fantasy check out her Elves on the Road universe
With first 3 or 4 serrated edge books, they are about elves running racing cars and focus on a human racer and magic user.
And also the bedlam bard books about a modern day bard which is a fun few books, set in the same world as the car racing elves and thier human mage that the first few serrated edge books focus on.
All Hail Herald Vanyel! All honour to him. Even dead, he never stopped protecting Valdemar. Though.. usurping Firesong's gate was rude.
🤣🤣🤣
"tearing their elaborately braided white hair out in clumps!"
he might have given them a bit of a heads-up!
Rude yes but rather funny when you take into account the reactions he got from the Mages lol. Especially telling Elspeth to shut her mouth
If you have not gotten an answer, it is mentioned in "Magic's Pride", the second book, the scene with the luthier. Mercedes Lackey is the author. The first book is "Magic's Promise", and the last is "Magic's Price"
Isn't Magic's Pawn the first book of The Last Herald Mage trilogy?
It's Magic's Pawn then Magic's Promise and finally Magic's Price
NOT QUITE! THE 1ST book of this trilogy is IS " MAGICS' PAWN" then " Magics Ppromise, THEN "MAGIC's Price"

The Last Herald Mage trilogy holds a special place on my book shelf. It is by far my favorite story and the only one that I actually reread periodically.
philwarblood The whole series is amazing
Mine too. I re-read most of the early Valdemar books, but the Last Herald-Mage and the Arrows Trilogies are the ones go back to most often. But then, they were also the first of Mercedes Lackey's books I read as a young teenager in high school.
What a unique and lovely voice! I don't usually pay particular attention to the actual voice of an artist, but this woman is a wonderful singer. So much expression!
10 years later and I still love it

A true Bards tale.
Thank you for giving voice to these songs. Mercedes lackey is one of my favorite authors and I just love the valdemar series
I absolutely adore this song and a few of your other ones so much so that I broke down and bought the trilogy to read as I had to know more about Vanyle and I've fallen in love
I need more Vanyel in my life. :(
Omg, I saw the pic and was like "Oh, look it's Yfandes" but I thought the pic was randomly used, BUT NO! And I started almost crying in joy and sorrow. Omg Van, our peacock. ;w ;

This is about being yourself and knowing that it matters not what or who you are as long as you are true to yourself and are a good person doing what you can to help even if it just a small thing. This is AWESOME!!!!!! Thanks so much for posting!!!!!
Does anyone else here have the song stuck in their head, forcing them to actually write something? It won´t leave me alone. (I love and hate the song right now.)
After reading through Vanyel's story (a few times over) It actually inspired me to start writing again. Vanyel is such a complex and tragic character, one who truly heeded the call to help and willingly gave his life to keep people free.
I think most of us can sing along to this song... and most of the others
LOVE the carousel horse! gorgeous!
Currently building an Aasimar Celestial Warlock Folk Hero based on this song. Three books for one character.
The amount of skill here is amazing.
This is really great! I had to listen to it more than once to realise who was who, at first I thought Vanue was the attacker and that he won in the end. Quite glad it has a happier ending than that.
Dammit Janet you should read the books, I think you'd really like them! The books are known as the Heralds of Valdemar series, and the best one to start on is Arrows of the Queen.
Vanyel. All stories and tales should end with evil destroyed in the most fearsome and terrible way.
Gods damn, this is amazing!
Just awesome!
They give a little chuckle at 3:39 'so turn you back lord *chuckle around here* nedron if of me you are afraid.
True. All the other people in the novels that I read aren't nearly as human as Vanyel.
Herald Vanyel reminds me a lot of Elmal, from Dragon Pass and Six Ages. A couple very similar 'iconic' acts
Evil is always a menace.
i'd love to have these albums
Wow, I just got back into this series. Hope she dose The Crome Born at some point.
Awesome!
This is beyond well done and I am enjoying the trip done "I need to reread the series again.". It is just nice. As justly precise as that is (
Knowing the true story behind it lessens vanyel's "goodness". He didn't just stumble on farmer's hunted my a mage, he was hunting the mage for vengeance. This was one of 3 mage's under employ by karsite that could have killed 2 of his best friends
The funny thing is that Vanyel himself didn't like the song they made of that event.
Not quite true. All we're told is that the mage killed two Heralds. Based on the other events though, it seems unlikely he was hunting the mage at all. He was explicitly doing the job of five Herald-Mages, plus Karse and Valdemar were at war, so it's not like he'd have been hunting the mage for _vengeance_ anyway. Although I do find the idea of Vanyel rocking up, an absolute mess and exhausted, to this fight and just being done with everything kind of hilarious.
@@John_Smith. in magics power, vanyel reports to tran that he killed the mage that killed mardic and donni. He also says that mage owned a flock of pet demons, and that he turned them back on karse. Since it is unlikely that he pulled the same trick twice, we can assume that was at stony tore
@@xqiuvmah First, the book is called Magic's Promise. Second, the place is called Stony Tor. Third, what's your point? Vanyel is explicitly overworked at the beginning of the story, and Karse and Valdemar are at war. He's literally described as having been on the Karsite border for a year, doing the job of five people. I find it extremely unlikely he hunted the mage down when he was so busy.
@@John_Smith. your right about the book title, I was thinking of the line from the song "magics price", my phone auto corrected tor, to tore. He never did it was for the same mage, but he did mention the patient, determined stalking of one of karse's 3 hired adepts that earned him the nickname "Shadow stalker". The mage of stony tor was one of those 3 as well, and vanyel only ever confirms that he killed the one at stony tor.

