Steve, ordered two of these so nice to see it in action. Only question I have is? Is it not possible to change the modes with the button on the bike? Seems annoying having to get your phone out to change the mode?

RE: Fits all bikes Innovative product and great review. I have an extra large Trek XL hybrid bike. I'm forced to return the PB II for it does not get close enough to the wheel, or at least I can't get it to . There's a diagram for that showing no more than 0.8 inches distance or it not fit right..
It does fine on bumpy roads since the unit is calibrated to be against the tire at the proper pressure. It looks and feels durable. However I wouldn’t take it on extreme wet gravel. Thanks, Steve
The unit I tested required my phone to set the riding modes. Once I set the mode I could put the phone away. Not sure about the final production units. That would be a good question for the manufacturer LIVALL. If you are carrying your phone it shouldn’t be an issue
@@steveretiredandcycling Thank you for replying Steve, I often go out without my phone, and sometimes when I do take it the battery dies as my phone is pretty old now and battery life is poor. Would be nice to have a low-tec version available.
It looks great, It could be a good idea for future models of the pikaboost to have a self charge mode, for instance when on a flat or downhill ride the mini wheel turns into a dynamo of sorts and instead of propelling the bike forwards it instead converts the motion of the spinning wheel into electricity and charges the battery back up even possibly auto switching between modes when out on a ride to extend the ride distance, dynamos have been around for years so it’s definitely possible I just don’t know if it’s worth it yet? Maybe as battery technology progresses it could become a thing? Who knows 🤷🏻♂️
Hi Tim and thanks for your comment. The Pikaboost 2 has a regen feature. When going downhill it charges the battery. Not sure how robust the charging is. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
Hi Dennis, I'm glad you asked. It's the most comfortable seat ever made. It's made in California by the Infinity Bike Seat company. I own three of their saddles. My wife and I won't use anything else. The design allows your "sit bones" to rest in the cut-outs for great comfort. The seats are the major choice for the "Race Across America". Unfortunately they are very expensive but worth every dollar for a serious cyclist. Here is a link to their website. www.infinitybikeseat.com Use the discount code MYSEAT to get a discount. I plan on a dedicated video about the seat in about eight weeks. Make sure you subscribe to my channel to catch the video. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
When will they add noise cancellation to the unit??? I’m being very serious. (Yes, just like the ones you can find in earbuds or headphones.) The noise it produces is the one thing holding me back from jumping on board with this generation… and I’m going to guess there’s a relative “range of sound” that can be heard on all or most wheels and they could easily “tune” the ANC (active noise canceling) towards that range. Keep in mind: this doesn’t need to be same quality or tiny size that you find in super expensive earbuds so, again, I’m guessing it wouldn’t be that much of an upfront expense (using a primitive device that creates the negative soundwaves to drown out loudness), but, in turn, would make a huge impact in user experience & translate to better sales. I’d love for someone to share this with Livall!!!
Hi there and thanks for your comment. Great idea that will be passed on to LIVALL. The unit being mounted behind the rider makes very little noise. My indoor demonstration was loud because of the camera microphone being placed close to the motor. When riding, I found that I couldn't hear the motor disengage (turn off) when I applied the brakes. The only noise was from the units wheel turning against the bicycle tire. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Many e-scooters cause fire. Happened to my uncle. Is this safe to charge inside att home? Or can it burn my hose down? If it does will Livall pay for a new house.
I feel safe charging the unit in my house since LIVALL told me that the production units will have batteries that comply with the highest standards. They should have the CE certification mark
I have a question, if you do not install the remote, can you still ride the bike? If you press the break without the sensors attaches, the motor still disengage or not?
I believe the brakes will stop the bike no matter what mode you're in. The motor will disengage since it's designed to sense the resistance of braking independent of the remote. A lot of safety features built into the motor unit.
Thank you for this great review, ive just purchased one unfortunately without thinking that this would interefere with my rear bike rack which is in frequent use, so not sure how im going to get around that one, do you know if they accept returns for a full refund? 😊

