- A few people asked where they could get the version of "One of Us" that I used in my Gwen/Morgana vid, so I put together a slideshow for it and uploaded it.
Lyrics:
Before I got to fighting, or when fighting got to me
I looked to find examples on the field of chivalry
And I saw mighty arms much stronger than my arms could ever be
So I thought perhaps that field was not for me
But still I stayed to watch the fighting 'til one figure stood apart
In armour newly fashioned and a helm more pot than art
But each blow was thrown with honour and a lightness of the heart
So I took that step which soon became a start
[Chorus]
Cause she was not the biggest fighter, nor one to raise a fuss
But I remember being proud that she was one of us
And we might never stand together in a shield-wall side by side
Because of her, I lift my sword with pride
She was ladylike and lively, not the type you would expect
With a braver heart than many and a slot-shot to respect
And I guess she'd once decided this was where she'd like to be
And I thought, if she could do it, why not me?
Cause she was not the biggest fighter, nor one to raise a fuss
But I remember being proud that she was one of us
And we might never stand together in a shield-wall side by side
Because of her, I lift my sword with pride
So now as I gather armour, bits and pieces here and there
I think about examples, how you act and what you dare
'Cause you never know who's watching, or how far that story goes
Where'er that lady is, I hope she knows
Cause she was not the biggest fighter, nor one to raise a fuss
But I remember being proud that she was one of us
And we might never stand together in a shield-wall side by side
Because of her, I lift my sword with pride
No, we might never stand together in a shield-wall side by side
Because of her, I lift my sword with pride
In all these comments, I see very few mentions of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). We are a medieval reenactment group, and this song is about an SCA fighter; we have many valiant women who take the field in heavy armor along with the men. If you find this song inspiring, look up a group near you; we have active groups all over the world, and you will find few people as welcoming, as enthusiastic to teach, or as good to party with as the folks who share this odd and slightly nerdy hobby.
Agreed as part of the group, the ladies I've fought tend to be the people you flee in a melee

@@firefox5926 I think there's a chapter out there, but I don't know for sure
Anyone know more about this who can tell me?
@@mariabustamante5296 what do you want to know?
It's a particular shot in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.) where the sword strikes between the body and the shield just right.
The song was written as a memorial for a woman in the game who passed away in a car accident, who was a big inspiration to many of the women in the game.
Yes, her name was Burnadette... I remember her well... it was a very sad day when she died... we had two funerals that day... our King died in that car accident as well.
I love 💘💗♥💓💛💖💘 the name of your Inc.
@@jjenner2452 Would that have been HRM Osis? I remember when he was Midrealm king before Ealdormere independence. He was a truly fine fellow.
Alanna! 'Tis you who first taught me the ways of the warrior maid!
+Mori Rin lol this is about Alanna from Kels POV
+the bat pup I know right? A real amv featuring Kel and Alanna and this song would be so awesome!
:o YES totally!
Alanna? I haven't heard that name in years (also I love how I know which one you mean)
I don't usually comment on things this old but. . . I can literally look over at my bookshelf and see that name and it makes me smile.
This song teach to any women who hear it, that we have a model to follow in any situation. Some for good, some for bad. But example to do the right thing when our turn came. For me, is my mother.
Queen, no... PHARAOH Hatshepsut is my favorite.
"A woman can't be pharaoh!"
"Oh really? Watch me!"
"A woman can't be pharaoh!" wellll ... last i checked it didn't violate any of the known laws of physics... sooo i mean if its that big of an issue... maybe spell it with an f instead of a ph ?
@@firefox5926 Language things are funny. F.e. my history teacher claims that Queen Elizabeth II technically isn't queen. In my country "królowa (queen) means wife of "król" (king), so technically it should be King Elizabeth II.
Yes, feminists have to hate this, but due to not many women being rulers in any kingdom language never created female form.
@@Petaurista13 in germanic languages Queen is literally comes from word for the "wife" as the oldest lady in House.
@@Petaurista13 and both our languages also have word for daughter of "król" ("koról" in mine)
@@EllAntares King derives from old Germanic Küning and means "Queenling" - Queen's man/husband, which can be taken as a hint towards matriarchy in pre Roman times, though there's no chance of proving it. Queen is the same as old Greek "gyn", meaning woman.
I'm of Celtic and Nordic descent so when I hear a song about warriors and warrior maidens and Valkyries then it gets my blood pumping
I hope not from a wound ? :-D
Same
Im not but same
Celtic and Nordic? Are you faroese by chance? (:
Love it
Eowyn comes to mind.
I'm a huge fan of her:)!
Depending on which version of this song you listen to, it changes the meaning almost completely, even if the lyrics are the same in both. I love songs like that.
