  • Portage Mule’s boat flip aftermath video! No math required, we promise.
    Follow along as Portage Mule’s May 2023 walleye opening day trip through Mudro continues after flipping the canoe and swimming to shore! Once warm and dry we get right back to reeling in Walleye on Crooked Lake between Wednesday and Thursday Bay. We start a new segment called “New Mules” and give some basic BWCA info to those that may be new to the area to help get started. We also find a new walleye recipe that we both love! It will also help us save weight in our portage packs and open up room for more Tootsie Rolls.

    What a trip guys!! Thankfully the flip was just a bump in the road…..from catching his pole to some really good walleye fishing, memories to reflect on for a long time to come, looking forward to part 3!!

      Thank you! It definitely made a for challenge with the amount of things lost and electronics ruined. But sticking it out was the right answer and we had an amazing week despite everything. And Rob catching the pole lol 😂 unbelievable!

    Glad you guys are okay. We had a canoe flip last year although it was only 5ft. It was scary. Lost some tackle but lesson learned. This was from one of the boys trying to pull a stuck braid line and someone said, "There is is" and all three tilted over to look. LOL.

      @portagemule  3 месяца назад

      Haha! Whoops! You find out it really doesn’t take much. We’ve had close calls before with swirling eddies but this was the full Monty. And yes it’s scary. It gets real very quick. Something I never need to do again

    If you two are newbs and this is your first time up there, this is kind of understandable. Thanks for posting it in honesty. What’s more amazing than the fact that you tipped the canoe is how your gear stayed inside and you made it out without losing more stuff. Why on Earth did you have your cell phones on you? Why wasn’t your gear waterproofed for this scenario?
    What’s good is, like real men, you are adapting and continuing on.

    • @portagemule
      @portagemule  3 месяца назад

      Certainly was a miracle keeping as much as we did. I had my phone to use the camera for photos and video, and it’s waterproof but it sinks pretty quick lol! Now I have a retainer for it.
      Almost all of our gear is waterproofed but since we use external mics with the go pros it renders them not waterproof because the battery port has to be open. Works perfect as long as they stay dry 🤦‍♂️ ‼️

    Wow, Wow; even being that close to shore, that incident could have/should have killed you. I'm getting that rush of fear like you get when a stranger gets near a cliff edge. I always felt like flipping the canoe was that easy, and you proved it. I flipped an unstable solo canoe once in a turbulent eddy behind a waterfall in Quetico (Falls Chain). It was June 1st, but I didn't notice the cold until I got back onshore. At first I thought how Stupid, then I realized what actually happened; I'm pretty sure most of us would have the same instinctive reaction for a fishing pole.

    • @portagemule
      @portagemule  Месяц назад

      I know. It was so cold. Didn’t have time to think about it just react to it. We were life jackets now 100%. Not going to try that twice

    Love the video Robb and Ben! I have to say that your lack of a net skills in landing these fish was impressive. Unbelievable that Robb got his pole back. Good Karma brothers!! Waiting for the last video installment with bated breath. Nice work!!

    • @portagemule
      @portagemule  4 месяца назад

      Landing them without the net took a bit of getting used to 😂. We could not believe when he hooked up on his pole!! We both had one of those “this cannot be real” moments! What are the odds?!

    Great video guys!! Your video's are one of the reasons I'm heading to Crooked in mid May.
    I have a couple gear questions for you, where did you get your minnow containers and did you make your "boards" that hold your camera?

    • @portagemule
      @portagemule  4 месяца назад

      Thank you very much! Headed there in May? We might just see you there and say hi!
      The minnow containers are called Bait Caddy. And they work. However leeches can escape them through the lid opening 😂. Found that out.
      The boards or thwarts are custom made by Rob and work really well. The attach to the gunwales and have a hollow middle to allow any number of attachments from our cameras to Rob’s cup holder. They also have a measuring tape permanently affixed to the top. We also add hooks to them and hang our fish counter, spreaders etc from. Just remember to secure any hanging things to the thwart in case you flip 😆

    We ALWAYS face each other when fishing in a canoe. That resolves so many issues. Wear your life jackets.

    • @portagemule
      @portagemule  3 месяца назад

      We've never tried sitting facing each other. It certainly would make it easier to hear one another! And we bought new life jackets this year with the goal of wearing them more.

  • @golfish8589
    @golfish8589 3 месяца назад +4

    Unbeleavable.
    15 minutes after flipping . The life jackets come off.
    Men....lol
    The big walley can surprisingly be scooped up by the belly.
    Give it a try

    • @portagemule
      @portagemule  3 месяца назад +1

      😂 We put them back on momentarily. Rob and I are testing some new ones this season, hopefully they are more comfortable and we use them more.
      We’ll be trying that method of holding them under the belly with the big ones this season

      Came here to comment this! Very easily could have been a fatal accident given the time of year and not wearing lifejackets…. Then you’d think you guys learned your lesson but nope, 15 min later you guys are back to no LJs. Unfortunate that some people don’t learn.

      Came back and thought about it after the trip. Went out and bought more comfortable life jackets that we would actually wear and this last trip we wore them the whole time. Don’t to chance it

    guys not a fan of the flipping em in the boat . respect the fish a little more than this please. keep em in the water and cup em under the belly only thing is never lean over the gunnel. or Ive pinned the fish against the canoe's side, then lift in the canoe. better for the fish for releasing.

    Appreciate the "tip" on how to turn your canoe into a live well!! Life vests or not had you been farther out results may have been different!! Please learn the slip knot, it is easy and it holds and can be released with a yank! I have retrieved two rods/reels by dragging a large Daredevil along the bottom!! Also, in your defense the MN II is designed to carry 600lbs. When empty you bob like a cork and your center of gravity is at your bellybutton! Love your work and remember "keep the open side up". 🤣 Yes turning the boat into a live well is NOT a tip we recommend trying‼️ We honestly could not believe Rob bringing that rod back up, especially not even trying for it, just happened to be in the same spot

    That’s to bad that you lost some equipment but that’s replaceable. A friend of mine and I had a very similar situation a couple of years ago around the 20th of May and the ice came out late that year too. It was extremely cold. Sure made me nervous. I plan to go again this year with some friends but I am concerned about it happening again. It happens so fast

    • @portagemule
      @portagemule  3 месяца назад

      It definitely changed us. It was quite the shock in the moment with losing the equipment and being freezing for about a day, but it also made us realize we need to change up our approach as well. We're planning to change some things around the next time up there which we'll go over in the next video. From where we are keeping the extra poles to hopefully wearing our life jackets more.

    The 6-9 pound walleye usually take 2-3 minutes before you see them. Then take another couole of minutes to get into the boat. When you hook a big walley, all tmyou feel is the head. And your rod tip s l o w l y goes thump thump thump.
    Fun stuff

    Great video again gentleman! I was more excited to see your part 2 notification come up than a blockbuster release 😂.
    Glad you were able to lick your wounds and get back at it having fun immediately.
    Everyone has their own preference, but my son and I switched to self inflating fishing pfds years ago and never looked back. In fact I constantly find myself walking around the camp having forgotten to take it off they are so light and non intrusive. Just my 2 cents. If you don’t know they’re on, you’ll find yourself wearing them more.
    Can’t wait for the next video, thank you so much for the time involved and your dedication to sharing your experiences with others.

      Thank you very much! Rob and I are going to change up the PFDs we bring this year. I think Rob is opting for the self inflating and I’m trying out what I hope is a more comfortable regular one.