The books were written by Mercedes Lackey .
Yes. Him realizing this and coming to terms with it is a major arc of the first book.
Vanyel starts the end of magic this day. When he turns the demons back on karsite, their religion condemn all magic and they start hunting all the mage's outside of valdemar. In valdemar, a powerful sorcerer in the north has been secretly killing children with the mage gift as soon as their power awakens and toward the end of the last book, only 4 herald mage's exists and the sorcerer kills 3 leaving only vanyel who rides north to fight him. He finds that a magic path was carved through the mountains and an army was marching in valdemar. He gives his life to stop the sorcerer and hold the army long enough that valdemar can bring a counter force to oppose them, thus killing the last person who knew how to work magic for hundreds of years
This song is about his end: ruclips.net/video/jHBEzIUx1AI/видео.html
Vanyel died??? Oh poor me. I just found out about the book, and I want to read all the 43 book😔😔
Well, I have to ask if you have read the books? Because Karse still use magic, they are just called priest. All the other lands still had their mages as well. It was just the Vlademar that lost the magic, but it did not matter much because they still had the other gifts or "mind magic".
here after the tv series got announced
WHAT?
good to know that even in Fantasy the concept of Westphalian sovereignty is respected.
Couple of typos in the lyrics. One, I'm pretty sure:
"their query I defend" ---> "their quarry I defend" :D
Yeah. I wish someone would fix that.
This is so totally Valdemarian propaganda! :P
It's still completely awesome, though. :D
Ah, go back to Karse, ya fool. :-P
+Daniel Björkman If Valdemar ever really needed propaganda material, all they needed to do was get a painter to draw a picture of Vanyel. XD
Pretty much.
I mean vanyel confirmed it happened in the second book, tho they do pretty it up. Like they don't talk about how vanyel knew they would attack karsite citizens and cause those with the gift to be discriminated against since it was magic that brought the demons. (Magic) war is hell
"Stands Vanyel hurt but victor."
Voiceover : "It was at this moment he realised, he f***ed up "
Was there something special about this random band of farmers that Nedrin would trade 'silver, gold, jewels, pearls, slaves, lands mansions, and power' in exchange for just 'slaves'?
This song was only barely referenced in the books. Vanyel complains of how the bards all glorify his deeds that he just wants to forget. As for the actual events in the song, he mentions an incident in stony tor and how he once turned demons back on the karsite people
He wasn't just trying to get the peasants, he was also trying to buy Vanyels loyalty and his own life in case Vanyel would come to the conclusion that killing Nedryn for their allied king and seek a reward there.
I don’t know if it applies in the world of Valdemar, though it sounds like it does, demons are very strict about their payment. At the same time they are not picky.
Some farmers and their families or Lord Medron and his men makes little difference to them, especially with their summoner gone.
Elfwood?
Been looking for these songs for a while. Thanks for posting, nice break from love songs.
Is this song the only reference to this incident, or is it actually detailed somewhere in the Vanyel trilogy? If the latter, where exactly, I have been looking through those books and haven't found it yet.
There's an oblique reference to the incident in either Promise or Price, but it's a one paragraph mention that it happened.
@@spectrelead IIRC in the books Vanyel mentioned being distinctly unimpressed with the unwanted fame caused by bards singing about that particular incident.....it meant he couldn't get any peace and quiet when stopping at inns overnight as he travelled.
I just finished the book, there are 2 separate mentions of it. First is just described as him solving a problem on stony tor. The second he says how he turned summoned demons back on to karsite lands.
Send help; I can’t stop listening to this
Maybe this will help: ruclips.net/video/Lb6hCuvQO0w/видео.html

you know for someone calling himself the bane of demons it really sounds like he more helped the demons than anything by setting them free
The Demons vanish with the death of the summoner. Dont feel sorry for the Karsites (the demon summoners). The religion has, at this point, been co-opted and corrupted by evil men who became priests for power and money. The doctorine has been so heavily corrupted that instead of a child burning a symbol of childhood ( like an old toy ), if they show even a trace of "mind magic" precognition for eg, they burn the child. Read the Mage Storm trilogy by Mercedes Lackey, for more detail. Oh and Vanyel is more properly refered to as The Last Herald Mage.
He didn‘t call himself bane of demons.
Essentially he returned after a very long stint at the border where this incident happened and the bards had already turned the incident into the ballad you hear here.

Only problem is Vanyel setting the demons on Karsite land ...that implies he didn't care if they hit the civilians
I also thought that, but I think it means “and he sets them on the Karsites and then they land(descend) on them” poetry is wierd
Also, with this kind of summoning magic, when the mage that summons the demon dies, the spell breaks and the demon disappears.

Is Herald Vanyel?
Gotta love Philips john Davenports
what a chad
Poor Vanyel had to be almost polite while tricking the jerk into a fight. The hardest but best use of diplomacy I have heard of.
And here is how the tale would end if I was in Vanel's place (starting after Nedran's offers)
"Your heart seems proud and noble, and your offer is fair
For power, gold and lands I'll gladly seek demons elsewhere
But do remember Nedran, if my kingdom you attack
No mansion will be grand enough to persuade me to stand back
Your gold and pearls and silver will fund mercenaries
That shall hack your army down like lumberjacks hack trees
The power that you give me now will be felt by you again
And you shall realize too late why they call me demonsbane"
The herald mage took ransom and rode to the sunset
And never returned to this land by farmers' blood soaked wet.
The moral of the story? On strangers don't rely
If you don't build on your own strength then you shall surely die.
that was nice
Seems like GRRM story... no offense, i enjoy both high fantasy and westerosi butcher :D
You wouldn't be a herald then...
smoug007 that is for sure, now the question is, would Valdermar be better of with Nedrin destroyed or exploited in this way?
+Michal Soukup1995 I'd say in the long run worse because the heralds are always know to take the right hand path. This would be an example of the preemptive herald of the generation following the left hand path, and that would tarnish the heralds reputation for possibly as long as Vanyal lived.