Hi Ruslan and thanks for the question. LIVALL reached out to me to test, evaluate and make a video of the unit. They wanted to get "real world" experience with the PikaBoost 2 before it was offered for sale. Thanks again, Steve
Hi Hennie and thanks for the question. I would have to ride at least 4000 km on the PikaBoost 2 to make a judgement. I did a bit of research and found the leading cause of premature tire wear on a friction drive setup is misalignment, low tire pressure or inadequate wheel pressure on the tire. The PikaBoost 2 calibrates proper wheel to tire pressure upon installation. Plus it has a feature that lifts the wheel off the tire when not in use. On paper it doesn't look like excessive tire wear will be a problem. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
How does this not destroy your tire over time from the friction. If the friction wheel isn’t tight on your tire how it can possibly give you the power you require for any degree of slope? It’s a super long review that doesn’t actually show you riding very much. Sure it spins the wheel on a bike stand with no resistance. I want to see real world performance.
According to the manufacturer, the unit is designed to calibrate the proper pressure against the tire. I agree that over time any friction drive will add to the wear of the tire. The units name "PikaBoost" advertises to give a boost going up a minor grade. I've experienced this however it will only give minimal aid climbing up a steep hill. When I ran the unit on my bike stand it was to show how the motor cut's out when applying the brake.
Design puts a lot of alternatives to shame. Bigger buttons may be easier on the remote. And my guess, from experience, is that the motor is just slightly under powered - to keep the peace and that. Definately want one thou. Ricky.
What? What? What did you say? You gotta speak louder, pal; the friction drive is on full power. I can't even hear that police helicopter overhead. How often do you go through tires? Well, I got a subscription for overnight replacements. Is my parody correct? Fantastic review, by the way. Subscribed.
Hi there and thanks for the humor! You're parody is not correct. The tires don't wear out once a month unless you put 5000 miles on them. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
@@steveretiredandcycling Thanks for replying! Are you still using the device? I'm surrounded by steep hills with grades ranging from 8 to 15%. I'm wondering if this would help at all.
I've used it a few times since the video. I honestly don't think the unit will give you much of a boost up 8 to 15% hills. I've noticed that a grade over 4% gives a very minimal boost. Otherwise it works fine on gradual rolling hills.
Hi Mimi, Yes the battery is made in China. However, it is made to the highest quality standard having the internationally recognized CE mark. To qualify fro the CE make, the battery must comply with strict quality standards. Thank you and have a good, Steve
This would seem to be illegal in many places if it gives you drive while you are not pedalling.. This is an Indiegogo crowd funder not a finished product, it seems, so good luck with that.
Yes, anyone riding an e-bike or e-bike retrofit kit needs to be up on their local laws. Most e-bikes have a "throttle only" mode too. This unit was recently commercialized and the shipping is targeted to start in September. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
@@steveretiredandcycling well soviets got sth similar ages ago powered by petrol engine. same idea but prob diffrent rubber. anyway that rubber on rubber didnt go well in rain and grind wheels pretty quick so prob thats why we dont see it anymore. pretty sure its gonna be same issue here but d like to see rain test 😉
Many contraptions like this one have been sold with the same idea: turn a normal bike into an e-bike in 5 minutes. But none of them work. The motor keeps slipping on the tire, the battery offers a limited range (less than 10 miles), the power is disappointing, plus it ruins your rear tire because of the slippage. It's a waste of money. If you want an e-bike, get a proper one. A cheap chinese rear hub 300 watts e-bike will probably cost the same and will provide a far better experience. But don't trust a random guy like me: buy it, test it, and I'm pretty sure it will end up on a shelf in your garage in less than two weeks, never to be used again. Don't hesitate to prove me wrong if it isn't the case : )
Hi Toto and thank you for your comment. Time will tell as user experiences add up. My feeling is that this unit will give the user a "boost" on the flats and minor hills. I agree that a proper e-bike is the answer for hilly terrain and better mileage. Thank and have a great day, Steve

And if any other valuables such as a bike computer, top tube bag, water bottles, wheels or tire pump, a thief will get those too. Not to mention the whole bike. That's why it's important not to leave a bike unattended in a questionable area.
If the thief cant get it off the bike, they will just take the whole bike instead. It would have to have quick dismount availability to make me interested in a purchase.

