Boundary Waters camping trip, featuring BWCA Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness fishing in Ely, Minnesota. We loved visiting the BWCA - Boundary Waters Canoe Area for great Walleye, Northern and Smallmouth fishing, as well as camping, and canoeing. In this video, you will see us planning, preparing, canoeing, camping and fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Northern Minnesota. My Brother Ben and I take 4 friends for the first time to experience the BWCA and we document our trip from fishing, cooking on the open fire, gear we use, and being out on the water fish we catch Walleye, Northern and Small Mouth Bass. Being under the moon and stars watching amazing sunsets and moonrises was one of the highlights of this trip.
The BWCA Boundary Waters Canoe Area is an amazing wilderness area with lakes, streams, and forested hills. This is a great place for fishing and camping. You can also go canoeing or kayaking in the many lakes of this region. The BWCA provides many opportunities for outdoor recreation in Minnesota. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is a publicly accessible wilderness area. It is the most heavily used wilderness area in the contiguous United States with approximately 250,000 visitors each year.
The BWCAW is located in northeastern Minnesota and measures about 350,000 acres in size; it is bounded on the north by Jackfish Lake, on the south by Little Indian Sioux River, on the west by Gunflint Lake and on the east by Quetico Provincial Park of Canada. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is one of America’s best-loved wildernesses, with more than 1 million acres of forests guarded by state law against development or logging. Visitors can enjoy hiking on 200 miles of trails in summertime when they are not exploring by canoe or kayak.
The BWCA is a life-changing place. It’s about family and friends, and the wilderness and the waters and the sky. It’s about getting back to nature and living off the land for a few days. It’s about canoeing miles of rivers, exploring lakes, cooking over campfires, telling stories around those same campfires after fishing all day long, or climbing trestles high above the waterfalls plunging into deep gorges.
BWCA in Ely, Minnesota is a chain of lakes and waterways that spans across the border between the United States and Canada. This region has been inhabited by humans for many years and it attracts many visitors and tourists every year. The area features a series of interconnected lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams that starts in Duluth, Minnesota and stretches to Canada. The region has been inhabited by humans for centuries and attracts many visitors annually.
This beautiful region is considered to be one of the most scenic areas in North America. Fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing are popular activities for visitors to do while they are here. The Boundary Waters is a remote, but beautiful wilderness area. This National Wilderness Area in Minnesota is the largest lake-land wilderness in the country. It has been preserved by Congress and designated a National Scenic Area under the Wilderness Act of 1964, which prohibits most activities including roads and logging. The BWCA surrounds 1,000 lakes and contains over 1 million acres of forested land with over 1,000 miles of canoe routes.

Best bwca content video by far
Thank you!!!
This was very enjoyable to watch. You guys are all hilarious. It is criminal there are not more people viewing and enjoying this amazing content. Better than 99% of the other content on RUclips. Please don’t stop making videos.
Thank you Peter! We’re thrilled to hear such amazing feedback! We put a lot of effort into documenting our trips and it’s awesome to hear people enjoying them as much as us!
And we’re currently working on two full trip videos, so no plans of stopping!
I have camped at the site where the South Bay narrows down heading into main lake portion of horse lake on the left as you head north. No shade from lack of trees but fishing was great from camp.
We haven’t camped at that spot yet, but loved our time on Horse.
@@portagemule did you camp on the west side of the lake just north of the small islands and rapids where you fished? Was it a good campsite?
our spring trip down the royal river was the same situation this spring. outfitter said that it was passable 2 weeks after the guy overturned on a tree, and one of our canoes got a little close to the same. rerouted and headed toward east pike, which was nice because the portage was unpassable so we know we were the first ones coming from the macfarland side for the year.
I really enjoyed this video.
Thank you, we’re glad you liked it! Stay tuned for more great videos!
Love your videos. Great humor mixed with wholesome content.