Everyone says that this song is empowering for women... I'd disagree, I would say it's empowering for everyone. The biggest thing I take away from this song is: "That person inspired me to be a better person, if they can do it then at least I can try!"
I wish I could meet someone like that lady knight in my life...
I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm a guy feminist only insofar that I think women should probably have equal voting rights and the protection of the law in the same sense as men, and that everything else about life and success is their own responsibility. And I hate how much modern feminism seems to want to pin responsibility on men for inspiring and fostering and making way for women, as if they're children and shouldn't be expected to actually compete with men for success the way men have always done with each other. I don't even like the word 'empowering'. I don't see any situation where 'encouraging' wouldn't be both a better word to describe the process of inspiring someone to take more agency in their life, and a better and healthier thing to strive for on someone else's behalf in the first place.
As you say, this song is about people of like mind feeling inspired by each other's courage and passion in spite of very real and realistic uncertainty and fear of inadequacy, and trying to be their best selves so as to inspire others in turn without any need to tear down or push responsibility on anyone else for you not being where or what you want to be. And I think it's absolutely beautiful.
@@noxluxe8674 "I think women should probably have equal voting rights"
"Probably"... fine feminist you make.
I always picture in my mind the First of the Lady Knights of the SCA when I hear this song. Her name is Sir Trude Lacklandia, she was even interview by the Smithsonian Magazine for the article about the SCA years ago. At the SCA's 50th Year (June 2016) event there will be a tapestry there with one panel for each year and AS 10 is "Trude's" panel She had to prove that women actually fought in the Middle Ages, armor as a knight, armed as a knight and leading knights... in order for the SCA's Board of Directors to allow her to fight under her own name.
TheAirborneGator so interesting, thanks for sharing
What a wonderful fact! As a lady SCA fighter, thank you for sharing! The organization has come a long way!
Hey, I just wanted to thank you because I had never heard of the SCA but I'm going to the next meeting in my area. I've always wanted to learn black smithing and sword fighting and now I might actually get to do so =)
This song was actually written about her! I didn't know about the SCA until this month! My boyfriend is a member and I showed him this song and we both had about a half an hour freak out when we both realized this was an SCA song!😂😂I adore that man
This song had an interesting effect on me. Made me start tearing up, but not in a sad way. Also felt like awakening.
Welcome! Warlock or Berserker whichever you be.
@@wherewolfprime LOL, don't know which one I am. Is the berserker a woman?
I felt the same way with Heather Dale’s song, “Flower Child”. Made me tear up in a happy way, especially with the sweet twist at the end
YOU WIN ALL THE AWARDS FOR PUTTING IN MARTHA!
I love that one of the images used is of Alanna The First Adventure the first book of the Song of the Lioness Series by Tamora Pierce. That series greatly inspires me and it was what drew me to the fantasy genre many years ago. This song even reminds me of the main character who was the first of a revival of female knights in the books. She was smaller than everyone else in page training and not a natural with a sword, but she persevered and won a place for herself as a Knight of the realm. I would recommend the books to anyone who enjoys reading or liked this song.
I read that series back in elementary school, they're great books.
It's also my favorite TP series as well. And this song applies to Kel really well, since not only was she partly inspired by Alanna, but she is also an inspiration to other girls. Unlike Alanna, Kel didn't have magic and wasn't in the hand of the Goddess, thereby proving to other girls that even though they might be ordinary, they could become knights too.
Kel was the first one I met… I found Alanna later.
I got to meet Tamora, as a sleep-deprived 13-yo on a school night (thank you, Mom!) and made such an impression, I was told, “Look for yourself later on.”
Sure enough, sleepy or drunk Beka Cooper? That’s definitely me at 13, running on what I thought then was too little sleep (just 6 hours! I now survive on 3-4)
This singer is fabulous!
She is.Her name is Heather Dale
This actually hit home for me today. I went into my agriculture major in college feeling so out of place. I disnt grow up on a farm, I'm allergic to moat animals and pollen, and my associates is in art and design...but I had a lot of role models in my life who decides to run with agriculture on small scale from places of computers or nursing and most made businesses with it and that's what I want to do. I want to run my own business that is farm to shelf in the products and this song made me cry with reminding me that since they can do it so can I. And I know ita meant yo be about feminism and what not but honestly it just makes me feel better as a whole.
i love the Tamora Pierce! her books never get enough love!!
So I started playing rugby this year. Basically the captain of the team taught me how to play and she is my role model. She is always so confident in everything she does. I just want her to know how much everything she has done for me means, even if she didn't know it at the time. The season is over and she is graduating, but this song will always remind me of her and all that she has done for me over the past few months.
I was the only female firefighter in the USAF. Not only the FD but in the military lol It was tough cuz I am not a big woman. 5'1 so it was challenging. Wouldn't change a thing though. I want to learn how to sword fight. Always a fan of Medieval shows and movies. I collect them I guess I need to learn how to wield on now!! Love this song!!! Fun to sing to!!!!
