It's a particular shot in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.) where the sword strikes between the body and the shield just right. The song was written as a memorial for a woman in the game who passed away in a car accident, who was a big inspiration to many of the women in the game.
Yes, her name was Burnadette... I remember her well... it was a very sad day when she died... we had two funerals that day... our King died in that car accident as well.
This song teach to any women who hear it, that we have a model to follow in any situation. Some for good, some for bad. But example to do the right thing when our turn came. For me, is my mother.
In all these comments, I see very few mentions of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). We are a medieval reenactment group, and this song is about an SCA fighter; we have many valiant women who take the field in heavy armor along with the men. If you find this song inspiring, look up a group near you; we have active groups all over the world, and you will find few people as welcoming, as enthusiastic to teach, or as good to party with as the folks who share this odd and slightly nerdy hobby.
Depending on which version of this song you listen to, it changes the meaning almost completely, even if the lyrics are the same in both. I love songs like that.
So I started playing rugby this year. Basically the captain of the team taught me how to play and she is my role model. She is always so confident in everything she does. I just want her to know how much everything she has done for me means, even if she didn't know it at the time. The season is over and she is graduating, but this song will always remind me of her and all that she has done for me over the past few months.
I love that one of the images used is of Alanna The First Adventure the first book of the Song of the Lioness Series by Tamora Pierce. That series greatly inspires me and it was what drew me to the fantasy genre many years ago. This song even reminds me of the main character who was the first of a revival of female knights in the books. She was smaller than everyone else in page training and not a natural with a sword, but she persevered and won a place for herself as a Knight of the realm. I would recommend the books to anyone who enjoys reading or liked this song.
Heather Dale, You already know I adore you!! I know this song is not about Rowan but I shared my Ansteorran SCA story with you (and her) years ago and this song still gives me chills!
I always picture in my mind the First of the Lady Knights of the SCA when I hear this song. Her name is Sir Trude Lacklandia, she was even interview by the Smithsonian Magazine for the article about the SCA years ago. At the SCA's 50th Year (June 2016) event there will be a tapestry there with one panel for each year and AS 10 is "Trude's" panel She had to prove that women actually fought in the Middle Ages, armor as a knight, armed as a knight and leading knights... in order for the SCA's Board of Directors to allow her to fight under her own name.
Hey, I just wanted to thank you because I had never heard of the SCA but I'm going to the next meeting in my area. I've always wanted to learn black smithing and sword fighting and now I might actually get to do so =)
This song was actually written about her! I didn't know about the SCA until this month! My boyfriend is a member and I showed him this song and we both had about a half an hour freak out when we both realized this was an SCA song!😂😂I adore that man
Everyone says that this song is empowering for women... I'd disagree, I would say it's empowering for everyone. The biggest thing I take away from this song is: "That person inspired me to be a better person, if they can do it then at least I can try!" I wish I could meet someone like that lady knight in my life...
I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm a guy feminist only insofar that I think women should probably have equal voting rights and the protection of the law in the same sense as men, and that everything else about life and success is their own responsibility. And I hate how much modern feminism seems to want to pin responsibility on men for inspiring and fostering and making way for women, as if they're children and shouldn't be expected to actually compete with men for success the way men have always done with each other. I don't even like the word 'empowering'. I don't see any situation where 'encouraging' wouldn't be both a better word to describe the process of inspiring someone to take more agency in their life, and a better and healthier thing to strive for on someone else's behalf in the first place. As you say, this song is about people of like mind feeling inspired by each other's courage and passion in spite of very real and realistic uncertainty and fear of inadequacy, and trying to be their best selves so as to inspire others in turn without any need to tear down or push responsibility on anyone else for you not being where or what you want to be. And I think it's absolutely beautiful.
This actually hit home for me today. I went into my agriculture major in college feeling so out of place. I disnt grow up on a farm, I'm allergic to moat animals and pollen, and my associates is in art and design...but I had a lot of role models in my life who decides to run with agriculture on small scale from places of computers or nursing and most made businesses with it and that's what I want to do. I want to run my own business that is farm to shelf in the products and this song made me cry with reminding me that since they can do it so can I. And I know ita meant yo be about feminism and what not but honestly it just makes me feel better as a whole.
"A woman can't be pharaoh!" wellll ... last i checked it didn't violate any of the known laws of physics... sooo i mean if its that big of an issue... maybe spell it with an f instead of a ph ?