GREAT VIDEO
Thanks HeartlandBBQ!
Great fishing, keep going.
Thank you for the support!
Hey guys, love watching all your videos. You do a great job filming, editing, and catching fish! Question…….where did you get the adjustable wood board you mount your fish finder on? Did you make that yourself, or is that something that can be found on the web or locally in Ely?
Thank you! We do everything in house and that means a lot that people appreciate the effort. As for the thwart - it’s something Rob made custom. If you could send an email to info@portagemule.com we’d be more than happy to send photos of it and Rob can give you more info about it
Thanks Ben! I’ll drop Rob a note.
That was fun to watch! I always argued a little with my brother (who always wanted to go look for more) about going looking for fish when we have already found fish 😂 Great content, looking forward to more videos in the future, new sub here.
It’s so hard to remind yourself - we’re here to catch fish, and we’re catching fish! You start thinking, well maybe if we try over here…
Thanks for the support, we’ll be bringing more videos as fast as we can!
South american fisherman enjoying this awesome content!😃great an beautiful fishing locations ! Will get suscribed and will recommend this channel to fishing friends.
Thank you Alfredo Arbe! What do you fish for mostly?
@@portagemule We`re allways behind Blue Wolf fish ,Hoplias lacerdae ( locally known as " tararira Tornasol") There r other subtropical predatory species that r also a lot of fun to catch, golden Dorados are about 80 miles from my home also. That 1/4 ounce jig looks awesome! I have a thousand comment/ question for this video. Very impressed with monster pikes also. Since they`re no present here is of course a dream for angler.
We had to look up those fish, they are pretty wild looking! Love to catch those one day
That big rock that water is spilling over is a campsite I believe
Watched a lot of your videos. Did ya'll head into Mudro again this year? How was it?
Yes we did, we went opening week and it was our best yet. Tons of fish and tons of bugs 😂 but a really amazing trip. Thank you for watching!
@@portagemule can't wait for the video. Our group is heading into Mudro in a couple weeks
It’s like folding a bowling ball in half
Great vid. What were you using as anchor for that current?
Hi TopWaterWes!
We actually use a basketball hoop as an anchor! We close one end of the hoop with a carabiner, put large rocks (so they don’t slip through the holes) in and then tie off the other end with another carabiner. The top carabiner is then tied to a nylon rope that we can attach to either end of the boat.
This way we don’t have to carry a heavy anchor in and can modulate the weight of the anchor depending on wind/current
@@portagemule awesome!
We can’t take the credit for that idea, we saw the guys at Upper Lip doing that and copied it. It works great!
Accessary thrawt diy measures.
Hey Chuck,
So that thwart measures 39 in long and it's 3 and 1/2 in wide and it's 3/4 of an inch thick. It has a 5/8 in router out center for the accessories. I've used an African teak that I got from Rockler in Minneapolis. Once I had it fabricated routing the edges and routing out the center I used a spar urethane on it so that it would stand up to the water even though the teak already will. I also installed the 36-in tape measure directly onto the thwart. Best thing to do is measure your canoe and custom make yours to the specifications you prefer. I don't think you need to go with such an expensive piece of wood to be quite honest with you a hardwood of any kind and then spar finished would last on many trips. Hope that answers your question if you have any others just let us know.
Thanks
Rob
How were you fishing that spoon? Straight reeling or jigging?
Hi David, great question! And Rob and I actually differ on what we do.
When I use a spoon ie the Cyclops or the Dare Devil I am reeling in at a medium fast rate only letting sink for a second or two after casting.
When Rob is using Larry’s Copper Magic he is reeling in faster with a fast jerking motion every few seconds similar to setting the hook. He swears the Northern Pike can’t resist it!
what paddles are those??
They are CISIBOOK carbon fiber paddles from Amazon. $169.00 and worth it!
Does anyone know what song was playing around the 35 minute mark?
Hi Abbieweston5974, all the music we use in our videos was either written, produced, and or composed by Portage Mule in collaboration with other artists! In order to show the customization of our music the words “Portage Mule” is in every song. The song at that mark is one of our newer songs and will be on our website soon! For more info send us an email at info@portagemule.com
What depth finder set up do you guys use?
Hi Matt,
Thanks for the question. We use the Garmin Stryker 4 for our display unit and we customized it using a Scotty's transducer arm, switched out the battery that came with it from a lead battery to a lithium ion Yak Attack battery, and purchased a separate RAM Mount to attach the display to our custom-made thwart. We also purchased a toiletries bag from Amazon and then had a tailor add some straps to keep the battery and all the wires contained.
The Yak Attack battery is 10,000 mAh and we get about 30 hours of use out of one charge. Just monitor your voltage and don’t go below the manufacturer's recommendation which is visible on the unit.
Also we did a mini tutorial on it in our Lake Three video if you check it out and see what it looks like.
Feel free to email us with questions too, at

Hey , thanks for the reply! That is very helpful ! Keep up the great content!!

Do you sell those copper spoons?
Hi Daniel,
We do did you receive the email from us?
@@rob3460 I did not i also messaged you though your website
@@rob3460 so I got your email and I responded too.
Where the hell are you guys fishing. No mention of it. Thanks
Hi Mike!
On this video we’re in northern Minnesota fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area out of the Mudro entry point near Ely, Minnesota.
Our plan was to try to make it to Crooked Lake, however, due to the high water, we were not able to get down the Horse River. So all the fishing in this video was in Horse Lake.
More specifically, there was moving water between Fourtown and Horse that we fished where it flowed into Horse on the southeast part of the lake
@@portagemule Nice country brother I'll sub up. Looking forward to your next adventure 😀