Thank you for your Service
Look up HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). its a martial arts movement where we study medieval and renaissance European fighting arts, but studying the hundreds of old manuals still in existence. its a rapidly growing hobby, but still in its infancy. Its also like no fighting rush I've ever experienced. its not just bashing like the SCA; its a true martial art that is every bit as technical, elegant, and effective as any Asian martial arts. Google the HEMA Alliance, and they can show you where you nearest club is.
Charles U. Farley Thank you I def will. I hope one is close to me!!!!!!
thank you for your Service and have a great day or night

Heather Dale, You already know I adore you!! I know this song is not about Rowan but I shared my Ansteorran SCA story with you (and her) years ago and this song still gives me chills!
Thank you Heather! and Thank you Rowan AND Hector....best male Rose of all time!
This song pushed me to take my first step. I called a Marine recruitment office a couple weeks ago. I'm not gonna deny that right now I'm severely out of shape and am sucking up the workouts, but I took the step which will become a start. I've been fighting for my own survival my whole life since I was only 3. Feel free to watch my journey from sucking, to sucking less, to eventually not sucking on my channel.
+Andy Engle Kick ass and take names!
And of course, do what you gotta do to do what's right by you.
I have faith in you!!! Kick Butt!!!
You can do thia
That's really cool. I hope you inspire others, like this song inspired you.
Would love to hear how you stand now, so will go hunt your channel
Joining the military is a very shitty idea.
this song proves that no mater what gender you are you can fight no mater how small or frail you are,it proves that woman are fighters to, we may not look like it but us females can
When I saw Xena that made this video for me. Awesome song, awesome work, thanks! ^.^
Xena? She's really a male with a short skirt.
HEATHER DALE, YOU MAKE THE BEST SONGS.
OMG, Katara at 0:58, THANK YOU.
My father is a martial arts expert and qualified for the 1980 Olympics for Korean Karate. (only qualified because America didn't go to the 1980 games, Moscow Boycott). He says that woman can be great fighters but they can't train the same way men do. Its a well known half truth that men have stronger upper bodies then men, a *lesser known* fact is that women have stronger lower bodies then men. My dad goes on to say that in *all* martial arts, *even boxing* , footwork is the most important thing to get right. So woman can, and *_do_* make great martial artists.
I'm a huge fan of Heather Dale!!!! The Woman is Sooooo BEAST!!!
MULAN! Yahoo!
....
Oh, cool song, nice work and all that jazz too of course! ;)
Joan of Arc. And all the wonderful women who support us everyday... this song reminds me of them.:)
YES!!!! I think it captures the way Kel felt about Alanna :) awesome.
And the way those girls at the joust felt about Kel
Brienne of Tarth
lol i doubt that she (or anyone from GoT) was this happy and in high spirit..ever.
that is one thing I dislike about those books, that you know the ending won't be any happier than the beginning or any of the parts in the middle
whereas in lotr there are dark moments, but there are happy moments also
holy shit was legit thinking this instantly
WTF?! Breinne's a great fighter and is not lady like! She beat the Hound!
House Mormont.
This song is about KEL! She's my favourite character in the Tortall universe. She didn't have magic all she had was determination and courage.
+Alison O'Connor . . . you are my bestie I thought the EXSACT same thing!
the bat pup
Her story is my favourite of all the Tortall books.
Daine is mine but Kel is deffinetly second
+Alison O'Connor
This song is actually about one of Heather Dale's colleagues in the SCA. Even better, in my opinion.
Jonathan Hughes
I know it isn't actually about anyone in the Tortall universe but the way I see it this is about Kel's attitude towards Alanna and fighting in general. Still though anyone in the SCA(particularly Ealdormere) are the most incredible people in _this_ world
This songs about the maidens. When they click what May Den really means, they fight, they fight as if their very life’s count on it. You can’t put these women into any group. These women are built from the spine, nature crowns them.
Has anyone else actually READ Alanna? Or wild magic (my favorite) for that matter?
Heck yes, the Immortals Quartet (Daine's story) is still one of my all-time favorite series. Though if I had to pick a favorite among the Tortall books, it'd be Trickster's Choice, closely followed by Trickster's Queen.
This song makes me think of Keladry from Protector of the Small.
This song makes me think of Lady Keladry and how she was inspired by Alanna and how without her example she would never have had the chance to earn her knighthood. Alanna was short and not a natural at sword fighting, but with hard work, grit and determination she blazed a trail for others to follow. She proved woman had what it took to be knights.
This recording makes me cry and I have no idea why...
Its been years and I still love this song
Super inspiring song. Love the upbeat tune. The pictures of historical women was great!!