If you're talking about the image near the end at about the 3 minute mark; That's Diane the Wildmage from Tamora Pierce's 'The Immortals' series. If that's not the shot you were speaking of then I'm not sure.
@redrasegarden That's Martha Jones (played by Freema Agyman) from Doctor Who. @jaruca86 That's Guinevere (as played by Keira Knightley) from King Arthur (the version with Clive Owen)
This songs about the maidens. When they click what May Den really means, they fight, they fight as if their very life’s count on it. You can’t put these women into any group. These women are built from the spine, nature crowns them.
Heck yes, the Immortals Quartet (Daine's story) is still one of my all-time favorite series. Though if I had to pick a favorite among the Tortall books, it'd be Trickster's Choice, closely followed by Trickster's Queen.
This song makes me think of Lady Keladry and how she was inspired by Alanna and how without her example she would never have had the chance to earn her knighthood. Alanna was short and not a natural at sword fighting, but with hard work, grit and determination she blazed a trail for others to follow. She proved woman had what it took to be knights.
I believe Catherine of Aragon should be there instead of Anne Boleyn, as she ruled the kindom in her husband absence, ended revolts, was loved by her subjects and was strong and brave in the face of adversity when her husband unfairly divorced her. Anne Boleyn was basically a husband stealer who did nothing for the welfare of England (pardon my English as Im not a native speaker). The video and the song are both lovely, though =)
I agree with what you said about Catherine, but I think you should do more research about Anne, she was more than a "husband stealer". People often underestimate Anne, and in my opinion that's not fair. (By the way, I'm not a native speaker, too:) )
I love how this comment is arguing about a single picture in a video/song about an archetype, and is actually about one specific person who is definitely not Anne Boleyn. Comparatively speaking, Anne would have been breaking the mold at her time, something that, in itself, was hard to do and rarer still. You are drawing the wrong conclusions about a person and applying modern ethics to her actions, something so so so demeaning to how much courage it took to do the things she *did* do, regardless of how the seem to us today.
Both modern ethics or 16th century ethics apply. Boleyn may have been mold breaking, but she is most definitely not a role model. Take Catherine Parr, who was a writer herself and a great diplomatic, looking for her welfare, and England's, and the princesses'. That's both mold breaking an admirable. Anne did absolutely nothing I can admire, and she only followed her ambitions. I actually pity her.
My father is a martial arts expert and qualified for the 1980 Olympics for Korean Karate. (only qualified because America didn't go to the 1980 games, Moscow Boycott). He says that woman can be great fighters but they can't train the same way men do. Its a well known half truth that men have stronger upper bodies then men, a *lesser known* fact is that women have stronger lower bodies then men. My dad goes on to say that in *all* martial arts, *even boxing* , footwork is the most important thing to get right. So woman can, and *_do_* make great martial artists.

and we will never stand together in a shild wall side by side
but because of her i lift my sword with pride!
If you're talking about the image near the end at about the 3 minute mark; That's Diane the Wildmage from Tamora Pierce's 'The Immortals' series. If that's not the shot you were speaking of then I'm not sure.
I squeeed when I saw the Tamora Pierce pictures! Yay!!
Daine! That was a good series.
Esmerelda! Xena! Pocahontas! These three girls made this video for me
@redrasegarden That's Martha Jones (played by Freema Agyman) from Doctor Who.
@jaruca86 That's Guinevere (as played by Keira Knightley) from King Arthur (the version with Clive Owen)
❤❤❤❤ I love this
The woman that is mentioned in this is Duchess Willow of Ansterora. (not sure of the spelling any more...been more years then this Lord can remember).
This songs about the maidens. When they click what May Den really means, they fight, they fight as if their very life’s count on it. You can’t put these women into any group. These women are built from the spine, nature crowns them.
@tlkGoldenDragon It's Guinevere as played by Keira Knightley, from the King Arthur film with Clive Owen (2004, I think) :)
To those who keep talking about Tamora Pierce's books: Tammy actually recomends this song by Heather Dale on her website :)
@franann1321
It's Kahlan Amnell (played by Bridget Regan) from Legend of The Seeker.
Has anyone else actually READ Alanna? Or wild magic (my favorite) for that matter?
Heck yes, the Immortals Quartet (Daine's story) is still one of my all-time favorite series. Though if I had to pick a favorite among the Tortall books, it'd be Trickster's Choice, closely followed by Trickster's Queen.
This song makes me think of Keladry from Protector of the Small.
Whoa! u remembered Martha Jones! u rock!
The daughter of the great Isabel of Spain!
Princess Celestia
This song reminds me of Eoyn from Lord of the rings😀
same
(although she does give up being a shieldmaiden at the end of the book)
OH MY GOD MARTHA FROM DOCTOR WHO
My father is a martial arts expert and qualified for the 1980 Olympics for Korean Karate.
@Nikolet998 To the best of my knowledge, the chords are C F Am and G. The order should be pretty easy to determine. It might also be G D Em and C with a capo at the fifth fret
Xena and Morganna LeFay.My heros. In one song. Freakin' sweet!
MARTHAAAAAA!!! OMG she was one of my favorites (her,Amy, and Rose were BADASS) And what's her name from legend of the seeker!
Kayla? Kara? Something with a K...

Martha Jones, SWEET! And was that Sojournor Truth I saw in the mix?

Both Evelyn (The mummy returns) and Elena(the Zorro franchise) are the first two heroins that come into my mind when I hear this song
Could you please put up a list of the lovely women shown in this video? Much appreciated!
