  • Perhaps the hottest tactic to catch walleye in northern Minnesota in recent years is power fishing with a slip bobber and leech in conjunction with forward facing sonar.
We fish Leech Lake shortly after the Minnesota opener with Dusty Minke. We break down how to use and set up Lowrance Active Target for finding fish along the one two punch of slip bobbers and leeches along with a jig and minnow depending on the conditions. As a rule of thumb, we found the slip bobber and leech to be more effective when there was no wind and we saw the jig and minnow shine when the fish became more fired up in wind. Leech Lake often fishes much better with some wind.
Leech Lake is a renowned destination walleye fishery near Walker, Minnesota. Besides a healthy walleye population, this area also boasts great panfish, bass and musky. There are also several resorts on Leech Lake with great hotels, restaurants and shops in the community of Walker.

Jason, I've just purchased a Mirro Craft 18' Outfitter boat that has no motor. The old motor was a 90 tiller. I would like to know what your take is on tiller vs side steer. 99% of my fishing will be on Rainy Lake, some on The Missouri Reservoirs and some on Lake Nipigon.

I like running a tiller myself. I like to back troll, like the room and like the boat control. I grew up fishing with a tiller and have always liked running a tiller. A windshield is nice in November or when it is really windy and you have to run long distances. Windshield might also be easier to sell.

Leech is a big lake that you have to respect. You could definitely fish some of the bays on the nice days. Make sure however to check out many of the small lakes in the area, lots of great fishing for small boats.

I have livescope and it's hasn't really helped me catch more fish. I'm sure once I get it figured out it will. It's a skill you have to learn. It's not shooting fish in a barrel like most think