This song makes me feel so powerful
*cracks up* Martha! Thanks for including Dr. Who. That made my day.
Wonderful music, stirring lyrics well-matched to the images. Thanks for this.
This song reminds me of Eoyn from Lord of the rings😀
same
(although she does give up being a shieldmaiden at the end of the book)
Do not walk ahead of me as I might not follow.
Do not walk behind me as I might not lead.
Instead, walk beside me as my equal and together we CAN and WILL do great things.
Listening to this after having a chat with a friend about a writing project, that I only feel confident starting because he inspired me with his. Because of him I lift my pen with pride :)
Joan of Arc, Queen Liliuokani, Elizabeth I, Esmeralda, Katara, Martha Jones, Harriet Tubman...all that's needed is Rapunzel and Merida!

What a beautiful story. There is a way you can honor your captain. Next year there'll be an uncertain, maybe even scared girl on the team. You can be her model. Take the good that was done for you and pass it on. Good luck!
Esmerelda! Xena! Pocahontas! These three girls made this video for me
I JUST LOVE THIS RHYTM GUITAR, WHATTA GREAT IDEA TO PLAY LIKE THAT.
OH MY GOD MARTHA FROM DOCTOR WHO
This song is so lovely
True. My point was more along the lines that men are more disposable then women, not that they don't have a role to play within a society. But my point still stands: using women in risky roles such as warfare is a short term investment that slows you down in the long run.
awesome video!! Was really cool to see Maid Marion, Morgana, Martha and many other very brave woman who have fought hard to make an impact on everyone around them. Not going to lie it was rather motivating
TIGERLILY FORM NEVERLAND!!!! AND MORGANA FOR MERLIN!!!! YASSSS!!!!!
I love Morgana. I watch Merlin over and over on Netflix. I could quote everyones parts by now. I love to hate her. Awesome show and character.
i loved morgana, I just really hated the path her character took (and also all the times she's nocked out, and not killed on the spot. it does turn out later on that both she and merlin are nigh-immortal, but they could have at least tried to kill her while she was defenceless)
in the beginning, the only bad guy is uther, and all the problems in the show would be fixed of he had died, and morgana would never have 'turned evil'
Gar Tahk Ahhh another Merlin junkie. I love it. Uther was horrible but he did have a few moments were he seemed to have a small heart. Being King is a very heavy load to toe. Not defending him by any means I just thought Agrivaine (sp) was more of a traitor when it came to Author and Morgana. It is funny though how I can watch it over and over and still find something new in it. Especially with some of the herbs. I make my own home remedies and do blessings and other things (I am intuitive) and to hear them talk of things I use is weird lol. Hope you had a great New Year fellow Merlin fan!!
I liked uther's ending where he went crazy but he still protects his son... but most of his character I don't like
what I love most about the show is the interaction between arthur and merlin (and occasionally gaius)
'he's at the.. err... pub'
Gar Tahk Agree. I really like Gaius. Especially when he gets the goblin in him. LOL I followed Bradley James after the Merlin series was over and watched him in the new series Damion. I loved it, but it was cancelled after the first session. Wonder what he is doing now and Merlin too. Think his real name is Collin. Fell asleep to "Author's Bane" last night LOL.
Both Evelyn (The mummy returns) and Elena(the Zorro franchise) are the first two heroins that come into my mind when I hear this song
oh my goodness. the royal diary serious. yessss! love the music too, hahah. it's just those books are the embodiment of my childhood and mean the world to me. :3
That picture is from a series call Legend of the Seeker, that particular person's name is Kahlan Amnell played by Bridget Regan , she is what they call a Confessor. It is a great series, lost of legend, lore, and imagination.Good series to check out.
VERY PRETTY SONG
At 0:39 Morgana from the TV series "The adventures of Merlin". I didn't expect to see her in the video!!!! I am so happy right now!!😄😁

To those who keep talking about Tamora Pierce's books: Tammy actually recomends this song by Heather Dale on her website :)
Reminds me of Sir Krysta, one of my parents' friends from the SCA.
Except of course Sir Krysta was far from ladylike or dainty lolol

listen to the last verse,
"I think about examples, how you act and what you dare
'Cause you never know who's watching, or how far that story goes"
the singer was the watcher, and the woman with the "pot helm" is the darer
feel free to disagree with that interpretation.
^~^
I am of the opinion that the singer now tries to be the one who inspires others
@@nicklasdantes2471 I agree. It come full circle where each generation inspires the next. The singer has now become the woman with a pot helm for another girl she will never know.
I would go one further: the singer is ACTIVELY AWARE that she wouldn't be where she is today if it weren't for the example of the woman she saw that day, and she is consciously committed to inspiring other young women, by her example, to pursue their goals and identities.
I respect brave woman and Woman who are in the Need or help. :)