Impressive video and a very clever accessory. Philosophically though I couldn’t be more against it. The device gives us things but takes away a lot too. I enjoy using the standard turn signals with my arms. The device takes that away. I enjoy pedaling up a hill under my own power. The device takes that away. The last thing I would want to do when riding my bike is think about electronics and motors. The device takes away our escape from all that and more annoying things. The low tech natural and simple design of a bike are what I love about it; it’s a wonderful respite from all busy things we often want to escape from. The bicycle is one of the last pure and natural machines that gives us solitude and enjoyment and a vacation every time we go for a ride, The device takes that away. Could go on and on but you get my point. Thanks but no thanks.
Hi and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I totally agree with your sentiment. There are a lot of older cyclists that no longer can pedal as they once could. It reminds me of a viewer from the South of France that did century's until his 80th birthday. And on his 90th he bought a friction drive unit to give him a boost. He loves it. There are a lot of very old cyclists that benefit from electric powered bikes. They are dangerous in the wrong hands and must be regulated soon! Thanks again and have a great day, Steve

E-bikes are a nuisance and often dangerous. They should be required to be registered, insured and operators should be a minimum age of 16 and licensed. They should be banned from bike paths and multi use trails. They are "motor vehicles" and should be treated the same as motorcycles. Sad to see Steve pushing these things. I'm 72, been riding since my 20's and still ride 4-5 days a week 20-40 miles with the occasional century or hill climb.
Hi Jeff and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree there should be more control of who rides an e-bike and where. There are many of our older or handicapped viewers that need e-bikes just to get out and ride. The reason I looked for a quality friction drive kit to review was a comment from a Gentleman living in the South of France. In his 70's he could still ride a century. However in his late 80's he was having trouble just riding 40 miles. He bought a "friction drive' unit on his 90th birthday and it gave him new freedom. All kinds of cyclists out there.
@@steveretiredandcycling Sorry Steve I still think they should be classified for what they are. A motor vehicle, and should not be on bike paths or multi use trails. And lets face it older cyclists like us are more likely to be cautious because we know we break easier! However its the 16 year old kid on the bike path flying by while looking at his phone that is an issue. However, if you allow older more mature sensible people with motor vehicles on bike paths and trails you can't really restrict the others. I believe I told you the story of the bike path I ride often of a kid on a ebike rocketing by me, not paying attention and plowed into a young lady walking her dog, injuring her and killing the dog. No insurance to help pay for the women's injuries or the mental anguish of watching her beloved pet die a painful death. Let them ride on the streets as motorcycles with licenses, registration, insurance and where police can monitor them and their actions. But you wont change my mind after seeing that incident with the women in pain and watching her dog die because of a moron. Nope, treat them like a motorcycle with laws and liability banned from bike paths and trails.
I agree. That experience should be related to local Congressmen and other organizations that can affect change in our laws. The accident never should have happened! Things need to change. @@steveretiredandcycling The incident has been reported and the State has a survey out now as well as local cities are looking at it. And similar incidents are more common than you may think. Hi Steve, Thanks for posting. Would this work on an XC carbon mtb? Would like something for my hip and back that would help me on trails uphill. Also, Where do you order? I saw a funding website of some type. Assuming this product is ready to go. Thank you for your time!
Hi there and thanks for your question. It will not work on a mountain bike if you have rear suspension. You can purchase on the Indiegogo website
@@steveretiredandcycling Hi Steve, Thank you for the response. I am confused about the website. Want to make sure I am not funding something as I really want to purchase it. They say perks are not guaranteed so I am confused if it is ready to be shipped or not. The people that manufacture this say they are sold out on their website. Just want to be careful that I am not donating money and getting no product.
@@steveretiredandcycling That website is not selling it but are raising money for it. Quite frankly it is a bit sleazy if you ask me. When you click on the company that makes it you are directed to Indiegogo. Then Indiegogo writes me and says any questions I have will need to be referred to the company/creator. This is really unprofessional if you ask me. It is either available or not available. One guy on your site said he has been waiting for 9 months for his. Not right at all. I think he probably paid to fund it when he thought he was buying it. You are a nice person I can see that. Would be very careful just in case it comes back to you in regards to referring people to Indiegogo to buy it. I have the emails if you would like me to forward to you.
I don't know the answer. If they are sold out I would wait until they are back in stock. That's the only website I'm aware of to purchase.
I don't know whats going on. The company contacted me months ago to test their unit. As you know, I tested it and found it to be a good product. Can't speak for the company since then. Hopefully they are just backlogged and they will honor all orders.
Sounds like a good fit for riders who want to extend their riding range and get out of the rut of riding the same routes over and routes.
Agreed! Thanks for watching and your comment. Take care, Steve
seems a little noisy, no? I like the idea of using one for when I ride the rollers in the winter for a resistance workout.
Hi Ian, it was noisy in the video on my work stand. That's because it was simulating about 25km/hr. Outdoors it's very quiet although if on rollers indoors it may not be very quiet. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
Steve. How does this work for touring? It looks like it interferes with a rear rack and therefore with paniers.
You are correct. It's not meant for touring with panniers.
Good idea but my concern would be the hill climb ability of the device. I like the concept but id like to see it going up a hill.
It gives minimal power going up a hill over 3%. Otherwise it's got plenty of power.
exactly should have had footage of bike computer up different hills to see if it actually works
Sound great. I love my Eride City. the the weight is really getting to me.
Yes, e-bikes can weigh a lot. Thanks for your comment
Steve, ordered two of these so nice to see it in action. Only question I have is? Is it not possible to change the modes with the button on the bike? Seems annoying having to get your phone out to change the mode?
Hi there and thanks for the question! I only tried switching modes on my phone. However, their website says you may switch modes with the remote. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve
Thanks for the feedback! I hope you’re able to find a solution that works for you. I will pass your comment to the manufacturer.
Thanks for a superb video, it's just a pity you don't do music equipment reviews...really informative without unnecessary waffle...5 ⭐
Hi Laurence, I appreciate your comment! Take care, Steve
Steve. You didn’t show video of your bike with the booster while you were riding.
Yes, there are many advertising videos from LIVALL showing people riding with the unit attached to their bikes.
Thanks Steve. Do you know if they make one for the front tire also. I'd like to have the option if possible. Thanks.
Hi Billy. No the unit will not work mounted on a front tire.
You better buy a motorbike in your case
For me, it looks too hard to find a place to buy this. Is it on Amazon? Got to make things easy guys
Search PikaBoost 2 on google and you’ll see the site to purchase
looks like it's Kickstarter and Indiegogo now. So not widely available.
how does it do on bumpy roads? is it durable?
It does fine on bumpy roads since the unit is calibrated to be against the tire at the proper pressure. It looks and feels durable. However I wouldn’t take it on extreme wet gravel. Thanks, Steve
How much is a new battery and how long does it last?
You would have to check with the manufacturer
Do you have to have your phone with you every time you want to use it? Thanks.
Will it work with back suspension?
No it doesn't
Will workout mode charge battery? Regen?
That’s what LIVALL claims in their documentation
My bikes tire width is 3 inches, will the Pika Boost still work on a tire wider than 2.5 inches?
That would be a question for the manufacturer. LIVALL is good at answering questions
I wonder if it works on fat bike tires
Steve, interesting option. I didn’t hear the weight. Did I miss it? Glad you’re having fun out there! Cam
Hi Cam, it only weighs about 6 lbs. Hope all is well with you! Take care, Steve
What kind of saddle are you using?
Thanks and have a great day, Steve
where can you buy one of these ???
Hi Alan, I suggest you check with the LIVALL website or the Indiegogo website. Just google Pikaboost 2 and you will find the correct portal
Think ‘angle grinder’
Then understand why this device can NEVER be quiet!
Great for leisure rides...Anti theft is missing tho..hope they figure it out asap.
Even though it's pretty secure, probably easier to steal the entire bike. Or take it with the seat post. Thanks again, Steve
better to bring the wrench and take it inside with you. RubbeeX has a quick release
Okok, so the motor stops thanks to the AAR 2.0 but thanks to the remote the action will be more immediate? Okok, thanks for answering
Thank you for this great review, ive just purchased one unfortunately without thinking that this would interefere with my rear bike rack which is in frequent use, so not sure how im going to get around that one, do you know if they accept returns for a full refund? 😊
Hi Tracy, not sure what their policy is. Their website says something about 14 day return if unopened. I would check the website for further details. Thanks and have a good day, Steve

Hi there and thanks for your comment, Steve
The big question. Same with all e bikes and e-scoters. Will this kill my family or is it fire safe?
That’s not a question I can answer
Are multiple phones able to use the app for more than one rider for the same bike?
I believe they can. However, this would be a question for the manufacturer.
Hi, will it fit Fat bike tires?
It is designed for tires up to 2 1/2”.

Where to buy in Croatia this... I wamt to buy ....?
Hi William, the best way to find out if the PikaBoost 2 ships to Croatia is to check with the LIVALL website. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
What happens if you ride into a no service area or the app stops or something I hope it doesn't stop the bike suddenly 😮
When riding the bluetooth connection is between the unit and your phone. It doesn't need an internet connection to operate. Thanks, Steve
@@steveretiredandcycling oh good 😊
Where did you get it if sales and deliveries haven't started yet?
Hi Ruslan and thanks for the question. LIVALL reached out to me to test, evaluate and make a video of the unit. They wanted to get "real world" experience with the PikaBoost 2 before it was offered for sale. Thanks again, Steve
Does it apply to front wheel?
@@user-pv1fm3ry5w no it can’t be mounted on the front wheel
How does it handle snow, ice, salt, gravel, mud etc?
It’s not meant for extreme conditions. Rain is okay
I have an e-bike that weights 38 lbs. Carbon fibre and $1000 delivered to my door. 13 amp hrs and good for close to a realistic 80 km in pedal mode.
Sounds like an excellent bike. What brand and model? Thanks for your comment
It’s a Tesgo runner.
I found the Tesgo runner on their website. Looks like a nice bike. It says the weight is 55 lbs. Still a nice bike for the money. Thanks, Steve
@@steveretiredandcycling guess it depends on where you look, currently shown on Amazon on as 39.7 lbs, maybe its 39 lbs without the battery
I love this idea the only thing I don’t like I have to get rid of my rack
Does it wear out the tire?
Ricky.
Steve Retired and Cycling is great.
What?
배터리는 중국산인가요?
Hi Mimi, Yes the battery is made in China. However, it is made to the highest quality standard having the internationally recognized CE mark. To qualify fro the CE make, the battery must comply with strict quality standards. Thank you and have a good, Steve
@@steveretiredandcycling Thank you, may I know the manufacturer of the battery?
I'm not shure who manufactures the battery. You could check with LIVALL. The unit I tested was a pre production model. Thanks, Steve
I was interested in this unit until you had to use the phone to control it.
Yes, that is "one more thing" to deal with. However, once you set the riding mode, the phone can be put away.
I want one!
Won't fit bikes with rear suspension
That is true since the unit must be in a fixed position.
Thanks and have a great day, Steve
what about riding in rain? no way its gonna work on mud..
It will work in the rain. I don't think a muddy road would be good for the unit. I would not take it on a muddy dirt road

But usually seat bar has some standard allen key or quick release, so if attached to seat post then a thief gets a two for one ;)
And if any other valuables such as a bike computer, top tube bag, water bottles, wheels or tire pump, a thief will get those too. Not to mention the whole bike. That's why it's important not to leave a bike unattended in a questionable area.
Yep ,,,, and use a bike cable lock for the seat / frame Or they will swipe the bike completely >>> anyways ?

@@steveretiredandcycling Thanks for the Info. Im all for innovation and new ideas, so I hope it does end up being a success and work well.

Personally, I'm going to speak with the management of the East Coast Greenway. I know these people and they are politically active. Thanks Jeff!
@@steveretiredandcycling The incident has been reported and the State has a survey out now as well as local cities are looking at it. And similar incidents are more common than you may think.
I have pointed out that indeed the lack of attentiveness by the State and other authorities to the issues e-bikes present (also gas powered scooters and skate boards as well as Segways on multi use and bike paths) could be considered in a civil matter as negligence on behalf of the State / County and City could potentially be held liable. Thanks Steve.
